Ranma ½ Ranma Off-Topic Thread

There seems to be a good chance no one gets what this thread is for. It serves many purposes.

One of which is for when a couple posters are spamming a thread with off-topic posts and people want them to stop. In an effort to end threadjacking, they can be pointed to here.

Another purpose for this thread is to be a community thread where people can chat and post random things. Similar to the General section, but for the Ranma section. It is a good way to build bonds between members here.

I've seen it work to great success on other boards. Usually the threads are called Community Threads, but the primary one I used was unique and called the Off-Topic Thread. I liked that one and decided to try and get it going somewhere else. If the idea works out, then great. If not, oh well.

Weird hypothetical question. If you absolutely had to write a "Mrs Tendo is alive" fic, and decided to make her an already existing fictional character from absolutely any work of fiction, who would you pick?

I don't care if it makes sense. I don't care if you pick because it would make for an interesting story, be funny or whatever. I'm just interested in seeing who you would pick and the reason you would do so. If at all possible I'd love to see what you think would happen from such a story.

I suppose it would depend upon intent... Is it the intent to pick someone that makes sense given the personalities of the three daughters? Or someone we would like to raise them so they turn out different.

If the former, someone like Aoi Sakuraba comes to mind.

If the Latter, maybe someone like Revy from Black Lagoon.

Akane from Dual Parallel Trouble Adventure might be an interesting one.

Ayane from Kaze no Stigma?

The main issue, any choice picked would have had to be with Soun, which I find repugnant...

When did Mrs Tendo die anyway? The answer to that question would help explain whether her daughters are so dysfunctional because they grew up without a mother, or because their mother was not a particularly good parent. That could influence your choice of who you'd pick to play her part.

Several years (likely six-plus) before the start of the series. It's not said when.

I left that point up in the air so that anyone wishing to answer could do so for any reason they liked. Hell, you could even make it so that you can punish Soun for being such a clown if you liked. I'm just interested in seeing what people come up with and why.

I think fanon had her die about 10 years before the series, so Kasumi was 9, Nabiki 7, and Akane 6. That works well enough for me, so that is the time I would use if it ever came up.

This wasn't exactly my plan for the thread, since that was basically just a miscellaneous plot idea, but it's activity. I will take it :p

Whenever I see someone using the "Nermia" misspell, it makes me want to reach out across the Internet and slap the writer.

Just saying, that's a really obnoxiously common mistake.

So is 'Nadoka', 'Nekohatten', 'Ukchan' to name but a few.

I loathe misspellings of series-specific names in any fanfic for any fandom I read. It's unacceptable and should be rewarded by closing the window and leaving negative reviews.

Spelling mistakes suck. There are many common issues I see in Ranma fics. Not all of them are spelling issues. Another thing they often get wrong is assuming Nerima is right next to Juuban. I can't remember if Juuban itself is real, or if Minato is, but the real one is in the south eastern corner of Tokyo, while Nerima is in the north western part. I remember someone showing a map of all the tokyo wards, and they are pretty damn far apart.

Juuban is the school's name, possibly also the name of an area within the ward, but not the name of the ward itself. I'm pretty sure Juuban is fictional.

IIRC its Azabu-Juuban. Part of district of Minato. Or something.

Wow, that really doesn't display well. Anyway, Minato isn't exactly on the opposite corner, though it sorta is. Minato is centrally located, but it's on the water, and a whole quadrant is missing. It's about 4 wards away. Only about 10KM from border to border. About 30KM at max, from opposite corner to opposite corner.

Yeah. There's been a thread about it over at fukufics.
It was commented on here as well, in a couple different threads

I seriously doubt I'd want to spend the money to reacquire the whole thing on bluray.

Now, if they had offered to continue it to the end of the manga, and did this, that would be different.

But it has been my experience that unless a series specifically made for it, Bluray, while an improvement if the effort was taken to do it right, is not worth it if already have it on DVD. If do not have it, or have it in a older format like VCD or VHS or Beta, that is different.

I might consider it for season 7. When I bought My DVD copies, I bought each season in box set form for the 1st 6 seasons... but season 7 was not in box set form at that time, so I bought the individual DVD's.

During the incident with the Xi Fa Xiang Gao Shiatsu, we see that in addition to forgetting everything about Ranma, Akane is unable to form or associate new memories of him. She's even unable to retain his name, thinking that her friends are talking about "Rama" and "Rumba" (in the translated version, obviously. I'm sure that the original version had different word-play.)

The thing is, we sort of see a more subtle version of similar behaviour later on, with Akane being unable to make mental connections on a certain subject: P-chan. The Mark of the Gods arc probably being the most severe example of this.

During the Breaking Point training, there's a fairly large period of time where Akane, Cologne, and Ryoga are all isolated in the same area, while Ranma's off dodging bees. It's possible that during this time-period, Cologne made an attempt to manipulate Akane into giving up on Ranma by talking Ryoga up, and while doing so mentioned Ryoga's curse, causing Akane to realise that Ryoga (who she's only really met twice at this point, during the first fight with Ranma and the Ice Skating competition,) is her pet.

I'd imagine that it would be fairly in-character for Cologne at this point to use a memory shiatsu point to erase Akane's memory of the conversation, and implant conditioning that prevents Akane from ever realising the truth. She could probably also condition Akane to believe, as an incontrovertible fact, that Ryoga is a nice, upstanding young man who'd never do anything perverted. Once that was done, Akane wouldn't be able to think of Ryoga as a pervert, even if she walked in on him in bed with both her sisters.
