That's an interesting article. I understand his point that aspects of each will attract for different reasons, and I suppose weaknesses in character development are part of why both have so much fanfiction about them.

That's pretty much the whole reason behind fanfiction, people were unhappy with something that happened in the series and wanted to change it or wanted the character to make a different choice at some point or another. That's why you rarely see fanfiction for shows that have good, solid, endings that tie up all the loose ends, because there are fewer things you can do with those. Also, shows that end with everything being destroyed or something similiar usually don't have much for them either (as in RahXephon, Texhnolyze, and that type of show (Eva is the obvious exception due to it's massive popularity)) as it's kind of hard to follow that and it sometimes feels almost wrong to change things after such an ending.

Well, a series like RahXephon, continuation fics are semi-out of the question. I mean, there isn't much you can change with it and so forth unless you want something sappy.

Still, there are a lot of 'alternatives' that could be explored with a series like RahXephon. And this is true for a lot of series that had 'complete' endings. I mean, Cowboy Bebop had a pretty solid ending, yet that doesn't stop people from 'changing it' (which is why they are almost ALL the same. <_<) or simply put, AU fics. Of course one thing about Eva, Anno did give us a glimpse into an alternate path at the end of the series (before the mind **** movies). Not to mention, alternate series like Girlfriend of Steel added to the mix. Obviously, the fans responded with the fanfics. :p

The fun part about Cowboy Bebop is that you don't know in the end if Spike is dead or not. That opens a few opportunities, and you can always write a new adventure that fits somehow in there...

The resemblance to Eva doesn't help it either. Seems that there were quite a few shows that "inspired" from Eva...

He really is. It's annoying when people insist that there's room to understand he's not due to it never explicitly stated, because the hints they drop over the course of the final ending make it pretty clear.

Well, the falling star for the most part point to a dead Spike. And really, that is an appropriate ending for a man who had 'one eye on the past, and one eye to the present. Neither one looking to his future.

But I admit, I still like a few of the "Spike LIVES!" stories. Even though they are repetitive and redundent. Why? Even I like a 'happy' ending a few times. Even if that is NOT the way canon Cowboy Bebop should end. Not to mention, being a fan of Spike/Faye. Can't have this pairing if he's dead. :p

By the end of the Cowboy Behop show, Spike has more or less lost everything he had ever held dear to him, so his death would seem like a most fitting ending, I mean, its not like he really has much to live on for after that fight. Plus, there wasn't really sufficient interaction between Spike and Faye to suggest some sort of pairing... :(

I wouldn't be so sure, granted there are numerous reasons for him to be dead and everything at the end points to that but...

DT: Have you received any negative feedback for Spike's death?

W: I've never officially said that he's died. At this point, I can tell you that I'm not sure if he's alive or dead. I think probably rather than being yelled at for killing Spike, I think ... people are more upset that I might make a continuation.
Where W is from Watanabe, from Shinichiro Watanabe, the director of the series...

Most people see that, and miss the connections to Space Runaway Ideon.

Although, RahXephon ended way better than both of those.

*Nods*

Spoiler: He ended up reconstructing reality, but it was all for the best after all he got a wife and a kid that way...

By the way, if you want to see Eva "clones" check Fafner in the Azure...

Yeah. It is a great ending in the happy go lucky sense. Though I'm personally not a fan of it. Funny since I usually like 'happy endings'. :p Though it has nothing to do with it being happy as it does with who he ends up with. [spoilers! Highlight to read]Haruka Shitow was shown at first as a kickass taken no prisoner independent kind of woman. And, I was a semi-supporter of her at first. But then, she degraded into a whiny "I can't live without him! WAHHHHHHHHHH!" Kind of woman. I mean, what the hell?![/spoilers] Given my love of alternate endings/pairings/etc, I'd just love to see fics that explored other avenues. Of course, I'm also not surprised that there aren't a lot of them out there in the first place. -_-

Not to mention, size of a fandom also helps too. I mean, does anyone here think that Naruto fandom would be as big as it is if it wasn't due to its massive popularity here and elsewhere? Granted, quality of most of said fics are non-existant in general, but you never have to worry about there being a darth of fics there either. <_<

I hate anime that does that... remembers me of Tattoon Master.

Of course you have to wory about other facts, like finding good fics among the mass of... :headbanger:
