Hmm, well, that's different. Usually it has Naruto going through the traditional story and shawing off his mad skillzorz. Nice touch...it'll be interesting to see what he does, and who else he picks to be shinigami. Hopefully, he doesn't accidentally let someone like Sasuke get his hands on some...

At any rate. *steeples his fingers together and frowns* Interesting.

I can't really see Naruto picking any ninja to become shinigami here. If Naruto thought he wouldn't have time being both, why would someone else be able to juggle both 'jobs'?

Hmmmmm, Zabuza as first Kenpachi anyone, Haku as a healer?
Hoooo boy, there's a lot of fun in this yet.

Can anyone say Yoruichi's ancestor, Kitty-chan :D

Well, there is the possibility that Naruto, as the head shinigami, wouldn't mind making some 'part-time' shinigami to help him out on occasion...though having people to help him full-time would probably be better. The main problem is, that most people in Naruto are shinobi...so the only ones that could help Naruto full-time would likely be missing nin, without any obligations to their village, or someone who retires from being a shinobi, either to help out Naruto, or due to extensive injuries or some other circumstances that prevent them from being a shinobi...though, of course, those would likely prevent them from being a shinigami, unless the shinigami's blood would restore their bodies.

Very few characters who are civilians are actually featured in Naruto, so it would likely have to involve OCs if you went purely with civilians, not to mention they probably wouldn't be as efficient when it comes to fighting. All the ones I can think of off the top of my head are Ayame, Teuchi, Inari, Tsunami, and Tazuna...most of which likely wouldn't work too well as shinigami. Though Ayame, Tsunami, and Teuchi as shinigami does have a certain beguiling quality about it, now that I think about it...

Nevertheless, I would imagine part-time shinobi helpers, missing-nins, and one or two civilians would likely make up Naruto's shinigami corp...as well as conscripted members from other villages, perhaps. I could see, say, some of the Sound Ninja possibly wanting to defect, if Naruto approached them properly and they didn't really want to be under Orochimaru's control...

Naruto could just give the power to those who have just died or are on their death bed. A ninja who has finished his life would far better a choice then a kind hearted normal person. They would take less training too.

Of course, the primary issue, again, is that doing so will definitely involve OCs. Not that OCs are inherently bad...but they don't have the authenticity than a canonical character does, even a minor one that you've expanded on significantly, so it's often a harder route to take. Good OCs, alas, are rare.

Though, if he wants to do it...well, we'll see how they turn out. Still, most authors hesitate to bring out large amounts of OCs...and I don't know about any ninjas dying of old age in canon, though there's a few on their death beds...mostly due to enemy action, admittedly.

Hmm. Wonder what'll happen when Sarutobi tries to summon the Shinigami? Assuming things don't diverge too much for that event to happen.

the thought of just turning people into reapers is a little strange in my opinion. Even if it IS pretty much the only way to fully progress the story, the most likely and believable concept would be that since the universal laws are now changing, slowly the souls gain the ability to become shinigami depending on their life. I mean, if there was only supposed to be 1 shinigami in the 1st place, why would there be the blood of a reaper?

The one who actually fits the profile of reaper the most would be Yugito and her nibi's control of the dead.

Now that I think about it, since this is a bleach crossover, all ninja are fucked. Hell will come to nearly everyone... (all the ninja at the very least)

I guess I'll address some things now...

Naruto could balance being a ninja and being a shinigami. The main reason he says he can't is because he's matured, at least a little, and knows that he can't devote time to his dreams right now.

Most of Naruto's allies will be characters in the actual series. Since I don't feel like killing off a good portion of the cast (yet), they'll try to balance their shinigami duties with their regular life. Besides, C-rank missions and higher are an opportunity to recruit shinigami for different part of the EC.

The Blood of the Reaper thing basically jump starts the consumer's own latent abilities, similar to how Rukia's Sword/Kisuke's Shattered Shaft jump started Ichigo's powers. He could wait until they died, and then put them through the Shinigami Training, but he probably can't afford to wait that long. The Blood is simply there to speed up the process so Naruto can actually get some allies without losing his own powers.

I really haven't decided how to handle the Hell aspect... Probably, the rules about where you go when you die will be slightly different for this world, because of the different circumstances. I guess I'll deal with it when I deal with it.

Zabuza and Haku would make for interesting shinigami, IMHO.

People that could die and become shinigami and would still not affect Narutoverse in any known way:

Anko could die against Orochimaru in the forest. It's not like she ever appeared after the chunin exam again.

