I agree with Threadweaver... Sump pumps are critical for most houses with basements that are in either areas prone to wet weather, or not high above waterline for area.
When one goes bad... you cannot let it go or hold off... thus why I jumped on it... I would have called yesterday, rather than wait a day, but with it being Christmas there was no point.
I remember him mentioning is own pump issues the other year... my own current area is not as bad... but we can get good rain and snowfall...
Pump already replaced, guy came in, looked, and immediately agreed the pump toasted itself and all the water was due to it not being able to be pumped out, not due to any leaks or seepage...
They had three models to offer... I debated getting a battery backup as I was going to tell them to install that, but instead went one better. I got what they class as a Ion pump, something fairly new. The sump pump looks normal, but there are two motors in it that alternate and monitor each other for breakdowns or longer than normal running. And while I'm nor currently set up to take advantage of it, there is an option to connect it to the internet and have it send status reports.
In any case, I have a few extra carpet squares, and likely will be using those to replace the ones in the one damp spot (one of the reasons I got industrial carpet squares in my basement in the first place was ease of maintenance and replacement)... other than that, a couple cardboard boxes got damp (most of my stuff was in plastic boxes, so was fine)... no other real damages occurred.
