Movies you'd want to see

Wound up talking bout the Harry Potter series at work today, and how it's amazing that such a generally mediocre story (really, hearing people go on about how Rowling is an amazing author and whatnot makes me sick.) is so incredibly popular and well known, when there's tons of better (and older even) book series out there that aren't that well known or have ever had a movie made. Same could be said for game series or even anime (Is the live action Eva movie still being worked on? Haven't heard news of that in ages)

So, the point of this topic: If you could pick a book series or anime or game to get turned into a move; what would you pick and who could you see playing various roles?

I just watch movies myself and really have no damn clue on which actor is who or what, so the only movie suggestion I can thinka off the top of my head: I'd love to see a big screen adaptation of the Marvel Zombies comics. Or even just Marvel Zombies vs Army of Darkness (cause they'd need to bring in Bruce to play Ash )

I'd love to see the Belgariad and Mallorean or the Elenium and Tamuli series by David Eddings made into a series of movies or an anime.

The Live Action EVA was actually a con job, a spoof. It doesn't exist and never did. It fooled a lot of people though.

I don't think you could do the entire wheel of time series, in movie form, in under 30 movies. If that few.

And I definitely like the idea of the Belgariad or the Elenium in movie form... David Eddings wrote some amazing stuff.

Hehehe. Just the thought of a live action movie is terrifying huh? Like a bad memory that refuses to go away. :p

As for the Eva movies, 'officially', it is still a go. How fast, well, right now apparently, it's at a snails pace.

As for movies I would like to see, I'm kind of eager for a live action Ghost in the Shell movie. Granted, we all know, Hollywood as a way of screwing anything good up. But, if the original creators are on board, and if they get the right actors/actresses, maybe... just maybe, it would be good.

And this is true for all series/books/comics/etc. that could make a good movie. It's only good if the people behind are good.

Stephen R Lawhead's

"Pendragon Saga", "Song of Albion", "Empyrion", or "The Dragon King Trilogy"

possible other's include:

Mercedes Lackey's

"Exile's Honor" and "Exile's Valor", with "Take a Thief" as a sub-story

LLoyd Alexander's:

"Taran Wanderer" (yeah, all the others may have been made into cartoons, but that one is my favorite even though it's more of a side-story than anything else)

Anne McCaffrey:

"Dragon Riders of Pern" and "The Harper Hall of Pern"

Dennis L. McKiernan's:

"Iron Tower Trilogy" (who doesn't like Super-Archer Hobbits?)

Elizabeth Moon's:

"Deed of Paksenarrion" (chances are i misspelled the name)

C. S. Lewis's:

"The Cosmic Trilogy" (Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength)

and i think i'll stop here for now. comments?

Oath of Swords (by David Weber)
Bahzell Bahnakson is no knight in shining armour. He has problems of his own to deal with: a violated hostage bond, a vengeful prince, a price on his head. So how does he end up a thousand leagues from home, neckdeep in political intrigue, assassins, demons, psionicists, evil sorcery, white sorcery, dark gods, good gods, bad poets, greedy landlords and most of Bortalik Bay? Well it's all the War God's fault...

March Upcountry (by David Weber and John Ringo)
Roger Ramius Sergei Chang MacClintock was young, handsome, atheltic, an excellent dresser, and third in line for the Throne of Man. He was also spoiled, self-centered and petulant. He's shipwrecked on a planet with jungles full of damnbeats, killerpillars, carnivorous plants and barbarian hordes with really bad dispositions. Now all Roger has to do is hike halfway around the planet, capture a spaceport from the Bad Guys, commandeer a starship and then go home... where his problems will really begin.

Legend (by David Gemmell)
The lands of the Drenai stand almost helpless before the hordes of the Nadir. Only one fortress remains that can hold back the invader - a fortress defended by a brave but incompetent officer, a few thousand farmers with weapons they barely know how to use... and a dying old man who just happens to be the greatest hero in all the long history of the Drenai.

Retief! (by Keith Laumer)
It would probably make a better TV series than movie, but the Retief stories would be excellent: the adventures of the two-fisted Terran diplomat Jaime Retief as he twists arms and breaks heads to make space safe for humanity despite the best efforts of the alien Groaci and the bumbling Corps Diplomatic of Terra.

Holy shit! I was about to say Susan Cooper and The Dark is Rising, then decided to find a wiki link for those that has no idea what that is, only to discover that there is a movie coming that I hadn't heard about!

