Naruto Naruto Canon Twists

Following on from Naruto Canon Tweaks:

What changes would you make to Naruto canon that would alter the central events?

I'll use a pre-existing example to begin with:

More story arcs that focus on developing the skills, experience and relationship of Team 7 prior to the Chuunin Exam and Konoha Crush.

The exact plot for those arcs aren't necessarily relevant but I would want them to feature things like the team learning D-rank jutsu such as the Body Flicker Jutsu and Temporary Paralysis Jutsu, them being shown training and sparring together, earlier explanations for concepts like genjutsu and nature transformation, and the presence of multiple shinobi with different ranks from Iwa and Kumo including genin squads in the same generation.

I could even get behind using a certain set of related arcs to build up Orochimaru, as long as it gave him a significantly more satisfying conclusion such as a reunited Team 7 temporarily working together to kill him once and for all.

So what is it about the setting, characters and/or plot that you think could have been done differently?

1.) Make Sasuke or Naruto a girl and forget about Hinata and Cuckura.
2.) No Indra and Asura bullshit.
3.) More focus on the Biju and less about the Uchiha and their magic eyeballs of doom.

I'd probably not make Kaguya happen at all, which seems a popular choice.
I wouldn't've ended it at Pain's defeat, but the revival of the dead was too much, too.
So make Madara/Tobito the final boss, with either of them having become the Ten-Tails Jinchuuriki.

I'd probably include arcs in the other villages, as well. Show off Iwa or Kiri, or maybe Kiri under Mei.
What I'd also include is a longer flashback to the pre-village period. Or to one of the previous wars.

Get rid of Neji's destiny shtick in the early part of the series so Naruto doesn't have a reason to mouth off about destiny that'll turn out to be incorrect in so so many ways

1: Make Sasuke female
2: Get rid of Sakura entirely
3: Shino on Team 7
4: Kakashi gives a damn about his students before they all get apprenticed to sannin.
3: Give Naruto some sort history between the ages of 1-11 to shape his character in a realistic way.
4: Naruto behaves and fights like he has a brain, not acts and occasionally fights like he doesn't.
5: All bijuu hosts become major characters.
6: War breaks out between the nations like it damn well should have. Then Akatsuki appears and everything goes to hell.

1. Proper development for team 7. Sakura was a Genjutsu type, right? Show us her learning some!

2. Have Neji kill off Hinata in the Chuunin exams, and use that to develop Neji some more, via guilt.

3. Make Orochimaru the main villain, and show off his more "Mad-scientist" creations.

4. Properly utilise the Nine Bijuu and their hosts.

5. Make Akatsuki more "human" and less one dimensional.

6. Show why the Sannin were considered Legendary. They're tough, but not really what I'd call Legendary.

7. More elemental Ninjutsu, or just more variety in Jutsu period.

8. Less focus on the Uchiha.

I would change things so that the bijuu have to be sealed in order, so Gaara and Shukaku would have been the first targeted. After that Konoha and Suna team up and convince the other villages to form an alliance earlier than in canon in order to protect the the remaining bijuu from Akatsuki. Naruto and his squad end up travelling all over the Elemental Nations trying to track down the Akatsuki cells, meeting and teaming up with elite ninja from every village and befriending each other jinchuuriki, and learning the names of the other bijuu and earning their trust. But Akatsuki is just too powerful. Time and again the heroes are defeated, another jinchuuriki is killed, and another bijuu is sealed. We get to see first hand just how monstrous the Akatsuki members really are and watch Naruto struggling to train and develop new jutsu in order to catch up with them.

When Killer B and Naruto are the only jinchuuriki left, the villages finally decide that just working together is no longer enough and call for a Kage Summit to iron out the details of a real military alliance to form a grand unified shinobi army to combat the overwhelming threat of Akatsuki. That goes about how it did in canon, except after Tobi shows up to save Sasuke and deliver his ultimatum to the kage he discovers that he's been betrayed. All the members of Akatsuki who were only in it for personal reasons - Hidan, Kakuzu, Sasori and Deidara - found out about Tobi's true plans and decided they weren't all that interested in becoming trapped in an eternal genjutsu. They steal half of the captured bijuu, with the intention of using them for Nagato's original cover story of controlling the world through war and a bijuu superweapon. This leads to a civil war in Akatsuki as Nagato, Konan, Zetsu, Kisame and Obito try to recover the bijuu.

