Earth/Minbari War Interventions

#1
Most people here with some interest in Babylon 5 fanfiction are probably aware of this common story type-A crossover occurs during the Earth/Minbari War and Earth gets a chance to fight back. Sometimes it's a good fic, other times it's just wanking off.

My own opinion is that it can be done right, though whether or not it should be is entirely up to the writer. If you consider the repercussions of these actions and do them well, it's a good story.

So, this thread isn't about whether or not it's a good idea to change the course of the Earth/Minbari War, but how to.

Crossovers, fusions, or original ideas, post them up. They can be serious, they can be silly, just post something up.

1 Cobra class Destroyer, with crew alive and well, of the Imperial Navy from 40K appears in Sol, 3 days before the Battle of the Line.

This is the not too overpowered option. While powerful, I imagine that the Cobra class destroyer could be overwhelmed by the Minbari through sheer numbers and lack of sufficient quantities of AA guns, as well as having shields that could actually be overwhelmed by concentrated firepower and armor that might be possible to pierce in time.

Of course, it is just one destroyer, barely 750 meters in length. It can't be everywhere at once, nor take on a fleet alone. The character interactions, between EarthGov, faced with Humans that are frankly barbaric to their eyes, and the poor Captain of the destroyer, struggling to do his duty to the Emperor as best as he can in a situation so far above and beyond his paygrade and field of competence it isn't even funny, would be the most interesting part of the beginning of the story.

After the Battle of the Line and the end of the E/M war, you get multiple possible story-arcs to intertwine, with engineers and scientist from the EA struggling to decipher and understand millennia of traditions and dogma of the Ad. Mech. while trying not to offend the Tech Priests that regulate their access to the tech Earth needs to stay competitive with the other powers in face of the devastation, Imperial Navy men wishing to visit the Cradle of Man in all its pure and unsoiled beauty while EarthGov worries about the impact of such xenophobic, religious and bigoted men to the traumatized population of Earth, that see the Cobra destroyer as a literal God sent miracle, and the repercussions on External Relations with Aliens species. Etc.

The overpowered option is either a Retribution or Emperor class Battleship showing up.

Uh . . . B5 seems the least compatible series for a transplant of GrimDark, like, ever.

EDIT: I'd go for something like Super Robot Wars, or Macross, personally. SRW in particular gives us things like anti-matter energy generators, Nanomachines, Zehirut Crystals, brainwave operated machinery, Swords that Cleave Evil, TROMBE and the like.

It's advanced enough to be of use against the Minbari, but not so advanced that the B5 earthlings can't understand it or reverse-engineer it. And how certain people, like Ingram Prisken or Bian Stoldark would interact with folks like Sheridan or whoever.

Well we have Divergent circle
A B5/BSG cross where the Earth/Minbari War never came to be.
the Earth task force got sidetracked before they could encounter the Minbari fleet.

Earth is busy preparing for a war with the cylons.
The Minbari are also preparing for a war after what they found on Z'ha'dum.

it's an ok fic but not a great one.

Darth Vader & Death Squadron pop up at Earth just as the Battle of the Line starts as they were leaving the Endor system.

Of course they do have the Human High Culture to uphold...

Links to a stratigic map of the B5 universe.

We've seen what would happen with a Soviet based earthgov . Admittedly they were given a hell of a tech boost.

What would an earth gov based off Germany winning WW2 and eventually conquering the world do? And just to make it interesting the leader of the 1000 year Reich is Hitlers brain kept alive in a glass case.

Changes from canon B5 universe.
The Reich (earthgov) much more aggressive and xenophobic but not to the point of stupidity. They only try to bully/enslave/exterminate those weaker than them while using an elaborate system of treaties to attemp to prevent others from uniting against them.

The earth due to being united and ruled by a single man for so long has become more efficient but less creative since you don't have the competition having 200 different countries provides. The years since the discovery of extraterrestrial life however have spurred research forward in a desperate attempt to arm themselves against possible attack.

The Russians have become basically a slave race controlled first by labor camps and guards then by mind wipes and mental programming. Making them perfect for dangerous jobs, and suicidal endeavors.

Psycorp doesn't change much. All telepaths are required to join the psycorp. Those who refuse are mind wiped and receive mental reprogramming. The breeding system continues as before but is more widespread. Their public image is that of a police force rather than a haven for telepaths. "No criminal can escape the Psycorp."