Inuzuka Hana, another one that only had a cameo.

Nara Yoshino, appeared once also. But might have influenced Shikamaru a bit like Asumas death did.

----------

Then there is the Sandaime that might still die in the chunin exam. Not sure how Jiraiya will get Tsunade back if Naruto don't come along.

Or you can have Orochimaru die in the fight with Sarutobi. Orochimaru would be perfect for the research department. ;)

Heck, there might be some Uchiha ghosts lingering about still after the massacre.

Hmm, my speculations appear to have been correct.

I doubt Uchiha ghosts would be feasible, given that it was implied, I believe, that the previous shinigami was keeping everything running smoothly, and it's only now that everything's going to go FUBAR...unless he let spirits just run around the place... :huh.:

Orochimaru is a no go. Naruto isn't quite as logical as Yamamato. But if Sarutobi became a shinigami it would take a long time for Naruto to cement his path as the strongest. Plus, there is the question of how Sarutobi dies. If he summons Naruto would Naruto reject his death and put the extra effort in extracting Orochimaro's soul free of charge?

That sounds like something he'd do.

Snippet:

--- --- --- --- ---

Despite spending most of the night training, Naruto was fully awake the next day. Securing his weapon at his side, he quickly departed.

He had a lot of things to do.

--- --- --- --- ---

The first thing Naruto did was visit a tailor. As much as he loved the color orange, the Shinigami had hammered it into his skull that certain expectations shinigami were supposed to uphold, especially when that shinigami was the Commander-To-Be.

Still he loved his jumpsuit. Not just because it was an economical choice (though that was a factor, especially after hearing how much his new clothes would cost), but because it told the world that he was there, and there as nothing they could do about it. Pride was another factor, as no one else could claim to avoid ANBU while wearing something so eye catching.

ôWell, it's not like I have to wear it ALL of the time...ö Naruto muttered as he left the shop. Idly strolling to his next destination, a glimpse of pink aught his attention, and Naruto rushed over, and grinned as he realized who it was.

ôHey Sakura-chan!ö Naruto roared, waving avidly at his pinked haired crush.

ôDon't call me that idiot!ö She retorted.

ôDo you want to go on a date?ö

ôEven if I wanted to, I can't. I'm on an important mission with Sasuke-kun right now!ö Sakura sniffed haughtily.

Immediately, Naruto's shoulders slumped, and the pinkette couldn't help but feel bad.

ôNaruto...ö she began.

ôIt's fine! Really! No problem!ö he responded, brushing off her concern. ôSo what's this important mission you're doing?ö

Sakura flinched, ôWell...ö she drawled, stalling for time, ôSASUKE-KUN!!!ö She shrieked, spotting the love of her life approaching

Naruto turned as Sakura rushed her teammate, ôSasuke-kun! Did you get it?ö

ôNoö he muttered, caressing the numerous cuts across his body.

ôWhat happened to you?ö Naruto asked. Were they hunting something? Maybe a pack of wolves?

ôThat's damn cat clawed me and ran off.ö

ôCat?ö

Internally, Sakura moaned, knowing exactly what was coming. Her presious delusion of grandeur was about to be shattered once again.

ôWait, so your 'important' mission is to catch a cat?ö Naruto as in disbelief.

ô...yes...ö she murmured, hoping that he wouldn't hear.

ô...HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!ö Naruto laughed. He tried to hold it back. He really did, for Sakura-chan. But the idea that the almighty rookie of the year Sasuke Uchiha was out ctching cats whiel he hunte down monsters was just too funny.

ôShut it loser.ö

ôHee hee... Thanks Sakura-chan. That really cheered me up.ö Naruto managed to force out as he began to walk away, ôDid I seriously want to go and catch cats? What a stupid job! Bye Sakura-chan! Later Catman!ö

--- --- --- --- ---
--- --- --- --- ---
--- --- --- --- --

Pretty rough, but I think it's pretty good overall. The rest of the chapter is going to be Naruto making preparations for his new job, followed by some late night training, and mayhaps an unexpected encounter.

You know, the Facts challenge seems to be pretty popular... maybe I should get in on the craze? I'm sure there are some interesting things about the characters, and it might help me develop future plot points...

Also, a quick omake for the Wave Arc.

--- --- --- --- ---
--- --- --- --- ---
--- --- --- --- ---

ôI'm actually a man.ö Haku commented.

ôWHAAAT?!?!ö Naruto screeched, before his body fell limp.

Haku giggled lightly. It was always fun to see people's reactions. Though none of them had reacted quite so strongly.

