I think it's part of how she's generally treated as 'awesome amazing protagonist' girl without much work put in to actually develop her as such. Plus, I don't know, she just sorta doesn't mesh with me. Usually, I tend to favor the quiet girl to win or whatever, but in this instance she just rubs me the wrong way.
Do you go out of your way to filter out Sakura fics? Because I can assure you there's far more "Girl-Powah!" Sakura-wank than any other female character. Granted, as many have theorized, this is probably an East vs. West difference, since Sakura seems to be the darling of almost every girl with a tumblr account.
But I will concede one thing to you. It fucking drives me up the wall when authors turn Hinata into a female version of Neji or Sasuke. God, I'd rather have the author w-w-write h-h-her l-l-l-ike t-t-this than read about super smart, cold, calculating bitch who's still in love with an idiot for some reason.

I do actually have a tendency to filter out Sakura fics, depending on the quality of the backstory. If she's just suddenly awesome it irritates me as much as Hinata. There needs to be SOME kind of alteration to her personality matrix that's explored and expanded. Any kind of fic that just sort of says "LOOK HOW GREAT THIS CHARACTER IS!!1!!" I tend to tune out unless there is a good reasonable/organic explanation for WHY said character is different from their canon self.
I think my tolerance is lower for Hinata fics than it is for Sakura fics though for some reason. I reacted so strongly to this one Hinata time travel fic that I started working on a Kiba fic that was functionally a rebuttal.

Probably because half of Hinata's character\point early on was her being a failure prone to crumble under pressure, while Sakura was shown having "elements of awesome" since early(like her chakra control in Wave, and SASUKE of all people praising her genjutsu detecting skill in the chunin exam).
Also, she was a bitch.
So, yeah, Sakura simply lends herself much better to "LOOK HOW GREAT THIS CHARACTER IS!!1!!"-type fics.

As said before, people on NaruSaku.com have been quoted as calling Sakura their "Queen." "Let Hinata be their princess, we have our Queen." Or something like that. I'm seriously considering investigating their beliefs in why NaruSaku is "so obvious," not to antagonize, but because I'm sincerely interested in hearing what exactly is their proof, and why, as given their cited points of interests makes me scratch my head as to why they would call most of them NaruSaku indicators. Of course, given that they went into a full forum lockdown for over two months and have mods quite willing to ban anyone that even looks at their ship funny, I'd probably get cut down two days in, and that's being generous.
I'd rather both of them die in a fire, thankyouverymuch. The supreme stuttering thing is so overblown and makes things virtually unreadable, I automatically X out of fics as soon as it comes up in several consecutive sentences for no damn reason. And the Neji-with-tits!Hinata is so far from what I'm thinking when it comes to Hinata I just can't relate to it at all. It's one thing for Hinata to develop into that, like in "People Lie" -- there's an evolution of character, and that makes her interesting to see her effectively break and do something different. If this cold version is just a Queenly mask due to circumstances, all right, there's a story there that I want to read about. But Neji-With-Tits!Hinata as default? Please... we could just GB Neji and save ourselves the trouble.

It's funny that Sakura has virtually all the hallmarks of being a First Girl tsundere if Naruto was a harem comedy, and some extra perks to make her a stand-out, but the Japanese public shunned her like Konoha shunned Naruto. Would it have been different if she was receptive towards Naurto in the beginning instead of Sasuke?

The "problem" with Sakura is mainly that she focused her tsun toward Naruto and her dere toward Sasuke.
She never, ever went dere for Naruto. She learnt to respect him, but that was it.
If she'd given up on persuing Sasuke in part 1 and shown an active interest in Naruto, she'd probably be more popular.

Of course, this was the poll given chapter 60. During the forest of Death. By the way, Hinata is already 10th by this point. Damn impressive considering her screentime consists of having a crush on Naruto and being willing to let him copy her test.
By the second popularity poll, right around the time of the Chuunin exam tournament (chapter 107), Sakura has dropped all the way to 14th!
This is a pretty big drop. Even if you just look at the number of voters (3055 vs 359). I guess all the cool characters introduced that got a chance to show off made their mark, while before we didn't know much about them.
By this point, Hinata has unsurprisingly (due to her fight with Neji) climbed up to 6th place.
By the way, Minato placed 12th. Not bad for a guy who only showed up as a stone monument and a picture.
Sakura actually beats Hinata in later polls. Not that hard since the latter barely appears.
Although in the last one (during the War Arc) Hinata is on top again.

Nah, I feel like Hinata haters are a vocal Mediumority. There's not so few that you'd dismiss them out of hand, but there certainly aren't enough of them to make any dramatic waves, apart from 3 weeks of losing their shit after the release of The Last. I feel like many people are "meh" on Hinata, not really loving her, but not disliking her either, since she hasn't given much reason for hate, apart from maybe having a weak spirit/will at the beginning of the series.
Sakura, on the other hand...damn, that girl has racked up some crazy air miles on her Hate Express card.

I think The Last had the Hinata Haters being super-vocal, joined by the NaruAnybodybuthinata lovers.
Those who were simply Meh, did remain Meh(I guess a minor part might have joined the Haters, as well another minor part might have warmed to Hinata. Still, I don't think the % would change much)

If you get past the shitty fanfiction writers and cliches, the lack of screentime and character development(lol) afforded to Hinata (say, compared to Sakura), and how jaded we've become as a fandom, this is actually a very sweet pairing.
