Ranma ½ Love at First Bite

Using an alternative character reading of Tofu, you could argue that he is a mean-spirit old fart that uses excessive force when it amuses him based on immobilizing Ranma in their first meeting for no reason.

Sure, many can say that it end well because it lead to a forced and sweet scene that becomes the pivotal event of Ranma and Akane's relationship. But, that guy was still abusing his powers for the lolz. He clearly has no problems using debilitating techniques on hapless patients.

Ah, I thought he was implying that Tofu would attack him to try to win Kasumi, not go crazy and accidentally hurt him.

Just saying "Hurt Ranma, Badly" kinda has the implication that he's aiming to hurt Ranma, rather then just doing it becuase he happened to be touching Ranma at the time he heard Kasumi's voice and went insane.
Who's to say that couldn't be Tofu's cover story? Granted I'm playing devil's advocate here...

"Oh, it was an accident, officer! Kasumi makes me nervous whenever she's around."

Kills the guy and emotionally traumatizes the woman in one fell swoop. Nice revenge if you're secretly inclined to be that way.

Better to lose your chiropractic license than go to jail. He even set up an evidence trail. Everyone in town runs for the hills when they see Kasumi even getting near Tofu.

Hmm, didn't see that coming. Let's see if this works....

======

For the second time that day, Ranma found himself outside of KasumiÆs room-- the difference being he wasnÆt alone. Akane was by the opposing doorframe. The eldest Tendo daughter had agreed to go to the clinic, but requested that she be allowed to change into more suitable clothes.

Akane had asked if she needed help, but was rejected with a single pained look.

He felt like a man drowning. Never had he experienced anything remotely similar. ôSo, umàö Ranma began, ôhe dumped her?ö

The girl cringed before snapping back quietly so she couldnÆt be heard through the door, ôDonÆt you have any delicacy?ö She looked down at her feet. ôI donÆt know a lot about what happened,ö she hedged, then her temper flared and she grabbed him by the collar of his tunic. ôIÆm only telling you this so that you donÆt cause Kasumi any more trouble by doing something stupid. If any of this gets out to Father, youÆll wish you were never born, got it?!ö

ôGot it! Got it! I swear!ö Ranma nodded eagerly, trying to placate the irate girl as quickly as possible. Dealing with Akane was like pouring water into hot oil.

Seemingly satisfied with his response, Akane let go. ôWeÆve known Doctor Tofu ever since I was in grade school. Kasumi would take me to him whenever I got injured training.ö

ôI was a bit of a crybaby when I was little.ö A light blush appeared on Akane as she smiled, striking Ranma with how cute the youngest Tendo could be sometimes before he realized what was happening and reduced the idea into a battered, bleeding lump.

ôDoctor Tofu has a skeleton named Betty, and heÆd act all silly with her to distract me while he worked so it wouldnÆt hurt so much.ö

ôA skeleton?ö Ranma scratched his head. He wasnÆt much of an expert on girls, but wouldnÆt bones and stuff normally be considered creepy?

Luckily Akane hadnÆt paid his comment any mind as she continued her story. One hand reached unconsciously to play with a lock of hair by her ear. ôEven though I didnÆt know back then, I think the way Doctor Tofu treated me was why Kasumi got interested in the first place.ö

She bit her lip, and the skin between her brows wrinkled. ôShe loves us, Ranma. Sometimes I take that for granted, but a lot of who she is comes from how much she cares. ItÆs not hard to fall for someone whoÆs always nice to you and the people closest to you.ö

ôAnd I guess itÆs no surprise that Tofu began to like Kasumi too. I mean, whatÆs not to like? SheÆs so pretty and perfect in every way. He began to act even funnier when she was around, like he couldnÆt even control his thoughts properly because he liked her so much.ö

Ranma had caught the hint of bitterness in AkaneÆs voice, but he was at a loss for an explanation. ôThen how comeà?ö He trained off, remembering that asking the question straight out was in bad form.

Akane smiled wryly at his miniscule demonstration of sense. ôIÆm not sure,ö she said, hugging herself. ôEven though IÆve lived with her all my life, Kasumi has kept a lot to herself. I suppose she had to be since Mom died. SheÆs the only one of us who can talk about Mom without showing any hurt. Every so often, when Dad isnÆt around, Kasumi would tell us about herà so we wouldnÆt forget.ö

Ranma scuffed the ball of his foot against the floor. He hurriedly suppressed the unreasonable surge of envy that he felt. All he had was a vaguely woman-shaped blur in his memories.

