So here's the thread for all my Unknown Soldier snippets...gotta get all my snippets together first. Haven't edited the snippets for continuity, so it'll be confusing at times. Don't worry...when/if I write a full story for this idea, it'll all be sorted out. And Shirou will have a different chant for UBW in this story, reflecting how Archer helps him to understand how to open it. Wow...looking at it like this, half these snippets are obsolete :p

Servant Class: Archer
True Name: Unknown Soldier
Master: Emiya Shirou
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Height: 2m 12cm
Weight: 90 kg

Strength: C
Agility: C
Mana: D
Luck: EX
Endurance: B

An unusual servant. He does not represent any particular hero. Instead, he represents the collected deeds of all fallen soldiers whose remains were unidentified or never found. As such, his nature is far more nebulous then that of other Servants, leading to great difficulty in identifying him. Due to his human origins, he is weaker then most other servants. However, that does not mean he is any less of a threat. Indeed, with millions of lifetimes to draw upon, his mind can be said to be the most dangerous of any servant's.

Skills:

Independent Action: EX
Eye of the Mind (fake): B
Presence Concealment: B
Riding: C
Military Tactics: A

Noble Phantasms:

Unknown Heroes: The Man with a Million Faces
Support, Rank C
Unknown Soldier can create 'empty' bodies of himself at will that he can 'switch' his spirit to. A body that he has left, or is otherwise 'empty', is no different in appearance to a dead body. All wounds are left behind with the body.

The Art of War: Thousand Paths to Victory
Support, Rank C
As Unknown Soldier is drawn from all unknown war dead, he has access to all their skills. However, those skills that he uses more frequently will, as a matter of course, become more powerful, while those he neglects will become less so. His most often used skill in that Grail War has the potential to reach B-rank Noble Phantasm power levels.

Killing Field: Indiscriminate Death
Anti-Army, Rank B
War, as a matter of course, is hellish. Unknown Soldier has mastered that hell. He can summon the carnage of any battle and place his target into its middle. At that point, the target has become the enemy of both sides, and is subjected to the full force of what the Unknown Soldier faced in life.

Shirou dove into the the shed, cursing the insane man in blue who was trying to kabob him with a spear. He grunted, digging through the shed for his grandfather's old relic. "Come on, come on, come fucking on!"

"Sorry buddy, nothing personal. I've been ordered to do this, see?"

As Lancer's Gae Bolg came down on Shirou, he rolled to the side, screaming "the hell with you!", and came up with an ancient rifle in his hands. The Arisaka Type 99 rifle that had been the only thing recovered from the massive fire that had destroyed his family. For ten years he had worked his strengthening magic on it. To no avail. The bullet that could kill at a thousand meters simply bounced off Lancer's chest.

"Heh. Not a bad show of magic, for a boy, I'll admit. Would have killed most other magi you could meet. Too bad for you I'm a Servant." And Lancer stabbed.

"Guh!" Shirou had rolled to the side again, barely escaping Lancer's strike, but still leaving a trail of blood on the floor where he had been.

"Game over, boy." As Lancer raised his spear and Shirou prepared to die, a bright flash of light blinded them both. When Shirou's eyes recovered, he couldn't believe what he saw. A large man, taller then Lancer and heavily muscled, was blocking Lancer's spear with a simple, if long, knife. "Keh, so you do have talent, boy. Who are you, though? I don't recognize you." The last comments were obviously directed at the newcomer.

"Who am I?" The stranger seemed to ponder. "I don't know either. I'm everyone I am."

"What the hell kind of answer is that?" Lancer growled.

"That's the answer you're getting. Just be content knowing that I am Archer."

"Archer, hmm? Well, that would be all seven. I'll be taking my leave of you, then." Lancer bounded backwards, first into the courtyard, then over the wall.

Now that Shirou no longer had a maniac waving a spear in his face, he could study the newcomer in greater detail. He wasn't as muscled as he had thought, a fair bit of the bulk due to his loose clothing. He wore a helmet, loose shirt and pants both with plenty of pockets, and leather boots, as well as a broad belt around his waist that he had various pouches and tools strapped on to.

"Decent rifle, kid."

"Huh?"

