I'ma huge fan of Firefly and Serentiy, and I recently bought a copy of the Serenity RPG. I just wanted to see if there were any oher Browncoats on TFF, and if they would be interested in playing.

So, anyone? Or will those gorram Alliance bastards crush my dreams?

How would you play it?

I'd assume one would start by getting their hand's on the book. :huh.:

I'm interested in playing, but I'll steer clear of the purple bellies, I have no desire to wind up in some accademy somewhere.

Also, I refuse to GM.

We would probably run the game here on the forum, with the GM posting what's happening in the story, and the other players posting their actions.

For combat, we'd probably use an IM, unless we have difficulty getting everyone on at the same time, in which case we'd stick to

The GM would do all the dice rolling, since I forsee a statistical anomaly in the future if we get to roll our own.

And yes, buying a copy of the book would probably be a good first step.

Regarding GM, I suppose I COULD do it, though I'd prefer someone else to give it a try.

So since some people have expressed interest, we need to answer two questions.

Who's willing to GM?

And more importantly...

Who gets to be captain? :D

Unless someone else steps up, I'll GM, so you don't need to worry about it.

I guess I could do some GMing... but I don't have the rules.

In terms of engine, is it some d20 madness?

Nope. ^_^

It's got some similarities to the D20 system from DnD, etc. But it's also got a significant number of glaring differences.

This wiki article on the game has a few basics from the Cortex system it uses.

Edit: Also, do you feel comfortable using modified western dialect and bits of mangled Chinese?

Cause thats a requirement.

Hmm... after a quick look-over of this "Cortex System," it sounds kinda like the Alternity scifi game....

I'd have to brush up on the dialogue bits, it's been a while since I've watched Firefly.

So I guess the problem for me is mostly getting ahold of the rule book.

So, we've got 3-4 people willing to give this a try, which means 1 GM and a crew of 2-3 people.

I suppose we could pull that off, especially if the GM is willing to pick up some slack and add an NPC crew member or two...

So, shall we get started with character creation, or wait a bit longer for others to join in?

Okay, I guess I'm the GM.

So I think I'll say yeah, everybody go ahead, let's start posting characters.

What about the ship? It's like the most important NPC in a way... do the players want to reach a consensus on the ship or what?

Information:
Name: Arek Vash Nolak
Age: 26
Gender: Male

Arek has been wandering the worlds since before he could remember. His parents owned a small transport ship, and made a decent living off of it. As he grew up, he learned a lot of the skills necessary for his family's line of work.

In all likelihood, Arek would have continued this linbe of work, except for one small incident. While dropping some supplies off on a Rim World, Reavers attacked. While Arek managed to survive the attack, his parents and some of the crew were killed, along with most of the settlement. After that, the surviving crew sort of drifted apart, eventually selling off the ship and going their separate ways.

Once on his on, Arek decided to go mercenary, and spent hsi time drifting from job to job. That finally enede when he met up with his current crew, where several unique events reforged the broken bonds of family, and he decided to join them on a permanent basis.

Deadly Enemy: Once, Arek encountered a bounty hunter who managed to defeat and capture him. However, she neglected to perform a thorough search, and missed one of the Flashbangs attached to his clohes. When Arek regained consciousness, he detonated, it, knocked her unconscious, and left her on a desolate rock, taking her ship.

And her clothes.

And some kinky pictures for blackmail. :snigger:

Ever since them, she's kept an eye and ear out for information regarding Arek. Whenever she tracks him down, it generally devolves into a shouting/shooting match, with her screaming death threats, and him hitting on her.

History: Jacen was born on Lilac, a small farming moon plagued by heat, lack of water, and being far to close to Reaver space. At a young age, he learned that staying in any one community too long was a good way to get left as a distraction when the Reavers inevitably raided, so he stole, scrounged and begged his way from one settlement to another.

Eventually, people started paying him for odd jobs, anything from scouting new land to tracking down outlaws to killing troublesome folk. The drifter had a job.

The war rolled around to Lilac, and Jacen signed up with the Independants at the age of 19 to get off-world. He served without any real distinction until he was assigned to Herra, two years after he volunteered, and shortly before the war ended at Serenity Valley.

After a year in an Alliance sponsored ôReintegration Campö Jacen was returned to Lilac, and returned to his life of drifting between settlements, trying to avoid the Reavers.

Three years later, he bargained passage off-world with a Tramp Liner owned by an old squad mate in return for service as a guard and reserve Pilot.

Jacen started drifting around the Verse, taking jobs as they come, leasing his Mule in exchange for its storage, leasing himself for room, board, passage, and a small cut.

