Ok, the raws for the DVD are out (TT and Nyaatorrents). Expect the Blue Rei in a couple of days and subs maybe before that.

Waiting for subs.

Yousei raw desyncs around half way through the movie, anisab dvd rip is on queue for download and should be done by the time I get up, barring power hiccups/outages.

It would be nice if we don't have to hide/color our text while we talk about the movie.

English chatter was earbleedingly bad, engrish I can recognize, but the talk in the american base and Mari's phone talk were atrocious, those scenes need subtitles badly >.>.

While I was watching the aquarium part Kaji mentions that all of the seas are red (lcl?) and therefore devoid of sea life, while white clouds are in the background, if I remember right, clouds form over seas and yet the rain and clouds are normal, while seas are not, a bit of a plot hole there or something else?

Ever hear of a Red tide? It's not just a nickname for a a Soviet invasion force.

There are subs out there, but they're sinked to 2.0, not 2.22. I'm waiting for a decent set because I got a bloody download cap.

It might not be a plot hole clouds are formed by evaporation and the coloring whatever it is, would stay in the oceans as the clouds formed. (the oceans are more than likely lcl/water mix, allowing evaporation to continue.)

These match with anisab dvd raw, and have the added scenes translated, not like they had much there anyway, it's the best translation so far but it reads as very awkward most of the time, must be how odd and not quite correct it is, oh well, there will be better subs in a few days, hopefully.

Gotta love awkward music placement in the Rebuild movies, dummy plug scene is seriously clashing with it's new score.

Which was kinda deliberate.... considering the song is "Today is the day to say Goodbye". It's a repeat of the happy suicide song mood whiplash effect from the original EoE.

Subs are sync'd, I just watched the Anisub release with em. Quality's good. There're moments in there where you will shi9t yourself at the awesomeness. It's like Eva Toppa Gurren Lavangelion or something...

That's not exactly a good thing to some of us, especially those like me who hated Gurren Lagaan.

~Trust me, it's in a good way.

Rather than wimping out and screaming about how he's going to die, Shinji takes a level in badass and Makes Unit 01 move by sheer force of will alone, eyes glowing madly, bashing his way through the Angel to Rei.

Yeah, his goal there was completely opposite to his goal back in NGE, there he wanted to save everyone ("or everyone will die, so please, MOVE!") while here he is "Rip and tear" to save Rei alone, which results with quite awesome non-berserking Eva 01 owning Zeruel (or whichever name was it) with awesome eye beams.

Did Shinji break out of his cage after dummy plug incident in manga as well, or was he threatening to rip n tear while being in the cage, or did he break out and started stomping like he did in the movie? He at least tried to hold back Unit 04 here, until it deployed the things, while in the series he didn't even try anything, in both cases he was pretty much acting a bit stupidly, just rip and tear and rescue the pilot, but noooo, he has to go all fatalistic and useless and quit the moment he sees the plug trapped.

The awesome detected in this thread makes me wish to rape my nets for a faster download speed.

It'd be nice if they'd, oh, even release 2.0 here in the US so those who want to see it don't have to pirate it, let alone 2.22.

I can't believe that demand is that low...

Downloaded in 10min... Fiber Optics FTW!

Now about the film:
The similarities between Mari after the Angel fight and Misato after 2I where a nice touch (and her lines... something ominous this way comes). The scenes in the water treatment plant were hilarious, especially Pen2. But the fight... ye Gods, the fight was awesome, Dartz is right. There is awesome, then there's this.

As for the soundtrack, I recommend hearing the album and having the handbook thingy with the lyrics at hand. Makes the movie much more, mmm.... violent.
Also, Armageddon will come at the sound of children singing.

Yeah just watched it. It didn't blow me away as much as Evangelion 1.0 did. Evangelion has always been a love/hate relationship with me. I loved it since it was so visionary for its time. I hated it for its bloated plot. I felt Evangelion 1.0 was awesome for its nice, trim, neat plot, and is the reason why I prefer it over Evangelion 1.11. Evangelion 2.22 has a bloated plot. There are like what, 4 angels in this movie? 3 was pushing it for 1.0. And how many new characters are introduced that we should care about?