The war begins
The War begins as normal with 1 major change. The mission into Mimbari space is a 5 ship fleet and when the mimbari advance with gun ports open. The fire from the Earth ships succeeds in not only killing Dukhat but destroying the ship killing Delenn and the entire council as well. The Mimbari react in much the same way as in canon. systematic genocide. Pausing only to select a new council.

The other races remain neutral with the Narns running guns.

The war in it's early stages favors the Mimbari completely. The Reich even with more ships than Earthgov is outmatched technologically. The only effective tactics are point blank fire and ramming.

With the imminent destruction of all human life becoming apparent, the psycorp reveals it's latest efforts in mental programming, russian suicide pilots. Several shipyards begin producing the relatively cheap high speed craft that amount to little more than engine cockpit and nuclear bomb.

Their initial use provides Earth with it's first victory. 3 enemy capital ships and 6 escorts destroyed with no survivors. At the cost of some 50 russian suicide sleds (RSS's). During the second and much stronger Mimbari attack the Reich again manages to destroy several cruisers before being destroyed themselves.

Hitler purchases a more precise jumpgate technology from the Narns but it will be at least a year before the Reich can begin full production and installation of a human tech equivalent. He orders manufacturing increased on the RSS's as well as sending all explorer fleets into mimbari territory to scout out their worlds. Only 2 return with the location of 2 separate lightly developed Mimbari held systems.

The Mimbari quickly develop fighter tactics to deal with the RSS's. These tactics usually result in the loss of at least 1 fighter as the RSS detonates when it receives severe damage but they are more than willing to die to protect their ship. A n overwhelming barrage of missiles become necessary to destroy a single capital ship and becomes almost impossible to destroy 2 ships and fighter wings working together. The Riech responds by producing th RSS Mk2 installing 2 smaller Nuclear missiles one fore and 1 aft of the RSS. These are set to a time delay and are usually successful in clearing the way through the fighter screen for an attack on the Mimbari ships.

The surviving explorer ships are sent out again each with several dozen RSS's in tow opening a gate over the 2 known worlds and unleashing hell onto the planets below. The war had come home for the Mimbari.

As a little joke, my friends and I worked out a scenario, more of a 'wouldn't that be cool?'. It exists as a collection of notes, names of ships and key personnel, nothing written, though.

It had an entire pre-Ruusan Galactic Republic fleet dumped into Earth Alliance space in the years leading up to the war. They proceeded to turn the Earth Alliance into a mini-Republic of sorts then started a war with the Minbari and tried very hard to drive them back into the stone age/extinction (whatever was more convenient).

The reasoning: the Republic wasn't exactly the soft, decadent force of the prequels and they were perfectly willing to go around doing preemptive strikes, making examples of and committing genocide of 'threatening' and 'aggressive' species (there are several examples of the Republic doing exactly that).

Plus, it made for a nice break of pace from the usual, Galactic Empire shows up and stomps on anyone they don't like. And you get to have ships painted in red! Also, prettier than the buckets used by the Earth Alliance at the time (and, oddly enough, much, much smaller).

Come to think of it, I'd never seen a crossover involving the Galactic Republic on the Star Wars side. It's always Empire, Empire, Empire ... occasionally New Republic, but never the Old Republic at it's peak.

I do have a non-serious one-shot I'd written for a Star Wars d20 campaign as a 'where are they now?' thing and drawn from one of the paths they could have taken (I let them take the other one, after they blew themselves up), but it's centered on a single Imperial NPC that played the part of a villain for awhile, before turning into an NPC hero ... but I'm not sure if it's good enough to post here.

A spacial distortion takes a chunk of Revans fleet to Earth, namely those loyal to him just as the Republic ambush begins. Unfortunately, without Malak having someone to betray the Republic is pretty much screwed.

However, Revan and his Sith find themselves in the system about the same time that the E/M war starts...

"Valen's Second Law," answered the Vorlon, before it turned and left the room.

Once again, mumurings broke out, as the meaning of Valen's Second Law had been a mystery for over a thousand years. Now, however, it became clear.

"Minbari do not endanger Ryou-ou-ki's carrot supply," muttered Delenn, quoting the law whose wisdom had only now revealed itself.

I've been digging through my documents folder (which, at 14 GB is not an easy task) and found the opening of a story my friends challenged me to. Did it, lost interest soon after writing the opening and a scene or two ... so did my friends and it's been lying buried on my hard-drive for some time.

