He's a freaking immortal. Does she know THIS?
Er... what? How do you mean? He's immortal in the sense that he can't die for storyline purposes, has more luck than most shonen manga heroes, and has that wizardly regeneration thing going. But immortality?

No.

He's at least 500 years old.

He's the right hand man of VLAD FUCKING DRACUL.

Edit: He's half demon, that's right. And we haven't seen demons dealt with yet in the series...I assume they're different from Fae or outsiders.

We have dealt with demons. Earlier in the series Harry summoned one up for information. Which he paid for by trading parts of his name. Turns out the thing was just playing him though.

We've had a few demons appear, yeah. But the series hasn't detailed them yet with nearly the same depth given to the Fae. For example, for the Fae we've seen half-fae, Wyldfae, explanations for both courts, meetings with various rulers of said courts, and extensive schemes involving all of the above.

For demons?

An information broker, a couple of thugs, and an off-hand comment on Kincaid being the Hellhound. There's nothing really concrete to consider there.

There is a bit more info than just a few appearances of Demons. There are several concepts from the series that are supposedly still accurate for the universe as well.

Demons don't play a primary role in the Dresdenverse because they really don't have that much depth. They don't associate with humanity beyond the occasional bargain (for information or just brute force) and aren't as human-like as the Fae/Vampires, so they haven't really got much of a place in the grand scheme of things. Plus, their place as information givers was taken by Toot Toot and the Little Folk, who ask a much smaller price for it.

Anyways, what did you guys like about the last book? I won't spoil anything for people who've not read it yet, but I've got to say the doughnut bit was hilarious :D.

I didn't entirely get it. Might have been the time of morning, but...

Finally got and read through Small Favors myself...damn good read.

Though, I can't help but wonder if Jim Butcher is a Gaara fan now, or at least paid him a touch of homage. Who else has Raccoon eyes and pulls off a giant hand to crush an enemy? Also, why do I get the feeling that Lash is not yet gone as believed to be?

I'm not sure whether to hate Butcher because he keeps dangling little hints in every novel that relate the the next one, or love him for giving us little previews to plot points in his next novel.

Personally, I'm especially looking forward to more instances of "Talk to the hand!" :snigger:

HEAVY SPOILERS

In Order of Awesome:

Nicodemus getting the shit choked out of him ***** (I literally cheered when this happened.)

Nicodemus almost shitting his pants at seeing Mouse ***** (Something that terrifies a Denarian is awesomesauce in my book.)

Uriel (who is usually seen as being a pansy) being revealed as the thing behind some of Harry's good luck AND the wetworks guy for the Bible *****

MORE SANYA ***** (What more is there to say? An Agnostic Knight of the Cross who has literally SEEN the Archangel Michael? Hell. Fuck. Yes.)

The Third Billy Goat Gruff and the "doughnut" incident ***** (Gods, I want to see more. We never see funny or laid back Fae.)

Kincaid and Murphy having a pseudo-family moment with the Archive ***** (MANLY TEARS!)

Also, MORE KINKAID ***** (He's the almost-perfect foil to Harry.)

Luccio. *** (It seems kind of, ah, pedo to me. She's so much older than Harry, mentally, and knowing the older wizards she's BOUND to have something up her sleeve -- remember, folks, it's like Thomas said: a woman will not pose half-naked for you just for kicks.)

Mab's crazy switcher-roo *** (Only because I didn't catch it and Jim hid it so well that. Just. UGH. I hate it when things come out of left-field like that. Were their actually any clues to it?)

Murphy and the whole...Fidelacchius thing. ** (I saw it coming. It could have been handled better.)

In order of Not-Awesome.

Almost no Bob-Harry Banter ----- (FORSHAME, MR. BUTCHER)

Almost no Thomas-Harry interaction ----- (DOUBLE SHAME!)

No reveal as to the exact nature of what the Outsiders the Red Court was using are ----- (I wasn't expecting it anyway, but.)

