There's also the fact that jettisoning the EU would mean shutting down TOR, and I can fully see Bioware resorting to armed insurgency after the amount of money they've put into it so far without even breaking even yet.
the EU really only applies to the novels and comics that came AFTER episode 6.

Disney would have to be fools not to see that the Old Republic storyline has garnered many fans so I don't think that will ever come to be a problem.

Disney haven't shown themselves to be fools lately either.

Especially since The Old Republic era has almost zero connection to the film series and wouldn't affect any future movies.

Can't a man dream about Disney getting it's shit wrecked and/or burned to the ground in peace, for fuck's sake?

That said, I could accept them declaring some things non-canon. The Crystal Star was dumb, the Yuuzhan Vong series was ... bad, Anakin Solo's fall to the dark side can easily be written off. And let's not even touch the Young Jedi series or the silliness that some of the very early EU unleashed (though that is generally ignored, it's still, technically part of canon ... yes, that does include Trioculus and the Glove of Darth Vader, among others).
I haven't read everything but I think the only books I'd really miss are the Thrawn books, Han Solo trilogy and the X-wing series.

Wow. I mean, wow.

Does anyone EVER notice the double-standard on racism? Ever? Oh yeah, and Carrie Fisher is white, Mulan.

Flowers bloom. Birds fly. Snakes slither. Texans own guns. Non-whites feel entitled to be racist to whites because politically correct society says they should be racist to whites.

Also, is Leia not white herself? Or is it that since she comes from a place where races are so diverse that race by color would just create more confusion than distinction?

I could also just be thinking into this too much. :snigger:

Edit: Also, are there any other princesses in the SW universe that would be Disney Princesses now?

If anyone tries to pull the "racial justice" line, understand that you will have quite literally just sided with Hitler. And I mean that; that isn't just Godwin talking. Claiming that what was done to people of one social group by people of another social group (not all of either, mind you, just some) thereby justifies people of the second group (who were NEVER thus mistreated) to prosecute their "grievances" against people of the first group (who NEVER participated in such activities) is taking exactly the same collectivist line on race that Hitler promoted as part of the Nazi program.

[pokerface] Precisely, which is why we should exterminate the Mongols for driving the Aryans out of Iran. [/pokerface]

Okay, good news: J. J. Abrams and the guy who wrote Empire are on the films.

Bad news: Lucas did the story treatments. Of course, they could just break the promise given how Lucas no longer actually owns the rights.

Here's my prediction, from the perspective of a cynical but well informed Hollywood man: They'll go for the Thrawn Trilogy, or at least borrow heavily from it for the next three movies.

One, Thrawn probably has the most name recognition among Star Wars fans for EU villains. He's also among the most visually interesting villains with his blue skin and red eyes. The marketing practically writes itself: He's essentially an evil Sherlock Holmes who is Awesome by Analysis, and can garner fan girls if you go for a reasonably attractive actor.

Two, the Thrawn Trilogy is probably one of the best EU storylines to be adapted into movies due to the fact Timothy Zahn wrote them like a movie trilogy. Adaptations are all the rage nowadays-Hell, the Thrawn Trilogy was even a successful comic book. These play heavily in Thrawn's favor.

Three, Mara Jade. The potential to turn her into a new Hollywood Sex Symbol has a great deal of appeal and giving Luke Skywalker a love interest has further potential. More female characters are always appealing to producers anyway, and the Zahn trilogy has not only Mara Jade but Winter as well. And it wouldn't be too hard to fit in additional female characters into the story.

From the perspective of a writer, the Thrawn trilogy is very attractive to adapt and has some major themes that can carry the entire story through three movies: That is, redemption, rebuilding, creating. The Empire has largely been defeated but it might return in the midst of the New Republic's internal troubles. Fey'lya Borsk is an effective antagonist who demonstrates even those on your side can be difficult to trust and that the Peace can be harder than the War.

Han and Leia face the challenge of building a real family together, and making a life despite their serious responsibilities. The potential of two new Jedi in the galaxy can also be terrifying, as can Leia's continuing doubts about her being a Jedi. Han also has to find his way in between Jedi and politics and love and family.

Luke is faced with the challenge of rebuilding the Jedi Order, and how to go about that. Mara Jade has to figure out how to live now that the Empire has fallen and the Emporer is gone, and her interaction with Luke and her redemption could be a heavy part of the story-Continuing Luke's character growth as he tries to redeem another Darksider just as he did his Father. Will he succeed with his father and stick to his principles, or will he fail and compromise like the Jedi of old did?

All of this and more can make for epic storytelling, and can also make for a high grossing and excellently reviewed film series. Maybe even Oscar nominations if Abrams plays his cards right (and the Academy gets their heads out of their asses). That kind of potential, in the light of movies that only a few decades ago would have been dismissed as "nerd fodder", makes me cautiously optimistic for the future Star Wars films.

And hey... At the very least, Jar Jar is unlikely to show up.

Technically Leia is an alien that looks caucasian, not white.

And while that is racist.... its sadly pretty accurate in my college experience. Both in the literal description of the princesses and how they party.

Hey, Darth Lucas is no longer in control. We're in the clear on that end, anyway.

And if you want me to feel it, hit harder.