It seems that my memory is faulty, though and the above idea I'd posted isn't the real thing. The actual opening is present here and follows a different pattern.

As a warning, it's a Star Wars crossover and, as is usual for me, starts at the ending rather than the beginning of it all. Similarly, it's more concerned with the exploration of the cultural and social architecture of the Galactic Republic to the detriment of everything except, perhaps, the plot.

Pride was something Tayd Idarian could understand. After all, he was of the Core Worlds, a Coruscani and an officer of the Galactic Republic. Pride was something he understood very well, like most citizens of that Republic that had existed for a thousand generations.

He could understand the depths it could drive people to, the self-destructive, slippery slope that proud civilizations set themselves upon.

But still, he would never part with his pride for anything. As a native of a world that had united the galaxy. An officer of that power and a man of the Core Worlds from which galactic civilization emerged, pride was very much the core of his being.

So, he could understand the defiant stances of the Minbari representatives as they sought desperately to cling to what little pride they had left. Their proud Federation was gone, their fleet shattered, their homeworld reduced to rubble and their civilization had nearly been extinguished in the short and vicious war.

And Tayd pitied them. They couldn't even stand there and say: 'we fought well'. Because they didn't. The Republic fleets, Tayd's among them, crashed upon the Minbari Federation like a tide. Each Republic ship capable of outfighting a dozen Minbari warships and for each warship the Minbari fielded the Republic sent twenty.

They couldn't stand there and say: 'we met our fate calmly and with dignity' because, at the end, even the proud Minbari begged for mercy as the horrifying green lances of death began to rain upon their cities leaving ashes and dust in their wake.

All they could do is stand there, before the Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic, the Grand Master of the Jedi Order, the President of the Earth Alliance and the representatives of every power in known space and bear their shame with what little dignity they had left.

Tayd did, indeed pity them and it only seemed to make the hate in the eyes of the Minbari representatives worse when they glanced at him. Tayd Bloodletter they called him, for his crimson uniform and crimson ships that looked as if they were covered with blood. Butcher of Minbar they named him, for his was the voice that ordered the start of the orbital bombardment of a beaten enemy.

Tayd accepted it simply. He was an officer, sworn to protect the Republic, the people and civilization. The Minbari were barbarians, willing to commit genocide over nothing at all. That was all there was to it. Admiral Tayd Idarian had fulfilled his orders to the letter, did his duty proudly and the lives of Minbari, some tiny, young, insignificant species didn't matter to him at all.

It was hard to comprehend anyway. The Earth Alliance ambassador, Victor Tenenbaum had once remarked that one of Earth's tyrants had said: 'a single death is a tragedy, a million: a statistic'. Tayd didn't care for the Minbari because they were just numbers to him and he didn't know whether to feel disgusted with himself or relieved that he couldn't comprehend the totality of his actions.

The cold, refined tones of the Supreme Chancellor attracted his attention. She was outlining the terms the Republic had set forth for the Minbari Federation. It was a mere formality, an act of magnanimity on the side of the Republic because they didn't need to notify the Minbari of the terms. Still, the Republic did so, politely, formally, parading the remnants of Minbari government before the representatives and exposing their defeat and shame for all to see.

Even the Supreme Chancellor was different, standing in the robes of her office. Voice like the eternal winter of Ziost and features cold and hard as if cast from durasteel. There was no trace of the animated, idealistic Zianna Dall in that speaker. There was only the Supreme Chancellor, the voice of a thousand generations of civilization and the speaker in the name of the Senate and the People of the Galactic Republic.

Arrogance and pride beyond what the Minbari could comprehend, but unlike that of the Minbari, earned and justified as none could stand against the might of the Republic. In twenty five thousand years many tried, none succeeded.

He caught her glancing in his direction, but Tayd didn't allow himself to respond, merely sending wordless encouragement with his eyes, a trick Coruscani high society had mastered a long time ago.

Tayd returned to watching the faces of the Minbari as the terms were outlined to them. Nothing less than the end of the Minbari Federation. They were defeated, even if their stances were as tall and proud as they had been when they entered the chamber.

He didn't feel guilt for his actions. Zianna did, but Tayd didn't.

All had gone according to plan, the war had kicked the Republic into action, started the inexorable shift that would end with the painful reforms that would allow the Galactic Republic to reverse the slow death that had been plaguing it since the Ruusan Reformation. The Earth Alliance had stepped forward and requested membership in the Republic and a new galaxy of opportunity had been opened.

