I've got a question

I know this is probably not the place to put a topic like this, but I figured people would at least see it here, and I'd be able to check it with ease.

For the summer, I'm lookin for a good video/computer game to get, but I've been drawing blanks on what to get.

I'm lookin for an RPG, either a computer MMO (though hopefully a relatively inexpensive one...I'm not willing to pay per month), or a nice console one (I got a PS2). I might just decide to get a DS and get Pokemon Diamond, but I'm not sure.

So, does anyone have any good recomendations. Cuz otherwise, I'll probably just end up bustin out FFIX again, and doing a challenge or something for it.

Wrong forum? Shouldn't this be in the game forum?

Anyhow, on computer MMO's, there really aren't many good free/1-time fee games. Honestly, the only games I can think of that do well are Ragnarok Online (private servers obviously) and Maple Story. Another good free computer game is Doukutsu Monogatari (aka, Cave Story) though it's more of an action/adventure game than RPG.

Moving on....What games do you have for the PS2? There's a -lot- of good RPG games there, enough that I don't really wanna recommend stuff if you have a good portion of it or don't like a certain genre of RPG. Specifying what type you like helps since there's a lot of variety in terms of RPGs (tactical, turn-based vs real time, fantasy swords/magic, multiple endings ie good replay value, etc).

Also, a DS is nice to get, and it has some fun games, Pokemon Diamond included. If you end up getting a DS though, get Pearl and trade game-exclusive pokemon with me. =p

I'm actually sick to death of Maple...I've been playing it since last october, and its pretty much no fun anymore. I just go on and chill now, and even then, I'm bored.

Yeah, I realize this is probably on the wrong board, but this board gets a lot more activity than the game board, so I figured here would be a better place to put it.

If anyone really cares that much, I'll repost there, but there doesnt seem to be much of a point.

As for what type of games I like, I like essentially anything. In an RPG, I like essentially anything. If its an MMO, I like there to be a lot of ways to develop your character, and a relatively painless leveling setup (one where its not that hard to level up....more like Diablo 2 and less like Maple Story, if ya understand what I'm trying to say). I was thinkin about City of Heros, cuz that sounds fun, but when I tried to google it, so little results came up that led me to think that it was very unpopular (plus, its like 15$ a month...thats insane).

If its a console RPG, than a good story and characters is what I'm looking for (essentially, NOT FFXII, but more like FFIX).

Go get Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and it's sequel.

They must be played.

No worries about the forum, I suppose it's true enough that I myself probably wouldn't have given it a real look if it was in the correct forum, heh. :snigger:

And I never got into Maple, but I know lots who have, so I figured I'd toss a mention. Ragnarok Online was my crack back in the day, though I've tried to stay away lest I get sucked back in the madness, as I know of a couple of nice private servers.

City of Heroes I tried, and I'd not recommend it. I tried a free two weeks at one point, and I had more fun with the character generator (which I've seen free here and there), than with the actual game.

Hrm...tried the Atelier Iris games, Ike? There's two for the PS2. There's also Suikoden (recommend III, but try any of 'em) and Shadow Hearts. Then there's classics like Chrono Trigger which is available for the system if you haven't played it. CT comes with FFIV if I recall correctly, so you'd get a two for one deal there.

Honestly though, most of my favorite RPGs are classics for the older generation systems, and that's really what I'd recommend for 'good story' and 'characters', as those games didn't have the hardware to do super pretty stuff and had to manage with storytelling much more. Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Tales of Phantasia, Super Mario RPG, most Zelda games...a good darn portion of nintendo RPGs, really. Which has the benefit of a lot of them being available as roms to boot.

City of Villians is more fun than Heroes, but both get old within three months as it becomes repetitive. Honestly, only the Bank Heists are worth it. And the drug runs, but only if you stay longer than necissary.

Secret of Mana is what got me into gaming. If I had never played that game, I would not be the person I am today.

I've tried Suikoden III a long way back, and it just wasnt that fun, for some reason. I can't remember why, but I returned it within a week.

I've never even heard of the Alterier Isis games, so I'll go look em up. But the only other game you mentioned that i hadn't played is Tales of Phantasia....I tried playing Chrono Trigger on the PS, and the load times were so insanely terrible, that i dropped my 3/4 of the way thru game, borrowed a SNES copy from a friend, and started over.

I'm seriously thinkin of just gettin the DS and pokemon, though...at least I know I'll like it :D.