She shook her head. ôAnyway, sheÆd ask us to bring him dinner that she just so happened to make too much of or sheÆd say that the food was repayment for books heÆd let her borrow. We only got denials every time Nabiki and I tried to get a confession out of her.ö

ôThen one night about three months ago, she came home wearing makeup and a beautiful formal nightgown. Nabiki and I had thought sheÆd gone to visit a friend, but that wouldnÆt explain her dress. She was crying, and said that it was over. It turns out she had been on a date with Doctor Tofu.ö

Akane hugged herself tighter. ôHe had ended their relationship. You should have seen Nabiki, she was ready to tear him apart. I think seeing NabikiÆs rage was what brought KasumiÆs composure back. She assured us that heÆd been a perfect gentleman, and broke it to her in the nicest way possible.ö

ôWe didnÆt push for the details, and Kasumi never talked about it after. SheÆs been avoiding him ever since. I wonÆt lie-- not being able to share Big SisterÆs troubles hurts, but she doesnÆt like burdening others. I think thatÆs why sheÆs kept Dad in the dark too.ö

Ranma rubbed the back of his neck. ôThis is a lot to take in,ö he said nervously.

Akane closed her eyes. ôI know.ö

Interesting...

This can sort of be interpreted (at least to me) 2 completely different ways, considering she refused to talk about it.

BTW... considering you have some 63kb of text, were you going to end the chapter here and post #2 at FF.NET?

Not yet, there's an event that I really want to end this chapter with. I'm over my word count, but putting it in the next chapter would be awkward.

What are the two interpretations you see? It'll be useful to know if I'm hitting my targets properly or if there are more interesting ways to go about the next few scenes.

Huh.

From the scene I am going to guess that Tofu was already married and broke it to her after they started to get more serious or he was forced to go to an omiai by his family because he was nearing his 30s and because he wanted to honor the whole process of the matchmaking.

Or it might the the whole age thing. Tofu might not have felt that it was appropriate.

Or some darker options that I hope isn't the case.

Pine, I have a question. What type of nightgown? The type that can pass for regular ware in public or... the secret variety?

Well... I was going to be content just to see which, if either, was right, but since you asked basically I was thinking along the following lines:

This explanation on Akanes part is only from her viewpoint, which is important as it may well be she is not understanding what really went on other than the obvious fallout from the failed 'date' itself.

Either that attempt on Kasumi's part was a last effort on her part to get him to act correctly around her and accept her (as compared to how it was in canon) and it failed... It seemed most of the intereaction was indirect, and initiated by Kasumi.

Or, she never actually stood a chance. I'm basing this idea partially on Akanes explanation why she thought Tofu was acting the way he was with betty due to her age. Kasumi is now an adult, and in point of fact by most standards would have become one almost exactly the time of the date... if he really was interested in her due to her age she would not be of interest any more. That would explain his dumping her, rather than her dumping him, assuming Kasumi told Akane and nabiki the truth of that night.

With her closing up afterward as a result, it makes some of her actions a bit more understandable, at least to us. I have to wonder if a ranma as different as this one might make a similar conclusion.

So am I the only one who remembers that Ranma and Akane prevented Tofu's mother from marrying him off in one of the earlier episodes?

This Ranma seems to have had a later arrival than the OTL Ranma, with no intervention its likely that Tofu was married off before Kasumi got the courage to invite him on a date.

Changed to "formal nightgown", which should answer your other question about the nature of the breakup.

I've been rewatching Ranma eps to get ideas, and tend to take elements from there and the manga equally. Thanks for the reminder that said event exists.

As for Tofu's reasons, everyone's speculations have helped me examine the scenario. The details are almost fully crystallized.

=======

Luck was with the trio as they set off. There were few people on the streets as the sun cast orange in the moments before twilight. Mercifully, none of the people in sight were people who Kasumi recognized.

æIÆm glad Father asked Akane to accompany us,Æ Kasumi thought from her position hanging on her little sisterÆs back, æeven though she told him about my secret.Æ She pointedly refused to glance at the boy walking a few paces behind as she considered what alternative transportation arrangements that could have been made. The medium length denim skirt over legging shorts served well to preserve her modesty, but there were still limits.

