Oh, yeah. I just remembered something.

Another thing that makes becoming a Hero in the modern age difficult hard, is the current capabilities of the age. In a time when it is sometimes necessary to measure a weapons area of effect in hundreds of miles, and it's casualties in hundreds of thousands, impressing people is going to be hard.

Furthermore, in the modern age, achievement seems more possible (it was always possible, but it didn't always seem like it). In the modern age, no matter what something is (being it running in the Olympics or shooting a bulls-eye ten times out of ten) it is understood to be possible with enough effort.

Also, the sort of things you'd need to achieve are greater. In an age where saving or changing the world is something that science has been doing for centuries, it's hard to measure up.