The shinobi alliance marches right into the middle of this civil war. Kabuto shows up with a much smaller group of zombie soldiers (a half dozen at most, mostly former kage). Orochimaru decides to reclaim his cred as a major villain and rolls onto the battlefield with his arms restored in some non-bullshit manner that doesn't result in freeing all the Hokage, with zombified Kimimaro and the the Sound Four in tow. Itachi betrays Akatsuki. Sasuke shows up as a wild card. Black Zetsu forces Obito to sacrifice his life to revive Madara at some point in the middle of all this (and Obito actually stays dead). It's absolute chaos. Madara eventually reclaims the bijuu (Naruto is saved by the chakra of the Sage of Six Paths or something) and becomes the host of the ten-tails and is the true final boss. Kaguya doesn't exist. Naruto and Sasuke have their final duel. End credits.

Make Zetsu have more in common with John Carpenter's the Thing.

Expand the War arc so it's not just one really long ass battle.

Have Konan survive her brush with Tobito and teach Naruto about politics and ruling and shit.

Have Naruto level up his book smarts.

Give Taijutsu a bigger focus.

1. The original history of shinobi is the truth.

A history where the Sage of Six Paths was a miraculous ophan born with the Rinnegan who mastered chakra, invented ninjutsu and taught it the world. Also known as the False Origin of Shinobi. There is no such thing as the Otsutsuki Clan, God Tree, Rabbit Goddess or Black and White Zetsu. Nor are there prophecies and transmigrants.

(read: False Origin of Shinobi)

2. Tobi is Madara and Obito died years ago.

Madara was meant to die in the Valley of the End but was saved by a plant-like humanoid known as Tobi. It was one of the earliest experiments to reproduce the Wood Release and created a monstrosity that coudn't truly be called human anymore. As such, it hated Hashirama as much as Madara himself and saved his life for no other reason than that, wrapping its hollow body around the Uchiha to act as his lifesuit. To the wider world, Madara’s fate was an unsolved mystery lost to history.

Madara became a shadow of what he once was from his wounds but was able to live far beyond his natural lifespan with Tobi's aid. Together they learned of the history of the shinobi world through scattered tomes and tablets, including the Sage of Six Paths and the Ten Tails. They plotted against the hidden villages and would go on to join Akatsuki as its spymaster, believing that it would bring the vengeance that they sought.

And the Mangekyou Sharingan and the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan have the same jutsu for everyone who wields them without exception. Even weakened, Madara can use the power of his doujutsu and Tobi possessed a unique control over nature itself which made them a formidable team, even if they prefer to remain in the shadows.

3. Nagato is the final villain.

He was the first person to awaken the Rinnegan since the Sage of Six Paths himself. They awoke at the sight of his parents' death and its power tore out of the souls of their killers. But even as filled as anger and grief as he had been, Nagato feared this strange power so deeply that he unconsciously sealed it away until he could only touch upon a portion of its true strength. It wasn't until he lost his closest friend that Nagato could truly draw upon the Six Paths of the Rinnegan.

Nagato and Konan swore vengeance against Hanzo and chose to bring peace through force. At this time, Madara appeared before them and offered them aid and information. His knowledge enabled Nagato to summon the vessel of the Ten Tails, inspiring their plan to revive it as the ultimate weapon that would bring pain to the world.

Nagato mastered the Six Paths and created the Six Paths of Pain so that he could destroy his enemies without ever having to reveal himself (not because he was crippled). They chose to revive Akatsuki by gathering together the most powerful shinobi to capture the Tailed Beasts and recreate the Ten Tails. The plan to create an incredibly powerful weapons from the combined chakra of the beasts was true but the nature of that weapon was always meant to be Nagato as the Ten Tails' Jinchuuriki.

