So. Who here has read Worm?

link to the about page is here:

In all seriousness this story is my current, "I must convert every possible fan!" obsession.

So, thoughts? Discussion?

Author's Summary: An introverted teenage girl with unconventional superpowers, Taylor goes out in costume to find escape from an unhappy and frustrated civilian life. Her first attempts at taking down a supervillain see her mistaken for one, and things snowball from there.

Tvtropes' Summary: The story follows Taylor as she quickly gets swept up in the chaos and complexities of the 'cape' community of Brockton Bay by joining with a group of villains known as The Undersiders. Cape politics, factions, rivalries, information warfare, and the individual problems of the people beneath the costumes put even the heroes in something of a gray area. Taylor's actions in the midst of this leave her in a situation where she's forced to make some hard choices, facing the reality of having to do the wrong things for the right reasons.

It's now complete and one of the best things ever.

Actually fairly good take on a "realistic" approach to the superhero genre.

Story length can be daunting, so take your time.

Wishes to strangle the main characters are not particularly unusual.

Even with the lag on Spacebattleas we are going through a new idea thread for Worm every week and a half. That is one hundred pages of posts about every 10 or 11 days. Some of the idea are quite good, especially amongst the tons that have gotten their own threads of their own. We are currently on the eleventh, which will be finished in about a day or two.

My favorites are the Hypnos Round Robin, and the "Here be Dragons" story written by Ryuugi.

Really it has gotten a major following on Spacebattles if you want to see more of the "Wormverse" then go over there when the lag is not so bad.

Honestly it has been getting better recently. One can go from 10:00 AM to 12:00 without any lag!:D

But in all seriousness if you keep a tab open and then click to "next page" on a thread 7 out of 10 times it will load in the next two or so minutes. Even if it does not you can usually get it to work within 10 to 15 minutes by hitting the refresh button. It does not help with opening new tabs (or posting new things or editing previous posts) all the time but when it does the same thing applies to going to new pages.

It really says something about how fast things are moving in the Worm threads that I have actually learned that this method works.

So anway we know that they are doing some work on fixing the horrible Lag problem that has cropped up in the past few months, and it is slowly getting better.

Still while I prefer the ease of interface for our much beloved TFF, it's just that Spacebattles has a lot more people and things to choose from. And now it is suffering horribly from that due to the tremendous strain on the servers.

Also fuck whoever dropped the majority of Smilies when they switched to Xenforo.

And that is the last I will say on this subject.

Moving on. There are a lot of good Worm stories on Spacebattles, sadly some of the best have fallen to the wayside. It is seriously overtaking Familiar of Zero as the new "This is a really interesting setting I want to play in" fad. Except unlike Familiar of Zero Worm is not a nightmare of wasted potential and is a truly engaging and entertaining story.

I happen to be a fan of ...Fucking Tinkers over on spacebattles.

And I'm sorry if this thread is redundant. I didn't know about the one in the original fiction section.

Yeah, I mostly post in on Spacebattles, I thought about throwing Queen of Monsters here first actually, but between the forum just not picking up like it once was, and my own confusion about where to put it I just posted there. I do think everyone should read Worm though, such a great story. Still sad about it ending though. I keep finding myself clicking back to it and realizing I am waiting for an update that will never come.

I've caught myself doing the same.

Have you been reading wildbow's new work?

I read the first chapter a while ago after clicking the link in the original fiction section, I was fine but I thought I would not be interested in the story so I stopped. Now though, am I reading the tvtropes summary right, she joins a villain group? I'm going to have to give it a second look.

I was stuck on Arc 16 for a while, started reading it again a week ago, now at Arc 23. Cool stuff.

Wouldn't call it 'new work' as it's just some tests to see which one will 'become' the new work.

Any ideas on just what Brute ranks translate into in terms of strength or durability? Or what the other powers would translate into?

Say, would base stats Hulk be a Brute 8, 10, or 12?
Would Quicksilver be a Move 5 or 6?
etc.

that's difficult.
The scale is 1-10 with 12 as a shorthand for "off the scale".

the thing is, ratings aren't absolute. They can change (like Lung). In addition, the ratings may not be accurate, as they are a PRT designation, not WoG. Not to mention, many characters aren't given ratings.

The wiki offers descriptions of each recorded power by classification and rating.

Okay.
Wish there had been some kind of explanation of the scale in canon. Brute 1 can lift this much, Brute 2 this much, and on and on.

Hard stats aren't how the PRT's scale work. It's not a "Brute 1 can do X" style scale, it's "This is how fucked you are on a 10 point scale if you run into that dude while he is pissed" kind of scale.

There's also th fact that, unlik most generic power scales and ratings, they aren't about how a power works.

The PRT decided explaining complex power mechanics for every single person they try to fight to a team of operatives ever single engagement was stupid, so they created a tactical scale based on what a power does, rather then how it works-

Because at the end of the day, do you actually GIVE a fuck about the specifics of HOW the person you're fighting is immune to bullets beyond the fact they are?

The scale used in worm is purely based on the tactical aspects of what to expect when fighting them. It also is purely based off of the danger the parahuman is not a measure of their actual power. 1 means that they aren't that much more dangerous than a powerful normal person due to this power. 3-5 means they are pretty dangerous by cape standards. 6-8 is very dangerous and meaningful powers in their own right. 9-10 is bullshit overpowered hax. 12 means they break the scale, time to start praying.

The local superman equivalent is brute 8. Taylor has master 8 for total control over bugs in a 5 block radius with perfect multitasking and coordination.

Brute means they are really tough and can hit hard.
Master means minions or can control people.
Breaker means their body can break physics in some manner other than being a brute.
Striker is a subset of brute but they apply the physics breaking at touch range instead of self.
Movers are good at moving around.
Thinkers know more than you do either through special senses or being smarter than you are.
Blasters blast people with ranges powers.
Strangers do sneaky shit.
Tinkers build stuff.
Trumps mess with the concept of powers somehow. (copying, nullification, changing powers, augmenting them, granting them)

Have not seen that one. Summary, please?

Say, do Worm fanfic ideas go in Book Ideas or Original Ideas. It seems to me that Book fits better, but maybe not.

...Fucking Tinkers is a Post Worm fic wherein Post-Worm Taylor gets bodily shoved into SAO. She comes to the whole situation with a lot more of a zero tolerance mindset than most players and that causes complications VERY quickly.

So here I am, reading Worm for the first time, enjoying the hell out of it.

Currently on Colony 15.10, so more or less half way through the story, and I have a question.

Anyone else think Taylor is either a) a bit of a bitch, and or b) a gigantic hypocrite?

I love her 90% of the time, but that other 10%...

Alright, so I finished Worm.

Its a seriously good story, and is incredibly well put together, with great characters and character interactions.

That said, there is one thing I'm unsure on.

What's the connection between Eidolon and
the Endbringers? Did his power create them? Was it on purpose, or was it his Shard that took action on its own?

And finally, a theory; Is it possible that Taylor's planning ability is a power from her Shard?