"Arisaka Type 99? I remember being on both ends of that one. Kicked like a mule, but damn, the thing hurt if you got hit by it. Still not as bad as a Mauser 98, though. Those things really put you on your ass."

"Wh-wh-what are you talking about? And who the hell are you?"

"Heh, my apologies, kid. Servant Archer reporting, as by your command."

"Ar...cher? Like Lancer, that maniac who tried to kill me?"

"Indeed. I, as he, and five others, are Servants. We are Heroic Spirits summoned from the history of humanity to fight for our Masters. You are my Master."

"Heroic Spirits? Huh?"

Archer sighed. "Heroic Spirits. Pretty self-explanatory term. Spirits who were heroes in a previous life."

"Heroes, huh? Which one were you?"

"Heh, that's a hard question to answer."

"What do you mean?"

"Well, Master, what do you think someone who was hit by an artillery shell would look like?"

"What do you mean? They would be dead."

"Yes, I know they would be dead, that's rather certain. What do you think his body would look like, though?"

"You wouldn't be able to recognize it."

"Exactly. How many men do you think have died like that in wars?"

"Lots. Lots and lots."

"Exactly."

"Are you one of them? Is that why you don't know your identity?"

"Heh...close, but no cigar. How would I have been chosen? At random? Doesn't work that way, kid."

"So who...?"

"I'm every one of them, and all of them. In the hearts of those still grieving, I am their loved one, no matter who they may be. I am the manifestation of the heroic deeds of every one of these fallen."

"You're all of them?"

"Indeed. Servant Archer, the Unknown Soldier, at your service...sir."
Archer's summoning.

Shirou sprinted down the stairs as if the hounds of hell were after him. "Damn it, damn it, damn it all," he chanted. He and Archer both thought they'd planned everything out perfectly. "Guess not," he thought, "who's that guy Archer keeps talking about, Murphy or whatever?"

They'd had it set up perfectly. Archer would use his Stranger's Face noble phantasm to create a dead body, he would take it to the temple for the monks to pray over, then at night he would sneak back in and Archer would switch to the body inside the temple, bypassing the wards on it. Should Shirou have encountered Assassin, he would have eliminated him using Unlimited Blade Works.

"Still puzzling, how he's supposed to be me. I mean, sure, I'm a mage, but I'm hardly a powerful one. Tohsaka said that a Reality Marble is the highest class of magecraft one can achieve, which I guess makes sense, but how could I possibly have a Reality Marble if I can barely use normal magic?" Shirou shook his head. "Can't think about that right now, I'll have to ask Rin when I get back." A massive explosion to his left threw stone shards across his face. "Right. IF I get back."

"What's wrong, mongrel? Too afraid to fight? Well, I suppose that a mere human like you has no chance against me anyways, so that's not a big surprise."

Shirou just ran harder. "Even if Archer's body right now was destroyed, he'll have switched to the body he left back at my house. Damn it, I just need to get back, then I'll have Archer as well as Rin and her servant to fight this bastard! Even Berserker couldn't beat all four of us, there's no way this joker can!"

As he ducked into a side alley, Shirou mentally calculated the distance from his house to where he was now. "Damn it. I'm not going to be able to get back before this pigdog turns me into Swiss cheese. No choice." Shirou raised his arm, concentrated his power towards the three markings on the back of his hand, and called out in his mind, "Archer! Come!"

A flash of light, and there he was, a cigarette dangling from his mouth and a bayonet in his hand. "Archer, front and center. Needed me?"

As Shirou quickly explained the situation to him, the smirk on Archer's face grew. "No sweat, kid. From the sound of it, that guy's got nothing but muscles between the ears. Remember how we took down Berserker and Rider? Well, I've told you about my noble phantasm Killing Field, right? Well..."

***********************

Gilgamesh scowled as he strolled down the street. A beggar, thinking that he had to be Yakuza, fled before he even got halfway down the street. A group of Yakuza, thinking to challenge him, took one look at his face and ran for their lives. Of course, he didn't see any of this. And why should he? He was Gilgamesh, King of Kings, and these lowly beings were unfit to even be his subjects. All he wanted tonight was to find that particularly annoying little vermin whose equally annoying and weak Servant he had already eliminated, and kill him. He sighed. He REALLY needed a bath. He felt dirty just being near these fools.