Beside Haku, Naruto stood in his shinigami form, engaged in a furious debate.

'Aw man... what do I do? I really have to know the truth, but I don't want to be a pervert...'

Naruto continued to wrestle with himself, curiosity fighting morality, until Haku began to leave.

'Damn it! It's now or never!'

Forcing the part of himself protesting into submission, Naruto stealthily leapt into action. He closed the distance between the two of them, and struck.

Haku froze, disbelieving that the belt had come undone on its own. That was further verified as invisible hands began to strip of the remaining garments.

ôEEEEEK!!!! GHOST PERVERT!!!!!ö Haku screamed, thrashing as Naruto deftly attacked the remaining clothes.

ôDamn it, I'm gonna find out which one you are whether you like it or not!ö

I'm not much of a fan of Naruto changing cloths for strange reasons. It could be a point of contension between Naruto and the Shinigami. Also, couldn't you see Naruto forcing all Shinigami to wear orange clothing until he retires? It would be funny to me at least.

I'm surprised the omake didn't have Naruto attempting to grope Haku along with the stripping.

Oddly enough that omake of yours reminds me of an omake I made come to think of it.

In my experience although 'day by day' and 'little by little' are the best way to do things people tend to do a lot all at once, then nothing for a good while. While I understand (though don't share) your opinion about Naruto and changing his looks, it does fit in with his newfound (though likely not as long lived as would be 'best') sense of responsibility to get new 'working clothes'.

Regarding the story itself... this wins so, so hard. Virtual Hokage was good, but really a pretty hard idea to work to its full potential. This is considerably more straightforward.

Regarding hell/everyone's various final destinations... perhaps it will be Naruto himself (and his eventual allies) that will have to actually construct a place of infinite torment and everlasting suffering. It could even lead to the eventual birth of their first trator. Someone put so much time into it, but wasn't as strong as he should have been/the others and decides to imitate California rush hour drivers. Or something.

Whoo! Thread necromancy!

"Damn it!" Naruto growled, as the jutsu the scroll detailed failed again.

"I'm so close, so why can't I do this right?!"

"NARUTO!!!" Iruka's yell caused the academy student to flinch.

"DAMN IT!!! I WAS SO CLOSE TOO!!!"

"What the hell are you talking about? Were you really trying to escape?"

"What are you talking about Iruka-sensei? I was just doing my extra credit."

"Extra credit?"

"Yeah! Mizuki-sensei said that if I could learn one of these jutsu, I could become a ninja! If I had just ten more minutes, I know I could pull this off!"

"Mizuki?!"

Before Naruto could reply, Iruka tackled him, intercepting the shuriken Mizuki had thrown.

--- --- --- ---

Iruka had ordered him to run, and Naruto, for once in his life, listened to him. He ran through the forest, though no matter how fast he ran he could still hear his teachers behind him.

He heard Mizuki attack Iruka.

He heard Mizuki taunting him.

he heard about the monster inside of him.

And Finally, he heard his teacher defend him, revealing how important Naruto was to him.

"Iruka-sensei..." Naruto murmured to himself, stunned at his teacher's true feelings. Despite everything, Iruka had still cared about him... Clenching his fist, Naruto stood up, prepared to do anything to save his teacher's life. He was still the student who had failed the exam, he had even failed th extra credit assignment, but Naruto would fight anyway. He felt something stirring in his body, something he had never felt before. His will set, Naruto seized the unknown feeling, and everything changed.

Mizuki's attack was halted when both chunin felt an explosion of strange power nearby. Their uncertain expressions turned to shock, as Naruto emerged from the fading nexus.

His clothes had changed. The orange jumpsuit he was always wearing was gone, replaced by a black kimono. At his side hung a sheathed blade, but beyond that Iruka couldn't tell much about it.

The biggest change were his eyes. They were... empty. Not the emptiness of someone who no longer cares about life, nor the void of a hardened killer, but the eyes of one of who had lost consciousness, or the eyes of a dead man.

Mizuki paused as well, just as shocked at the sudden change, before he began to chuckle.

“Really, Naruto? A transformation jutsu's the best you can manage? No wonder you failed the exam three times!”

Naruto didn't react. Mizuki took that as encouragement to continue.

“Even if that damned fox didn't exist, I should kill you just to put you out of your misery!!!” He cried out, swinging his weapon at his former student.