Everyone likes the new pilot that shows up. I was rather unimpressed with her. I dunno how to really discuss exactly WHY I dislike this new character without spoilers except to say that she almost serves NO point in the plot whatsoever. The only reason she's there is so that Asuka can go and do other things while keeping the plot can stay on its rails. I dunno, I suppose the above comments are borderline spoilerish, so I'll stop there.

Oh and the Engrish. Oh, and the technobabble. Oh, the Shikinami Asuka Langley...

The movie wasn't all bad though. I loved the character development. Shinji isn't as emo as he could be and totally didn't get on my nerves. Asuka isn't a heartless bitch, and is pretty likable in this incarnation. Gendo is still a heartless bitch, so all is right with the world ^_^

The action scenes were pretty awesome as well. And I think the final fight was handled MUCH better than it was in the TV series. Rewatching that old scene in 2010 just makes me cringe and twitch.

Mari really hasn't been on screen long enough for any kind of accurate read on her character to be given. As a pilot, she reminds me of Asuka from the original NGE, more dependent on sheer determination than any actual skill.

Asuka Shinikami, however, may actually be the elite pilot she thinks she is. She's also more mature than Asuka Sohryu, at least to the point where she's willing to admit that she has personal problems (Although the movie ends before we get to see if she's planning to do anything about them).

A lot of people noticed this. Maybe because it is composed by the same guy? Or Anno wanted to troll us (again). It wouldn't surprise me if a couple of songs are from Nadia.

And one minor thing I noticed. During the nude-Asuka incident, has somebody else noticed the calendar in the wall? If it is correct, the movies take place either in 2018 or 2024...

Actually I found that ALL the character's were much more functional humans. Right down to Gendo himself, especially at the dinner scene with Rei. Asuka is still the quick fire, but some of the heat has been moved. And Shinji... well Shinji's real difference is that some how where in the old series event after event conspired to smack him down for EVER having ANYTHING resembling a spine, in this new continuity hes very much the same person except every event has been subtly tweaked to bolster him into becoming the awesome person that he always had the potential to be.

That to me is the real triumph of this movie continuity.

Also...

(Spoilerish... kinda...)

The thing that Karu said at the end. It makes me think that maybe just maybe... this movie continuity... and the original series continuity... are cannon to each other. Both having actually happened. If so, I'll say they must have had some time reading "Retake" (a rather impressive Eva dojin, who ever hasn't read it should, though it does have a sex scene or two...).

It's my firm belief that KareKano has the same basic message as the Evangelion TV series, only told much MUCH better. Maybe not with as many bells and whistles, but I thought its message was clearer and more elegantly displayed.

And KareKano had an awesome OST! Everything should have more Emperor Concerto.

Holy flying Lord of Fuck that last fight was epic

The original Zeruel fight was already an awesome fight by all accounts, but this tops it on so many levels.

I mean...wow. Just...wow. Wow. Holy fuck, wow.

:hail:

But overall, was the point of Mari just to stand in for Asuka so that she gets maimed in Eva-03 rather than Toji? If so...I'm not so sure about it.

Really, Mari's character seems so half-baked and her presence is so forced. I mean, she just <s>parachutes in</s> shows up and hijacks Eva-02 and even after doing her whole ZA BEASTO thing, she still gets beaten rather soundly.

If not for the fact that she's cute, voiced by Maaya Sakamoto, and is delightfully quirky with the whole singing to herself before going into battle, I wouldn't be sure what to think of her.

That aside...while I'm not much of an Evangelion fan, I enjoyed it. Insanely good animation, particularly with the 1080p Blu-Ray rip I got, combined with some interesting changes from the original? I'm in.

Oh, I'm not complaining. That I instantly recognized the tunes ten years after I head them is telling something.^_^

Evangelion and Kare Kano are both coming of age story, but that's what every Gainax show is, really. Though Arima and Miyazawa can be seen as drastically toned down version of Shinji and Asuka.

It's really too soon to decide whether Mari is a pointless addition to the cast for now, but she'd been entertaining at least. She seems to be a mix of an adrenaline junkie, only piloting an Eva because it gives her the biggest rush ever and James Bond, what with infiltrating Nerv, hijacking the EVA-02 and knowing the secret mode.

Also, Anno clearly threw away the creepy!Rei angle that completely bombed in the series and fully adopted the moemoe!Rei that the fans were loudly calling for. I'm not a big fan of Rei, but she was genuinely endearing in this.
