Saddest scenes in Manga and Anime

#26
Here's what I wrote in the other thread:

The end of Maburaho episode 12. Too bad the show went down the drain after that.

The end of Nadesico (the TV show, not the craptacular movie).

The elevator scene in the Utena movie.

The infamous proposal scene in Inuyasha. Leave it to Takahashi to slowly build up the mood and knock it down in one fell swoop.

Vandread 2nd Stage, the episode where Bart shaves his head.
None of those made me cry, though. The only time I remember crying during an Anime was Nephrite's death in Sailor Moon.

And if you tell people that haven't seen it, they think you're lame.

Then, should you ever get them to watch it, most of them do the same damn thing :snigger:

I sure as hell know my eyes were damp.

Kamina's death... I feel like I should've cried, but I was in shock. I didn't see it coming, so the shock really numbed me until I'd watched a ways further, and by then things had gotten better.

Kanon and Air...basically the whole series for each of them...

Though to choose only one moment, it was probably the end of Makoto's arc in the Kanon anime...

Auuuu~
This. I still cry every time I see the Makoto ending.

Now that I think about it, I never did finish watching Air. I need to go download that and watch the whole thing through.
For me, it was actually the next to the last episode of Kanon the second series:
"I want my beloved to be happy"

That, and the Goal scene in Air.

Clannad's Episode 14 where Kotomi learns the truth about her parent's final wish...

Actually, all of Key's works are real tearjerkers, I highly recommend them all.

There are other anime that I like though I guess others will not agree, like:

Gundam Seed Destiny: "I'm sorry, Gil... but he wishes for a future."
"I finally have a past..."

that was the only reason I liked that series really...

or

Full Metal Alchemist: the funeral of Maes Hughes, and his daughter is there wondering why her father is being buried, not understanding what it means.

ALL of End of Evangelion...

It starts with a bit that never fails to make me wince, and it goes downhill from there.

:huh!:

:sick3:

The one bright moment, Asuka's return, is quickly stomped down and made irrelevant.

The end still makes me briefly contemplate cyanide pills.

:sweat2:
more like contemplating pills that combine cyanide and arsenic.

Dr. Leo Shisho from GaoGaiGar. I didn't see that one coming. Granted, he got to be with his dead wife again, but still... For such an upbeat show, that was rather sad. And the ending of GaoGaiGar FINAL was really melancholy too.

I'm *really* surprised that no one's mentioned Graveyard of the Fireflies, by the same Studio Ghibli that did Spirited Away, Totoro, Porco Rosso, and Princess Mononoke.

The whole movie is about two children slowly starving to death in the midst of WWII, so...

It really is a movie you'll only watch once -- and not because it's bad, but because it's that good.

Everyone who has seen Grave of the Fireflys repressed the memory so that they don't fall into a depressive coma -_-

Film critic Roger Ebert gave this film a high reiview, stating it was probably one of the most powerful war films ever made. There is a live action film as well, but it has additional characters and POV and not as gut-wrenching as the anime film.

Ebert review here.

End of Evangelion no matter how suicidal it makes me feel, is my crack. I live for angst. And that movie is the ultimate in it.

Yeah, the finale of the first series of El-Hazard OVAs. I watched the whole run in one go, and was so distracted by the shiny that I actually got flat-footed by Ifurita sacrificing herself ... then it was all blank disbelief and me going 'wtf, you can't end it like this!' before the sun rose. Great finish.

Bubblegum Crisis 2032, up to and including Moonlight Rambler. In Red Eyes the series tone shifted since the studio started listening to the fans (which was a bad decision as far as I'm concerned) but before that, pretty much every episode ... well, you know. It's why I see BGC as a tribute to continuing on in the face of overwhelming odds, adversity, and outright _failure_. Something the 2040 iteration didn't seem to be able to grasp at all. If it's not sad as hell, you're not watching it right.

Mai-HIME, after the plot-hammer of doom was introduced after the mid-season. Haruka going all sparkly, and the outcome of the Shizuru vs Natsuki fight, specifically.

You sir, are a masochist. End of Evangelion is horrific, while funny at times at how bad it makes you cringe and sometimes wtf, it is nevertheless the end-all of angst. How one can enjoy such a thing is beyond me...

You sir don't know me very well. Angst is my crack.

I find this entertaining. And its my favorite movie...

I watch eva for the angst and the complete mindfuck that it is.

On Topic.

Beck: Last episode when the group reminisces about their American tour. And the Grateful Sound Fes, in the manga.. :blue: So sad its gone..

Initial D Extra stage, when Mako leaves after Iketani doesn't show up. Idiot...

Dunno how you do it, Akina.

I hate angst so much that I've purged it from my emotional range, and start punching my friends whenever they start angsting so they rage at me instead of angsting at life.

Hell, I can't even watch BSG.

That's because he can probably understand fluent Japanese very well and/or he is Japanese. In which case Evangelion is like his backyard filled with half-buried broken corpses.

He's one crazy motherfucker and that's all there is to him.

Filled with half broken corpses? Maybe..

Though i can only write something truly good if has angst.. anyone who read what i can write should know.. and that's severely watered down from what's in my head.

I also forgot to add this and this to my list of favorites.

And... what's BSG?

First off, Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service is epic, and I'd hardly call it angsty - not what I've read of it at least.

Secondly, I was just rewatching Outlaw Star, and I got to episode 4...

Yeah, right there - the death of Hot Ice Hilda. Real tearjerker.

I did like her character from the little they had of her.

But the combination of Twilight Suzuka and Aisha ClanClan made it better. Plus that guy w/ the hockey mask and claws in the hot springs episode & the fact that there was a hot springs episode...

I'm kind of surprised no one's brought up Grave of the Fireflies (Hotaru no Haka). Can't watch that and keep my manly dignity intact.

For me Sakurano remains as the saddest series ever, even more than Eva. Everyone dies, it made me contemplate mass murder...

Also this manga, Forgot the name, Where this girl is always almost raped in very chapter so when the inevitable happens i was kinda immune to it. Not lying she always almost gets raped

Oh yeah, the scene where the chick in Fafner who has a crush on the protagonist sacrifices herself to save the island. That was tearjerking sad.

Granted EVERYONE dies in Fafner, but still, and what's her name's death in Gunparade March.

Lulz, we're such saps for tragedy.