The next book doesn't come out for another year! Negative ^Nth Power. (DON'T MAKE ME WAIT NO MORES!)

Do you mean the part with the subtle little "nudge" his hand (and then spell) received when he was using them in the aquarium? Because that was Uriel. I think the only time that Lash COULD have actually been show as to being alive was when Harry's head hurt like a bitch after he compared one of the weaker Denarian's hellfire to her own.

"You don't know what you have 'til its gone?"

I think something will happen with Bob in the next novel. Luccio talked about the spirit of intellect inhabiting a skull, used by Kemmler for his dark experiments. Harry was a little put-off by the little speech and changed the subject.

I happen to agree with that assessment. :sisi: There are just bare hints and indications in every novel that he uses in his later books, and the smallest bits of writing that could be fanservice, but don't ruin the story for its glory.

On the account of Thomas, well, he was accepted back into the fold of the White Court of the Vampires after his work with Harry exposed the murders of minor magic-practicioners across the US. Associating with your technical enemy (even if you're friends or personal allies) isn't very good in a time of war between the White Council and the Red Court of Vampires.

Besides, it takes time to write 300+ pages of humor, action, mystery, espionage, deception, drama, fluff, sexual content, and horror, and make it good.

And no, Drakul =/= Dracula. Drakul = Dracula's father.

Of course he changed the subject. He already knew that about Bob, from the necomancy novel. He gave Bob back his full memories and Bob turned evil for awhile.

He totally doesn't want to admit Bob wasn't destroyed when Justin died, since really, that would look HORRIBLE for him. He already killed someone with magic... admitting he has the evil skull of dark knowledge would just look even worse.

Well, not just that. If Luccio ever found out about Bob, she would most likely tell her second-in-command, Morgan. And he would come down like a sack of bricks on Dresden, claiming that he had the final proof damning Harry Dresden on the account of being a warlock and also killing his apprentice, Molly Carpenter, on the suspicion that he was allowing or helping her to be corrupted. If they were to dig deeper and find that 1) he was the half-brother of a White Court Vampire, and 2) he was at one point possessed by the shadow of a Denarian, they would tear apart Chicago to destroy any and all traces that he could have left so as to not allow the ascension of another Kemmler. Lord knows the Merlin is just waiting for a chance to lop off Dresden's head. :unsure!:

On the other hand, if Luccio took the existence of Bob well enough, things might turn out well for Harry. But, knowing how Dresden is the Universe's bitch, it won't go that way. It won't get to the point of the situation above, but it will get pretty bad. :ph43r: :help:

You haven't seen the info on the next book, have you?

Spoiler:

Apparantly its named Turn Coat, and it starts with Morgan showing up at Harry's door asking to hide him from the Wardens.

Wow. Well, I only read books as they come out. Had a few too many conflicting "spoiler" in the past for me to take any fore-knowledge seriously.

Well, I started on book four. You can see his writing getting better as time goes by, books are getting longer too. He does a good job of writing chars that you love to hate, in fact, his overall charaterization is pretty damn good. It's interesting how Harry is always the underdog, and in book four, the Winter Queen? We don't know jack about her but we know to fear her, all from the snippets he writes.

Pretty nice series, hopefully the quality stays the same.

I happen to agree with you. Especially (sp?) on the account of Nicodemus, Lara Raith, & "Gentleman Johnnie" Marcone.

Nicodemus is still despicable on most aspects of his personality, character, and ethics/morals, but he has suprising insight and knowledge of the dark side while remaining perfectly civil (if he's not trying to kill you). :evil2: Lara Raith and Johnnie Marcone are the more neutral-dark characters, as they only act if they think you can get them something or have what they want (As shown in White Night or Dead Beat, respectively). :ph43r: :unsure!:

Pretty nice series, hopefully the quality stays the same.
But I disagree with you on the point of quality; I hope he improves. If his quality stays the same, he stagnates as a writer. So hope for improvement without loss of style. ^_^
