FanFiction.NET issues

According to an author I follow (via PM), ffnet won't let him upload a new chapter, despite multiple tries. Also, the initial try _did_ seem to go through, to the point that I got an email informing me of an update, and the author's ffnet page showing an Update date of Sept. 2.

Anyone else notice this, or anything like this?

Hmmm... to be honest, I've had more issues here with the forum upgrades than the FF.NET changes.

But in regards to FF.NET I have noticed a drop off or frequency but not a complete stop to updates on FF.NET in the last day or so by way of the feeds I monitor.

And I am seeing these in the site. So some updates are showing and getting through.

I assumed the drop off was fallout of people waiting out the problems of the last several days with the site preventing proper login's, which did for a small time cause a near halt to the updates in the feed system.

You might want to have your friend flush his internet caches and try again. it could be there is something getting borked or otherwise locked.

da_fox2279': If you got an alert then the problem might simply be a delay before the chapter shows publicly. Tell your friend not to delete the chapter and try again but instead, post the chapter. If it show in his/her Manage Story settings then leave it at that; it should appear publicly eventually even if takes hours or a day.

EDIT: Seriously, the forum eating my posts when I try to reply to a post is getting ******* annoying... As I said, the author attempted to post the chapter several times, but FFnet wouldn't let them after the first upload. And the Authors Page shows the fic having been updated, despite only showing the incorrect number of chapters. The new one is not there.

@da_fox2279

FYI : Forum toasted your response.

I've been having to double check every post I make because of the upgrade doing that to my posts as well... Seemingly the upgrade and IE do not get along well in regards to whatever mucking around was done with the post screen.

I'm hoping the fix it soon.

Surprised you use IE, I would have thought it'd be less secure than Firefox?

I use IE as my primary browser as it both crashes less and gives me less grief than the dreaded FireFox, which I refuse to install on my systems.

I use Avant browser as an emergency backup and test browser as Avant actually has built into it the browser engines of IE, Chrome and the dreaded FireFox. But I do not use that browser for general use for several reasons.

You guys might want to consider installing the Lazarus plugin for your browsers, so you can recover posts easily.

I think I've mentioned this before, but why is it that you have to constantly accept FFN's guidelines every time you want to publish a new story? They don't update them every 2-3 days!

FFN never give much thought to human considerations. It would not be difficult for them to only show it when it changes. The truth is that Xing, the owner, has distanced himself so far from people that he does not include them in his thoughts and plans.

I find it annoying too. Personally, I think its just their way of acknowledging that fanfics are a legal grey area... <_<

Considering how many people, despite that, that go against them, it is clearly needed.

So tangentially related. At least, it didn't seem worth making a new thread for this.

Made an AO3 account.

There is actually a wait list from the time you submit your e-mail to the time you can actually create your account which is... curious.

The FF.Net interface is better for uploading stories. AO3 just gives you lots of blank spaces to fill which I imagine can easily lead to some mistakes. Also, you can't upload a file which I found odd. I had to copy/paste it. Apparently there is an option to upload it from another URL but it only works well with Livejournal. Haven't tried it yet.

On the plus side, I can actually put more than one space which is insanely refreshing.

Yes, I have too and posted my first short story at AO3 today. I also pasted it in but I thought I saw an import button somewhere...
The display is quite configurable  - much more so than FFN so those options need a lot of exploring. It will take me some time to adjust.

FYI: been suddenly getting sporadic 503 errors and slowdowns on FanFiction.NET pages... may go away, may get worse. Figured would mention it.

For the moment at least, the feeds seem to be working ok, implying main site functionality intact.

I had one brief 503 error yesterday or the day before on the home page. When I tried again it was okay.
Don't know about today because I had bad connectivity. In the past I've had many times when I lost connectivity to the net for an hour so and could never trace the problem. I switched modems and pc and still got the error. ISP denied any problem. Been alright this year until this morning. Damnest thing. I could google. I could get lots of websites. But many were 'can't connect with server' - BBC news, Daily Telegraph, FFN, and others, plus my email was down. How can only part of the web be unavailable? I even wondered if it was a major cyber attack on the web but googling for news in the last 24 hours showed no major problems like that.
[sigh] Anyway, just ranting because, I couldn't confirm 503 error today because of connection errors! Some days it seems like nothing works. Anyway, finally got my emails and connection back.

FYI: I cannot confirm it exactly, but I have my suspicions the ATOM/RSS feeds on FanFiction.NET are not entirely working at the moment, each of the last two times I've attempted to refresh them today I've only seen a handful of updates. This last time Mss Effect category had 22 of only some 30 total FanFiction NET updates across all feeds monitored, which seems off.

While I know not many use the feed system to track updates, if that is down, even partially, it may well be possible the email alert systems are similarly affected.

For the past week or so myself and many others have been unable to see any reviews. If you read the Help forum you'll find dozens of threads asking why they can't read reviews.

Must be browser specific, I can see them just fine.

Not that my opinion on browsers seems to matter...

I've noticed it is not an issue with all reviews, just new ones. I've left 2 reviews on stories that do not moderate them but they have not shown up in the last week. I've seen review counts go up but when I click to read the reviews it will only show the ones from a week ago and older. And whatever is wrong I think it is FFN side cuz it is a problem with firefox, chrome and IE.

I stand corrected... I thought from your prior post it was *all* reviews.

I just now checked one I know I had left a simple one line review for, and it is missing.

Does not overly bother me much, but it does explain one author complaining to me on getting so few reviews since Christmas...

Pretty much. I updated a story a couple of days ago. I get review notifications and I see the counter going up but when I click to see them they just don't show up.
