There are the generic aspects that befall any crossover: plot, power levels, antagonists, "If you give Bilbo a light saber, you have to give Sauron the Death Star,"; things like that.

Then there are the more specific aspects, like the interactions of the various power systems, whether one is just a different interpretation of another or if they're completely different, how a specialist in one handles a specialist in the other, are there any specific combination results, how will a generalist in both fare against a specialist, etc.

Then there are the characters. Are you meshing the characters? Importing them? Keeping the characters themselves to one or the other only (except perhaps for the protagonist whom you've already said is the new incarnation of the dude whose name I'm blanking.

Lastly, is keeping the focus narrow enough so that you can concentrate on one storyline without overwhelming yourself and the reader with too many details that don't interrelate.

Naruto really isn't Yamamoto's incarnation. He just happens to take the role of supreme shinigami, mainly because there's no one else to challenge him for it(yet.)

Wasn't planning on importing other characters. This is basically Naruto where suddenly the afterlfie works like Bleach. The closest to a Bleach character might be Naruto's replacement on the Team, and that is mor elikely to be a background/cameo character, and will probably have some significant changes.

I do need to work on the systems, but for now this is how it works:
A living body generates chakra. A soul generates Reiatsu. They cannot be combined without significant research into that, which would probably take years. They can create similar effects to one another, but the means to achieve that effect are different.

Shinigami naturally have an advantage against ninjas, mainly because they can't be seen unless the ninja has the ability to see the dead, and cannot be touched unless the ninja has some sort of spiritual power. This will likely become a problem at some point, since it would be very easy to commit murder as a Shinigami, but will probably be glossed over in the beginning.

when the author says "probably", chances are it will become a plot point some day...

Chakra is supposed to be composed of spiritual energy and physical energy. Is reiatsu therefore different from that?

Reiatsu is supposedly just the spiritual energy... Maybe by "awakening the Reiatsu" you mean letting them use it separately?
What does it makes it's interaction with chakra, wich is the combination with physical?

If reiatsu is indeed the spiritual component for chakra, then what is the physical component? Also, what happens when chakra and reiatsu clash (e.g.: a fireball hits a bakudo shield)?

Consider it author fiat that chakra is physical, and reiatsu is spiritual. The bottom line is I'm keeping them separate from each other, since I don't want to bog his down with in depth science and philosophy debates. If you want, you can think of Chakra as "Mind and Body" and Reiatsu as "Soul."

As for what happens when one hits the other, it would be like matter hitting antimatter. Things explode. Whichever is the more powerful technique will trump the other, but it will get screwed up in the process. Either drastically weakening for a bit until it can reassert itself or exhausting itself.

Now: Quick question: For Naruto's Zanpakuto, I was planning on him having Nine different releases, one for each of the Kyuubi's Tails.

Yes, it would be over powered and just screams Sue, but I was planning on having it be Difficult, but Awesome. As in, by the time some of the prodigies are unlocking Bankai, Naruto is still halfway through his Shikais.

Naruto was effectively chosen by Death itself to be the ruler over the shinigami, and I wanted his zanpakuto reflect that. He should have difficultly mastering it, because each aspect of it will represent a different aspect of shinigami skills, and a different power set he needs to be adept at using.

Ideally, this would lead to Smart!Naruto, who actually stops to think things through. IN practice, he might not reach that level, but he will take a moment to decide which aspect would be best suited for a particular battle.

Thoughts?

Nine releases would be tolerable to me IF they are internally consistent and make sense for the world. Maybe transition them slightly away from traditional bankai effects and orient them more towards powers exhibited by the Naruto world demons. One for each tail. But with a twist, since they're soul based instead of natural world based.

An appropriate example of this is the nibi's ability to command dead, or something like that. Doesn't have to be an exact copy of the ability, but something that reflects the essence of the nibi as perhaps the 2nd shikai or bankai.

Well, I have some plans for the demons, so I'm not planning on having Naruto's releases resemble their powers. I was planning on having one release for each aspect of the shinigami (hand to hand, swordsmanship, shunpo, and kido) Probably one defensive , at least one elemental, and that leaves three open slots for the moment. I could go with more elemental things, or some more esoteric abilities. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Another thing I'm trying to work out is what to do with the original Death God. He's going to be killed off for obvious reasons, but should I have him leave something behind? Here are a few ideas

Sogyoku- Remnant of God's Power
Kido Library: Remnant God's Mind
Black Zanpakto: Remnant of God's Soul

Sogyoku and the library are self explanatory. The Black Zanpakto I have a couple of ideas for:
1: It allows the user to use the full power of the Original Death God, at the expense of their reiatsu, and when that runs out, their soul. Given the sheer difference between the Original an dthe new generation, most people would die before completeing even a single attack, and captain class beings probably could use it for more than a few minutes before it caused permanent damage.
2: Three "Miracles" that are beyond the reach of shinigami or ninja. Resurrection, breaking the unbreakable, etc.
3: Minor access to the Original Death God. Doesn't give any special powers, but can use him as a sounding board, liek regular zanpakto spirits. Allows the user to have access to a second shikai/bankai, if they can unlock them.