In truth, she couldnÆt blame her youngest sister. What else could she have done? Part of her was relieved. Keeping secrets was one thing, but she wouldnÆt be able to live with herself if Akane had lied to protect her. Conscience aside, the tightness in her stomach at the prospect of seeing Doctor Tofu tied her insides into a jumbled mess.

Finding no other distractions, she watched the pigtailed boy who met her eyes for a split second before bringing his head down. He had been strangely reticent since sheÆd finished changing, speaking only when spoken to.

The boy was a maddening study in contrast; boisterous yet sometimes quiet, proud yet fleetingly humble, a stranger yet often more familiar with her than many of their neighbors.

ôI have a suggestion,ö he said meekly.

When she didnÆt acknowledge hearing him, Akane stepped in and threw the pigtailed boy a bone. ôGo ahead, Ranma.ö

The boy looked up and there was hope in his eyes as the words tumbled out all at once, ôWe could call for a taxi, if you want. I mean, they have x-ray machines there. ItÆs my fault anyways-- IÆll pay for the ride and the treatment, and the medicine. I think I saw a police box, and I bet theyÆd let us borrow the phone if weàö he trailed off, fidgeting with the handle of a leather case that he was carrying. Kasumi idly she wondered what it was and why the he had brought it along.

Her faithful sister glanced back at her. ôKasumi?ö she asked, implying that she was okay with whatever she would decide.

Kasumi stared at him in surprise. He was trying to protect her like Akane hadà albeit in a clumsy, bumbling manner at odds with the grace he showed while cooking. Granted, he was responsible for injuring her, but the sentiment allowed a bud of warmth bloomed in her chest, which spread to the smile she gave him.

ôIÆll be fine,ö she said, ôDoctor Tofu is very capable.ö She giggled. ôI suppose I was being a silly little girl, avoiding a good friend just because of my own insecurities.ö

Ranma sharply switched his attentions to the houses around them. ôO-okay,ö he stuttered. Kasumi tilted her head in curiosity at his reaction, but was unable to guess at the cause.

Akane lowered her chin so she could make contact with KasumiÆs arm. ôYou sure?ö

Squeezing her little sister tenderly, Kasumi found that the knot in her stomach had untied itself. ôI canÆt run forever,ö she said as much to for her own benefit as her sisterÆs.

I guess the issue I have, is why bother going to Tofu at all... Nerima is a big prefecture (even back then), he cannot be the only doctor in the area... and I do not nessecarily mean going to a full blown hospital, but other small practices...

So... why bother with him if there are such hard feelings and even a danger

Unless this Tofu is different from Canon, even if the feelings of the breakup are different, it does nothing to negate the dangers inherent in seeing him...

This isn't all of my answer yet, but feel free to theorize.

======

Akane paused at the sign post marking the small, cube-like building as a place for bone setting and medicinal services. A tremor of trepidation passed through her. In hindsight, it may not have been a good idea to visit this particular doctor considering her sisterÆs presence, but Kasumi had made a choice and she had to respect that.

Doctor Tofu was a talented physician. His most loyal patients were in the older age bracket, and his expertise in the workings of the bodyÆs joints, muscles, and bones enabled many a geriatric to live fulfilling and independent lives. Many would attest to his fine healing skill. However, there was also a dark side to his reputation, a warning that everyone who frequented the Good Doctor whispered in hushed and desperate tones to the uninitiated. It was that one had to be wary of Kasumi Tendo. For when the Doctor and his crush were in the same general vicinity, ôaccidentsö are soon to follow.

All things considered, this wasnÆt KasumiÆs first time going to the doctorÆs. SheÆd gone before, and in none of those instances had she ended up a mangled wreck. Kasumi had also come back physically unharmed from the date. While it was mostly conjecture, recalling these two things did settle AkaneÆs nervesà somewhat.

ôWhy so nervous?ö Ranma grinned with a confidence that could only be born of ignorance and feigned nonchalance. ôLetÆs go.ö

Akane felt KasumiÆs grip tighten and mentally shrugged. Worse came to worst, she could probably trip him for a sacrifice and escape.

