Your prompt this week is a scenario: a gathering, formal or informal as you like, is being held and someone is late. When that character arrives hours or even days late, (or the next time he is seen if it's years later), he tells the story of why he was late. His story should start, "A funny thing happened on the way there..."
Of course, the funny thing about funny things is that they're usually only funny in retrospect, if at all. Maybe the call to adventure struck unexpectedly, or the character stopped to be a witness/spectator/commentator to something interesting happening.
Or the character overslept/got drunk/skipped out and is making up the story on the spot. Whether the true story is disbelieved or a false one is believed is up to the author.
The challenge is made!
EDIT: Five minutes early. SO GENEROUS.