Preoccupied, he failed to notice the three silver cylinders tumbling into the alley he had wandered into. His first warning was the thick choking gas that suddenly filled his vision.

He felt disgusted. Were these the tricks that the once-mighty mages had fallen to? This wouldn't even be fun. His ears, strained to catch the crunch of a footfall or the whistle of a blade through air, heard a whisper from behind him.

" -for one's arrival. My whole life was - Unlimited Blade Works."

Then, all the King of Kings knew was the whistling through air of countless blades, so reminiscent of his own Gate of Babylon. As a pair of spears, one yellow and one red, flew past his face, he scowled. He now knew the opponent he faced. The last one to wield those weapons had been in the previous War he participated in, and he knew that he had not been summoned again. "Faker." He growled in hate. So this upstart wanted to match him blade for blade? Fine. No copy could beat its original.

As he flung a brace of swords at where he thought his enemy to be, he noticed the ground underneath his feet changing. "Again?" he snarled. More mage's tricks. The repeated metallic click-clack sound from behind him, however, did draw his attention. As did the sudden burst of pain on his back. "Gahh!" he grunted. Whatever the attack was, it was strong. For a human, at least. The mere fact that it could wound a Servant such as him meant that it must have had some magical power. Whoever that mongrel was, he had some skill if he could get past the King of Kings in such a narrow path. No matter. Gilgamesh waved again, summoning over twenty noble phantasms this time. No matter how good this human was, he could not win against the power of twenty Servants.

And so, Gilgamesh was taken completely by surprise as the exact same Servant he had killed in the temple came bounding out at him from within the smoke. However, his surprise was even greater when a red spear exploded out from his chest.
Shirou/Archer vs Gilgamesh.

Shirou hummed as he chopped some bell peppers and beef to stir-fry. Sakura had wanted to cook, and it had taken him, Archer, and Rider to convince her to lie down and rest, after their battle with Lancer. The only thing that had saved her from Gae Bolg was her incredible luck to be standing directly in front of one of Archer's Unknown Heroes. The presence of Archer and his machine gun had forced Lancer to go through him first, giving Rider enough time to stampede over him with Bellerophon.

As the rice cooker beeped, Shirou heard a characteristic deep voice, quite tipsy, belting out a foreign song Shirou couldn't understand. He guessed that it was from one of Archer's old wars, and smiled. Looked like his Servant had recovered from Lancer's stab. Of course, knowing him, he just as easily could have gone drinking anyways. Shirou shook his head, and poured some tea, checking over the congee he was going to give Sakura after he had finished serving up food for Archer and Rider.

The door slammed, and Shirou's jaw dropped. The large bottle of foreign liquor in Archer's hand wasn't unusual, but the handful of Rider in his other hand definitely was. Both of them were blushing, though he couldn't tell if Rider's blush was from embarrassment, anger, alcohol, or a combination thereof. His jaw dropped even further moments later, when Archer, while continuing to bawl out his song, produced a white-furred flower with yellow heads and pinned it into Rider's blindfold. And promptly collapsed.

Shirou groaned. "Rider, the food's in the kitchen, you just need to plate it and get it on the table. I'll get Archer into his futon then bring Sakura her dinner, alright?" As usual, she stayed silent, simply nodding. At least Archer had all his equipment off, Shirou thought. Even without the extra weight, he still had a hard time dragging Archer to his bedroom. He hoped that Sakura would be alright for another few minutes.
After second vs Lancer battle.

Shirou sprinted through the temple grounds, scattering flowers and holy idols left and right. He felt like he was somehow desecrating holy ground, and fought a slight urge to pray. His next feeling was a scratch in his shirt from Assassin's sword, and he decided that he would desecrate the temple some more. As those crazy American boys with leather jackets and long greasy hair in that movie would say, he booked it. Archer had Caster and her army trapped in his Killing Field, and Rider and Sakura were busy against Kuzuki...not that Sakura was probably doing much, still recovering from a spear in her stomach and all.

The temple wall loomed up ahead of him, and Shirou turned, facing Assassin. The man approached him, his sword held loosely. "There is no place to run, young Master. Surrender your Command Mantra and leave, or this one must take your life."

