Naruto [Naruto] Update List

sealkeeper is becoming a struggle. There's a lot that's annoying so far.

9 year old naruto, wielding a legendary sword, takes command of half of root, unbinds the hyuuga cursed seal, removes Orochimaru's cursed seal, and wages war against the Yamanka.  Orochimaru jumps in and commits actual terrorism in Naruto's name, and nobody tries to arrest Naruto for it, despite everyone thinking it was in fact Naruto.  In fact, the only response from Konoha or the yamanaka is to propose putting Ino, a 9 year old girl in charge of the clan and then tell her to go nuts.

meanwhile, inexplicably female kyuubi thinks murdering naruto's first and oldest friend is the best way to get into his pants.

Danzou doesn't notice his root agents are compromised.

Sarutobi, Kakashi, and Iruka, despite knowing Naruto is homeless, and slowly becoming alienated from his clan and his village, decide to keep his whereabouts a secret from the legitimately caring people Kushina entrusted Naruto's wellbeing to.  They don't even bother telling Naruto these people are looking for him

Kushina locks her child out of his house without telling him, and doesn't think to write him a letter explaining herself when she realizes it.

And yet I still want to keep reading it. I haven't been this conflicted over a story in a while.

I would say it's like a train wreck, but the story is actually enjoyable. I personally suspect that much of it is fan disservice, on purpose. :_: (Troll author is troll.)

It passed being a Train Wreck a while ago.
I'm only reading to see how Kushina can completely fuck everything.
Oh and Kakashi.

I doubt that.

What about Inoichi? He's the most recent person to jump on the cock up train.

it's like Watching a Train full of people you don't like and explosives on a collision course with a place you hate, you should feel bad about feeling good watching it.
Sometimes you should get comfortable and watch the world burn.

but, do you like this Fic's Kushina?
it's an amusing trainwreck for me.
She was incredibly stupid for the first four years of the fic.  But I find it hard to dislike her, because unlike everyone else, she actually has some extremely sympathetic motives, and her actions at least seem to be logically connected to those motives. Maybe in the next 11 chapters that will change.  Right now, she's the least unlikeable character.

This Kushina is too much of a fool for me to like, but I don't exactly like this fic's Naruto, either; in the sense that I see him as a Villain Protagonist, rather than the 'hero', I mean.

If it hadn't been rec'd on this thread, I'd never have given the story a second glance.

As it is, I got as far as Kurenai's POV in the first chapter before I noped out.

to be honest, for me it's one of those fics that are enjoyable because they are so bad that they end up good, yes the 'acting' is so BAD it ends up hilarious, the plot is so convenient for the Main CHaracter that you just want to watch with popcorn just how bad the others end up screwing themselves, OTOH the plot itself is not actually bad, with some better characterization it could en up being a good read, but it's a guilty pleasure if you end up taking it as a Meta-satire/parody.

Couple of updates...

Unto The Breech -- The Fic where the Bijuu + Naruto go back in time, all the Bijuu end up in the bodies of their old Jinchuuriki and shit goes off from there. I remember this having a great start, but then just stopped.

Whirlpools -- Updated again.

Echoes -- Updated, just 3 more chapters to go until completion. Only Psycho!Turned Insane via KB training!Naruto aka Warlord left.

Is Echoes the one with the alternate versions of Naruto? If so, I think I abandoned it in disgust before I finished the second chapter because of over-the-top abuse of Naruto.

It is the one, though I'm not sure about this over-the-top abuse part. Given the very concept of the story is about the multiverse and a plethora of different Naruto's shown, like Berzerker!Naruto getting royally fucked because Shisui Kotoamatsukami'ed the fuck out of everyone in a vengeance scheme, Puppeteer!Naruto, Canon-like!Naruko, ect. ect. ect. Each character comes from a 'verse where things are decidedly different.

This is probably my biggest gripe with fanfiction readers, the bemoaning about 'AU' or 'NINO' and how it isn't anything like Canon. Seriously, if some one wants to read Canon they should pick up the manga, cause that's the only canon that counts. Now, if some one advertises it's a canon Naruto when it's clearly Emo!Naruto then have at it, but otherwise it's all AU or divergences anyway.

Anyway, yarp.