Ranma slid the glass doors open for them. ôAnyone in?ö

ôAh, welcome to my clinic,ö A well-built man around thirty said. He was wearing a brown gi, and was in the middle of drying his hands with a hand towel when he looked to see who it was, and froze.

ôKasumi,ö he said surprise evident. Akane noticed his round rim glasses fog for a split second and she was ready to bolt, but then the lenses cleared and she let her guard down slowly. She was curious though, how had he taken control of himself?

He blinked, regaining the rest of his composure. ôAh, Akane! ItÆs been a while,ö he directed his attention to the roomÆs last occupant, ôand this is--ö

ôRanma Saotome,ö he said, boldly blocking the doctorÆs path to her, ôheir to the Saotome School of Anything Goes Indiscriminate Grappling and KasumiÆs fiancÚ.ö

Akane mentally groaned when the woman on her back let out a strangled cry. æàshould have seen that coming.Æ

Hmmm... I'll have to mull this over, I see a couple possible reasons why Tofu did that.

"Ranma Saotome," he said, boldly blocking the doctor's path to her, "heir to the Saotome School of Anything Goes Indiscriminate Grappling and Kasumi's new fiancÚ."
I'd remove the 'new', as it implies she had a fiancee previously.

Something's not quite right with this bit.

Tofu Ono folded the towel he had been using. With slow, deliberate movements, he gracefully hid how badly the news had unsettled him. æFiance?!Æ his inner-voice screamed before he exerted his hard-earned control. Adjusting his glasses, the doctor coached himself towards sober second thought, æGot to think about this logically, Tofu.Æ

The boy confronting him seemed to be younger than Kasumi by a couple of years. Had she found someone else so soon? He glanced at the eldest Tendo Sister who was hovering between meeting his gaze and hiding behind Akane. This didnÆt look at all like she had wanted to show off her fiancÚ for his rejection of her.

Tofu mentally kicked himself as soon as he caught what he had been thinking. Kasumi was a wonderful woman and far above such pettiness. He shifted his attention back to something Ranma said.

æAnything Goes? IsnÆt that the same style that Akane practices?Æ His eyes narrowed imperceptibly as he put the puzzle together.

Tofu smiled his broadest professional smile. ôIs that so?ö From the fierce protectiveness the pigtailed boy was exhibiting, he was fairly certain that someone had informed Ranma of what happened between him and Kasumi.

His unexpected lack of animosity gave the pigtailed boy pause. ôYeahà Pops and Mr. Tendo had a pact to join the Schools.ö As though remembering something, he blinked. ôForget that, Doc, KasumiÆs ankle is sprained, could you make sure it ainÆt anything serious?ö

ôHer ankle?ö he asked, suddenly more alert. While it was Ranma who had caused the distraction, mere posturing shouldnÆt have stopped him from fulfilling his oath as a doctor. ôI apologize. IÆve been negligent in my duty. Akane, would you be so good as to lay down your sister at the back? Any bed should be fine.ö

ôOkay, Doctor,ö Akane said, hurrying towards the examination room.

After delivering her passenger to the bed, the youngest Tendo daughter had immediately taken her leave, citing that she wouldnÆt be much use by staying since Ranma was already there and they could borrow a wheelchair for the way back.

Tofu gingerly prodded and pressed KasumiÆs foot, taking special care to watch her expression for any sign of discomfort.

ôHow bad is it, Doc?ö Ranma asked worriedly.

He hadnÆt missed the concern in the pigtailed boyÆs voice, and was relieved-- pact aside, the boy seemed to have genuine feelings for Kasumi.

ôThe outer ligament is partially torn and swollen,ö he answered, ôThis should help with the pain.ö He tapped a series of pressure points before gently placing her foot on the bed. Rolling on the stool he was sitting on, he grabbed bandages and a plastic brace from a nearby cabinet.

ôIÆm putting the joint under compression to prevent fluid from collecting further, and this gauntlet brace should help guard against aggravating the sprain. SheÆll be good as new in three to four weeks,ö he said, getting to work with bandaging and bracing KasumiÆs foot.

ôT-thank you, Doctor Tofu,ö his patient managed weakly. Even though he had broken it off, Tofu felt some of his control slip. He still had feelings for her, and this was in fact part of the reason for the request he was about to make.

ôThink nothing of it,ö he replied with a smile. ôI would like to have a word with your fiancÚ though, if itÆs alright with you?ö

She turned away, but gave a small nod.

