Also, as for the car thing, Toyota did something kind of like that where they made anime girls out of the individual components of a Prius as part of an ad campaign. They even had the usual wall posters, body pillows, etc, merchandising to support it.

So basically, Japan thought of it first, and made it even weirder than you expected.