Shirou scowled, and reached deep inside himself. He remembered Archer's lessons. Breathe deeply. Calm the mind, steady the hand. The only things that exist are you and your target. Trace, on. He knew that he wouldn't have time to complete his process, so he made some. "You know, one tough old man who my Servant once told me about," Determining purpose of creation. "he was a General. He led millions of men to countless victories." Analyzing and reproducing base material. "This great man once said something." Reinforcing. "He said to his men," Hypothesis complete. Loading projections. "To those that fall I say, you will not die, but step into immortality." All projections loaded. Stand by. "As the Master of a Servant who once fought and died with him, how can I betray that ideal? Trace, off. "And thus, I shall fight, and I shall win, not for a wish, but for an ideal." All projections, fully automatic fire. A barrage of daggers flew towards Assassin, as a military saber dropped into Shirou's outstretched hand. "This is why I fight. This is why you die."
Final battle, Shirou vs False Assassin.

Will add more later.

Update! (BTW, I'm using the Saber!Hercules, Assassin!EMIYA, and Rin as Berserker's Master version)

VS Saber, Part 1:

'Bad day. Bad day. VERY bad day.'

Shirou cursed his bad luck as he dodged yet another blow from Saber. The hulking grey man had charged after him with unbelievable speed for a Servant so big. 'Then again, Servants and magic are unbelievable enough...so I guess it's expected at this point' he mused, trying his best to stay alive.

"Nii-chan, where arrrrrree you?" came the call of the young girl who was this monster's Master, and Shirou shuddered again. The memories of what Tohsaka had looked like when he and Sakura found her were still fresh in his mind. He briefly cursed himself for leaving Sakura and Rider behind, but almost immediately felt bad for wanting to leave Tohsaka behind.

'It's like Archer said, we don't leave a man behind. Or a woman, in her case. Speaking of Archer...'

As if on cue, one of the dead bodies on the ground exploded into motion, charging forward in a blur against Saber, both hands spewing fire. Saber reeled from the barrage of lead, and Shirou saw his opening. Trace, on. Projection complete and loaded. Two knives flew from his hands unerringly towards Berserker, and a second later, they both struck his throat, a sure kill.

Two pieces of steel clattered on the mansion's floor, and Shirou looked at the bent knives lying on the ground in disbelief. "I have given you my identity, young mage. Were you dishonoring me by not listening, or are mages just not as good now? I am Herakles, son of Zeus, hero of the Twelve Labours, and for each Labour I have been granted a life. Kill me once, and I will never die the same way again" the gray mountain of a man rumbled, and Shirou shuddered. Just what sort of a Servant was this monster?

"MOVE!" And Shirou spun to the right, almost on instinct, as an enormous crash next to him told him of the sword that would have cut him in half. As Shirou turned, he saw Archer on the ground, an arm nearly severed by Saber's attack.

"Surrender your Command Mantra now, young mage, and you will live. I do not enjoy killing the defenseless, but should you intend to continue fighting, I must honor your decision." Saber growled.

Saber!Herakles?... They are doomed. So freaking doomed. Herakles is one of the greatest heroes of all time for a reason.

That said, it is good to see a sane Heracles actually acting like the relatively nice guy he was. He deserves more then just being Berserker over and over again. I'd like to see him take on the Grim Reaper again. And beat the shit out of it again too.

Archer has one hell of a fight ahead of him.

...

Wait... Who's Berserker?

Questions and maybe a suggestion..

First off, just what roles/jobs do the unknown fallen fit into for the Unknown Soldier? Is it just ground infantry? What about snipers? Generals? Armored vehicles and crews? Aircraft?

Because if he has access to the brain power and understanding of someone like Patton or another lesser known but able general, and access to the full range of military fighting men.. It'd be pretty easy to wear down pretty much any other Servant with a combo of Arty, Tanks, and Air Support.. And, dare I say it.. Naval Gunfire?

Following that, how far back does he have access to? WWII is obvious. WWI? Korean War? The mongels and Khan? Earlier? How far *forward* does he have access to? Spec Ops training and tactics are *far* ahead of the tactics that most of the other Servants know. Considering Hercules is one of the other servants, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to go all the way back to the first war/battle.

I can imagine it being pretty traumitizing for the other servants if, once the Unknown Soldier learns their true names, him making them relive their own campaigns. From both sides.

Also, there's a suggestion for an ability that came to mind..