He stood before bowing lightly from the waist, ôIÆm grateful, Kasumi.ö Tofu couldnÆt begin to imagine what was going through the young womanÆs mind at the moment. Anyone else in her situation would have done everything in their power to prevent their recent X from conversing with their even more recent fiancÚ. It was a testament to the eldest Tendo daughterÆs faith in people that allowed her to say yes.

Be that as it may, Tofu decided that he should say something to put her worries to rest. ôDonÆt worry, Kasumi. WeÆre only going to have a short man-to-man talk, nothing bad, I promise.ö

Turning his attention to Ranma he said, ôNow if you would accompany me in my office.ö

The pigtailed boyÆs crossed his arms, his gaze flickering to Kasumi for the briefest moment. ôAlright,ö he said, ôlead the way.ö

123123

The doctorÆs office was small with only enough space available to house the tiny desk and two chairs. The doctor had taken a seat and offered Ranma the same courtesy, but the pigtailed boy had opted to keep standing to bleed off at least some restlessness as he took in the charts plastered on the wall, and the pungent mix of medicinal herbs in the air.

Ranma bit his lower lip. He had planned to stay out of KasumiÆs business, letting her work out her problems with the man before him on her own terms, but he hadnÆt been able to control himself. It was so stupid-- heÆd completely forgotten that Kasumi was hurt. Did he even deserve to be with her when all he lost all perspective upon feeling threatened?

ôI donÆt want to keep her waiting long, so IÆll get straight to the point,ö the doctor said, meeting his eyes. ôDo you love Kasumi?ö

The directness of the question collided against Ranma with all the force of a freight train. ôHuh?ö he said, going slack jawed. Was the doctor trying to throw him off? If he was, it was working.

He grappled with his embarrassment. What did he really have to lose? At the very least, Tofu was facing him honorably, man to man.

ôI only met her yesterday, and I wonÆt use the word love that easily. But I like her. Being with her, even for a little while, makes me happy,ö he neglected to mention that he hadnÆt really succeeded in doing anything other than annoy the eldest Tendo daughter, but that wasnÆt any of the doctorÆs business.

Tofu nodded. ôI guess thatÆs a good enough answer.ö

Ranma prickled. The jerk was testing him! ôWho died and made you King?! Whether or not Kasumi and I get along ainÆt none of your concern!ö he said, swiping one hand at the air.

In response, the doctor lowered his head. ôYouÆre right,ö he said, ôI have no right, but I still have feelings for her.ö

ôW-what?ö Ranma stuttered. ôThen why the heck did you break it off?ö

Tofu sighed. ôHow much do you know? ItÆs obvious youÆre at least aware that Kasumi and I had been seeing each other until recently.ö

Figuring the best way to get to the bottom of things was to play along, Ranma considered the question. ôKasumiÆs been tight-lipped about the whole thing. AkaneÆs only told me that she came home crying after a date.ö

A sad smile formed on TofuÆs face. ôI suppose thatÆs to be expected. Sometimes, I wish she werenÆt so nice. She could have at least called me names.ö Shaking his head, Tofu addressed Ranma, ôKasumi probably wonÆt want what IÆm about to tell you to get out. I doubt she would even allow you to hear this if she were in here to stop me. Nonetheless, even if things donÆt work out between you and her, you seem like a decent sort.ö He swiveled his chair to plug in the electric kettle behind him. ôCould you take a seat, please? This is going to be hard enough without having to look up at you while IÆm saying it.ö

Ranma shrugged, his earlier restlessness had faded. Turning the chair so he could put his chest against the backrest, he took a seat.

Tofu opened a drawer, lifting out a tea set. ôKasumi regards me as a kind manà and I suppose I am. The quality she overlooked, however, is that IÆm also an incurable coward. Do you know how long I left my feeling for Kasumi to wait before I finally acted?ö

Ranma looked at the doctor, a little annoyed. Was he trying to lord his familiarity with Kasumi over him? ôHow am I supposed to know?ö

Sensing his mood, the doctor smiled. ôPlease donÆt be angry. IÆm not after Kasumi. IÆm only trying to make you understand why IÆm speaking with you right now, and itÆs complicated so I want to go through it in a way that avoids misunderstanding.ö

ôOkay,ö he said. ôSo how long?ö

ôThree years and five months,ö Tofu said abashedly. ôAnd it would have been even longer had my mother not come to visit.ö

ôSince Kasumi was in high school?!ö Ranma goggled.