Naruto still didn't respond to Mizuki's taunts. Iruka stared at him in mild disbelief that the boisterous student would remain silent in the face of such insults, let alone stand and wait for death, but when he looked closer, he saw that Naruto's empty eyes had a hint of awareness in them, like some great predator waiting to strike. A feeling of dread sank into the pit of his stomach

Naruto moved.

He moved faster than Iruka could see, simply appearing behind Mizuki. The rogue chunin jumped away from Naruto, who remained perfectly still.

“Heh, just lucky I guess.” Mizuki muttered to himself. “Let's see if you can be that lucky twice you damn fox!”

Again, Naruto dodged seemingly without effort, but this time, almost as an afterthought, casually lashed out at the chunin, sending him flying across the forest. Mizuki managed to recover and land safely, though not gracefully, ending up sprawled in the boughs of one of the trees. As he struggled to his feet, he stared at the young blonde who had so casually dealt with him

“What the hell?”

It was the last coherent thought Mizuki would manage.

Naruto erupted into a flurry of movement, faster than Iruka could see clearly. Mizuki struggled to keep pace, but was outclassed. It was all he could do to defend against the onslaught, and even then, he was still getting injured. At first, it was some light cuts on his arms or legs, but then, Naruto managed to impale his arm. Mizuki managed to avoid the follow up attack, but with only one functioning arm, his defense was crippled. Within seconds, Naruto had scored another strike, then another, and another. Mizuki could only scream in agony as Naruto attacked.

Until it abruptly ceased.

As Iruka stared at Naruto in disbelief, the young blond collapsed unconscious.

---

Naruto woke in a dazed state of mind. He opened his eyes, only to be blinded by brilliant whiteness, like one of the hospital lights was shining in his face. As his eyes began the slow process of adjusting, he tried to remember what led to his current state. The last thing he could clearly remember was Mizuki attacking Iruka, and getting angry. Iruka was willing to put his own life on the line for him, and the thought of losing someone willing to go that far was unacceptable. He had reached deep down inside himself, reaching to draw enough chakra to attempt the jutsu one more time. He continued drawing it, until he couldn't pull any more out. It wasn't enough. With a scream, he dug even deeper, pulling out... something.

and then...

Naruto groaned. After that, everything dissolved into a blurry haze. Fortunately, his eyes had adapted to the light, and with another groan of discomfort, he opened them.

A monstrous face hovered above him. Naruo shrieked in surprise, attempting to get away from whatever it was, but no matter what he did, he couldn't seem to get away. It was like no matter what his body did, it was trapped in the same place.

“SO, THE YOUNG BOY AWAKENS.”

Naruto froze, gaping in shock at the creature knowing his name. Before he could say anythign of his own, it began speaking again.

“WE HAVE MUCH TO TALK ABOUT.”

Since the original posts got deleted, and I'm too lazy to go and hunt for them on the old site, I'll give a quick overview of this idea:

Essentially, Naruto draws on the power of his seal, and gains the power of a Shinigami. This has the effect of breaking reality a bit. there was only supposed to be one Shinigami, and suddenly having two has some adverse effects, which effectively changes their afterlife from whatever it is in canon to the Bleach version of the afterlife.

This is still a rough draft, and I'll probably rework it a bit, but I did want to get it back out there, and get some feedback that isn't more than half a decade old.

The reason Naruto suddenly could kick so much ass was he got possessed by the original shinigami for a bit. Going to say so in the next part when I get around to writing it. He's going to have to work his way up to that level through the story.

Planned story arcs:
Prologue (This post)
Training Arc: Naruto is taught the basics of his new powers, enough that he can do his job without screwing up. Anything else he'll have to learn on his own. Probably will explore the afterlife a bit here, since it's an entirely new world now.

Recruitment Arc: Naruto starts finding people/ghosts with spiritual power, and starts training them. Results... vary.

Hollow's Revelation Arc: Naruto learns why he needs to have all of those combat skills, when the first Hollows start to show up. Possibly another recruitment arc, but probably will use the next potential arc instead.

The Other Shinigami Arc: Other souls have developed Shinigami powers, and aren't affiliated with Naruto's faction.

Shinigami Civil War: Not everyone wants to follow some dumb kid, after all, and some of the more skilled Shinigami decide they should be the ones in charge.

It's not exactly deleted, just ... not displayed. You can quote the post and then preview and it shows up just fine. Regardless, I don't think I'd read this before and while it looks interesting on the surface I'm concerned about some of the meshing aspects. It'll be intriguing to see how you handle it.

What aspects in particular? Knowlege about potential roadblocks can only help make this better.
