My position on Mutsumi-Kei isn't that it won't work physically, but that it guts the concept of the story too much. She's not mean or violent or even that difficult to be around. She's open and loving, a true opposite in temperament to Naru. If the two of them were together the Hinata girls would scratch their heads and accept it. They'd probably be married in a month or two and all the usual plotline elements would be destroyed. The match is too good so there would be no struggle. So how would you have a plot?
Okay, now comes the interesting part. Don's met Shinobu and Su, but how're Mutsumi, Kitsune, Motoko and Naru going to take the visit of a man to the Hinata-sou? Place your bets folks, the fireworks are about to fly.
Ah, and before I go on, I suppose you'll want a bio of Donald, right?
NAME: Donald Hansen (nee Johannsen)
AGE: 29
BORN: Bexhill-on-Sea, UK. August 4th, 1912.
OCCUPATION: Chief Petty Officer, Royal Navy (Died on HMS Hood, 24th May 1941)
DESCRIPTION: 5 Foot 11. A slim, but solid build. Dark brown hair, and dark green eyes. Is usually seen wearing a grey sports coat, khaki trousers, black cotton gloves, a pale blue shirt and maroon tie, and when outdoors always wears a brown fedora.
Interesting fact: His family is half-Dutch, and created a Western sword-fighting style that is not too dissimilar to Motokos' "Gods' Cry" style of Kendo. Donald is competent, but not brilliant, in this style, known as the "Johannsen School".

As for couples there are reasons pro-contra them as has been discussed on this thread and seen in many fics... I'm gonna try my hand at why Kei x _____ would work. Not how, but why.
Kei x Mutsumi aka: You know that girl that's too good to be true. - They're like two peas in a pod, clumsy but both have that something special thad does draw people to them. She's always accepted him with all his faults and has given him up on more than one occasion. Had he the chance to be with her with no outside pressure it would be a sure thing. Doable fic couple in a more realistic setting where they come together after a long friendship.
Kei x Mitsune aka: Ever met that girl that was so hot you didnt even try? - A bit of oposites attract, where she can originally see him as just another dupe to be taken advantage and him just blown away by getting the attention of such a hottie. With time and experiences she'd warm up to him and see that there's a lot to him once he finds his way in life. She was the first tone to be informal and often her target for fun at the Hinata Sou (tho why she literally let him cop a feel or two will forever be a mystery). Doable fic also in a realistic sense with plenty of the canon comedical double entendres and accidents.
Kei x Motoko aka: The reason there are a lot of 'Kei turns into a badass' fics out there. - She needs a guy that will treat her as a both woman and as a warrior, he's himself... but on showing his growth, she slowly but steadily learns that life isnt just black and/or white, there are grey areas. The fact that he became super-kei after america only seemed to reinforce the fact that he IS a man, and he can be responsable/masculine when taught/applied properly. Doable fic in a quasi-canon story usually using certain story arcs or Motoko being ooc and more broad minded (due to contact with Kei)
Kei x Shinobu aka: A little bit of sempai worshipping goes a looooong way. - While im not a fan of loli, older guy/younger girl relationships do work. Their interpersonal dynamic clicks nicely... there is a nice rapport and respect between them. He treats her well considering she's a bit of a little sister to him while she sees him as more than a friend. Doable in an AU where she is older or post series where the ages arent that much a restriction, also in a more realistc setting rather than the canon shenanigans.
Kei x Kaolla aka: You know that couple that has nothing in common... yeah THEM. - Ever wonder why people you think arent even remotely interesting to each other come together? they are a good example, sure she initially saw him as a pseudo replacement for her brother, but later on grew to like his better qualities (not just his alleged immortality). Her excentricites bring in a refreshing change of pace to his lifestyle and his average joe attitude balances her out. Doable in a canon influenced storyline either pre or post america trip where her royal background is out in the limelight and/or his growth and maturity begins to pique her interest in acquiring a significant other (her age and appearance is up in the author, usually red moon infulence or aged)
Tsuruko and Amalla I didn't include on this list since they are technically already spoken for. Althought they can be placed in for similar reasons as their respective younger sisters, their age and maturity tosses all those potential problems out the window and lends much more space for the author to break into more original and fantastic shenanigans to get the poor abused ronin into.
and no I didnt include Naru, because that IS canon, and most fics tend to couple Kei with anyone one but her

I personally tend to pass over Sarah as a possible love interest for Kei but in all fairness I'll include a why her.
Kei x Sarah aka: i think the original is called 'the taming of the shrew' - Actually not that hard to think about, considering he's had a long time do get to know her and let her grow up, and his time in america making him Seta Mk.II, one could go Freudian and say Sarah has a bit of an Elektra complex, and a grown up Sarah might be a tomboy but still a young lady and eventually interested in finding someone that can keep up with her. Doable fic would have to age her considerably (a few years post LH) for Kei to see her as more than a little sister and also not feel guilty for being attracted to a younger woman, him following the archaeology route in life would keep him in contact with her and the Seta's (considering Haruka and Noriyasu also married per canon)

Kei x Nyamo aka: you werent expecting this one were you? - So much similar to Shinobu, yet very different; pretty much raised an archaeologist gives her a leg up on the competition about understanding Keitaro and his spelunking dreams. While having her own personal goals and ambitions she'd be willing to join in his or convince him to join hers. Doable fic would situate them in post LH where Kei's passion for his job kept him away from the other girls, the girl in question aged and interested in thenice guy.

Kei x Kanako aka: you just wish she put YOU to the test - Fierce, agressive, possesive, knows what she wants and the only one that can stop her is the one she'd pounce with no remorse and as if her life depended on it. She embodies different characteristics of the main Hinagirls and despite it may be seen as a social taboo (her being adopted) her caring for him surpasses the brother-sister mark. Doable fic would contain her not being adopted by the Urashima family and by another family instead (adopted sister to any of the Hina girls?), her being raised by the Urashimas to become Kei's future bride, even both of them forsaking social convention and falling for each other (possible family problems for drama points up to total family acceptance).

If any one has read my fanfic, you'd realise that my next chapter will start with Donald meeting Motoko, Naru and Kitsune. I have just one thing stopping me from writing this, though. I have absolutely no idea how they'd react to a 29-year old ex-Royal Navy CPO, particularly one who breaks out in a rash when people touch him.

I'd say that Motoko would be enraged that another male has entered the Hinata Apartments, but she might change her tune when she finds out that he's a Kendoka (of sorts)... Her pride would make her want to challenge Donald.
Naru would be angry because Keitaro hadn't informed them of these events. Keitaro would in short order be taking another flight, courtesy of Naru Airways, which would set the plot in motion.
Kitsune probably wouldn't care either way, once she found out about Donalds' allergies.
Now, Shinobu would act shyly around him, and Su would have to be restrained from prodding and poking Donald.

But still, he is not Japanese. That would bring out prejudices, even if they didn't believe they had them. While some might say that Su is a foreigner, she does not have her gender be a strike against her. You need to remember that Motoko at least considers herself traditional, and certain traditional views are not kind to foreigners. Plus, your character is the only practishioner of an untested sword style. Though he might get some brownie points for creating it. But if he is not recruiting, and the style dies with him, he won't get much respect for it.
I'm inclined to disagree, actually. You don't see Motoko behaving that way regarding Sarah - she gets pissed off at Sarah because of Sarah's bratty behavior, not for any prejudice.
In fact, the fact that Donald is such a polite, respectful, and calm fellow would score him some points in her book.
Not all Japanese - "traditional" or not - have a prejudicial dislike of gaijin.