The Fog of War.
A combination of psychological warfare and sensory overload. Maybe represented by an actual fog bank (though, eh, for some reason this seems a bit cliche to me, dunno), in which the victim's senses seem detached, as if in a sensory deprevation chamber. And then, suddenly, the victim begins seeing the faces of all his fallen fellows form in the fog, the sounds of the battles they died in echoing and changing with each face revealed, until they mix together into a deafening roar.

For some of the Servants, I can see this being a pretty damn bad day. Most of the Servants came from time periods where they and the men they lead into battle had a closer relationship than the military does now. To some degree, they tended to know at least a few of the men by name down to the lowest ranks. Not *all* of them, mind you, but a few here and there.

Hopefully there's at least one or two things that can inspire something there for ya.

Berserker...will be revealed when he appears. And yes, Herakles as Saber is a Servant that nobody wants to fight. He's probably more powerful then Arthuria, and she took down Gilgamesh.

Unknown Soldier represents every single soldier who died on the field of battle who could not be identified. So yes, a modern soldier whose body was never found could, conceivably, be integrated into Unknown Soldier, but modern DNA testing, dental records, and combat IDs make it very difficult. He primarily draws from the bloodiest wars of human history, so the World Wars, the Taiping and An Shi rebellions, the Mongol conquests, Napoleonic Wars, Russian Civil War...basically, this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_...armed_conflicts

And about the various weapons and forcing Servants to relive their own battles...what do you think Killing Field is all about? ;) Of course, you may not WANT Berserker, for example, reliving some of his battles...

Working on VS Saber part 2...it amply demonstrates why it's a bad idea for a mortal to fight Hercules.

You'd be surprised, actually. The list of MIAs from Vietnam on isn't short enough to ignore. Logically, most of those are assumed KIA. Those would be lost/unknown soldiers wouldn't they?

Not to mention there has been more than a few failed missions that weren't acknowledged as existing through out the world. The soldiers who take part in those types of missions are insanely well trained and capable.

Suddenly I have this hilarious image of all servants minus the Soldier running around yelling " WHERE THE HELL IS ALL THIS ARTILLERY COMING FROM!?" as explosions... explode around them with Soldier laughing maniacally on a cliff or balcony somewhere...

Hmm...any drawfags want to put up some pictures of what Unknown Soldier might look like?

Since the Unknown Soldier is an amalgam of dead unknown soldiers, what about adding dead Delta Green agents who died as soldiers here. All them are experienced in fighting the alien paranormal horrors like Mythos horrors and some of them probably have a few Mythos spells up their sleeve in case things get too hot.

I was kind of wanting to keep this kind of linked to real life, considering how all Heroic Spirits, technically, were real heroes... :p

We aren't soldiers. Not since Operation Obsidian.

I, understand, Firestorm. How much damage can Berserker take before resorting to his God Hand Noble Phantasm, since one strategy with WWII tech weapons is to lure him into an ambush with emplaced Flak 88s and blow him to Hades.

Didn't Delta Green combat the Karotechia undercover as soldiers during WWII? And if I'm not mistaken some of Delta Green's members were soldiers in Vietnam.

Which is why I edited in "Not since Operation Obsidian." in my post.

Which was the fuck up in Cambodia, in 69.

Early DG efforts didn't use the occult much. Mostly relied on brute force and American relative technological "superiority" over most Mythos Horrors they could tackle to win the day. Cambodia proved that it wasn't enough and provided the argument the Majestic Steering Committee to convince the Joint Chiefs of Staff to kill the officially sanctioned DG.

Even P-Divison of the Office of Naval Intelligence, the WW2 predecessor

EDIT: Bad Internet connection killed the rest of my reply. :blue:

I took 10 minutes to write it out, too.

I'll point out that R'lyeh exists in the Nasuverse in some form; it's where the text of Prelati's Spellbook comes from. Well, unless the Cthulhu mythos stories retroactively created it, anyway.

I doubt the Mage's Association was too pleased once Delta Green started using the occult knowledge they'd acquired, though.

As for the Unknown Soldier, I'd say every single anonymous soldier in the history of warfare. From the cavemen who died fighting over deer, to the spear-carriers in King Arthur's armies, to the assorted men and women dying in Iraq even as the Holy Grail War is fought in Fuyuki City.

