I dunno why, but that just feels out of the scope of perception. I mean, I might be able to accept that Tsuruko can't cook as some fanon seems to suggest, much like her sister, but such possibilities seem, I dunno, just wrong. And Keitaro being her mentor, that's laughable! He wouldn't know enough about the art of seduction to turn on a succubus. And I don't even want to think about how he learned what he supposedly learned. Personally, if he just played into the Indiana Jones characterization of archaeologists, that'd be his best chance, aside from pity sex for seeming to have had his luck run dry.

Ahhh... you missed the point. this was not an independant idea of mine per se, but a possible fleshing out or example of one posed by Keitaro being raised by 'uncle Rocco'. This character is used in his crack fic in the NGE section. I had made a passing comment in that thread that it made me think on him raising Keitaro. However... Raa's #3 above made me add that alternative scenario.
Oh... as for canon Keitaro serving as mentor. I should point out one fic that does that well for Motoko and him. 'Steel Rose' by Random1377. I am unaware of one for Tsuruko and him though.

Just chatting with H-man and this potential idea emerged.
Basically, rather than try to keep the promise, Keitaro's actually decided to break it by the time he goes to the Hinata-sou and wants to tell the girl of his memories that he doesn't want to fulfill it.
His attitude is more along the lines of "That was just a childhood promise. I'm a grown man. Why should I bother pursuing it when there's other people around me? I'll make it to Toudai not for a promise, but because it's my own want!"
And because this Keitaro is more of a realist, he might wait to be introduced to the residents and his reaction to Kitsune's flirting might be a little more like this:
"Well, if that's how you feel, Miss Konno, then I'd be glad to service you sexually," Keitaro replied, though he was struggling to keep his voice calm as his heart raced. "Is this a standard part of the tenancy agreement?"
Since Keitaro's not been branded a pervert, there's a chance that the others might warm up to him earlier, including Naru.

One of the turning points in the early discussions on him staying is they thought him a todai student already, even after learning the truth, it was agreed he had to get in.
Additionally, it was not really his actions that got him branded a pervert by Naru/Motoko, it was the fact he was a man, thus implying he is a pervert sight unseen.

That would certainly be an interesting spin, but since his promise was one of the ways that the girls could find something redeeming about him, it might take some of them even more time to warm up to him.

What if Kanako went to the Inn before Keitaro?
I'm thinking that either Granny Hina decided to send Kanako to prepare the residents for Keitaro's arrival.
That way, the don't complain so vigorously.
That has the added bonus/danger of Kanako bigging up Keitaro to the girls. Which could lead to disappointment when he arrives like in canon.
Or perhaps Kanako learns that the "promise girl" is staying at the Inn and that Keitaro is going to be taking over, which leads her to take the initiative and go there?
Kanako can't possibly allow just anyone to have her brother.
Assuming that she could ever be convinced to let anyone other than herself have her brother, that is.
And I've also just had another random, deviant idea.
What if Kanako was a tomboy to the point where she might try to pass herself off as a reverse trap.
She's still close to Keitaro, just that she wants him to see her as his equal.
Possibly to the point where she's willing to wear a strap-on so she can double team a girl with Keitaro.

At certain points in the manga you can see a definite, eerie resemblance between Haruka and Kanako, despite the fact that Kanako is supposed to be adopted. Conclusion: Kanako and Keitaro are blood related - either full siblings, or Kanako is secretly Haruka's daughter (which would also kind of explain why Haruka tries to avoid her so much).