Did you see the Xbox version? If so, that's why.

The PC version is better.

Sacred for PC is sorta old, but a very good Diablo-like. Give it a spin.

If you want a game that'll keep you busy for PS2, either Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga, Devil Summoner or Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land will do. The last one is sorta old, but it's a classic Wizardry game, in essence - read: hard as hell and you'll hate enemy Ninja with a passion.

Besides that? For PC, my suggestion is "Get an emulator and a bunch of SNES ROMs". If you look in the games section, I made a topic specifically for ROMiness. You'll find essentially any ROM you want in the links I provide, and they all are virus free.

If you want PC games specifically... Gothic III, KotOR I and II, Heroes of Might & Magic IV, and Morrowind (NOT Oblivion - I honestly find it boring compared to Morrowind) are all good picks.

Enjoy.

I've actually referenced Nocturne in a bunch of other threads...played it, loved it. Heck, years and years ago, I bought one of the earlier games in the series for the gameboy and loved it, too. Revelations the Demon Slayer kicked ass.

I actually have an emulator, and am partially through FFV at the moment. I have a SNES at home, with numerous old rpgs, but for the ones I cant get, i got the emulation.

Played Heros IV, too...or maybe it was III. One of them had classic Heros graphics and was good, the other had 'newer and updated' graphics, and sucked major ass. Or maybe there was a Heros V or something.

Otherwise, I'll look into the other games ya mentioned, thanks :D.

Tales of Phantasia is a game you have to get a rom for. It's a game that had never made it to the US (at the time anyhow, it's been ported to the GBA, if I recall correctly) but some people somewhere really liked the game and 'translated' it.

I put quote marks around translated, because a lot of the lines may have just been some funny remarks that the guys put in (they certainly don't show in the port, but that could just be censorship admittedly). Anyhow, it was an SNES game originally, and definitely a worthwhile RPG.

Certainly one of the better Tales games.

To give you an idea of the sorts of quotes that didn't make it to the US, here's a classic quote from Klarth about two of the female heroes to the main hero:
"Which one of the girls do you like? Would you want to do? Mint's got that quiet elegance, but I bet Arche fucks like a tiger!"

So yeah, get the rom, not the ported GBA copy. :snigger:

Just to clarify, the 'FUCKS LIKE A TIGER' quote is entirely DeJap's fault, as is Arche's dream (in the original, she called Cless an idiot and muttered about 'stop molesting me' or something to that effect).

On the other hand, the DeJap patch owns the GBA official shit for free. Not only did they lobotomize the names, they misspelled 'Ragnarok' into 'KANGAROO'.

I'm not even joking.

Avoid Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. Gameplay-wise, they are basically the .hack games, only with a completely retarded ally AI - it will burn a hole in your potions in seconds. It's gotten so bad that I just let Goofy and Donald die and go at it alone. Useless sacks of flesh...

Grandia Xtreme sucked compared to 2, and Grandia 3 was not as good, but give the latter a spin.

Okage is a no brainer. Buy it if you see it. Seriously. (on a side note, a Naruto possessed by Stan would be hilarious...

Final Fantasy X, X-2 and XII need stabbing. Lots of it. The best of those three is XII, because it has... Fran's ass. And Balthier. And NOTHING ELSE OF NOTE. Avoid it unless you like those two things a lot.

X-2 just needs to die. It sucked. It was lame. It had a horrid plot.

FFX was... not as bad as FFX-2, but still very bad. Tidus was a whiny bitch, the cast aside from Kimahri (whom I found decent) was tiredly cliched and uninspired, and in general it was fairly meh.

Rogue Galaxy is a strange game. You might like or hate it. The absolute best thing in it, for a Dynasty Warriors fan like me, is that it has a Xiahou Dun lookalike in it (Zegram). :snigger:

To add to the games suggested there:

-Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song
-Radiata Stories
-Ring Of Red (VERY old strategy mecha based game)
-Front Mission 4

I played, but did not beat, kingdom hearts 1. It just irritated me too much. And I LOVE disney movies.

I have also played ffx and ffxii. I happened to enjoy FFX, but I hate FFXII. Mainly because its all plot, and no story. Seriously, to enjoy the game, you already have to know the entire plot, and that means you have to have already played it.

But otherwise, exceptin Breath of Fire 2, I havent played any other of those games (though I've recognize most of them).

Though right now, I'm still leaning towards just throwing down for a DS and pokemon...its just so addicting.

