Ranma ½ Love at First Bite

Well, that's different. Usually Soun is written as wanting the engagement regardless of any/all costs, including the happiness of those involved.

The narrative doesn't claim Akane had thought the thing through the whole way. There are multiple ways to interpret the line. I'd note also that the Bakusai tenketsu arc has Akane cooking for Ryoga in a purely platonic way (even though Ryoga himself didn't see it as such). Your interpretation is equally legitimate, but I thought pointing out others might be of some interest.
Thats exactly what I meant. Akane would make Kuno some food and give it to him, thinking 'hey, it worked for Ranma, now he'll listen to me'. Instead, Kuno would see it as her demonstrating interest in him in a manner thats actually how girls in Japan demonstrate interest in dudes and not something hes just being delusional about, and would react appropriately. Which is totally not what Akane wants >.>

Yes... but in fan fiction despite that in most cases he is also written off as getting away without any real punishmnet for the crap he does pull...

I've been waiting years for a fanfic to come along where Soun says the line to Ranma about his situation not being so bad (referring to curse) and Ranma whiping out a packet of instant girl and wetting Soun down and asking if he can now still say it is not so bad...

I feel like a bully who just took away someone's favorite toy. ^^;

I'm trying to avoid being lazy. One of the patterns used fairly often in Ranma x Kasumi matchups is Akane being turned into a lump of rage in order to kick the plot forward or get her out of the way quickly.
Meh... I agree fanfiction would have it be the lazy method perhaps... but her misinterpreting or tuning out to assume worst of Ranma is pretty much canon...

Okay, how about a compromise?

ôNgrrk!ö came AkaneÆs strangled reply at her sisterÆs entirely inappropriate antics. Repressed?! She was aware that Nabiki was only teasing, but the sketchÆs contents sounded eerily accurate to her ears. That was it, she was going back to her classroom and she wasnÆt talking to any other idiot for the rest of the day.
I'll agree that Akane does tend to interpret things wrongly when it comes to boys. There may be a different way to flesh her out that's more inline with canon.

Considering her cooking skills at this point, it might actually convince him she's trying to murder him (or at least emulating Kodachi), and thus, make him back off a little.

Those are some cute possibilities for Akane's attempt to cook for Kuno.

Next scene below.

=====

There exist items that are so replete with femininity, so steeped in girliness, that they made any man within their presence sweat from their eyeballs. One such item was in the possession of Ranma Saotome who was in front of KasumiÆs room, his feet squeaking against the hardwood floor as he shuffled in place. Was that wood creaking?! He ducked while craning his neck to check behind him for the umpteenth time.

Kuno had led him to a shop, which he had discovered to be an antique store. Inside, he found a doll. The shop keeper told him that it was a replica of a design created more than a hundred years ago by a German Count. The dollÆs name was æKleine BeereÆ or æLittle StrawberryÆ. Like its namesake, the doll had rosy blonde ringlets like spun sunlight, pale green eyes, and a pink dress the color of strawberry Pocky with white ruffles at the trims.

Even for a replica, the doll had been crafted by a master, which was fully reflected in its price tag. Ranma lowered his head to avoid the sting to his pocketbook.

At least the doll included a nice, nondescript leather case. He didnÆt think he could live down the embarrassment of being seen holding it.

Ranma breathed heavily. ôPathetic, youÆre Pathetic, Ranma! Why are you getting all worked up about dropping something off at a girlÆs room?ö

Kuno seemed like an okay guy, but Ranma had to doubt the wisdom of someone whoÆd been chasing Akane to the point that the girl had developed an active animosity towards him. Then again, he considered, he was facing the exact same situation. If the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, how would you define doing something different over and over, but not expecting anything to change?

Clenching his jaw tightly, he took his fist and inched it towards the door, his wrist bending to initiate a knocking maneuver. Was it not the erring partyÆs duty to make amends? Nay, it was a fiancÚÆs Duty to his betrothed! He was taking responsibility as the one who chose Kasumi, and no obstacle was going to hinder his task! A small drop glimmered at the corner of his eyes. Truly, he was a man!

TheyÆd only really been introduced today, but he might need to cut down on talking with the stick swinging senior.

He froze in place, his knuckles just short of following through with his first rap when he heard an ominous æDUNÆ ring out in his mind, and the door began to loom over him like a gigantic, beastly maw.

There was a fluttering of cardboard as his spine folded like cheap house.

ôIdiot!ö Ranma cried, not knowing to whom he was directing the insult as he streaked down the second floor corridor.

