Sounds like the TEA party to me.

As for the whole idea, I suggest some mercenary-style of Murim. If they operated in a fedual version of a shadow war in modern times, it might be an interesting set up while allowing to bring more Naruto style plot and themes into the story.

And back when they first came into existence, the yakuza primarily opposed the extremely corrupt government and genuinely meant to support the common folks.
I've never heard of this - could you please elaborate?
There's not much to say - the Yakuza was basically born when some people got fed up with the samurai the Shogunate laid off being dicks. But that didn't mean they were FRIENDS of the Shogunate, oh no. After all it was the Tokugawa who sent all those vagrant samurai packing and caused them to turn to thievery. They disliked both the ronin and the Shogunate about equally - with good cause, admittedly.

Unfortunately, they are a far cry from the people protecting their own that they originated as. They used to be people who kept their own homes and territories free of pesky wandering ronin stealing and killing, but they ended up becoming just as bad as those they were born to protect against over time. I guess the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

I admit that I'm not too knowledgeable about ancient Japanese history, but I thought the Yakuza originated as corrupt street peddlers and operators of (illegal at the time) gambling rings. I'd never heard of these noble village defenders before.

That's actually what most jobless SAMURAI became. After Japan was unified, most former samurai ended up with no master and no other way to make a living than petty banditry and two-bit conning. Well, some just became homicidal maniacs for hire... but never you mind that.

Some of them did.

There's always someone who will claim to be good guys and instead be total asshats. Modern politics is crawling with those types.

So, the only person who gives a source is ignored.
That's more because we see your name than anything else. If you provided more than one-liner answers on a regular basis, most of us would likely pay more attention to you.

Just saying... :snigger:

Huh, you gave a source?

*goes back and checks*

<a href='http://altman.casimirinstitute.net/yakuza.html' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>So you did.</a> Thanks.

It might help to heed GenocideHeart's advice, though, unless you have something that keeps you from being more communicative.