He saves a-lot.

I'm pretty sure you should have military rank as one of your assest, given your bckground.

And quick question: What exactly are the penalties for off handed? I never ould find that in the book...

good point, I'll add that along with a complication.

I'll also have to clarify the backstory.

Come to think of it, I should have "Friends in low places" too, damn.

As to the penalties, I just assumed it was a -1 or -2 step dice penalty. :huh.:

As far as a ship goes, That realy depends on how many people sign up, and whether the GM want's to chip in a crew NPC or two.

If it's just me and Zero, then the Wren class would probably be acceptable.

otherwise, we'll need something bigger.

Come to think of it, we'll also need a mechanic of some sort. and a medic with more than d2 would be a good idea.

on the other hand, It is kinda hard to make a character that can stand up in a scuffle and still take care of the rest of tha crew.

You probably don't need Friends in Low Places, since that implies you have extensive connections with people on the underbelly of the Verse. You can generally spend Plot points to get those sort of things.

I guess the off hand penalty is up to the GM, depending on the circumstances.

As for a mechanic/medic, I can probably draft up an NPC to do both, assuming we don't get at least a third person to play.

Still, I think we should draft up an original ship. A Wren would work, but someone would need to change their setup so we don't explode. An original ship would give us some leeway with what we'll have ready.

Plus, I'd like something a little bit faster.

Oh, and happy birthday.

A bit faster, maybe a speed class of five, with a seven for Hard Burn?

The complexity should be kept low, to save on matenance costs.

30/6=5 so...

Agility d6 average.

Strength d6 mid bulk transport tonnage range

Vitality d8 needs little matenance

Alertness d2 rudimentary electronics suite

Intelegence d4 mundane autopilot

Wllpower d2 no backup systems

Total complexity 30, low.

Dimensions:
Length: 150ft
Beam: 50ft
Height: 30ft

Tonnage: 1350 tons

Profile: Bulky

Fuel capacity: 60 tons, tank volume 300tons

Cargo pasenger and crew space alotments depending on size of crew.

yearly matanence costs: 1620 credits

As an example for a base template for the ship?

Or we could make one completely different. :huh.:

Okay, so it looks like we've got two players for sure... IM and 0hr, with two others that posted once.

I think we need to talk a little bit about what kind of campaign we want to run here. "Arek and Jacen" would probably be more of a buddy-cop movie than anything else I can think of.

Executive Decision: Jacen's old squad-mate that got mentioned is named Jerry, short for Jeremiah. He's the boat's owner/plot railroads if nothing better gets thought up.

If it's more about what Arek and Jacen get up to, rather than a story revolving around the crew of a ship, it would be easier to have a host of "background" NPCs, secondary members that do things like fly the ship and maintain the engine and choose the jobs.

I've got a plot kernal involving a runaway Core doctor that's out of his depth (psycho sister? Prolly not!); it would work best if it was set post-BDM.

Actually, I think that's an excellent jumping-off point: Where were you during the climax scene of the Big Damn Movie, when Mal broadcast the truth about the planet Miranda to the Verse?

Bio: Elena was a bright young doctor who dreamed of helping others. She realized that dream when she signed on to a humanitarian effort to wander the Rim offering free medical treatment to people who needed it. For a few months this was the life she lead until they landed on the wrong planet. Her expedition was attacked by a raiding party, who stole as much as they could, and sod the survivors into slavery.

Fortunately, the ship she was captive on was also carrying some valuable cargo, which a certain duo thought should be "liberated." Somehow, she ended up on their ship, and she's been working there ever since.

Elena is an amazingly shy person, having spent her life reading books and helping her father fix small scale ships. Never having developed a social life, she will blush and mumble when engaged in conversation for any length of time. The only exception to this is when she's working, be it on the ship or a patient. Her voice is filled, with a strong, professional tone, and she can bark orders as well as the toughest drill sergeant.

If you have any changes you want made, let me know.

So since aperently My old squadmate is the owner/captain, what skillset should he have.

I'd assume better Piloting skilz than my character, since the only reason Jacen learned it at all was as a backup since Browncoats tended to need a wide array of things to do.

And he at least has friends in low places, somewhat like the illustrius Srgt. Reynolds.

So what other skilz and complications should he have? If we asssume he was...less than exemplary as a soldier, sorta like that looser from Mal and Zoe's platoon, whatzizname, then we can trick him out as the "Diplomatic" character, wheeling and dealing, but ducking down when the guns come out?

If this meets with aproval, I'll work up a sheet.