ôLike I said, IÆm a coward. I was attracted by how well she took care of her family and her gentleness. SheÆs so young, and yet she was able to become the pillar that kept her family from crashing down. I wanted to be there for her. Every day, I said to myself that I would finally confess, but the day I followed through didnÆt come until my hand was forced.ö

The electric kettle buzzed. ôExcuse me for a moment,ö Tofu said, unplugging the appliance. A steaming cup was offered to Ranma. ôIÆd like to serve Kasumi some tea as well.ö

Ranma nodded silently. It took Tofu a couple of minutes to serve Kasumi tea before he was back at his desk. He heard them exchange a few muffled words, but couldnÆt make out anything intelligible.

ôThank you for your patience, where were we?ö Tofu asked.

ôYou were saying your hand was forced or somethinÆ,ö Ranma said.

ôOh, right. As strong as my mother is in spirit, sheÆs doesnÆt have unlimited time in this world. After fifteen years of waiting, my mother visited to make it clear that she wasnÆt going to be around forever. She was going to arrange a marriage between me and last yearÆs winner of Ms. All-Japan Pelvis.ö Tofu shuddered involuntarily at the memory. ôThe matchmaking photos alone are enough to make a man go celibate.ö

Ranma winced. ôI guess I canÆt blame ya.ö

Tofu cleared his throat. ôUnder the twin barrels of such an arrangement, I overcame my fear of confessing. Did Akane tell you that even her mere presence drove me to incoherence?ö

Ranma looked away. ôUhà yeah, something like that.ö

Tofu gave him a wry grin. ôI had to close the clinic for a month for a training trip to get over my condition. It was something I should have done years ago, yet it was only the threat of greater duress that got me to crawl out of my hole. It was hard, but I finally managed to get myself to a point where I could actually confess.ö

ôShe accepted my interest without the slightest hesitation. I was delirious with happiness. I learned more about her as we dated, sheÆs a truly remarkable woman, Ranma. But as I fell deeper and deeper in love, I noticed something about her. She wasnÆt ready for marriage.ö

Ranma nearly fell out of his chair. ôWhat?! YouÆve got to be kidding, Doc. SheÆs practically the one raising her own family right now!ö

Tofu shook his head. ôThatÆs precisely the point, Ranma. Kasumi was very young when Mrs. Tendo died, and she had to shoulder all that responsibility herself.ö The doctors squeezed his fists together so tightly it was audible.

ôDo you know what she said when I asked her what she wanted for her future, Ranma? She said that all she wanted was a faithful husband who would come home to her and her children every day! When I tried to press her for anything else, she couldnÆt answer! SheÆs only nineteen, and the extent of her dreams is being a housewife! She has no hobbies or interests that arenÆt related to making a home.ö

A single tear trailed down the doctorÆs cheek, and he lifted his glasses to wipe it away.

ôI never thought I could hate anyone so much until that day. Soun Tendo let himself wallow in his own grief instead of living for his daughters. That was when I decided that I couldnÆt marry her. I could provide her with everything she ever wanted-- it would have been so easy, but thatÆs not what she needs. Kasumi is strong, Ranma. No one whoÆs gone through what she has and come out as well as she has could be anything else. However, that doesnÆt change the fact that she could be so much more!ö

Ranma had his eyes closed while he was listening. There was something not quite right about the whole argument. It took him some time to realize where the problem was, and when he did the vein on his forehead began to bulge more and more with every passing syllable. When he finally opened his eyes, the dead glare that he was directing at the doctor could have frozen helium. ôYouÆre a fool, Tofu.ö

The doctor was taken aback. ôWhat do you mean?ö

Ranma cast his chair aside, climbed over the desk and grabbed the doctor by the front of his gi. Bringing their faces so close that they could feel each other breath. ôæShe could be more?Æ what sort of garbage is that?! YouÆre damn right youÆre a coward. If you really loved her, youÆd change yourself! Become the man you think she needs you to be! The rest are just pretty words and excuses.ö

He roughly shoved the doctor back. ôThanks, Doc. I know what kind of man I have to be now for Kasumi, and it sure as hell ainÆt you.ö

The pigtailed martial artist whirled around, stalked towards his fiancÚÆs bed, and lifted her princess style.

