Some nutjob, possibly a student or teacher pushed to far, possibly some random other person, decides to shoot up the school that the Pilots attend, and specifically, enters their classroom. He shoots up the blackboard and random school supplies, to prove that his gun is both real, and loaded (prompting Rei to push the emergency Security call button on her NERV-issue cel phone).

After ranting for a little while, the guy demands that the girls stand up, and take their clothes off, recite their measurements, or some other humiliating act. Asuka's temper gets the better of her common sense, and she protests, and perhaps insults the guy (maybe he's one of the boys who wrote love notes that Asuka stomped on). He then shoots her, but in some place non-vital (or at least, something that won't kill her, because she gets to the hospital quickly enough). That puts Shinji into Berserker Mode.

Shinji comes to with Hikari and Touji holding him, the nut with the gun very messily dead on the ground, and Rei telling him that Asuka is not dead (feel free to change who's holding and/or talking to him - depending on where Asuka was hit, she might be one of them). Finally, after the trouble is over, Section 2 arrives, nearly shoots someone, and generally cements everyone's contempt for them (unless you want them to be competent-but-late).

So, the kids have to deal with seeing a classmate get shot, and seeing a scary guy get beaten to death by a general wuss, Shinji has to deal with the fact that he killed someone (depending on how you write him, it might not bother him that much, given the provocation), and Asuka has to deal with the fact that her mouth got her shot, and that her verbal punching bag killed the guy on her behalf.

The course of the series (well, the human interaction parts) is going to be a bit different from then on, no?

Better option, Shinji beats the nutjob close to death with his own gun.

Disarming him and pistol whipping him until he breaks at least a few bones is a nice, painful route to go. Also more mental scarring potential. It's easy to kill a person in a fit of rage, but harder to cause them immense pain without terminating their life. That would cause Shinji to pause later and consider if he is going to explode later like the man did, for being so brutal and sadistic.

And if Shinji is in Berserker!Mode, then he can do it. Look at what the Eva did to the 3rd, 12th, and 14th Angels. (Even if he doesn't like Asuka in the fic, that's still some major rage that could be harnessed against the gun toting nutcase.)

Edit: included the 13th by accident

... true, but Tokyo-3 is a rather low-stress teaching environment. One would have to change quite a bit in the background to explain it away. An attempt at the pilots seems more realistic, to me. The show never really delved into the political implications of a powerful paramilitary entity such as NERV.

edit:
Oh, if this happens after Zeruel (and Shinji's reappearance from the LCL), it might be a test about the 'Shinji Ikari is <s>the final</s> an Angel' theory.

Or both, after all Touji can't be the only student who has lost family during an Angel Attack, after all it is a war where they regulary use N2 devices and entire blocks are destroyed on Hand to Tentacle combat. Hell, even a Unit 00 activation test is potentially letal, and the son of a Section 2 goon will have access to weapons (also the Second Impact means that many of the survivors must have a gun of some kind for protection)

Also it would be interesting to see the reaction of the Section 2 detachment who is in charge of the school that holds at least four of the Children. Under the circunstances they probably have every janitor of the school carring an MP-5K and a secure radio, an escape armored car to transport the pilots to Nerv in case of an Angel Attack or a mor conventional emergency, and there is probably a safe house near with a SWAT team with orders to secure the Children first, then neutralizing the rest of the opposition (to stop them from killing potencial pilots).

That plus the more passive measures such as having the police doing sweeps on the area using both patrols and plain vehicules to scare any trouble-maker, and the MAGI keeping a closer eye on that zone to stop potencial terrorists from getting in.

Keep in mind that the children often arrived at NERV on their own, even during the attacks of the 4th and 9th Angels the Children were left to their methods for arriving at NERV. Even during the 3rd Angel's attack, Shinji is picked up by Mistato, and not Section 2. For all their supposed manpower and reach of influence, Section 2 only seems to consist of a few men that stick solely around NERV. They are never around except to harass Misato during Fuyutsuki's kidnapping, or.... ah.... I can't think of any other time.

Point is: Section 2 is useless and poses almost no presence in the manga or anime (I'm not including Rebuild in my analysis as I have not yet seen it).

Edit: This would make Shinji's flip-out a little more probable; realistic, even, if the Children realizing that unless they could contact Tokyo 3 Police or Misato, they were on their own.

You might have to put Rei somewhere off-stage for that, however.

Can't she manifest her own AT-field if pushed far enough?
Not to mention, depending on where in the series you set this, she might take a bullet outright to protect Shinji.

As for berserk Shinji, berserkers dont generally stop until long AFTER the target is dead. Hed keep at it until he either fell over or someone got through to him.

If hes braining the guy with his pistol, it makes for a rather gory scenario :-D

Depending on how you play it, having the general public realize just HOW fucked in the head ALL of the eva pilots are could make for interesting drama.

I'd like to see how Gendo and the various players would try to keep them from all getting mandatory counseling.

While Section 2 is not shown and your right in that we have no evidence of that scenario...what actually happens and what COULD happen are vastly different things. Just because the armored van to transport the children, the gun toting janitors and the incredible heavy police presence is not NEEDED and therefor not visible does not mean its not there.
Most probably that school is one of the most heavily guarded places on earth with snipers, counter snipers, teh aforementioned janitors, the security guards stationed at 'nearby' buildings, roving police patrols, just general reinforcement etc.

