For those interested: Skin Game will be out on May 27th. Still so far away.:(
This is why my top use for a time machine is to make release dates.

My predictions for the next book:

Target for the heist will be the Silver Denarians in holding by the church.
Mab wants Harry on the heist because she is still holding a grudge against the folks who assaulted Arctis Tor.
Then skin game/swindle/trick will be to dupe Nicodemus into stealing the coins for Harry, who will then swipe them for Mab.

They're robbing from Hades, so don't think it's going to be the coins. Also, Nicodemus wanted help from Mab, but she's going to screw him over.

You know what, Morde posted a transcript of the first 4 chapters on DLP, so here:

Does anybody else think Harrys turning into a Warcraft mage?

How so?

He started out with fire, went onto force/arcane and is now ice/frost.

Skin Game is out. Now to barricade my door so that I can read it without distractions.

Eh, the darn bookstore is too far to justify walking to and too troublesome to find parking for if I drive... Ebook route it is, time to fire up the kindle app on my phone.

Goddamn, this feels wrong paying for electronic content when a physical version is so much superior.

Edit: I regret it already but what is done is done. I saved about a 4 bucks on gas so that is a small consolation.

Finished it a hour ago.

Well, that was a kick in the pants. One of my favorite ships became canon and sunk in the same sentence. One of my other ships is going through rough storms because of a cell phone. The Murphy train is back on track sadly enough. On the other hand, it also sets that train onto the same path as that two other trains went through in White Knight and Changes leaving Harry with a little present along the way.

Oh and one of the popular fan theories came into fruition with Butters. It had to happen sometime. It even did the whole voosh thing.

...that name is so incredibly ominous. I know that it's supposed to be a Harry and the Nickleheads reunion tour, but damn if the title doesn't scream Skin-Walker.

The dictionary is your friend:

skin game
noun
Definition of SKIN GAME
: a swindling game or trick

It really had no connection to skinwalkers. Who are pretty low priority at this moment in time, with one already defeated and 6 more in Harry's entranceway.
Huh. Well look at that. My bad.

I am so sick of the murphy-ship. It's been 15 books, and close to 15 years in the dresden world. Heck, even in the real world, it's been more than 15 years. And the ship is still stuck at an elementary school level -_- End this misery. End it now

Also, kind of disappointed with Dresden. He's got all that winter knight power but he's still struggling with guys with guns and ghouls...

Not sure on the Ghouls but I thought it was a big deal that the fae couldn't use their full power on mortals unless they were a designated enemy, like how Harry was the Winter Emissary and was getting his butt kicked by the big root thing but Murphy could kick its ass and it could only flail feebly in return.

When was that? Plus are the fomorian servitors with guns even mortals anymore? I think at this point, they'd be considered an agency of a supernatural power, much like Dresden is, but on a much lower level.

That was Summer Knight. Aurora attacks them with trees, in an S-Mart or somewhere.

Also, check the end of the Fomor section again - Harry says something like: "Maybe I'l pull your collar down and ask the cops what's wrong with your neck."

Implication being, the Fomori are no more vanilla than the Octokong.

Anyway, loved this book. It was definitely worth the long wait, and it dealt with some old stuff while providing us new stuff.

Like "Parkour!"

He's got power, but less control. Dresden even notes that going all out would endanger the civilians in the hotel. Note how much more badass his spells were in the vault.

I must admit I rather liked the Vaults owner. I'm not looking to share a cognac with him or anything but the guy seems pretty decent overall.

The ones with a job like him generally get a lot of undeserved bad press.

That isn't really it. The thing is that Dresden is deliberately holding himself back even when he is without many of the tools that he used to have. Harry even mentions that he doesn't consider magic as something that he should use willy nilly as a hammer to smite his foes (even though he could) in the vault, it is a gift that he cherishes for more than just the power it gives him.

His control has gotten MUCH better since the days where he popped a shield to block and shot wind/fire at people; he now knows how to redirect and use defense as offense (which is amazing when you consider what Dresden has been a bull in a china shop until these last few) and he even takes time now to consider his options other than "kick down the front door and blow things up". In other words, he is the hard pitcher in MLB that is learning the importance of off-speed pitches and breaking balls even though he still has the heat to throw a 100 mph fastball.

His restraint, on the other hand, is slipping a bit but he still has a hold on it primarily thanks to the Carpenters, Maggie, and his willpower.

Edit: Oh evilplusie, the Murphy thing? I got the feeling that that isn't going to end well. There are too, too many red flags. Probably going end the same way as White Knight and Changes with her giving him a final present before... you know.

Except why hold himself back against ghouls? Just blast them to bits. It's not like anyone else was in the building where they were fighting.

Well, murphy really really hasn't been my favourite character in the past 2 books. Too bitchy in the previous one and too shoe-horned in in this one.

He holds back because he doesn't yet know how far he can push before the mantle drives his primal side up and because he can't tell how much his HP and MP meters is going down until he is in the redzone. Pretty obvious since the book pretty much outlines it by showing how much Harry is unaware of his magic level in the fight during the party or how badly his body is hurt throughout the last two books.

Plus, there was the accountant guy, Harry didn't want him to die and was hamstrung carrying his dead weight for 3/4ths of the fleeing/fighting. He stepped it up once the guy go snatched so he could get to him since he knew that he had too ASAP. It was even addressed in the book with him having a flashback back to the time those twins got taken and the 8 minute thing.

As for the Murphy thing, you have to suck it up. I don't like her much either but you know that it has to get some closure before Harry can get to his OTP (which will be tragic in its own right for loads of reasons).

Y'know I used to be on the Harry/Murphy or Harry/Elaine bandwagons, but ever since Changes I've been pretty solidly in the Harry/Molly camp, because in the long term they're the only ones who're going to have similar lifespans and are actually around.

Which is the OTP? Aren't there only 4-5 books left in the series?

Honestly, it doesn't matter. The OTP in the end will be tragic under any circumstances. I am biased toward Grasshopper but shipping isn't that big a deal.

What a coincidence, I'm also for the Harry/Molly OTP. Although Molly barely appeared in this book.... -_-
