After renting a room in one of Konoha's smaller hotels, Sasuke began the annoying process of dyeing his hair.
While his body went through the motions, the temporaly misplaced Uchiha's mind was churning. 'From what I've gathered so far, I've somehow managed to travel approximately 5 years into the past. What's more, there are discrepancies between what happened in my timeline, and the events of this time line. The two most obvious so far is the emergence of a new clan, and Naruto's competence. Do they have a connection? If so, which is the cause and which is the effect? Or are they both the result of an unseen change I have yet to grasp?'
Growing frustrated at the growing number of questions, Sasuke took a deep breath in order relax, allowing the tension to visibly drain from his shoulders. 'I still need to gather more information, so I can accurately gauge the differences between my memories and this reality,' Sasuke thought as the hair dye had finished its job. After that, he carefully placed a pair of blue coloured contacts onto his eyes.
'There are five main ways I could gather the intel I need,' Sasuke continued to plan as he dressed himself in his new second hand outfit. 'By visiting the library, the Hokage's office, the Academy, or by watching either my younger self, or by observing Naruto. Depending on how recent the divergence began, the library could be a good source of information, but its a gamble; if the divergence point is recent, it's unlikely that the library will have the most up to date information I need. Spying on myself or Naruto is dangerous; as much as I hate to admit it, even at this age we both had great instincts. A prolonged observation period would be risky. The Hokage's office will have all the information I need, but it will also be the most highly guarded. The Academy will have less information than the library, but will have more specialized intelligence on the students.'
'Seems that the Academy is a good place to start,' Sasuke finally decided as he wrapped the scarf around his neck.
After finally finishing getting dressed, the Uchiha appraised himself in the mirror.
His hair was green and his eyes were blue; both were attention grabbing, but not excessively so. His clothing was simple and slightly worn, but still very much usable, and his new red scarf was wrapped loosely around his neck and the lower half of his face.
Hopefully, the bright hair and eye colours would distract people from looking at his face too closely, which was the real problem. Without a way to conceal his resemblance to the Uchiha family, it would be all too obvious that he was related to them, somehow.
The anwser to that lay in the dark blue scarf; the tricky bit was wearing it high enough that it covered his face but low enough that it didn't arouse suspicion from patrolling ANBU. It was a delicate balance, but one he was confident he could maintain.
Nodding once in satifaction at his revised appearence, Sasuke set off.
-----------------
The trip to the Academy was quick and largely uneventful; the only hiccop being a furious Hyuuga Hinata striding down the street, her Byakugan active. Luck was on his side in that encounter, seeing as he was facing away from her; unless she concentrated on him, it was highly doubtful she would recognise his appearence from her point of view.
Making a note of the small discrepancy of that meek Hyuuga being openly angry, Sasuke soon arrived at the Academy. Once there, he didn't even bother to sneak in, instead choosing to simply walk through the doors.
'This place is exactly how I remember it,' Sasuke thought with distain as he observed the plain walls, the classrooms filled to the brim with brats and the occasional pencil pusher who walked past him in the halls; to those last he always remembered to at least nod his head in greeting. The majority didn't even look at him twice.
Coming to the records room door, Sasuke immediately tried opening it, only to find it locked. Sasuke briefly glanced down the corrider in both directions and then, finding no one, the Uchiha placed his right ear against the door. When he detected no noise from inside the room, he proceeded to pick the lock with a Lightning jutsu.
The records room was a small room tightly packed with filing cabinets. They contained the files of all 6 years worth of students, as well last years graduating class. Sasuke ignored it all as he moved to the only blank space on the far wall, hidden in the very corner of the room.
He knew for a fact that these files were at best incomplete, and more than likely inaccurate. It was common practice for Academy students to sneak in and attempt to doctor their report cards and test results. You were given extra credit for the attempt, and even more depending on how long it took the teachers to figure it out. And if you managed to fool anybody official with your forgery? There were rumours that it instantly gave you 100% in stealth and insurgency, one of the unofficial categories you were constantly tested on.
No, the real records were kept sealed inside the the only open space of the wall, a fact that Sasuke was one of very few genin to know, and presumably the only one who knew as an Academy student. And just to prove he knew, he'd snuck in, grabbed his own files and wrote "Sasuke was here, Uzumaki's a loser" on the front in big bold letters when he was about 11 years old. That was on a day that Naruto had been particularly annoying, bragging that he'd snuck in and changed the records, so he was sure to pass next time.
Releasing the seal with a pop, a medium sized scroll appeared in his hands. Inside the scroll was a list of names divided into sections by year, and then further divided by class.
It took only 30 seconds for Sasuke to find both his and Naruto's name, right next to one another. As an after thought, Sasuke also looked up Hinata. Next to each of their names was another seal, and after releasing them, three large brown folders appeared.
He grabbed Hinata's first, skipped to her personality profile and quickly skimmed through it.
Timid, shy, quick to make peace, bla bla bla; there was nothing different there. That meant that either Hinata was having a bad day, or something had happened to change her attitude after graduation.
Resealing Hinata's file, Sasuke moved onto his and Naruto's; he was not entirely surprised to discover that his file was deviod of the graffitti he himself had placed. That meant the point of divergence was before graduation.
He read his own file first; great ability, bla bla bla, agressive and anti-social bla bla bla, possibility of mental health problems bla bla bla, overly prideful, arrogant and cruel.
Huh?
'I don't remember being overly cruel in the Academy,' Sasuke thought in surprise, trying to remember his younger days. 'In fact, I was down right civil and ignored everyone equally. Except Naruto, but no one can ignore Naruto.'
Apart from that and a small foot note that he could be a bit of a show off, Sasuke didn't find anything that he wouldn't have expected to see in his own Academy file.
Finally, Sasuke turned to the final folder he'd removed; the picture stapled to the cornor was of the same idiot in orange that Sasuke knew, with the same idiotic smile and the same idiotic expression, but even so, there was something off about it. Sasuke couldn't place what it was, but it gave him the shivers.
The infromation inside the file was nothing new either. Poor results, low intelligence, hyper active, cocky and aggressive, feircely competitive.
It was only when Sasuke turned to the last couple of pages, those detailing the graduation exam, that new information started rolling in.
It detailed his incredible marks, where he went above and beyond the testing requirements in order to achieve a high grade, and some of the non-Academy jutsu he showed in them.
After that, on the last page, it had a note from an anonymous class observor.
It read:
Naruto displayed a huge change in attitude, skills and fasion today. Instead of the gaudy orange jumpsuit, he instead chose a much more sensable black ensemble, which showed off his well defined muscles and complimented his hair and eyes exquisitly. He stopped acting like a goofy idiot, and began to act more like a proper shinobi; he was observed giving his peers a lecture on the neccesity of killing, stopped paying romantic attention to that waste of talent Haruno Sakura, and engaged in a fight with his comrade Uchiha Sasuke, instigated by the Uchiha after Naruto called his family scum.
In the tests, Naruto went above and beyond the requirements, and took great delight rubbing it in his detractors faces; it was a great example of nonverbally threatening his enemies in the class and telling them that he is not one to be trifaled with.
Its my opinion that, unlike Uchiha and Haruno, Uzumaki will go far in the shinobi world.
Sasuke blinked as he finished reading the note. "What a biased load of shit," Sasuke muttered out loud.
