Pet Peeve Of The Day

Grrr...

Author notes and worse side comments in the middle of chapters/paragraphs/sentances/dialog.

I do not care if the author wants to makes comments/disclaimers/notes/whatever at top or bottom, but for goodness sake, must we be innudated with them *within* the story.

I can't say how many times I've run into just that in different fan fiction stories in just the last three days. Is it ever annoying. Not only does it ruin the flow of the story, and the mood, most of the time they are not even needed and are stupid.

Even dumber are the ones with the author specifically stating in the note they *know* you might be annoyed, and then do it anyway.

If they *must* be added in, I don't see how it can be so hard it could be to just use a reference number and list them at the bottom.

Because they are authors who failed at school and never learned how to format a paper.

Ah yes. Author's notes in the middle of story is a sign of a bad writer.

Which, early in my fanfic writing days, I did just that. :unsure!:

Of course, I learned and now put the ANs at the end of a chapter, or at the beginning of it.

At least I'm learning from my mistakes. I'm not so sure about certain other people.

Author's notes in the middle of story = Fail... or not? There are some RARE cases where the author manages to use that to his/her advantage with some nice results if i may say so. But then again those cases are hard to find... :sisi:

A personal peeve of mine is when a portion of the dialogue is in Japanese. Look, I understand that the series is originally written in said language, but for Heaven's Sake, I need to understand the dialogue, and even though I know a good deal thanks to anime, I don't want to be jumping from dialogue to the bottom of the page where you MIGHT be kind enough to leave some translation.

Funnily enough, that story I was reading ALSO has author's notes in the midst of the story. It seems the author's notes were being used for emphasis, as clearly there was not enough writing skill involved to do so. :headbanger:

So Naruto should be a "low-level ninja " ? :D

But I understand the feeling . Why baka over cute , gaki over brat , and my personnal critical hit , Sessha over I ?I was stumped by that one until I got Disgaea 2 -_-
Of course ,when I find these little gems right along with CAPS ABUSE , it doesn't help my mood any.

Is there a way to post "the twenty stupids shits you should never do in your fanfiction"right on the main page of FF.net? That might help the situation .I'm not holding my breath ,though.

Here is a minor one. On this forum only, I've seen since becoming a member here the occasional word in people's posts coming up instead of a word as

'/b/'

What the hack does that mean? Or is that some setting I need to change in my profile?

Well, I was not singling any specifc author out (and none of the stories were from here), and had these stories done it only once or twice, I would not overly care, but I was even reading a couple different ones where they basically stated they knew the reader would find it annoying, and did so anyway. What kind of logic is that.

Another minor peeve, but not really fan ficiton so much as anime dubs. I find it a bit off-putting to constantly hear someone constantly referring to their mother or father as Mr. or Miss., both to a third party, and directly to them even in private. The Nuku Nuku TV series dubb immediately comes to mind (Ryunnoske constantly referring to his mom as Miss Akiko for example), but others do it as well.

This may or may not in fact be correct address in Japan if taking a literal db,, but it comes off completely wrong translated, as it seems like the haracter is constantly mad at them.

Ummm... unless you meant it as a joke, 'Baka' <> 'Cute'.

Nah, I'm referring more to just the dialogue. I don't mind terms, like Genin, Jounin, and Hokage, stuff like that. But "Dare asoko?" and "Dare... omaesan?" and ""Ketsubou.. boku...wa... genjuu." He translates, that's great, but ... I don't know that much Japanese! These aren't terms it's Dialogue! Not a Title! I allow some leeway but when monster works, why use bakemono? I mean, dude. It's just annoying.

that means people are talking about (or in the fashion of) the /b/ thread on 4chan or other such image/bulleting boards

/b/ is renown for it's crazyness and the penchant for it's (more often than not) annonymous writers to begin a thread, discuss and obliterate the english (if applicable) language alonside continuing with further randomness and off topic (and sometimes incomprehensible) humour

ahh... the whole -san suffix even within family members
sometimes with distant/dissasociated family members a person might keep a level of formality... you cited a quasi textbook case where the mother is distanced to the child, and therefore he calls her by her name instead of 'mother'...
depends on the relationship and how it's to be percieved... usually children closer to their parents siblings would call them such (mom, dad, bother, sister, etc)... where in other cases they would call them by name or last name (depending on the nature of the famillial issue)

Well, I knew of 4chan, and the other chan boards, though I do not go there myself. However, outside of this forum, I have *never* seen it written that way. But thanks for clearing it up.

I do not mind the 'san' in fan fiction, but hearing it translated back into 'Miss Akiko' and the like just sounds wrong. To me it comes across as if there was some greivance between them. No matter, as it is unlikely to change.

I've been around for a while in the anime boards and watching/reading anime/manga/fanfiction. Though I'm still new here.

My peeve. In Naruto fanon, the idea that every male is perverted and unworthy of any non-fangirl woman in the series. Hell, quite a few of these fanons have gotten the idea that showing any interest in the opposite sex is perverse and must be stomped out. I see this in a fic, and I just want to hurl.

Blame Takahashi for that. Her and Akane.

True. One thing i might add though: It's only true about the women, most of the girls have fan girl tendencies. *If i'm not wrong Tayuya was the only one spared of this.*

Seems to me that a nice rack flashed in the face beats pervsion just fine. Or a Sexy no Jutsu if one is able :p

Course, aside from Tsunade and Anko it seems like all the women in Naruto are boards (you can argue for Kurenai, but I don't recall her outfit showcasing her figure all that well)

Kurenai has a decent bust. Hinata is fricken huge. Possibly Yugao is good sized, but I'm not positive.

Heh...

It is depressing just how many hits one gets on fanFiction.NET, FicWad.COM, and MediaMiner.ORG when using their search engines for 'mpreg'. I did not search for related, as I just wanted a baseline.

Though oddly, MediaMiner.ORG seemed to have the least at 29. FanFiction.NET, had the most, at 1471. FicWad.COM had 37.

Note though, that count is odd, as FicWad.COM searched chapter descriptions, not story ones, and most authors have thedescription copied into all, taking that into account, FicWad.COM has the least.

EDIT:

Heh, running that same check on the anime section at AFF yeilds some 37 as well.