The woman in his arms seemed like she was about to protest, but one look at his expression must have stopped her. ôCÆmon, Kasumi. WeÆre done here,ö he said and made his way out of the building, pausing only to kneel down and get the leather case he had brought.

The unexpected lack of animosity gave the pigtailed boy pause.
I suggest you relook at that paragraph and the one before it, I believe either something needs adding or splitting, because the first part reads from Tofus perspective and the rest from Ranmas... weird parsing it...

Akane, would you be so good as to deposit your sister at the back? Any bed should be fine.ö
Find a different word than deposit... makes her sound like a blood donation or garbage...

Be that as it may, Tofu decided that he should say something to put her worries to rest. ôDonÆt worry, Kasumi. WeÆre only going to have a short man-to-man talk, nothing bad, I promise.ö
Technically, if she is the patient, he has no right to talk to Ranma w/o her present.

ôOkay,ö he said. ôSo you how long?ö
Remove the 'you'

ôShe accepted my interest without the slightest hesitation. I was delirious with happiness. I learned more about her as we dated, sheÆs a truly remarkable woman, Ranma. But as I fell deeper and deeper in love, I noticed something about her. She wasnÆt ready for marriage.ö
This implies multiple dates... Akane made out like it was one date.

YouÆre a fool, Tofu.ö
At first, I thought Ranma fully understood, after reading the whole thing I suspect he only partially got what Tofu was getting at... realistically, I think them both a bit wrong, but Tofu moreso...

No one person in a relationship should be the only one to change because of that relationship, or decide its course... Tofu *and* Kasumi should have needed to change, likewise Ranma *and* Kasumi... a relationship is give and take, and has trust, among other things like friendship and hope. Both should change and give up stuff for the other. if Tofu really was right in his assessment, then he should have gone forward, and attempted to work through any such issue or lack of intent, he could have made her happy by meeting her needs, and them both change and try to discover what would bring out their combined best... her being only 19 means she is entitled to grow, and needs and wants change as she does so, in or not in a relationship. If the relationship were to crash and burn... that also is a part of growing, but they can at least state they've tried... this just ended up with both hurt.

EDIT: to quote a scene from a story that has always stuck with me:

Trust, friendship and hope are the foundations of love, and without all three it is not love.
That is from chapter 1 of 'Only You' by Tsunami-Saotome

What bothered me was that Tofu turned her down because she just wanted to be a housewife and it didn't meet some bar of expectation he set for her. You would think a conversation between them about what would make her happy or what she wanted to do with her life should have occurred with a common understanding being reached between them.

If she said a "housewife is a-okay" then Tofu should respect her decision since that kind of give and take and accepting them for who they are is part of having a relationship with another person. You accept them and they accept you for being a creepy older man with a thing for young high school girls...

I mean if he was serious about his feelings he should've just married her, given her the love she needs, and if *she* chose to aspire to be something more that's where he steps in to help her accomplish that. That's why I don't quite understand what the big issue is from his end, you know?

I suspect that he's got this idealized image of what Kasumi Tendo should be. Like he's playing Princess Maker or Making Shinji and is trying to level her up to match the version he's cooked up in his head. Maybe I'd even go so far as to accuse him of having been in love with an unreal concept of Kasumi Tendo that he's built and he's wallowing in disappointment because reality and fantasy isn't matching up.

If true that's pretty pathetic on his part and worthy of a kick in the face.

His take on love might even be more akin to something like parental love rather than a romantic one. What I mean by that is most parents have dreams and hopes of what their child will be like in the future and want a hand in supporting them to reach their goals. Perhaps he's mixing up the feelings of wanting to protect her like a surrogate parent or something?

Problem is, that and the affections towards a significant other is rather different, so he probably needs to get that crap straightened out before dispensing advice to others or moving on to his next target of romantic interest.

Yup, love takes hard work and compromise.

Good thing they broke it off because Tofu didn't seem to want her enough for the difficult parts.

Also, from personal experience I can tell you that torn ligaments in the ankles hurt like a bitch. Once the adrenaline wears off and you can feel it... Kasumi is going to be on crutches for weeks before light walking is possible without a limp.
