Another huge problem is the quoting system. It's dumb if i want to quote different people, and the fact that quotes next in each other so easily is terrible.
Though the quotes are manageable. Maybe not inconvenient but, you can simply open the topic in a new window and quote from there. Only thing that requires more than just (quote and /quote with the [] in it) is when you're identifying who it is. In those cases, I just copy the coding that enabled names, and just, change the name.
Actually, I disagree. The quote tagging system as used in Invision works practically identically as everywhere else.
And yet I've never seen so many nested quotes in my life. I wonder why.

This has nothing to do with BBCode, it has to do with how the server handles the quote tag in the first place. The first problem is this dumb extra window to put what you're quoting in. The second is that the tag itself is messed up.

I honestly do not know what you are talking about.

You are supposed to be able to nest quotes. Even if the individual forum has rules against it (like Fukufics), the forum software (Beehive, Invision, etc...) does not have any such limitations. Nested tags is used on far more than Quote, though it is the single most visible.

The quote window is of a minor annoyance at best, though it is supposed to be a feature. I myself only sometimes bother with it, and practically never when doing multiple quotes.

If it is an issue, simply do an Add Reply button to make posts, rather than Quote, then paste in the item(s) quoting. SimmyC suggested similar methodology.

Or you could just highlight the text you wanted to quote after copying it into your post and then hit the quote button.

Ok, i kinda did infact word it wrong by saying that the tag was messed up.

I'm saying that you don't even have to make a rule about it by changing how the tag works and preventing it from quoting quotes altogether, and it's probably easier with other software.

Also, how dare you try to make me do more work than i have to

Personally, the only site that has a pay to join rule that I understand is Stardestroyer.net and that board has one where you have to use an email that is paid for (mainly those given from your internet provider) or you pay a one time and small registration fee.

SomethingAwful is pay to join, but we're not talking about PtJ anymore.

Yes, this is a nerco, so what?

----

I would like to just hand out this bit of info for those that want to know and for those that complain about TFF using InvisionFree:

Cost to buy and receive InvisionFree's TFF database (members, posts, and info): Greater then $60 (one time fee) and the InvisionFree forum should still exist.

Cost for leasing or buying a year long permission to use VBulletin forum software: $100 to $140 per year.

Leasing means that TFF has to follow VBulletin's ToS and allowable content.

Buying means that the forum admin's ToS and allowable content will have to be followed, plus you have add on the cost of getting a server for this. Which is negotiable as I know several people that are more then willing to host TFF on their server.

Also, if those servers don't work, it would cost $60 to $80 for a good server.

For the first year alone, it would cost nearly $200. For every year after, it would cost $100 to $180.

---

Honestly, I hope TFF converts to Zetaboard so we have an actual search function. But after the conversion to Zeta, TFF will look quite ugly until Hawk or whomever he assigns to finds a few custom themes for the board. <-- In reference to when Hawk had a topic up here about possibly converting to Zeta.

Here's the example of a default Zetaboard.

Ahhh... that is a UI issue... getting user satisfaction on a UI design is a tough thing indeed.

You see... I've yet to see a forum software I've liked all aspects to.

Delphi... chases users away with its multilevel memberships, and limited customizing. Best all around though. Does not support BBCode, but a hybrid HTML varient. Search depends upon membership level.

Beehive... Per others, slightly more flexible and better speed than MXBoards, but a royal pain to maintain. But has advantages in left side menus (I find it infinately easier to navigate that type than here), and file attachments in posts and PM's. it also accurately tracks which posts have been viewed or not, and if the person you direct a post to has read it or not. Does not support BBCode, but a hybrid HTML varient. Search works and is unlimited.

VBullitin... a bit sparce, supports BBCode, search only seems to work so-so for me when I've tried it. Have not tried PM's, dislike navigation style

InvisionFree... Post edit screen is very annoying, dislike navigation style, no file attachments allowed (at least on the ones I go to). No way to direct a post in a thread to a specific member, no way to know if specific member has read post. Also has habit of sometimes resetting the threads visited function, if close browser before seeing all the new threads. Supports BBCode. Additionally, it allows only one skin in the forum, and no default provided if the site owner overrides it. This is an issue for me with the Be Your True Mind forum, as I hate that scheme. Search function is a utter failure.

PHP... Of the ones with no left side navigation, I like this one best. Supports BBCode. Does not support attachments in the ones I go to. Search is iffy. Skins suck, at least at fukufics, since it breeaks most of my navigation and scroll keys in IE. Lukily, unlike Invision, it allows the system default to still work if you override the default. It has the dreadful problem of resetting the threads viewed indicators every time the site is visited with a different browser window. Feels smoothest, but has occasional downtimes, unceretain if that is due to the server or software though.
