More For the Honor of the Corps.

The first month where Ichiro and Naruto became acquainted with each other was something of a learning experience for both of them. For one thing, Ichiro had to learn, first hand, just what it would have been like to try to train Kushina-sama without the benefots of her parents and Mito-sama there to exert some kind of authority over her. Naruto may have had his father's hair, but he was every bit his mother's son. Right down to his rebellious attitude toward things he thought were "boring."

Learning the basics of explosive tags? Well that came naturally to him and was a quick lesson. Besides, anything that went "boom" was like candy to a young boy training to be a ninja. Lessons in proper calligraphy techniques or the best way to infuse chakra into your sealing ink? Not so much.

Thankfully, Ichiro was able to tie that lesson about Naruto-sama together with another truth: Naruto was a very hands-on visual learner. Not to say that the child was incapable of learning from a scroll or being told something (although he DID tend to pick things up from scrolls easier than when they were just explained to him) it was just that he did his best learning by doing. Which is why Ichiro let the child mildly electrocute himself with a couple of homemade shock tags and singe himself with a low-yield explosive tag that was sloppily written to drive the point home that the boy needed to practice his penmanship.

Still, there was always that drive to know the "why" of things as they were shown to him that was occasionally irksome about Ichiro's new Lord and technical charge.

"Fishing? Why would going fishing be today's lesson, Ichiro-niichan?" Naruto all but whined as his new tutor explained the day's topic of review.

Ichiro fought the urge to roll his eyes as he recalled Kushina saying the exact same thing to Ichiro's own father many years ago as he replied, "It is not the fishing that is important, Naruto-sama. It is the method you will use."

"What do you mean?" Naruto asked with open curiosity.

"You are aware of the chakra control exercises we have started, the leaf-sticking exercise and the wall walking exercise. As I explained before, those are stepping stones to greater control and power with your jutsu as well as better stability in your seals. They are also good for certain chakra manipulation exercises developed by the Uzumaki," Ichiro explained even as he bit back the urge to mention that Naruto should have been started on them a good three or four years ago. Damned politics.

"Huh?" Naruto asked as he scratched his head.

Ichiro took a cleansing breath before he explained, "It will take several steps. The first step is to infuse a regular fishing line with chakra until you can control it enough to manipulate the lure in a way that will draw in a fish. The next step will be to study a scroll I will give you on the formation of chakra strings. The third will entail replacing the line with a thread of chakra, although that will take you weeks to master, I imagine."

"Okay. But what's the point to all of that?" Naruto insisted.

Ichiro paused to scan the area around his drafting room/apartment before he answered. It had become a custom for Naruto to meet him there after the Academy rather than he meeting Naruto for the sake of security. Ichiro did not put it past certain meddlers to try to spy in his lessons despite Clan Law and he trusted his security seals more than whatever ones might have been places on Naruto-sama's apartment. When he was certain that the proverbial coast was clear he formed a gesture with his right hand as if gripping a whip before his hand snapped out to his side.

To Naruto's shock a band of chakra, roughly the thickness of heavy twine, shot from Ichiro's hand and lacked like a whip before it wrapped around the cup of tea left on the desk to Ichiro's right. Then, with a flick of the wrist, the ANBU operative pulled to cup to him with relative ease and looked at his charge with a raised eyebrow.

"Cool," Naruto whispered with wide eyes as he thought of how he could use such a skill with his pranks in the future.

"Indeed," Ichiro agreed. "Although most would consider what I did a useless waste of power. Most shinobi that use chakra strings, which are usually puppeteers or other weapons specialists, try to make them as thin as possible to make them virtually invisible. As with many things with the Uzumaki, we chose to... think outside the box. Given the potent nature of Uzumaki chakra, and it's density compared to that of the average shinobi, we can solidify a chakra string without making it too brittle or chakra intensive to be of use. As a member of the main family, I imagine that will be especially true for you. In fact, while think twine a bit stronger than ninja wire was the best I could ever manage, your mother was noted for her chains made of chakra. They were... quite resilient."

"Kaasan used them?" Naruto asked reverently. Although it was still a sore subject that Ichiro could not tell him about his father, Naruto had soaked up stories about Uzumaki Kushina and her exploits like a sponge. Ichiro and Yuugao both though it was adorable haw the boy had spent two days destroying ever tomato he could find, much to the Uchiha heir's disgust and dismay.

"Yes. There seemed to be no limit to what she could contain with them. Some said that with her skills she could have bound the Kyuubi itself with her chains," Ichiro said with a somber look. In truth, it was more like "Reports of what appeared to be Kushina-sama's signature technique being used to attack the Kyuubi after it was teleported out of Konoha were corroborated by several responding ANBU..." as it was written in the official record of the attack submitted to Sarutobi-sama before it was destroyed.

