Harry Potter I Am Hero

#1
"I was a Hero because other people said I had to be one. Now, I want to be a Hero because I say I am."

This idea could start from the canon, or it could start from a slight change in it. The end result is the same: Harry Potter becomes a masked vigilante post-Voldemort. Finding himself free to define who he is as a person, Harry would set out across the world to find himself, and in doing so would come to the realization that even if he was destined to become a Hero, that doesn't mean he can't be one on his own terms. And the remnants of the Death Eaters and plain old Muggle crime continues on (though the impetus for this one might be stronger if the Dursleys had told Harry that his parents had been murdered by a serial killer rather than they ended up dead in a car crash-Knowing his parents' murderer got away might provide more influence on his development into his Hogwarts years and then afterwards to becoming a masked vigilante).

Harry would use a mixture of Muggle technology and know-how and Magic to combat evil, from magical criminals to the more mundane kind, from Dark Lords to petty thieves. Knowing the ways in which his celebrity can be used against him, he would also use his masked persona to be a hero in his eyes and the eyes of others without the baggage that comes with being Harry Potter.

Now, I've seen a LOT of Harry-as-a-Superhero stories, a few good but most of them really bad. What I want is to inspire stories about Harry Potter becoming a superhero in his own right rather than in the mold of another. Take his psychology, tweak it just a little to push him towards applying his "saving people thing" to everyone. What kind of persona he'd have, his modus operandi, his heroic alter ego, that's all up for discussion in this thread.

So go!

While inspired by Batman, Harry could go the route of any number of superheroes. This thread is for discussion of various ways to go about it.

Here's a little fun snippet for inspiration:

It wasn't a lack of inspiration that drove Harry to reading comic books in light of his challenge, but rather... A little research. Yes, that was it, research. That and, hey, if he was going to go ahead with this vigilante business, knowing how it was seen in fiction wasn't a bad idea.

So he sat in his study in Grimmauld Place, stacks of comic books around his easy chair, the current subject of his study opened up before him.

Harry made a face at the conclusion of his latest research subject, and tossed it away. "Ugh... Why is every bloody superhero in that universe a complete prick?" He shook his head. He supposed it was well written, but The Authority was just... Not for him. He'd done more than enough killing, thank you.

Well, of people who could die, anyway... Harry shook his head and pulled out another book. This one was from America, written in the 1960s. He vaguely recalled that a Batman TV show had been made about the same time. He'd read through Batman as he was now (finding the animated version particularly palatable while the comic version... Had it's ups and downs) but he'd never read one from this far back. So he opened it up, laughing a bit at the odd cover.

The moment he finished reading it, he shook his head and tossed it away.

"Bloody hell, that was... Weird," Harry thought aloud. He shook his head. "I don't think I'll be going about in 'Baby form' any time soon," he added with a huff. He then picked up something from a company called Image. The artwork was... Weird and disturbing but Harry was willing to give it a shot.

As soon as he was done with that, however...

"Ugh," he muttered, tossing it away. "That's just... No. No. No."

And what the bloody hell was up with all the shoulder pads?! Were they all American football players or something?

And the senseless violence... Why? He didn't bloody understand it! And it hit a little too close to home in some places. With a sigh, he looked back over his "research material".

"Least I'm finding out how NOT to do this thing," he muttered.

Um, I know about one. Harry has Green Lantern powers and is raised by Batman and Wonder Woman, it's called <a href='http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4944577/1/Harry_Potter_and_the_power_of_Oa' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>Harry Potter and the Power of Oa</a>. He has lantern powers, but he acts more like a young Batman.

I've also seen a couple where Harry is being raised by a super villain, more specifically Poison Ivy, but those haven't yet really put Harry into the place of a hero or a villain, just a kid trying to help 'Mom'.

Although, it was funny to read Harry one-punch knock out Superman in one of them with an accidental stunner from the fist.

The Wizard of Gotham. Written by Skysaber.

... Yeah it's not horrible, it's just not well put together.

Also <a href='http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5016407/1/A_Late_Autumn_Dream' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>A Late Autumn Dream</a> by Rose Midnight Moonlight Black. It has a few simularities to Wizard of Gotham, but quite a few differences as well.