This peace offering probably wasnÆt even gonna work. It was bound to backfire on him! He was better off hiding the offending case was going to return the doll and think of another way. What was this called again? Yes, a tactical retreat in order to regather is scattered forces. These were all good reasons that sounded very sensible to his firing grey matter.

Vision blurred by manly tears, Ranma blindly vaulted over the guard rails. Unfortunately, the stairway wasnÆt clear.

ôHiiiiiiii!ö came a high-pitched shriek.

æKasumi! Aw no!Æ Ranma threw his arms back in a desperate effort to stop himself. Unfortunately, the added mass of the giant knife strapped at his back and the largish leather case he was holding screwed up his balance enough that he ended up draped all over Kasumi before they both fell. By instinct, He took a split second to adjust their position so heÆd be the one taking the brunt of the impact.

*Thud*

Hark! Who goes there? It's that old saw which is wrongly attributed and also just wrong!

Just had to drop this in. More on the rest of the snippet should be edited in later.

I've got to tell you... for a moment, and just a moment, I thought he was indeed holdin something other than the doll... as a doll is not the first thing to come to mind upon hearing something like that.

Hmmm... one item for correction though:

They'd only really met today
Yesterday, actually, unless counting a day as 24 hours...

That was informative. Am I supposed to do something with it?

Changed to this since today is the first day they've actually talked:

Also hyperbole is fun.

Oh, and may I have a Ranma/Kasumi matchup listing?

Aww...Considering that it's Kasumi she perhaps would have quite liked the doll. Sad that the guy has the worst luck, even when doing something nice.

I think the main problem I see developing with this story, while also a good thing however, is where exactly it's going. While it's a really nice take on a Ranma and Kasumi relationship there seem to be rather deeply planted seeds already about what the resolution is going to be and how it's going to work out. Part of the reason canon could keep the 'romance' of Ranma and Akane going so long is that neither one really wanted the other to whatever extent. So what you've got with Ranma and Kasumi here is pretty different as Ranma is openly very interested in making things work with the elder Tendo.

Now, this can go on for a time but eventually he'll either get that she wants nothing to do with him or things get rather creepy rather quickly. I know you're probably going to introduce some canon complications to all of this. And that will keep it going for a bit longer I'm just curious as to how long you are planning this to go because it could probably have a pretty solid run it's just that the relationship from one end is pretty cemented. I suppose you could introduce other girls who 'taste good' but that would make Ranma a bit too playboyish a character in this when he seems a bit more mature.

All that said you've got an interesting story brewing here. It's fun to see a nice Kasumi/Ranma relationship with the divergence from canon being the starting point. Hope to see more soon.

Thanks for the thought provoking review. All I can say without spoiling is that canon events aren't my guide for this story. There's a six month difference, and as other have mentioned, this means some canon events may not happen while new events might come into play.

As for the relationship angle, feel free to interpret this next scene how you will. Other eyes usually reveal angles I'd never considered before.

========

She hit the bottom of the staircase with enough force to knock her senses for a loop. Reaching out for some form of support, Kasumi noticed the she was pushing against something fleshy yet firm. Further exploration told her that she was groping at a well chiseled male chest.

She was lying on top of Ranma.

ôKya!ö Kasumi scrambled away, desperately ignoring the warmth threatening to rush to her cheeks as she disengaged the one arm that Ranma had wrapped protectively around her waist.

Unfortunately, her efforts to extricate herself put weight on her left leg, and pain flared through her senses.

æMy ankle!Æ she ended up on her rear. æIÆd better get this looked at,ö she thought, and nearly felt her heart stop when she realized just who sheÆd end up visiting.

æItÆs okay, I can still fix this,Æ Kasumi did her best to take stock of her situation. There were bandages tucked in the first aid kit, and she had practice patching Akane up.

The rapid footsteps from the family room may as well have been machinegun fire considering how badly it had shot down her plans.

ôI heard a noise,ö Soun asked concern tinting his voice. ôIs everyone alright?!ö

ôWeÆre fine, Father,ö Kasumi said, seating upright. Her trademark smile was out in full force. ôWe had a little tumble, thatÆs all.ö She almost succeeded in maintaining her faþade until fingers lightly prodded her leg and an involuntary whimper escaped her.

ôSheÆs not fine,ö Ranma interjected, staring intensely at the already swelling area. ôIt looks like she twisted her ankle.ö

Kasumi nearly jumped away in fright. When had he gotten there?!

