Bad news guys. It seems the four episodes in 2009 are going to be David Tennant's last as the Doctor. :blue:

Man, it's too bad he's leaving. He's been my favorite doctor so far. :(

EDIT: The 2010 in the title was referring to the fact that that will be the first season without Tennant.

Only four? well... I was expecting at least a full season, anyway it was bound to happen, Tennant getting bored of the character or the BBC not wanting to renew the contract.

Lets hope the next doctor doesnt suck. (Tennant is my favorite Doctor too)

I think the news reports implied that he came to the conclusion that if he didn't walk away from the role early, he wouldn't be able to walk away from the role ever. That's what happened happened to the first guy to play Superman on TV. He was so well known in that role that he couldn't get a job doing anything else after the show was canceled.

Won't that be the twelth and final Doctor? The one to replace Tennant I mean.

Unless they pull something to give the Doctor more regenerations, which is entirely possible, and likely, the Doctor Who series is on its last legs.

Actually, the next one will be the Eleventh Doctor, with two more regenerations left.

Are you counting the regeneration he used to heal himself and create his clone? Because that still counts as one, and reduced his regenerations left the same as if he'd regenerated fully.

I just did a quick check on a number of sources of mine, and there is nothing definitive about whether The Doctor did use up one of his regenerations or not when he healed himself and transferred the remainder of the regenerative energies into his severed hand. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the people in charge of the show might not count it as a regeneration.

there's nothing in canon to say that it does

IIRC, the people in charge of the new show have declared that they're throwing out the thirteen-life limit.

Wasn't it not really a "limit," but rather the Time Lords decided not to go beyond 13 because it would affect their minds or something like that?

IIRC, I think it was the late Robert Holmes that helped come up with the 13 limit body. In the 2nd Doctor's era, it seemed to be implied that the Time Lords were immortal. Then again, in the 4th Doctor episode, "The Brain of Morbius", it was also stated by Philip Hinchcliffe, the producer of a lot of the 4th Doc's series, that all the faces seen during the psychic mind wrestling match, were all the Doctor's, implying that he was much older than he liked to make out that he was. Given that in the 7th Doctor's era that it was canon that he was 959 years old when he regenerated, and is now in his 10th body and only 900 years old? Looks like it'll be a good explanation maybe, but I don't mind seeing that artificial limit to regenerations taken off.

I wonder How they'll explain that...
It is explained in the DW:EU and other older TV episodes that the 13 regeneration limit is purely a cultural limitation and it amounts to the Time Lords running out of Will To Live so they don't bother with more regenerations.

The DW:EU puts it at ~10000 years or so for thier total lifespan. Since the Time Lords have been actual Time Lords for ~10 million years(mentioned in TV eps), and been rulers of at least the milkway galaxy and possible the universe(older DW TV eps used the word 'galaxy' where the new TV eps use 'universe' when describing the exact same thing.) for 10 billion years at the dawn of the universe(In novels, referanced to in TV eps).

Even the older Doctor Who TV eps peg the Time Lords/Gallifrey civilization at least 7 billion years or so "mastered transmit technology when the universe was half it's current size"

The concept has probably been dropped like a bad habit, but I had been looking forward to The Valeyard being referenced again.

I wonder what kind of character they'll envision the next Doctor as?

Actually I wonder what his next companion is like, are we finally getting Riversong or Jane back? Also Tennant's staying around for the 2009 schedule or isnt there going to be one.

Well I hope eventually they find a way to bring back the Doctors home planet since the Daleks keep coming back.

Also who's your favorite companion to date?

Mines Martha Jones, and Jack

I was rather hoping he'd stay around for Moffat's first season. Ah well, can't always get what we want.

Maybe he'll be Ginger. :snigger:

I think I read an interview somewhere that said Davies was thinking of hiring that Alonzo guy from the Christmas special with the Titanic as the new Doctor.

The favourites for the next Doctor are:

Paterson Joseph who has appeared in previous episodes of the show and would be the first black Doctor.

David Morrissey who appears in the next Christmas special. It will the first time the Doctor will meet himself. The Christmas Special is even called The Next Doctor.

James Nesbitt the star of Cold Feet.

John Simm the Life on Mars star.

Also Paul McGann who played the Doctor in 1996 in a one-off Doctor Who film.

well the Christmas special was particularly nice, It does give a feeling that he current doctor is getting tired of everything. I wonder how his death is gonna play out, maybe Jane will be his next companion....and they can bring back Susan.

Actually now I wouldn't mind if they made and entire season a flashback of the time war, or he went back and fixed it somehow.

Anyway Martha Jones will always be the best Companion

I'm really really hoping it's the master...

Hey, who knows, maybe the Christina (Or is it Christine? Can't remember) from the Easter Special will be the new companion... Doubt it, but one can always hope... Heres hoping the new Doctor isn't an emo... *Shudders*

Edit: For the record... Tennant wanted out cause he wanted to remember having had fun being the Doctor, not it being 'a job'...
