Misato Katsuragi was not happy with the information that this morning’s briefing was currently relaying.
Yes, it was politically awkward that the last mission against the Angels had required the use of an N² mine, but these extraterrestrials were a challenging foe. There was no set pattern for what the Angels looked like, no indication of what their strengths and weaknesses would be.
It was the perfect example of why tactical flexibility was important.
It was also the same argument that the UN used for having a “proper military presence on the battlefield” during missions.
“There’s a reason why we have shelters in Tokyo-3!” the Captain countered. “This isn’t the same as being taken out by a stray mortar shell, the first Angel self-destructed and took our a city block! Who knows what the next one might be able to do?!”
“That’s not what they’re suggesting,” Gendo Ikari said, unimpressed with the edict. “They learned of the two successful missions where Pilot Ikari was in the entry plug with another person. They believe that it may be possible to pilot with a ‘command presence’ in the Evangelions and have requested that we perform tests to determine the feasibility and send them the full data. Acceptance of this request is tied to the next round of funding.”
The room fell silent as they processed this. The decision to withhold funding would cripple both the HIP and the defence of Tokyo-3. They could understand why Commander Ikari hadn’t just rejected it out of hand.
“So what do we do now?” Misato asked. “Set up a sync test with a pilot and someone else in the entry plug?”
“Yes,” the bearded man said. “If the UN wants a command presence, then they shall have one. You, Captain Katsuragi, will be the first test with Pilot Sohryu.”
“Why Asuka?”
“We don’t have a plug suit in your size, and we don’t want Shinji to get distracted by you in a swimsuit,” Ritsuko Akagi replied. “You will be quite close for the duration of the test.”
“Probably for the best,” the purple-haired woman conceded. As much as she had started to like Shinji during his time in Tokyo-3, this did have the potential to make her home life much more complicated. At least with Asuka, there wouldn’t be much more awkwardness.
There was a short pause before Misato spoke again. “So, when are we doing these tests?”
“This afternoon,” the Commander answered. “If you cannot synchronise with Pilot Sohryu, we will try with again Rei and, as a last resort, Pilot Ikari. After the tests are completed, we will send off the data for them to analyse while we continue our mission.”
“Understood.”
