I think they were saying it's a satire of the modern dark gritty reboots we're seeing now. I had to stop after the first 3 minutes, but you can kind of see it in the shaky cam, firing into the air while running forward and looking back, gratuitous use of holographic interface, and cheesy dialogue - though the last one just might be because it's Power Rangers.
But it's not. Aside from names, there's nothing even close to Power Rangers in that whatever-it-was.

O_O

I fail to understand how could you NOT like that Moviette. I mean, sure I was a Power Rangers fan from when they first started running, but at the same time, this movie does a lot of things you would have loved to see come up. Not the blood and gore, but a tangible sense of plot that the shows generally lacked (because, let's face it, Monster of the Week formula does get a little old after a while). And it does something that I think we would have done if this wasn't strictly set to "Kid's Show," and that is
make Rita Repulsa flipping smart enough to infiltrate the Power Rangers as one of their own without getting caught all that time. She was supposed to be terrifying enough that she had to be sealed away, but here, you really get the feeling of just how monstrous and evil she is when she starts killing off the Rangers in their own homes one by one, while wearing the face of Kimberly and fooling nearly everyone.

By all accounts, I thought this retelling was awesomely done, and I generally don't like gritty remakes of older properties. Don't think of it as a MMPR movie, but look at it as an Elseworld story, where things did not go right, and we're trapped in some fucked up reality where evil wins/good loses.

I liked the plot (Machine empire being more three-dimensional, Rita being smart.) I liked the special/visual effects (what little we saw of the Megazord, Green Ranger's Shield being a Solid-Light construct.)

But I would never want something related to the actual Power Rangers franchise to be that gritty.

Of course, keep in mind that the actual Power Rangers franchise has also had Zords destroyed, a Ranger actually die (Kendrix, albeit later revived,) on-screen flashback deaths (Cole's parents in Wild Force,) and a series set in a post-apocalyptic world (RPM.) If he'd cut out the swearing, blood and gore, and the part with Bulk and Skull (seeing as they are fan-favourites, that probably really irked people,) would it really have been that bad?

Oh, I agree with that. Except for maybe Bulk and Skull -- I wouldn't mind if they *stayed* douchebag idiots, to be honest.

Douchebag idiots is one thing, but
meth heads
is quite another. I was never particularly a fan of them, but I was surprised to learn from Linkara's HOPR that they're apparently fairly beloved by the wider fanbase.

Same here. He makes them sound much more impressive than I remember.