This year!

Awesome!

Can't say that I'm looking forward to the changes they've made in the film compared to the plot in the books, but what the heck. Hopefully, it'll work anyway...

Starship Trooper (Heinlein)
I'd love to see a version that was true to the book, hulking APE armor, mini-nukes, Skinnies, and all the other crazyness of that military dictatorship.

Holy fucking mother of god! Thats the best news I've heard in ages; I love the Dark is Rising series. Though now that I've heard it'll be a movie I'm praying to the gods that it doesn't get schmucked up by Hollywood trying to 'improve' things.

And I just wanna second, Pern Movies and Foundation movies would be awesome. As for Wheel of Time, if you managed to clean up some of the plot dragging Jordan does ( I haven't read all of the books but the plot could be seriously sped up I'm sure) you could probably get it done in 5 or so movies. Mebbe.

I was thinking, seeing somethign done with Diane Duane's Young Wizard series (which existed way before Harry Potter and is much much MUCH better IMO) as a movie or mebbe a short series of TV movies, one for each book. Still haven't finished Wizards Holiday though, or started Wizards at War.

If they were to do the Wheel of Time as movies they should stick with Jordan's original plan. End it at book three.

My mother has the books from when they first came out, and it's clearly labeled as a trilogy. Turns out it was popular so they wanted Jordan to continue, unfortunately he only had it plotted out to about book six IIRC. That's why the later stuff starts suckin'.

I'd like to see a Transmetropolitan movie

Also Top Ten, but Alan Moore's stuff doesn't really lend itself to movie adaptations which is making me hesitant about the Watchmen movie :(

I'd also like to see a movie adaptation of the fanfic In Vain Doth Valour Bleed because it's an awesome story.

Was just thinking, if Wheel of Time wouldn't really lend itself well to movie format (just too much damn story to tell) then mebbe it'd translate better to a TV series. One hour show with a few~several seasons could do it.

Agreed. Though reading the wiki entry it seems they're already dicking around with the story. I mean WTF? They're changing Will (and presumably his family as well, I didn't get to the end of the entry so for all I know he's also adopted now as well. Ugh) to be American now, supposedly to make him more of an 'outsider' (which I don't recall him ever really being, even if the Drew children thought he was a bit odd, but he was sorta on duty when around them) there's now going to be sibling rivalry and family tensions (again don't recall this in the least from the books, unless you count the lack of privacy do to such a large family) and some sorta romantic interest for Will is gettin tossed in (something completely lacking in the books, unless you feel like reading into Will's interactions with Jane :huh.: )

Still looking forward to the movie, but also can't help but wonder how much of the plot I'll actually recognize by the time it hits theaters :headbanger: :headbanger: :headbanger:

Transmetropolitan; at least three hours to cover it and with the same ending, though have the epilogue part after the credits

The Watchmen; don't know how this would work as a movie, but from what I've heard if they can VASTLY compress everything Moore stuck into the book, not dumb it down like they did to V for Vendetta and/or make it into a political allegory like 300, and keep the pacing of it juuuust right, the movie could work.

ALSO, no Mr. Manhattan with pants, and no Keanu Reeves to play him. EVER. Again, also, no cop-out with the ending. It has to stay the same.

American Gods, by Neil Gaiman would also make a fantastic movie. It'd have to be long, though, and it would have to not be dumbed down with all of the small plot twists that Neil throws into it towards the end.

Random recs for movies/Movies the should be made right now
Cthuhlu
30 Days of Night
A proper Spiderman movie
A proper X-men movie
The DMZ
BONE, an animated trilogy
Pride of Baghdad (Animated, of course; so that the message STICKS
W3 (Again, animated)
Marvels (The world of the superhero told through a normal reporters eyes.)
MAUS (Animated.)
Crooked Little Vein (by Warren Ellis. It'd be like...hardcore R material, especially for the Godzilla Bukkake)
Pendragon (by DJ Machale; it'd run like 10 movies, though, so maybe it'd be better as a series)

TV Series
The Walking Dead
PREACHER
FABLES
Jack of FABLES (A Spin-off series)
The SANDMAN
LUCIFER (A spin-off series)
The Invisibles
Kushiel's Dart/Mark/Ect. (Oh god, it's like pure condensed SEX filled in with awesome politics and...GOD.)

Consequently, I recommend you read/buy/download all of these aforementionds comic books, since they are awesome!good.