I'd worry more about Stephen Alzis and the Fate if I were them, not to mention the Karotechia since they all don't have any scruples about using Mythos magic. Considering that Karotechia sorcerers once tried to destroy the world by summoning Azathoth permanenly with Aktion G÷tterdõmmerung and how cults dedicated to the Crawling Chaos tried to bring the end of the world in the past.

If any DG agent was summoned, you can bet that an "8th Master" would soon appear in the form of Stephen Alzis. He actually enjoys toying with Delta Green for whatever reason. We refer to him as "PARIAH."

On Occult knowledge used by DG, which was part of the post eaten by the bad internet connection, A-Cell and Agent Alphonse always restricted use and knowledge of such things, actively telling agents to leave that stuff alone. Only select agents, the most trusted and stable ones, were given the occult know-how to actually cast spells. Mind, this was during the "Cowboy years" between 1970 and 1990, when most DG agents were the old vets that knew Alphonse was one of the best and most experienced, and thus followed his orders. Even then, the less structured organization of DG should have enabled more to use spells without A-Cell knowing, but most agents simply refused to do so without orders or authorization from A-Cell itself, not trusting the fickle magics of the Mythos.

Ironically, the "Conspiracy years", 1994 to today, have seen a rise in the use of occult knowledge and spells amongst DG cells, often against A-Cell's order or without their knowledge altogether, as well as a dramatic rise in DG casualties due to magic related "accidents". A-Cell's policy remains that Mythos spells should be used sparingly, and only when all other methods have failed.

Compare him to Jason. Herakles is a nice guy for his time, when he's not berserk.

So, VS Saber, part 2.

"Surrender your Command Mantra now, young mage, and you will live. I do not enjoy killing the defenseless, but should you intend to continue fighting, I must honor your decision." Saber growled.

Shirou stood in shock. Archer was defeated. Sakura and Rider were gone. This monster was pointing a sword longer then he was tall into his face.

"Young mage. Your decision?" Saber asked once more, in his gravelly voice.

Shirou ran. He sprinted through the mansion as fast as his legs could carry him. All he saw were the blur of lights that lined the walls and the red of the carpet beneath him. All he felt were the burning in his legs and the thumping in his heart.

"It is useless to run! A mage is strongest on home ground...and this is my Master's mansion!" Shirou heard the now-familiar roar from behind him. He ran harder. He felt the desperation running through his veins. All he could think of was to reach the Church.

As Shirou broke through yet another door, his blood froze. He was back where he started. The destroyed staircase was to his left, the pile of debris was to his right, and Archer's body...was in front of him.

A growl came from behind him. "So, you see now."

But Shirou did not hear him. Archer's eyes burned into his own. He saw Archer's lips faintly move. He could think of nothing more important then Archer's words. He could only listen, and watch his fate play out before his eyes. "Shirou...your soul..."

"My Master's powers over her Workshop"

"...the battle within it..."

"are endless."

"...is endless."

Time stopped for Shirou. Unbidden, images of clanging steel and crashing armies came to his mind. The battle was forgotten. Sakura and Rider were forgotten. Tohsaka was forgotten. The Grail was forgotten. Even the two Heroes were forgotten. Their voices went unheard, drowned out by the voice resonating within his own soul.

"Surrender your fight now" I am the bone of my sword.

"Your fight..." Steel is my body and Fire is my blood.

An infinite blood-red sky, dominated by enormous swords, loomed over Shirou's mindscape.

"or you face an eternity of suffering at my Master's hands." I am the hero of a thousand battles.

"...is not against a Master...it is the fight..." Not known to fall,

"Surrender yourself." Yet never fully alive.

"...to never surrender to yourself." My only true battle is the one against my own weaknesses.

"This eternal war is...UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS!"

And the sky burned.

Another variation of Unlimited Blade Works, shaped by Shirou's interactions with Archer.

Nice, even if slightly short, incantation. But the length doesn't matter, does it? It's about it representing WHO you are.

I doubt Unlimited Blade Works can even stop Saber!Hercules considering that it did not even kill Berserker!Hercules . Can we get some Stast for Saber!Hercules please? I wonder if Hercules would have Eye of the Mind (true) considering that he do not a Beserker now