And if a single, proud, arrogant species had to pay the price for the salvation of everything Tayd stood for, then he would gladly butcher every last Minbari with his own two hands. And the soldiers and officers of the Galactic Republic would be there, by his side the whole way.

For the pride of the Coruscani and the Core Worlds. For the honour of the Starfleet and the Army. For the legacy of a twenty five thousand years of unity and justice.

Tayd's crimes were great. Conspiring to drag the Republic into a war. Engineering said war's beginning. Bringing an entire species to the brink of extinction. Bombardment of civilian and defenceless targets. But, for the pride and the joy of seeing the Republic he loved survive, he would do it all over again without hesitation.

No, Tayd Idarian felt no guilt at all. For as long as the Bendu circle on the flags of the Galactic Republic flew high, Tayd wouldn't feel guilty in the slightest.

Nice lead in. If you plan to continue it, I can see a threeway between the Republic, Shadows, Vorlons and possibly the Thirdspace aliens (Sinhindrea according to fandom).

Given that the Minbari stealth doesn't effect the ability to see it, I've always wondered how a laser based detection system would work. Operating on the assumption that the LIDAR of Space Above and Beyond is just such a system I've always wanted to see just how B5 would play out if S:AB was shoehorned in as the past of the Earth Alliance.

The fact that the humans would have what appears to be a real-space FTL that can fit in a fighter is just cake.

Not entirely up to date with the Star Wars EU, but I'm not sure that the Mimbari aren't at least equal to the Old Republic in tech.

Equal in tech maybe, but what about numbers?

And if we are talking about weapons of mass destruction....

Sun Crusher? (Small ship with hyperspace capability and a missle that causes stars to go supernova)
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sun_Crusher

Death Star (Planet Destroyer): Dun really need to explain do I? ;p

World Devastator: Planetary Strip-Mining Factories http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/World_Devastator

Galaxy Gun: A rather unfair weapon that fires projectiles capable of traversing hyperspace and destroying entire planets.

.... Bah. Just look at the superweapons list http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Superweapons

:eek:t:
Can you explain why they need a colossal thing like the Galaxy Gun to fire a particle disintegrator warhead? It's firing self-propelled, self-guiding missiles that jump through hyperspace. It looks like all you would need is a computer to set the target, activate it, and off it goes.

Not even close. A single Imperator class star destroyer, that's the ship chasing Leia in A New Hope, has fire power equivalent to a Shadow planet killer. There isn't a single ship, even from the first ones, capable of going against an equal sized SW vessel.

The only ships the first ones have that can are the planet killers. Those ships though are a lot bigger than an SW ship with equal fire power.
Planet Killers is a great page that has an easy to understand, relatively, explanation for most SciFi WMD.

@ Delusionist there has never been one other than "it looks cool".

It depends on which sources you pick. Star Wars' firepower is all over the place. You can give them everything from low kilotons to triple-digit gigatons (or more) per turbolaser shot. Though, the most common number used by Star Wars fans is 200 GT per heavy turbolaser bolt. A Star Destroyer has six quadruple-mounts of those. Later models have more.

However, weapons do very little next to acceleration. Babylon five has ships with accelerations in single or double digit g. Star Wars, on the other hand, has capital ships pulling three thousand g when necessary. The Republic, in Babylon Five would, technology-wise, count as a Middle-born race with an industrial capacity nothing short of astonishing. They'd have a lot of trouble with Shadows and Vorlons (who have faster ships that may or may not be susceptible to the heavy jamming Star Wars normally uses), but they'd be fully able to swarm them, eventually. It'd be a bloody, bloody war, but one that they might win. The Republic has several million worlds, after all ... what's one or a hundred in that number?

It's the Empire, they build everything big.

Though, seriously, control. If you have only one station that's capable of firing those things (and it's heavily defended) than there's no chance of any other idiot getting his hands on the warheads and blowing up planets as he wished.

EDIT: It seems I was beaten to the punch. Oh, well.

* 2 x Dual Heavy ion cannon turrets
* 4 x Dual Arbiter Kinetic Burst Cannon turrets
* 4 x Pulsar turrets

About 1km long

Basically Death with Engines attached. Not to mention Hyperdrive too...

Also Ion Cannon entry:
Through the use of an accelerated particle beam, the ion cannon is capable of penetrating even the toughest of capital ship armour.
Sup bitches, its not that puny EMP like Ion shot. This mother fucker is going to TEAR through you.
