How might Squaresoft/Squenix not suck.

Do you know any details? Something about 'Etna mode' on gamefaqs, but I kinda wanna know what all they've added. If they've thrown in some of the system elements from 2, it would be awesome. more classes would be neat too, even if I never did unlock even Majin... heck, maybe easier class unlocks, since Majin in 1 was ridiculous... five different classes had to be level 200, one of them the crappiest class in the game, stat-wise. I stopped playing 1 mostly because it took too long to level enough to get to the next hardest area unless you wanted to troop through dozens of items to find... whatever the exp-raising specialist was called. In 2, you know exactly how deep you have to go to get felonies, how many you'll get, and you even get a reward for it in large amounts of cash or items, some of them extremely rare ones.

Apparently, Etna has her own storyline, from what I understand. Besides that? Not much, I'm afraid.

But seriously, Disgaea alone makes the PSP a must buy. And the other games rolling in this years just make me drool more.

For all that they messed up with PS3, Sony are really making up for it to the players with PSP...

You know, as much as I find it distasteful, when there ARE this many good ones, I don't mind my PSP being nothing but a portable remake console. ^^ Although, I'm STILL waiting for Suikoden I&II to come to the US... and yes, I realize that at this point it's very... unlikely...

Suikoden I took 3 years to get a PAL version, so I wouldn't count it as unlikely just yet. Konami has a tendency to be sloooooow with those things - hell, they didn't make PAL ports of S3 at all, and took 2 more years to make the pal version of SII.

Hm, true, although PAL versions are usually the ones to get fucked in terms of time. Still, you're keeping my tiny flame of hope lit. ^^
Actually, PAL versions have been very timely in the last 5 years. It's the quality of translations that we get fucked over. Suikoden II's PAL translation was one of the most awful ever. Zero Wing bad.

Apart from the odd screw-up, like Circuret instead of Circlet, I don't recall it being all that bad, GH. Definitely not Zero Hour levels of crap. It's been a while - refresh my memory? :hmm:

Besides the Circuret things, there were loads of punctuation mistakes in dialogues, the yes/no prompts were switched around (shades of BoF), some words had missing letters, and in general it felt like it was run through Babelfish in some places.

Mind you, this is especially true of the Italian version - which was based on the UK one, which was just not good all around.

Ah. OK. I do recall some horrific punctuation going on, now that you mention it. :sick3:

All in all, just one more reason to hope for the PSP versions getting released over here.

Ah. So I'll just look up those others you mentioned to go along with VP... since I already have a copy of Disgaea 1 and all. Used book/other media stores rock!

And Apparently they just dropped the price thirty bucks too... so next time I get near a GameStop/EB Games I'll be checking the new price on used PSPs.

I have a copy of the PS1 version of VP and still got a copy for the PSP, if only so I could cart it around with me (and the PS1 disks are so damn fragile it's nice to have a more robust version)

I heartily second whomever it was that wanted a remake/touch-up for Vagrant Story. That game kicked much ass. Sadly I never did make it to the very end, but I loved playing it. Have to go dust it off and fire up the ps1 sometime.

A remake of FF7 or better yet 6 (hopefully without the plots getting screwed by so called improvements) would also be very welcome. Though the income from such a project(s) might encourage SquarEnix to never give up their FF franchise and branch out into other games.

I dunno... FFVI's 16-bit(or was it 32?) glory really seems to make it the game it is in some ways... a remake might not seem that great to me...

I will admit, that while I appreciate many of the RPGs that Toriyama has helped to design, Crono Trigger, Dragon Quest (VII is wonderful), on the subject of remakes, I was really ticked when the anime cutscenes turned Crono Trigger into Crono Ball Z.

So yes, the remake of certain old games may just not work out so well.

I wonder, though, if Advent Children was successful enough to possibly spawn just novelizations (so to speak) of various video game storylines into anime and such. The few attempts there have been turn out terribly, at least in the U.S. and I don't know if our anime counterparts have managed much better.

(and while I may be burned with fire for this, I do not happen to like FF7 all that much.)

Still, I'd be interested just how much Squeenix or any video game manufacturer would be willing to branch out into more than just video games. Maybe some not so terrible video game movies? Please? No more Van Damme Street fighter movies or Dennis Hopper Koopas?

I've only ever liked two video game movies in all that they've put out... the Mario Brothers movie (corny, I know, but it was still pretty good for what technology they had at the time), and Silent Hill(though I still have yet to play the games, so I can't quite compare it).

Though the Dead or Alive movie coming out might be worth watching. For the plot, yeah :unsure!:

I just picked up Dawn of Mana, and I have this to say:

Why Square, WHY?

This game fails hard. I won't elaborate here, as most of the online reviews are spot on.

So let's see, between this, Legend of Mana, and Children of Mana, I can safely say that the Mana Franchise has gone down to toilet. Should I even bother with Heroes of Mana?

Hm. I've never played a Mana game before; I ended up ordering Children of Mana out of interest, though. I guess I'll see. It should be OK for a diversion anyway.

If you have a working SNES system you need to get a copy of Secret of Mana, or find an emulator. Games not the greatest (now or for the era) in terms of graphics but you're seriously missing out if you judge the series by the latest games. *is extremely happy to have a working SNES system and functional cartridge for SoM and other games that've been fucked over by 'remakes'*

If an RPG is good, graphics are no bother. :) I'll have a hunt for Secret, then, thanks. :)

You know, reading GH's remarks on the quality of PAL(what does that even stand for?) translations, I'm glad I live in the States.

I'd also recommend the next game in the series, Seiken Densetsu 3, also for the Snes. It was only released in Japan, but there's a fan translation patch that you should be able to find without too much trouble.