"Kaasan was awesome," Naruto breathed, unaware of the memory Ichiro found himself lost in.

Ichiro smiled sadly for a moment before he agreed, "Yes, she was. And so shall you be. And that... is why we are going fishing today. But if anyone asks, we are taking a day off to teach you to be calmer and improve your diet."

"Yeah, yeah. Loose lips get you killed. Clan secrets. I know," Naruto grumbled. Ichiro was insistent that, as a Clan Heir in Konoha, that Naruto needed to keep Clan techniques to himself unless there was no choice. That had sounded a lot cooler before Naruto realized it meant he had to keep quiet about all the awesome stuff he was learning about seals and explosions and only talk about how they were working on things like chakra control and why he had trouble with the Bunshin. At least he got to show his improvement in taijutsu and thrown weapons.

"Your time will come, Naruto-sama. After all, you do not see Hinata-san using her family's special techniques in the Academy, do you?" Ichiro said by way of consolation.

"Nah. I didn't even know she had special techniques like that. Or that Shikamaru;s family could use shadows. Or that Ino's can read your mind," Naruto agreed.

"Don't worry, Naruto-sama. Someday you will remind the whole world what it means to be an Uzumaki. I will do all in my power to make certain of it," Ichiro promised.

"And then I'll become Hokage just like Kaachan dreamed about, dattebayo."

At that Ichiro could only nod in agreement.

I have to wonder why Naruto needs to keep this secret. It's not like no one remembers how the Uzumaki fought.

It's not the result that needs to remain secret, it's the training method. I'm treating Kushina's chakra chains like a kind of hijutsu of the Uzumaki clan. And, just like you don't see any clan-specific skills for any of the other kids, Naruto is keeping his own abilities close to the vest until he becomes a full Genin. Also, keep in mind that Ichiro will be teaching Naruto things no Academy student should be learning but aren't clan-specific techniques (Boom, heh heh). He could avoid some trouble with that by using the scrolls he's created, but there is no sense antagonizing Homura and Koharu at this point. The more he can impart the value of stealth in his charge the safer Naruto will become. At least from his point of view.

Ok, MoB said he liked the idea, so I tweaked it a bit and decided to put something here and see what sticks. Now I realize this will seem like it belongs in the movie thread instead, but after the first couple of snippets it will be pretty exclusively in the Narutoverse so I'm putting it here. First off, here's the pic that inspired it:

And. Here. We. Go.

Loki sat and brooded in his cell in the Asgardian dungeons following his failed invasion attempt on Midgard. He supposed it was inevitable. It seemed no matter what he tried he could never escape his destined place. Whether that place be in Thor's sainted shadow to make the oaf shine all the brighter by comparison or to be the bringer of Ragnarok. Every time Loki tried to escape either it seemed to be taken from him all too soon. The only saving grace was that his most recent family was spared his fate in ways that Angrboda and Sigyn had been denied.

And in the end, for Loki, it always seemed to come down to family. Real family. Not Thor with his insipid desire for Loki to stand with him and act as his surrogate brain to compensate for his own stupidity. And certainly not Odin's selective and cruel definition of the word.

"You are my son. I wanted to protect you." Odin's words were lies far more vicious than any Loki could conjure. He was no son of Odin. And he certainly was no son of Laufey either. Both titles brought nothing but misery to Loki's life. In fact the last time he had known joy he took a different name altogether. He had escaped Asgard for a time after Thor's arrogance and Loki's own failed marriage to Sigyn had been too much to bear after she had taken their sons with her to Vanaheim with the Allfather's blessing. Loki could no longer take Thor's insipid proclamations that "All would be well" nor the sneering comments of the royal court behind his back about how not even the goddess of fidelity could stand beside a weakling like Loki.

In the end, Loki decided to take a walk, as it were. A walk between the very branches of the Yggdrasil until he came upon a world that was not one of the Nine, but was remarkably similar to Midgard. There he came upon a family about to be killed by marauding "shinobi," as the local warriors were called, and saved them more out of boredom than any truly kind impulse on his behalf. In return the family had asked him to accompany them to the camp they were settled in with their Clan and dine with them. Loki had agreed. To this day he didn't know what made him decide to travel with them for a time, but somehow, by the end of his second year there, they had adopted him into their Clan fully as "Senju Hashirama." Without even realizing it Loki had acquired a new family, complete with a little brother of his own in the form of Tobirama.