My biggest gripe with FFXII is actually the Gambit system. It makes battles an utterly boring affair with even less interactivity than usual.

If I want to watch the pretty images and click on a button every 10 minutes or so, I'll watch a goddamn DVD. I like my games with some more interaction than just "choose strategy, watch the AI play for you". FFXII isn't a game, it's an interactive DVD, and I mean that as an insult, not as a compliment. Battles bore me to tears.

By the way, I assume by your handle that you already played every Fire Emblem you could get your hands on, right?

If not, go get the ROMs and a ZSNES/VBA, and play the crap out of all of them. NOW.

Ike, when it comes to PS2 RPGs, I'm gonna have to throw Suiko V out there. It's 80 hours of RPG genius, has a good soundtrack, great political machinations and needs no backstory.

If you want a challenging game that will stand up to repeated playthroughs (I'm on my twelfth.) you could do worse than to get hold of Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter.

SRPGs such as Disgaea, La Pucelle and Makai Kingdom are worth checking out. Disgaea was almost impossible to find for a while, so I don't know how easy they'd be to track down. But that's what E-bay and Amazon are for, right? ^_^

Isn't Suiko V the one on the boats? I'm not a fan of naval combat.

Actually, my handle is my real name. Or rather, its a nickname that I go by (as my name is Isaac....but I Like Ike :D). I have played the Fire Emblem that came out on the GBA, though. I get bored easily with Turn Based Tactics games....I like my war strategy games like Ogre Battle 64, yet sadly, I have yet to find one as good.

I've been hearing a lot of good stuff about Disagaea, and a lot of references to it, so that could be what I look into...but you say its hard to find?

Um. Suiko V is the one with the Sun Rune. The naval one is Suiko IV.

And there's not much naval combat. It plays just like a FE when there's some, in fact - move on squares and wham enemy - but the rest of the time it's a very classic turn based RPG.

I seriously think Suiko IV is underrated. It looks boring when you are navigating towards a new goal... until you realize that not only is it no slower than the old Suiko I and II world map walk speeds, but you actually LUG AROUND YOUR HEADQUARTERS once you get the Dauntless, which means no having to teleport back and redo the trip if a random encounter stomps you in the floor.

And once you discover an island, Viki can teleport you there anyway, so...

EDIT: Also, if Turn Based Strategy RPGs like FE bore you, skip Disgaea. While the humor is fun, it's really more of the same.

KOTOR is really good. I'd recommend it (and most other Bioware games, really), though if you've tried it and it's not your cup of tea... If you haven't played it, there's probably a free demo floating around somewhere.

My biggest gripe with FFXII is actually the Gambit system. It makes battles an utterly boring affair with even less interactivity than usual.
Agreed. I got a few hours in before quitting from sheer boredom. The story has potential, but it's not interesting enough to make me want to wade through the rest of the game for it. Plus, the characters seem flatter and less interesting than X's, though I can't pinpoint why exactly.

Avoid Gothic III (I and II are good) like the plague. It sucks... hard. Even if you have a cutting edge computer, it'll probably end up unplayable due to lag or crashes (or both). Even if you can play it, it's mostly just hundreds of fetch quests slapped together.

Morrowind is a great game. I thought Oblivion was great too. On the plus side, those two have massive mod communities, so there's a lot of stuff to try besides the official content.

I thought Jade Empire was really good, and if you don't have an Xbox there's a PC version out now. NWN is decent, and NWN2 is good, plus there's some really good mods out for them (especially NWN). I don't know much about console RPGs, especially ones for the PS2, so I can't help you with those.

Well, I second the recommendation of the dot hack games. One of the best strories ever.

And if you're looking for PC... Baldur's Gate 2. You don't have to play the first one (I didn't), and it has a great plot line, game play, and is basically the first D&D game that was any good.

Oh, and it has a crazy guy who thinks he has a hampster talking to him. GO FOR THE EYES, BOO!

want something old and refreshing for the pc? try planescape: torment. Of course, finding it would be an adventure itself, though i am from the philippines and the older stuff generally are like the holy grail here -_-;;

fallout 1 and 2 are also jewels, if you dig the post-apocalyptic genre for your rpgs.

note that these are not the typical hack-and-slash games, these generally revolve around dialogue choices and what not. still, these are some of rpg's greatest.

for the hack and slash, well, try the icewind dale series if you dig D&D. i'm not really into those games, i'd rather go shooters heh