Sure, dude has some good ideas but all his stories are so poorly written, and if they're beta'd at all then his beta clearly needs to buy a fucking clue. Why would you link that as a good story?

I mean, look at the opening paragraph
A satisfied Albus Dumbledore walked towards his office after the satisfying Christmas dinner he shared with his staff, and a few students that had chosen to stay in school during the break. It was a good dinner, and he made a mental note to thank the house elves for their wonderful cooking. As he went inside his office, he spent a few minutes petting Fawkes, his phoenix familiar who looked like it was about to reach his burning day. Feathers dropped every now and then from its perch, and the bird's posture had weakened as the days progressed. He hoped Fawkes would burst to flame soon.
Sure, it's not the worst written fanfic I've ever seen, but I certainly couldn't get any further into any of his fics than that without heavy intoxication...

Of course the real challenge here is this: Who the hell is Harry Potter going to fight?
Start him off with the cliched Death Eater fragments, and the standard alleyway muggers/street gangs all heroes go through. Perhaps some muggle mafia, if he's going to be interacting with the mundane world.

As for his first supervillains, perhaps with both Dumbledore's and Voldemort's deaths a magical League of Shadows type organization decides it's time to expand to England?
Or how about Harry's superhero persona inspires a former Death Eaters victim to put on their own mask and cape. Except they won't be as nice as Harry is, using lethal force. Could even have the two team up at first, before the eventual clash over idealogies.

Maybe one of Bellatrix's crucio victims developed a psycho killer personality?

That's pretty much all I got, unless you wanna throw in a new budding dark lord, or Grindewald escaping, or a mad scientist, or something.

Edit: Did Fenrir Greyback die in the seventh book, I can't remember? Either way, you could have either him or his son/lover/packmate as enemies for Harry. Perhaps their enhanced senses allow them to identify Harry by smell, to make it more dangerous for our hero? :huh.:

EVERYONE. He becomes what he stood for- man becoming Minster and all that shit- and at the end of his spiral into villainy he goes out with a bang against a gazillion aurors.

You could go the way of Buffy. There is not shortage of Big Bads, Average Bads and just plain Patethic Bads. After all, it is ludicrous than V and his merry band are the only magical criminals... specially if the take the one centuri out of fashion "victorianish" magical setting. American Robber Barons, Fu Manchu ripoffs, Ottoman satraps, carribean evial (and hot) Vodoo Queens... the list is endless

I know of at least 2 super-hero harry potter fics.

One, after GOF and the raising of Voldemort, never really went beyond getting into the superhero training, the other was Post-Voldemort, was multi-authored, crackish and fragmentary.

The first was

<a href='http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3243598/1/Wizards_Superheroes_and_Jackalopes' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3243598/1/Wiza..._and_Jackalopes</a>,

the second was on

<a href='http://groups.yahoo.com/group/3_or_4_Part_Harmony/messages' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://groups.yahoo.com/group/3_or_4_Part_Harmony/messages</a>

and

<a href='http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/seelvorfanfiction/messages?o=1&yguid=277986979' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/seelvorfa...yguid=277986979</a>

a few hundred (thousand or million?) posts back but

<a href='http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thegreathall_hp/' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thegreathall_hp/</a>

has some, if not all of it, collected together in their seelvor's group folder in files, called Lightning Man.

So what type of hero is Harry gonna be?
The dark, mysterious and intimidating type sending a message to criminals that they better not mess around if they know what's good for them?
The noble, inspirational type who tries to lead by example while helping to clean up society?
Or just a guy in a mask trying to help out?

What's he aiming for: detterant, icon, or good samaritan?

Personally, I think one could make good cases for all 3.
Detterant- Harry has seen how the Wizarding World treats its icons and doesn't wanna go down that route. On the other hand, he also remembers how the mere mention of Voldemort's name was enough to get some wizards shaking in fear. Why not inspire the same kind of terror in the bad guys for
a change?
Icon- This time Harry has a choice. He's gonna be a symbol, someone people can look up to. But he's not going to do it because of something his mother did when he was one years old. No, he's gonna become make an image from purely his own merits. Become the focus of Light not from his past, but from his own actions.
Samaritan- Something Harry already is. Only now he'll be dropping burden of being Harry Potter the Boy Who Lived, and simply do what's right.