The Invasion of Pain destroyed the village but many of its people managed to evacuate beforehand or were protected by Tsunade (including Naruto and the toads) when the blow was struck. Naruto defeats the Six Paths of Pain but not Nagato himself who chose to retreat. They don't meet again until the climax of the war.

Orochimaru's dies for real, Kabuto joins Sasuke or dies too and Madara is the secondary villain, making Nagato the greatest threat in the series.

4. The Fourth Great Shinobi War is the Five Great Shinobi Nations against the rest of the world.

One of Akatsuki's long-term goals was to unite all of the minor hidden villages under one banner using their power, money and reputation. They incited the hatred towards the Five Great Shinobi Nations from the lives they’ve taken, the money they had stolen, the lands they had seized and all the countries they had destroyed in their wars. This Akatsuki Alliance represents all of the pain caused by shinobi and the fourth war is declared against the Great Five after the Kage Summit.

Nagato and Madara stole the research from Orochimaru's many hideouts to use the Impure World Reincarnation themselves, summoning all of the former Kages to serve as the most powerful individuals within the entire army.

5. Sasuke is female and Hinata is on Team 7.

Because, yes, I really do think Sasuke should have been a girl and I'd probably be rooting for Naruto the entire time.

Hinata's more suited than Sakura to be the heroine; her abilities make her significantly more useful from the beginning, her heritage makes her a better fit thematically, her character growth is similar but has greater meaning and she can easily fill the role of Tsunade's apprentice quite easily. But she would admire both Naruto and Sasuke, if for different reasons, and desire their acknowledgement without romantic feelings coming into play.

Hey, is there anyone who would have ended Part 1 with Naruto winning at the Valley of the End?

1) Sakura is more of an action girl, not just "average."

The thing about Sakura is that she's really just an "average" character. On a team of extraordinary personalities, hers is the only one that doesn't really do much to excite the reader. In that vein, she should have plenty of standout moments herself, either by cultivating her smarts and a strong affinity for illusions (a ninja version of Hermione) or remaking her into more of "the big guy" by giving her a very powerful weapon that only she can use to devastating effect (like an axe). Alternatively, she can remain the same, but "Inner Sakura" is a real thing, and can force a body take over, using her own set of badass skills and running on her own set of desires.

2) The Uchiha clan was manipulated by Tobi/Madara the whole time.

And Tobi/Madara, in turn, was manipulated by the Tentails the whole time. Because, frankly, the Uchiha suddenly wanting to rebel this late in the game never made sense to me, nor does Tobi's agreement to help Itachi out, not without some greater force purposely manipulating them all for a greater gain (removal of any future Rinnegan users). And, let's face it -- we've already shown that Madara was more than willing to manipulate an entire village to get Obito on his side (implanting Rin with the threetails), so why not his own clan for something else?

3) The jinchuriki form their own coalition.

Granted, it's more of its own story, but fellow hunted demon containers decide to get together and protect each other's backs since their own villages don't care enough to help them. Eventually, they would take base at one of the major hidden villages, which would make all the other nations nervous as hell, but also drown said nation in focused attacks from Akatsuki.

The Uchiha Clan kind of was being manipulated by Tobi/Madara/the Tentails. Black Zetsu rewrote the stone tablet that was left to them by the Sage of Six Paths to ensure they would continue warring with the Senju and attempting to recreate the Rinnegan and activate the Infinite Tsukuyomi. If it weren't for that the two clans probably would have made peace and intermarried hundreds of years ago.

The jinchuuriki forming their own coalition would be badass as hell although I can't really see it happening since Gaara and Yagura were kind of the leaders of their villages. Naruto, Yugito and Killer B were also respected heroes in their villages so I don't see them going rogue either. Han, Fu and Roshi could potentially go along with it since we don't actually know what kind of relationships they had with their villages (although the anime depicted Fu as a loyal and respected Taki-nin), but only Utakata canonically hated his village and became a missing-nin.

Clearly, the answer is both- Naruko could provide the tentacles, Sasuko the fingerwingbang to end all fingerwingbangs.