This KIND of reminds me of a old Eva fic I read way back in 2000 or something. It was a fairly mediocre piece but basically it had some bigshot give Asuka a slap for turning him down or something (in her usual blunt manner) and Shinji ended up basically wailing on the guys ass for like 5 minutes before somebody pulled him of (Unbeknown to Shinji the guy died I think). I could actually see something MORE than Shinji just wailing going up to Eva-01 levels brutality if one of the other Pilots was injured, regardless of which one it was.

"Earlier today a local school was the scene of a brutal shhoting spree. Action 6's ow Toshiro Mifune is on the scene interviewing witnessess."

"Man it was insane .Ikari was running around screaming and yelling firing this assault rifle with pure abandon. I think he shot like sixty people before they managed to ice him."

"I know such a tragedy."

"Tell me about it but the poor sod had to reload at times."

Do they have mandatory counseling in Japan? IIRC, the Japanese have a strong cultural disdain for psychotherapy. You're supposed to go to your family and/or friends if you have mental problems, or deal with it yourself, not bother a stranger with them. Actual professionals mostly deal with people who are off the wall batshit insane.

That said, if some form of mandatory counseling were imposed, I see Gendo making sure the pilots got counseled by Ritsuko, or someone else he controlled.

EDIT: How will Asuka treat Shinji differently, after he's brutally killed a guy for her? How would she react, if it was Rei, Hikari, or one of the stooges, who got shot, and set off Berserker Mode (actually, if Touji got shot, I could see it setting off Hikari's Berserker Mode).

On a related note, suppose Shinji got shot, and Asuka went Berserker, or Rei went Pattern Blue, or both?

Pistol? Assault rifle? Bah I say!
Real insane bastards use flame throwers for school shootings.

Sadly It would make for a very short fic.
Still the Idea of a partially burned shinji who still has a few buring patches on him
as he continues to beat on the shooters already mangled corpse would be quite a sight.
Everyone elses reactions would be priceless.

One thing that need to be considered is even through the Pilots are combat veterans later in the series, it is in Eva-to-Angel combat. It is one thing to see 40m tall mecha fighting aliens at a distance (which is all the people on the ground and the Pilots themselves see) and quite another to see a slight 14 year old schoolboy beat another person into a bloody mess. This will certainly change people's image of Shinji, especially Asuka's if she sees it happen. Would she want to continue provoking someone that can go berserk?

If you want an idea for how to get the story rolling, the attacker could be a disaffected admirer of Asuka (as suggested before in this thread) that barges into the classroom with a handgun or a knife (if American high schools have problems with weapons on campus even with metal detectors, imagine a Japanese school with no overt security measures) to cause harm to Asuka. She is not in the classroom when he comes in, but Asuka walks in as he is menacing the class. He turns and shoots/stabs/slices her and a screaming Shinji flips out, causing him to go into a frenzy and beat him down, even while sustaining injuries of his own.

For further WTF, Shinji actually takes two shots, keeps attacking through it, and ends up in the hospital in worse shape than Asuka.

Unless he is shot center head (instant stop) or center heart (up to 15 seconds to take affect), Shinji can cause a lot of damage to an opponent even if wounded if he goes berserk.

NERV and Dr. Akagi is always concerned about cross-contamination between the Pilots and the Evas. What if this is considered proof that some of this, in a small way, had taken place? Would Gendo consider this a postive or a negative, if it results in a more aggressive, effective Pilot?

Hmm, if this happens before the 13th Angel, would Gendo still do what he did in canon? If so, how would this Shinji respond to such a thing?

If not, how would he alter the scenario?

If the guy that shot up the classroom was a suitor Asuka refused particularly hard, who made it clear to her that she was the reason he snapped (even if she was really just one of many factors), how would that effect her behavior?

There is NE student who has a ton of pressure on them, is riddiculed by an associate and has no moral support from his parents and access to a gun.

Shinji Ikari.

It wouldn't take much for him to snap , grab Misatos gun while she is drunk and well.......

That thought makes me want to work on "Shinji the Homicidal Maniac."

this is just my poor attempt at communicating the way I imagine the scene

-------------------------------------

It was at that moment that the door opened and the red headed object of the wakizashi wielding mad manÆs ravings stepped into the room. When said mad man heard the door opening he immediately turned. Shinji saw his opportunity and took it jumping up out of his seat and dashing across the room. The aggressor held his blade in his left hand above his shoulder level where he had been waving it threateningly a moment before and the moment he identified the person at the door as Asuka, the one whoÆs humiliating public refusal of his affections had caused so much suffering in his life he struck, lashing out towards her head.

Seeing the blade coming and knowing that she had nothing to block it with Asuka quickly reversed her momentum and stepped backwards but they were too close and the extra reach of the short sword to great for her to over come. Blood was flung to the white tile from the tip of the blade as it completed its downward arc having succeeded in cutting through the skin into the muscle of his victimÆs lower shoulder.