Many alternate Narutos, yeah, but making the main one's Konoha a hellhole without redemption hits too close to REALLY SHITTY fanfics for me; it's like NaruHina pairings, except I give the latter 1 (exactly one) chance to (not) screw up before hitting 'close tab'.

I want to read about Naruto. Do I mean the manga, or the protagonist? Yes.   I don't want to realize, 20 chapters in, that the guy named Aizen Naruto, but who is actually red haired, was physically abused as a child, hates everyone, but loves the female Wolf Demon imprisoned in his Pituitary Gland, and is currently outwitting Team Blank in the world of Disboard with his Touhouigan, a legendary bloodline that enables him to kill all reader interest in a story, is not actually related at all to the series or protagonist I enjoy.

To that end, I expect a certain amount of canon adherence, and avoidance of "warning sign" cliches, which include, but are not limited to:

  • abused as a child rather than neglected
  • dark![Character Name]
  • sword (there are a few notable exceptions to this trope, but generally giving Naruto a sword in a fic is the beginning of the end for my interest)
  • bloodline!naruto
  • a bloodline the author made up!naruto
  • etc, etc, etc
  • An experienced ninja who has no business being outwitted or outmatched in any way by a child is outmatched by a child, and then devotes several pages of prose to describe how impressive that child is, full of rambling paragraphs that begin with "Still though,"
A perfectly good fiction can be written with these annoying cliches.  I've read some.  So I won't automatically disregard something based on any one of these.  But enough of them accumulate, and I'll drop it most of the time.  And most of the time, these things accumulate in the first chapter, so I don't have to read beyond that.

Still though, the premise for Echoes looks interesting enough that I'll check it out!  A good premise can justify and forgive bad cliches.

I thought the 'Primary' Naruto was actually very well handled. It isn't nearly as bad as Naruto believed it to be, and he was being twisted with only a slight bit of evidence to even suggest what happened in his original world was really what happened at all. Frankly the only thing of note was the inner council and their attempt to keep Naruto 'weakened' as it were, and even then Jiraiya was setting it up to get one over on them, but Naruto hadn't realized that. One of the biggest things that worked in favor of the view point of Naruto getting screwed by Konoha was his utterly lack of knowledge concerning the secondary function on the Kage Bunshin.

Really, never being told that when everyone knew he was going to have S-Class nin's rolling out the ass to come kill him? Yeah, that was stupid. Of course we all know the reason this was never explained until PTS was because Kishimoto hadn't invented it until that time as a way of buffing Naruto's strength (Since apparently he did all of jack and shit during the training trip), but I digress.

I found it an interesting character study of the simple 'What If' question that gets thrown out everywhere. Each of the Naruto's was very well fleshed out, hell even the Non-Jinchuuriki!Naruto was a god damn boss before, you know, Madara. That dimension extrapolated on Kakashi's lack of training and showed just a possible reasoning for how he was treated in the original timeline, but in the end it's all supposition, the story makes it very clear that anything that happens in one dimension doesn't mean it happened that way in another. A lot of people probably assumed, giving similarities, that it was simply the truth of all dimensions when the author makes it clear that the reason there are so many dimensions is because of the different choices people make.

This story is all kinds of logic bending and twisted timelines. I actually rather enjoy the premise, but then again I don't much care about Canon!Naruto being represented in every Naruto fic, just so long as the changes are some what explained with out being way too far out of the realm of believability. But yeah, guess that's just me.

Anyway, suppose it is what it is, and people can like what they like and dislike what they loath. Hells knows I realize the hypocrisy of it all, since all it takes for me to X out of a fic is NaruHina generally.

It's possible I remember wrong, or that early chapters were edited, but I remember an irredeemable Konoha Naruto barely escaped with his life, and only because he accidentally unlocked the fic's equivalent of the Kaleidoscope (the Second True Magic, not the Mangekyo Sharingan). I might start the fic again to check, though.

Ah, yeah, you got the wrong fic then. The story starts during Naruto's confrontation with Orochimaru on the Tenshin Bridge mission, and it all goes wrong from there. Basically it starts with Orochimaru revealing the KB memory trick and postulating the reason he was never informed was because Konoha wanted him weak. My personal thought on the KB memory trick is it literally is made with a fail safe not to return memories until the user is informed, a precaution given the supposed mental strain inherit to the technique. It's likely listed even in the Scroll of Seals, but Naruto just breezed through it with out reading everything out (IMO, anyway).