In the headcanon I had up until Tobi finally showed off who he really was, Tobi isn't Madara, or Obito. Madara and Obito are both dead. Tobi is Tobi. Tobi is. He's a lost, wandering nameless Uchiha taking the name Tobi who happens to have h4x space-time powers.

That's the big thing I would do. Make space-time ninjutsu his Sharingan power shtick, and get rid of this constant one-upping crap.

However, if you use chakra magic to get them pregnant, they actually have organs designed for baby development and orifices for them to exit.

Unlike the other :sick2:

Just remembered that theory where the Ten Tails was the malevolent intelligence behind the scenes that was guiding everyone to its revival and would become the final villain itself.

I miss that. Kaguya doesn't count.

Sakura keeps the same power-set but also gets Sarutobi-like Analytic Ability.
Sakura being a Genjutsu Type in Part-1 was because she had great chakra control combined with the analytic ability to detect abnormalities in the scene.

Apply that to every type of jutsu, and you have Sakura being able to counter a jutsu she is seeing for the first time because it's similar enough to another jutsu she has witnessed before.
Basically, Megaton Counter Sakura. Who is also a healbot.

Wouldn't it make more sense if the Eldritch Abomination took control of Kaguya thus becoming the big bad?

I mean between rabbit alien/goddess?/Jumped Up Elemental and Maker of the World/Source of all Energy, which would be stronger?

Analytical skills like the Third Hokage sounds more up Sasuke's alley. It practically comes with the eyes anyway.

And Sakura's supposed analytic ability amuses me since it was Sasuke who points out the genjutsu in the corridor (while kindly boosting Sakura's confidence by claiming she'd seen through it), Kabuto who points out the walking-in-circles illusion and Sasuke who sees through the illusion clones. Informed abilities make me sad.

So throwing in my own two cents for dealing with Sakura:

Sakura breaks the False Surrounding Jutsu near the entrance for the first test of the Chuunin Exams, and then the Sly Mind Affect Jutsu and Mist Servant Clones cast by the Ame team during the second test. During the month between the second test and the third, Sakura decides to train herself even though she hasn't entered in the tournament. She decides to develop chakra-enhanced speed that she pulled off against Ino, gathering her chakra and releasing it through her feet to achieve sudden bursts of remarkable speed. Speed that she briefly puts to use during the Konoha Crush against Oto-nin and Gaara for whatever good it does her.

So in Part 2 she's throwing mega punches and darting around with flash steps. Then she starts to learn the Strength of the Hundred Seal after the first arc or so (around the same time Naruto's trying to do the Rasen Shuriken so she isn't just sitting on her ass after Sasuke handed it to them) and completes it before the war instead of as a last minute power-up. Combine that seal with her illusion skills to give them a boost and complete the "surpassing Tsunade" idea.

But to be honest, what I'd really give most of her potential skills to other characters. Hinata works better as the medic (and as the martial artist) and Ino works better as the illusionist. To compensate for that I'd actually give her the Super Beast Imitating Drawing to match her new teammates, Kiba and Shino.

What about Sai? Well, I've long held the belief that Sai and Yamato should have actually been a single character. So he would be an undercover member of Root with Wood Release. Gives a really obvious excuse for why the resident wood jutsu-user wasn't around to deal with Shukaku too.

I think it was mentioned in another thread that Kaguya came to Earth? Pregnant before eating the Shinju, so she likely wasn't that OverPowered when she got knocked up.

I agree with Knight that the Shinju, or Kaguya serve Absolutely no purpose, either write Sage6 has Hagamoro or Kaguya, it wouldn't really matter. Hamura really was created just to justify the Hyuuga's existence to tie up final loose ends with more loose ends :)

TFF's mellowed out. I think most all of us are cool with girl/girl as long as it's tasteful and well-written, and I think there's a good number of us fine with boy/boy as long as it's tasteful and well-written. (Esama)

Honestly, I think we just focus on hivemind, perversion, and tasteful OR well-written OR crack stories at this point.
