The Lessons of Experience

With age comes experience, and from experience, wisdom. The things we do stay with us and inform our actions and words.

Your challenge for the first IRON FIC of the season is to write a story about those lessons taught by experience. Whether it's the soldier on the battlefield remembering his training days, the witch's continuing experiments in potion making, or the world's oldest hero reminding everyone exactly how he got to be so old in a profession with such a high fatality rate, your story must involve someone drawing on their past to go forward (or teach a lesson or tell a story).

Some suggestions, because it has been most of a year since you did these:

* Someone's mother providing romantic advice based on her early loves

* Narratives exploring the mistakes made by others, taken to heart by the narrator (Demon Souls?)

* A reflective piece about a time traveller trying to fix the mistakes he made the first time he traveled in time.

Remember, rules are:

Fanfiction only

Time limit: four hours

Are we allowed to do original fiction or is it just fanfiction?

The First and Greatest of the Judges appears. Lightwave is your most honorable judge here.

Of course I would almost break all the fingers on my left hand with a haphazard serve today.

Does this mean that you broke most of your fingers, or that all your fingers are fine, but they still hurt like a bitch?

It is too bad that I appear to be the only one.

Anyways....:

Contest over. Since Cornuthaum is the only person to Enter. I have to declare him the winner.

I have rendered my judgment.

There could be no winner if the quality isn't acceptable.

I mean nobody has to win.

Holy shit, contest ended at 6:00 AM in my timezone. Dammit. Probably still going to write something, but dammit.

I wouldn't call this a success, but we had at least one more entry than I expected.

I guess the iron fic concept is flawed.

+8. Daylight Savings Time doesn't exist in Taiwan.

Extend the time period to 24 hours. That way we don't have cases where people don't even know the contest has started until it's over.

It was announced weeks in advance.

And I made a point of reminding people about it last week, yesterday and half an hour before it started. :huh.:

Also, when I did take people's advice and made the IF contests 24 hour long, after a one-time jump in participants, fewer people wrote for it. The four hour format works.

zeebee: Not true at all. The Iron Fic contests always start with one or two entries, but that number increases as the season continues.

So, I'd like to thank my judges who have judged and the people who didn't jump down my throat (fingers??) when I wouldn't be available during the contest time. See you all next week.

I'm pretty sure the last time you tried to restart it there were no entries. Saying it's new means little when people have a weeks notice. Some might have had issues with the time zone, but the rest didn't try.

The golden days of Iron Fic are long past.

Doesn't mean there won't be a Bronze Age.