But the world they lived in, a world of wandering ninja clans and constant war, was a dangerous one indeed and it soon led to the demise of Loki's adopted "parents." Loki was left to raise Tobirama to an extent, teaching the younger man the ways of stealth and cunning. Eventually he came to meet a pair of brothers named Madara and Izuna from the Uchiha Clan, longtime rivals and distant relations to the Senju and with them he came upon a grand scheme. Loki would use his sorcery, the limited nature manipulation he had learned in Alfheim in particular, coupled with the magic he had learned from the locals known as "ninjutsu" to build a village where the two clans, as well as several others could finally settle.

It was in the nation of Hi no Kuni, chosen mostly in honor of Loki's oft-forgotten moniker as a God of Fire, where the new village, Konohagakure would be built. And it would be a woman by the name of Uzumaki Mito, a distant cousin of Tobirama's, that would help to heal Loki's heart. Ah, Mito, his redheaded goddess. She and Tobirama were the only ones to know Hashirama's true origins as Loki. To know that darkness that lurked under the jovial veneer of the man that had been named the first Hokage of Konoha. And the most amazing thing was, Mito knew all of him and loved him anyway. She loved him fully, without reservation or condition. It was a something Loki had never encountered before.

Something Thor would take from him when he had arrived one day during the First Great Ninja War to drag Loki back to Asgard whether he wanted to go or not. The Allfather insisted that his "second son" return home immediately and stop "neglecting his duties to the Court to dally with mortals."

In the end, all Loki could do was say goodbye to his beloved wife, children, and his dear granddaughter Tsunade, before leaving a reinforced duplicate of himself with a fragment of Loki's true power and indeed a bit of his very soul, to carry out the suicide mission that would end the war.

A sneer crossed Loki's face as he remembered Thor's attitude at the time. Who was it that looked down their nose at the mortals and thought himself above them when then? And Thor had the nerve to scold Loki's for his own attitude toward unwashed masses that could not even access their own chakra? Filthy hypocrite.

Of course, Loki got a degree of revenge against Thor all these years later when he managed to break the oaf's nose as he was held in a SHIELD holding cell after the invasion. That had been a good day indeed, and was in fact the reason Loki was shackled for his return to Asgard.

**Flashback no Jutsu**

"Loki, brother, why would you do this? Please help me to understand," Thor implored. He had come to Loki's new glass prison to try to get through to his brother. Thus far, it had not gone well.

"Even you should be able to understand simple commerce, Thor. The Chitauri wanted the Tessaract. They offered me an army to ensure they claimed it. Tit for tat, as it were," Loki replied condescendingly.

"But that does not explain WHY you came to Midgard. You told me yourself that day in Asgard that you never wanted the throne. Why try to conquer this realm for something you never wanted?" Thor insisted.

"You say that as if what I wanted mattered to you. Or to the Allfather. We both know that to be a lie," Loki spat.

"Brother, that is not true. We have always cared for your happiness," Thor insisted.

The God of Mischief scowled hatefully as he spat, "Tell that to Angrboda. Tell it to the three children she bore me that your precious father banished and imprisoned for no other reason than the ramblings of the Norns about what the could do. The only reason Vali and Narfi were tolerated was because they looked Asgardian thanks no doubt to Sigyn's Aesir blood."

"Loki there were prophesied to help bring about the Ragnarok. They had to be stopped," Thor insisted.

Loki's scowl only deepened as he sneered, "And Mito? What crimes did my last wife and child commit that the Allfather bade you rip me away from them? An order you obeyed like the mindless dog you are, Odinson."

"Loki, you did not belong there. You were changing things on that world. And regardless your place was and is in Asgard," Thor replied in a tone that spoke of having this particular argument more than once in the past.

"Even you can not be so thick as to believe that tripe. I did not belong there? I belong in Asgard? I am Jotun, you idiot. I never belonged in Asgard. The only difference between now and then was that now we know why," Loki all but growled.

"Loki, she was just a mortal-" Thor began only to be rocked back as Loki's fist seemed to materialize out of thin air to collide with the Thunderer's nose, breaking it with a sickening crunch as Thor hit the reinforced plexiglass of the cage with enough force to crack it a bit.

"SHE WAS MY WIFE!" Loki roared. "She was the first person since Aggie to see me as myself and accept me. She was the mother to my child. Grandmother to my two grandchildren. She saw me, all of me, and loved me anyway. But she did not meet the Allfather's standards and so I was dragged away from her as if she were nothing."

"Loki-" Thor began, only to be cut off.

