History of the power rangers

Huh, it's kind of sad. Bulk and his pal Skull were fun to watch, but it seems like they can't do anything else but Power Rangers.

It's like that franchise kills careers.

what are you talking about? While neither have done much in front of the camera both have been fairly successful in the behind the scenes stuff or work away from the biz.

and besides while i love power rangers through and through even i will admit that most of the actors for it are not very good.

amy jo johnson is on that show swat last i heard

Well the first ep of Samurai went up today...

How was it?

My room has no tv because it was 'borrowed' and I'm to lazy to carry it up two flights of stairs, bring the satellite box back up, reconnect everything, then wait ten minutes while it resets.

In my opinion it sucked.

1. we are just dumped into the story. besides the intro at the beginning we have no idea where the bad guys are from or why they are trying to complete their goal.

the same goes for the rangers when we first meet them they are already a team with no effort made to have any sort of introduction.... just thinking about how craptacular. this ep was is pissing me off. when the ep goes up on youtube (likely in the next day or 2) i will post it here and you can see for your self.

I have been watching power rangers since 93 and i have never been ashamed of the show. This ep brought me close

Downloaded the episode from MU and gave it a watch. Thoughts:

I sorta like the opening, it's a remix of the original, not the best remix (it's got nothing on Masaaki Endoh), but not bad.

I didn't like how we're thrown in the middle of the action either. I don't mind there being some rangers active by the start of it, but it's kind of nice to be introduced to things along with the protagonist(s). The episode also felt more like a character piece for the green ranger. Which hey, is great and all, but those usually pop up after 3-5 episodes, right? So we can get familiar with -all- the characters a bit before you give them focused development? As it is, the characters are mostly dull outside of the green ranger...who isn't very impressive himself.

The puns from the monster made me groan, and I usually -like- puns.

I didn't mind the Skull replacement. It felt nostalgic, so I'd say so far they've done a decent job of capturing the Bulk/Skull dynamic, even if Bulk did most of the work for that.

Also, replace the word 'samurai' every time it's said with 'ninja' and the feel of the episode would be more appropriate.

While not the worst start to the show, as I do think there's been worse episodes, I only recently watched RPM for the first time, and that show was great, for all that it heavily ripped off storytelling elements from In Space. This just felt mediocre by far.

So just to see how it compared to it's source material, I went and grabbed a few episodes of Shinkenger from TV-Nihon. First thing of note: It actually is episode 3 of Shinkenger. Not episode 1. Not sure why they aired it out of order, but that's a big part of why it felt like a weak start.

Second thing of note: It actually is episode 3 of Shinkenger.

As in, same identical plot. Except much worse handled.

They cut out a lot of the story's scenes from Shinkenger, making the plot that much weaker (as an example, that 'training montage' that barely makes sense in PR:S does seem to emphasize in Shinkenger that his plan was to focus on outrunning the arms, not sensing the attacks) and all I can see them adding in to make up for all the cuts was...the Bulk and Spike scene.

Which in hindsight also doesn't make -any- sense. It just comes out of nowhere and serves no purpose. Why is Bulk starting a clubhouse for his nephew? What's the connection to the main characters/power rangers?

I'm not exactly sure what the point is of translating something directly without adding anything of note, only subtracting, but that's what Power Rangers Samurai episode 1 is in a nutshell. A much weaker reinterpretation. Will later episodes be better? Hope so...

Well Kay, Fromst what somebody else mentioned....They took the Teen Titans approach and started us right in the middle of the action (or early parts to be more specific) and will more then likely go back to how it all started in a flashback episode explaining how they got to where they are.

I watched the first episode off that MU link earlier, and it left me pretty unimpressed. Shinkenger executed it much better. Then I saw this, which made me cry.

They did the puns purposely to invoke the spirit of MMPR.

It feels like they're trying a bit too hard to be invoking that though...

Again, Nostalgia factor. Besides, Saban's back in control of Power Rangers since a few years ago when Disney got the rights..They're probably getting their skills back.

You also still tend to have bouts of new series weirdness at the start of each new season as they try a few things out and stick with what works.

Does anyone else want to do something power rangers related? I'm feeling nostalgic after seeing these.

The fact that Netflix has Power Rangers on demand also helps.
