That's why I'm not holding my breath for the FF13 sequels.
I'm looking forward to Versus XIII, tbh.
But before I was even aware of all the internet snark and caustic reviewers (when I was younger), here's what I thought:
-It is impossible to care about anything in FF8, because the characters are barely real. Everything felt false. Like they were going through the motions with dolls and then, something 'romantic' or something 'suspenseful' happened, merely because it was time for something 'romantic' and 'suspenseful' to happen. It felt fraudulent.
-FFX looked impressive and I liked the beginning because it had heavy metal and city destroying monsters in it. Then, the majority of the game settled down into this monotonous crap. I played all the way through because I was OCD about the completion. But looking back, when I picked up the controller, I barely remembered what was even happening in the game. Honestly, I forgot entirely about major parts of the plot because it was so repetitive. By the end of the game, I remembered maybe three temples, one of the Yuna kidnapping attempts, and two of the Seymour battles. So much of that plot is indistinguishable from itself due to how many times the same thing happens, over and over again. You meet all the playable characters in the first 10% of the game and then, encounter them later. Even the plot twists in that game are so stretched out and obvious that they fail to be entertaining. I liked the fight system and the somewhat repetitive enemies didn't bother me much, but what I listed above is what I truly remember about FFX.
As for FF9, I couldn't really take it seriously. As much as people give Tidus crap for being annoying, Vivi really takes the cake for me.
I only continued because the villain was some dominatrix chick who wore a thong.
A few days later, I visibly paled, put the controller down, and didn't come back.
