Mechs and Pilots

I've never really cared much for mecha anime as a genre. I prefer power armor in the style of the (American?) cartoon "EXO Squad" or whatever it was called, with suits not that much bigger than the human body. Or, hell, Iron Man.

I think...Heavy Arms is more my style. Massive long range arsenal, the ability to basically sit there and shoot down everything...

If only the damn thing didn't ran out of ammunitions so often tough... :(

The hidden wristblade was a nice touch too. One of the reason I like the Exia (that's its name right ?) in Gundam 00.

The other style of combat I prefer otherwise would be Duo and his Deathscythe. Great mobility, a kickass polearm that can shift between scythe and spear and a stealth mode that allow him to go all assassin from hell on his opponent ass. Awesome.

So yeah, Glass Cannon and Fragile Speedster are more my thing.

On the matter of pilots...well it's more a generalization of what I like in just about any medium, not just Giant Robo, but I have a soft spot for those guys who seem to be complete looser at first glance, act like one and all only to turn around and wipe the floor with the opposition in an heartbeat.

Kamina was kinda like that before he proved that his words were no mere boast.

I never cared for Iron Man, and I thought Exo-Squad so-so, though My brother loved it, and I think somewhere he still has a few VHS tapes of it.

Hmmm... what did you think of Bunta-kun from Full Metal Panic?

Never saw the series. It's on a list I've been meaning to get to, but haven't yet.

Bonta-kun.
It just looks harmless, until your bullets bounce off, and it starts shooting at you.
That being said, Bonta-kun was one of my favorite parts of FMP.

I would rather have Shinn than Kira on my side. Kira's treehugging personality nearly got him and a lot more people killed in several occasions, and he only got out of messy situations through godmoding, whereas for all that he made a Face Heel Turn, Shinn always placed his convictions above all else, even if that meant doing distasteful things.

Plus, at least Shinn has a female sidekick that can fight. Is Lacus useless eyecandy or what? At least Lunamaria threw her weight around...
Lacus WAS eyecandy... but she was also so much more. If you think about it, she was the consumate actress and manipulator of several key events. She only played dumb in the beginning, but when the shit hit the fan, she was able to organize a resistance, negotiate a peace, keep morale in soldiers against hopeless odds, and at the end of the series, she is rebuilding a civilization. I don't think you give her enough credit. She may not be an attacker, but she is excellent support. Just remember that for every fighting man, there's at least 5-6 people making sure he can fight.

Kira... I like him really. Yes, he was a tree-hugging pacifist... in the beginning. He earned his badass in combat. This is the same reason I like characters like Rodimus Prime or Simon. They weren't perfect, but they rose to the occasion as needed. In the end, Kira was still a pacifist, but he knew when to climb into the cockpit and shoot things. Shinn, on the other hand is the opposite. He let anger cloud his judgement. Yes he had conviction, and where did that lead him? He only became a tool. I'd rather that the guy piloting my unstoppable death machine was someone who listened to his conscience, and knew when to start shooting and when to quit.

Hear hear.

I really don't understand all these comments about Kira being a Gary Stu. In Destiny possibly(which I never really liked anyway as it seemed to be extremely contrived)but in the first series? No way. The only thing possibly "Too perfect" about him was his fighting skills. Even then from a certain point of view he wasn't perfect there. Let's go down the list.

First failure: he doesn't protect the shuttle with the refugees from Heliopolis when Yzak goes R436.

Second failure: He "kills" Waltfeld, something he clearly DOES NOT want to do.

Third failure: Nicol is killed when he simply reacts(understandable) and ends up cutting him in two.

Fourth failure: Tolle dies because of his lack of resolve to finish the fight earlier in the series leading in to Tolle learning to fly and subsequently his death at Athrun's hands.

Fifth failure: fails in saving Flay, who while a bitch(if reformed) was still someone important to Kira.

Honestly from what I've heard of Amuro Ray it sounds like Kira was modeled after him and given the amount of fanboyage I've seen around here about him you'd think Kira would be liked just as much at the least.

I prefer Titans.

Because, at the end of the day, there is little that can bring across (an entire planet) your point like an Imperator class Battle Titan. Also the best way to fight without leaving the comfort of your home... your heavily fortified, 120 meters tall, bristling with guns home.

Plus, the name just sounds badass.

On the same note, I was always partial to the Atlas. The Inner Sphere Atlas.

On the East side of the equation, I was also partial to... BIG O. (And Gurren Lagann, but shh... ;) )

Souskae had a difficult time finding buyers... I think it was the miami Police that bought some in the end. And I assume the Local Mafia guys eventually paid for their units.

Going over some older anime, I found one guy I think makes for a more annoying mech pilot than Shinn Asuka: Nekki Basara. He goes into the middle of a fight, doesn't fire weapons at the enemy, so he can sing them to submision. If he didn't want to shoot, he could at least offer himself as a distraction to the enemy... except he actually helps his enemies by trying to rescue them or getting in the military's way. It works in context, but in real life, this is the kind of guy who gets people killed.

To be fair, singing is horribly effective on Zentradi. So it makes sense Nekki would sing so much.

That said, if I had my pick, I'd just take Turn A and watch it go lol Moonlight Butterfly on everyone. :p Few things stop wars as decisively as YOUR WEAPONS NOT WORKING ANYMORE.

What Basara does in Macross 7 has tons of precedent in pretty much any Macross or Robotech series arc, starting with Minmay herself.

Music works in them, it worked on Zentradi, the Meltrani, the Masters, it worked in Plus, in the Macross II movie, etc...

Besides... Annoying macha pilots are the norm... Those from Martian Successor Nadesico come to mind though they were meant to be so, and IMHO far worse is the dreadful TTTGL series, where every last pilot I've seen in sub and dub is annoying (caught my mother watching a later episode dubbed just last night... yuck).

The more tank-like, the better.

As far as humanoids go, the Armored Command Unit wins for me. Because nothing says win quite like going from landing on a planet alone to being able to launch strategic nuclear strikes in ~30 minutes.
Except the Turn-A, which is hax.

But I always liked the 08th MS Team's RX-79.

Is it just me, or do mecha look a lot less sillier and more intimidating when painted in Amuro Ray colors?

Amuro Ray colors, meaning more black (i.e. the one on the left)?

The one on the foreground. Note the White Unicorn. White Devil, remember? What was the color scheme of the original gundam? Of course, if you find Black and Gold more intimidating, that's okay. It's Zengar's colors too, after all. ^_^ To me here the black upon white (like a tshirt or something) just emphasizes the toylike qualities of the figure.

Actually, the White and Blue color scheme there reminds me more of the Weissritter than the original Gundam. That makes it good in my book. You are right that the other one looks more like a toy with the black on white coloring. Black on gunmetal gray would work better, though a little gold trim doesn't hurt too much.

Well, forgive me, but Char's Counterattack had more impact on me than the original MS Gundam series. I see the black-on-white, I think "Nu Gundam".

The blue-white one is lacking red, so the connection didn't link up.

I see your point. :) Though the Hi-Nu had always been meant to be blue (or rather, purplish).

#49
RX-78-2 had Parade colors of Blue, Yellow, White, and Red.

Amuro Ray colors are generally referring to Hi-Nu's colors of Blue and White.

Also, I can't believe I forgot to mention my love for Garrod Ran and The GX Divider. Harmonica Cannon is love~
