Widening the announcements box. Or alternatively, lowering the amount of content in it. Perhaps both.

It probably does not need to really show on a post creation screen either.

The problem, between the banner, the ads, *and* the announcements... I have to scroll down on most screens just to get past all that...

It was not so bad when there was only 1 or two quick messages in it. Currently I'm seeing 4.5, 4 multi-line, and all but 1 with a blank line between them.

A simple improvement, if possible, is to widen it to be across the whole screen, currently it is only as wide as the advertisement above it, or perhaps a little more, so it has huge amounts of unused white space to left and right, at least on my screen, yet the text still wraps, thus pushing everything below it even lower.

I agree with shortening the announcements- as well as less overall. Most of the time, the announcements box should be commented out (Hint: Use <!-- and --> to do that).

People are going to ignore it if it constantly exists and has shit in it.

I would also suggest making an announcements topic (or using the one I made) with information, and only having the Announcement box OCCASIONALLY show a really short sentence with an update date, something like "5/15/13- Iron Fic 5-2 judging is complete!" and having the short blurb be a link to the announcement post (A new post per announcement please, makes linking them easier.)


As for making them wider, no longer than 75% of the screen, otherwise you end up having it as the same length as the rest of the forum and that's terrible- your eye naturally skips past it.

Even 75% would be better than what I see...

It is at a guess some 50% now for me.

It is exactly 50% of your screen at the moment, no matter what the size of your screen is.

As a FYI, not that there may not be a reason, but 5 1/2 hours later, I'm still seeing the same stuff...
