The Legend of Zelda: The Intern of Time
Sighing to himself, Link continued to mindlessly sort papers, barely maintaining his focus as he stared at the silently ticking clock
4:56
4:56 on a Friday afternoon. Four minutes. Two hundred and forty seconds. Less now., That was all that stood between him and two full days of freedom. Two whole days of having his brain melted by video games and cable instead of filing and collating. Just a little bit longer.
4:57
Putting the papers aside for a moment, Link took the time to straighten his desk layout. An organized workplace means an organized mind, and an organized mind is a productive mind! Shuddering as the speech from last week's motivational seminar passed through his head, Link glaced up at the clock again.
4:58
Link resisted the urge to scream. Intellectually, he knew that fretting about the time would only make it seem longer, but after a week of drudgery, of thankless work, his mind was frayed, and he just KNEW that the clock was mocking him. Taunting him by keeping him here. Longer than he wanted to be, longer than he needed to be. Longer and longer, stretching into eternity.
4:58
DAMN IT!!!
Slapping himself lightly, he tried to take his mind of it, tried to focus on the upcoming weekend. Closing his eyes for a moment, he thought about how nice I would be to get completely hammered and watch late night television.
Unnoticed by Link, the clock clicked to 4:59, and his supervisor walked up behind him.
ôSleeping on the job, Mr. Conrad?ö Lurching forward at the sudden disturbance, Link spun around and smiled.
ôNo sir, just looking forward to the weekend!ö
ôThat's nice to hear. But before you go, would you mind running this up to Helson's office?ö
ôNot a problem sir!ö
ôThat's great. Have a great weekend Mr. Conrad.ö
As soon as he was out of sight, Link slouched down, the happy mask replaced by genuine apathy and dislike. Sighing to himself, Link took the files and headed towards the elevator, doing his best to ignore the clock, which now read 5:00.

ôMr. Helson?ö Link asked, knocking on the door. Receiving a wave of acknowledgment, he meekly entered the room, and waited for his superior to finish his phone call. Spotting a chair, h mentally debated if he should take a seat, or remain standing. Just before he could make up his mind, his reverie was interrupted by the sound of the phone angrily being hung up.
ôWhat is it?ö Mr. Helson asked, clearly not in a good mood.
ôNothing much sir, Mr. Erikson wanted em to deliver this before I left.ö Link answered, quickly handing over the files.
ôI see... he's lucky that I'm a generous man, and won't count these as late.ö
ôWell, if you don't need anything else sir...ö Link said, slowly inching towards the door.
ôHold it right there.ö
ôSir?ö
These were meant to be delivered to your division, but without these papers, I've had to sit on them. Mr. Helson spoke, gesturing at a significant pile of papers and folders.
ô...I'll be sure to take them down on my way out.ö Link responded, hoping that would be enough. It wasn't.
ôUnfortunately, these need to be completed by Monday, and since it's now 5:05, I'm sure everyone else in your office has already gone home. You do realize what this means, don't you?ö
ôYes sir...ö Link replied, noticably slumping, ôI'll be sure to complete them and turn them in first thing on Monday. No problem.ö
For the first time since Link entered the office, Mr. Helson smiled, ôThanks for taking one for the team. Keep this up and you'll earn yourself a promotion.ö
ôThank you sir.ö Link forced himself to smile, before picking up the pile and exiting the room.
So much for an enjoyable weekend...
--- --- --- --- ---
The day just seemed to get worse from there. There wasn't nearly enough room in his briefcase, so Link had to remove everything and reorganize it so he could fit them in. By the time that was finished, it was 5:15 and he had missed his bus, forcing him to walk almost a mile to catch the train instead. He barely made it on in time, but the extra fees for not having a ticket beforehand emptied out his wallet. After another long walk, followed by trudging up several flights of stairs, he finally reached his apartment. Throwing down everything work related, he checked his messages, only to find out that his friends had already gone out for the night, leaving him behind. Sure, he could try calling them, but since their first planned stop was a stripclub, they would probably be off, and if he called later, all he would get for his troubles would be a drunken conversation if he was lucky, or a trip down to the police station if they were having fun.
Link pressed his hands to his head, trying to stave off the building headache. Lurching to the refrigerator, he grabbed one of his few remaining beers, before collapsing on the couch and downing it in a single go.
He should never have taken this job at Ganoncorp...

Not sure if I'm going to go anywhere with this, but Luthorne mentioned the idea of a Modern Day Zelda in one of my old threads, and I wanted to try something new to see if I could get back in the fanfiction groove. I probably won't take it in the direction he wanted, but it's still early, and we'll see where this goes.
So, what do you guys think?