Just as the blood marred the pale surface of the floor Shinji interposed himself between the now hunched over attacker and his now injured fellow pilot. Shinji swiftly delivered a punch to the solar plexus of the deranged individual forcing him back a step and knocking the wind out of him. Shinji then took hold of the hand holding the wakizashi and the forearm above it, he brought wrist of the hand holding the short sword down with all the strength in his arms while also bringing his right knee up into the wrist at such and angle as to cause it to break with an audible popping. The man cried out with pain and the blade fell from his hands to the ground. Shinji kicked the ancient weapon between the mans legs across the room toward the wall facing the exterior before instinctively stepping left.

A dainty fist struck out with tremendous speed and precision making contact with the mad manÆs jaw noisily breaking it and eliciting another shout of pain. AsukaÆs left shoulder may have been injured but her injured greatly reducing its usefulness but her dominant right arm was fully functional, her legs for that matter too. She brought her heel up in a lighting fast crescent kick aimed for his temple connecting with lethal brain bruising force at precisely the same moment that ShinjiÆs blurring elbow struck the opposite temple with equal force dealing their enemy double mortal wounds.

Meanwhile Rei had picked up the short sword as it crossed the room and made a swift chop the moment the now dead manÆs body began to fall. Steel passed through flesh in a sixth of a second cleanly removing the head from the body in application of one of the fundamental principles of angel killing, Overkill. The corpse and body fell together and came to rest in separately in their own swiftly growing pools of blood under the alternating feverishly angry, furiously determined, and ice cold glares of its killers.

Shinji and Rei watched quietly for a moment while Asuka kicked the head into the wall where it bounced behind the teacherÆs desk causing him to run to the window and vomit before she moved onto give the body a similar treatment, panting disproportionately to her exertion. Shinji remembering AsukaÆs wound removed his shirt and applied it to her cut and began to pull her towards her desk while speaking gently to her. Rei wiped the blade on the dead mans shirt before sheathing it and returning to her desk.

As they moved away from the body the class who had until now been in a state of shocked silence immediately freaked. Many began to shriek while other imitated their teacher running towards the windows some making it some not, this was the scene upon the arrival of Section Two.

 Random-ass overkill, and I doubt Shinji would know to do things like kicking away the 'mad man's weapon. Somewhat difficult to read and follow.

whats wrong with a little overkill? It was mostly that idea of overkill that made me want to write the scene. also how did you find it hard to understand, I've only recently begun to put effort into developing some kind of skill in creative writing and was somewhat hoping for some constructive critism

A few things to mull over regarding:
Weapons-
1) A knife can be a threatening tool or a show of skill, depending upon the wielder; and while intimidating on a personal (one-on-one) level, in front of a classroom it's a little scary but not enough to keep everyone there. Kicking a knife away also is highly difficult unless you have training and skill to do so, as striking a the hand or arm of a knife-wielder using a kick is hard to do at times even with the element of surprise. A scorned admirer might be be desperate for attention but is a knife the only thing he would be able to lay his hands on?
2) A gun is effective for containing a group of people with minimal effort and a highly intimidating to use when confronting an individual or group. A person desperate for attention will use a weapon that demands respect and fear, although it is uncommon for them to use it efficiently when in an excited (excitable?) state of emotions and not acting rationally. This makes them more dangerous when confronted by someone or feeling threatened by a turn of events, possibly leading to them lashing out and potentially shooting the gun (maybe not directly at someone, but pointing a gun upwards or outside doesn't mean someone won't get hurt). Asuka further spurning the twisted admirer, the nutcase waving the gun around threatening her, and Shinji reacting to this behavior with an attack of his own could be a situation in which the gun could go off at an inappropriate time.

The Pilots-
3) Asuka has experience when fighting. She shows this in her actions in the manga at the arcade while beating up thugs utilizing martial arts, and in the anime when in battle with the Angels, showing she has familiarity with weapons use.
4) Shinji would take damage from someone with a knife because it so easy to randomly lash out and slash at something, that even in a berserker state he could take a fatal amount of damage before knocking the other guy out. A gun requires proper handling to be effective, and even if Shinji is shot in an extremity (arm or calf) or non-vital area (shoulder, thigh, etc.), he could still keep going and wrest the gun from the maniac's grip or knock them down into a position where he could take a dominant position (straddling the attacker and following up with continuous strikes).
5) How would Rei respond to an attack upon Shinji? At which point in the series does this occur? This could play a role in Rei's severity of action, or complete lack thereof. Maybe even change her perception of Asuka (for the worse) and Shinji (for the... better? maybe?).

In regards to the enumerated reasons that a gun would be a superior weapon I totally agree. I choose knife due to matters of avalibilty and if somebody comes in with a knife looking to kill one of their class mates the group isn't going to be as easily controlled as if he was holding a gun on them but at the same time no one is going to run up and tackle him because he could probably knife them just like you said shinji probably would be. also the weapon is a single edge and fair sized hand gaurd and handle so long as he din't make the mistake of kicking the sharp side I have hard time seeing kicking it away as difficult. I will agree that the skill with which shinji deals with it is the weakest part of what plot there is to this though.