ôMyà my little girl.ô Her fatherÆs eyes were beginning to glisten, but the pigtailed boy headed him off.

ôItÆs my fault!ö Ranma said while prostrated, gaining everyoneÆs attention. ôI wasnÆt looking where I was going. Please give me the chance to redeem myself.ö

ôDad?ö Akane came part way down the steps. ôWhatÆs wrong?ö She looked down at them. ôKasumi?! Why are you sitting there? Are you hurt?!ö She asked, hurrying down to help.

Meanwhile, Soun had lowered himself to clasp RanmaÆs hands. ôYouÆd do that? For my little girl?ö

Kasumi opened her mouth, but no sound was forthcoming. She was once again cast adrift in the rapidly unfolding events, unable to gain any control over the situation.

ôOf course,ö Ranma said while pulling away from the uncomfortably close mustache that was threatening to make contact. ôIÆll do anything.ö

ôWell then,ö the Tendo patriarch said, suddenly far too cheerful. ôDoctor TofuÆs our family physician. He runs a small clinic not too far from here--ö

Akane squeaked, diverting SounÆs attention. ôAkane?ö

ôAh.ö The youngest Tendo shook her head. ôNothing, Dad. I thought I saw a cockroach, but I guess it was just a shadow.ö Kasumi hadnÆt missed her sisterÆs sidelong glance.

Kasumi could tell she was doomed, but decided to go down fighting. ôFather, thereÆs not much pain. I think IÆll be able to take care of this myself.ö

Tears trickled down SounÆs face. ôMy little girl is so brave,ö he said before shaking his head. ôWhile your healing skills are excellent, we shouldnÆt be taking chances with your wellbeing.ö He turned to his youngest daughter. ôAkane, since RanmaÆs new here, could you guide them to the clinic?ö

Akane fidgeted a moment before assenting, ôAlright, Dad.ö

ôOkay then,ö Soun said, dusting off his pants. ôSince thatÆs settled. Ranma, make sure to bring Kasumi there safely. IÆm counting on you, Son.ö

The pigtailed boy saluted. ôI wonÆt let you down!ö

ôHahaha, thatÆs the spirit!ö Soun said as he returned to watching TV.

An awkward silence settled upon the three of them when Ranma realized that Kasumi didnÆt look as though she was ready to go, and neither did Akane.

ôErr, shouldnÆt we be going to see this Tofu guy?ö

æOh no!Æ Kasumi thought, and then turned to Akane who seemed to be in the midst of indecision. Was she going to tell him?

Akane flinched. ôWell you seeàö she trailed off before whispering something in RanmaÆs ear.

The pigtailed boyÆs eyes widened and he turned to Kasumi who palmed her face. æCould this get any more embarrassing?Æ

Poor Kasumi. I liked her well. RIP.

Can't wait to see Tofu's reaction once he learns that Ranma is Kasumi's fiancÚ,

I believe this is one of those, "Feces, meet fan. Fan, meet feces." moments.

Should be interesting to see how this goes. Maybe he'll be smart and take her to a hospital instead now that he knows.

Canon Tofu would have one of three reactions: Hurt Ranma, badly; Dance off with Betty leaving Kasumi in pain and realizing just how inattentive he'd be in a relationship with her, or; Freeze up and do nothing until Kasumi makes Ranma take her somewhere else. None of those would look good for Tofu in Kasumi's eyes.

What happens here is yet to be seen.

Sideways, upside-down and into a faceplanting death drop.

I suspect some things had happened in the six month gap period between canon appearance and this story's beginning, and as a result, Kasumi would rather limp around like a lame horse than go see the good doc. That she actually facepalmed when Akane told Ranma whatever she told him is more than enough of a sign she would rather die than go see the good doc.

Pretty sure that canon Tofu would not, in fact, hurt Ranma badly.

That's a pretty fanon thing for him to do, considering that the mere presence of Kasumi causes him to lock up and BSOD.

Maybe after they leave, and Ranma runs into him again... Maybe.

Um... didn't Tofu almost snap his neck simply by hearing Kasumi's voice in canon?

Yup. Volume 1 Chapter 2 page 8 and 9.

There aren't many stories where Tofu's dangerous obsession with Kasumi is exploited.

Ah, I thought he was implying that Tofu would attack him to try to win Kasumi, not go crazy and accidentally hurt him.

Just saying "Hurt Ranma, Badly" kinda has the implication that he's aiming to hurt Ranma, rather then just doing it becuase he happened to be touching Ranma at the time he heard Kasumi's voice and went insane.