"Tell me, did you suggest that they send that miserable wretch of a woman to talk to me? Did you think her passing resemblance to Mito would somehow make me more inclined to care what she had to say? I will tell you this, mortal or not, Uzumaki Mito will always be worth a hundred of that mewling quim. No a thousand. And you took me away from her. From my family. So do not dare to say that you care about my happiness Thor. I was content. For the first time in my life I was truly happy and you led the charge to tear it away," Loki spat.

At that point, the conversation was cut short as the room flooded with agents from SHIELD intent on restraining the angered god. Clearly they had seen Loki decking his so-called brother on the surveillance system and decided that enough was enough.

*Flashback End*

Loki chuckled as he remembered the look of shock on Thor's face as he sat there on his ass with blood streaming down his face. Even if it was healed the next day it was satisfying to remind the oaf that while Loki was not walking mountain the way Thor and Volstagg were, neither was he weak. He idly wondered how much that look of shock would have increased had Loki continued with his first impulse as he saw the approaching guards and had launched a wooden dragon (one that happened to bear a striking resemblance to Jormungandr in honor of Loki's son) rather than letting the humans feel important and shackle him to subdue him."

In the end he supposed none of it really mattered. Either way he was stuck in an Asgardian cell waiting his judgement from the Allfather. And when that was done some other hideous torture would be thrust upon him in the name of "justice" until the Allfather needed him again and he would be released. Wash, rinse, and repeat, as the mortals sometimes said.

"I should have let myself be called to my fragment three and a half years ago when that brat Orochimaru summoned it from Hela's realm. Maybe I could have seen Tsunade again if I had," Loki muttered to himself.

Little did he realize that he would soon get the chance to do both once more when Orochimaru pulled the same trick twice to "help Sasuke find answers."

Agreed. Loki-as-Harashima is an idea that really should be continued.

This Loki would totally agree with Sasuke's type of revenge, though

My only problem is you misspelled Hashirama's name. Seriously, I catch myself doing it sometimes, is there some popular character named Harashima that I can't remember?

Ok, here's the next snippet. I figure one more in Asgard with maybe Frigga and Hela, then we get to Konoha proper.

It was at least another day before Thor came with the Warriors Three to escort Loki to the Throne room and stand before the Allfather. At another time Loki would have felt a kind of sick pride that king of Asgard felt threatened enough by Loki's power that he would sent literally the best warriors in the realm to act as his guards and escorts rather than the Einherjar. Now, he simply felt a numbing apathy toward the whole mess.

"Come Brother. Father has summoned you. We are to escort you to your chambers to dress properly and then take you to the throne room" Thor informed him somberly.

Loki thought for a moment of bringing up the fact that Odin was Thor's father alone but decided that if the idiot still refused to see the truth it wasn't worth the effort to correct him. "Very well," He said with an indifferent shrug, ignoring the hateful scowl on Sif's face as easily as he did the mournful one on Thor's and the wary expressions shared by Fandral and Volstagg. At least Hogun was his normal stoic self.

"Loki, I just want you to know that no matter what Father decides, you will always be my brother. Where you were born does not change that," Thor rambled in what he obviously thought was a comforting tone.

"And I grow weary of explaining myself to you, Odinson," Loki responded with a lazy drawl. His mouth drew in a nasty smirk as he added, "Although I do wonder one thing."

"What is that, Brother," Thor asked in response.

"If Mito, a woman of noble blood in her homeland and a capable warrior able to seal something like the Kyuubi no Kitsune himself into her mid-battle and survive the process unscathed was unworthy of being married to a second son never intended to rule simply because she was mortal... how would Odin react to a mortal scientist of common blood that has never raised a sword with the same problem?" Loki asked with a dark chuckle as he watch the blood drain from Thor's face at the question.

He ended up with Sif's blade in digging into his back to force him forward for his trouble at asking, but it was still worth it to see the wheels turning in the oaf's brain for once.

Loki couldn't help but add, "Oh relax Thor. After all, your Jane is just a mortal, right?"

The only sound for the rest of the journey to his chambers was Loki's wicked chuckle.

******

As Loki entered his chambers he tried to work up some sense of nostalgia at least at the sight of the various items he had collected over the centuries and found himself failing. Honestly he felt little more than a sense of ennui at the things that represented his life in Asgard. The more he thought about it, the more he realized he had never truly belonged here. And honestly, it had nothing to do with his Jotun blood. Loki was a square peg in a round hole. A scholar among warriors. A sorcerer among the mundane. The more he thought about it, the less he understood why he wanted to be accepted here. They would never accept him as he was, so what was the point of it all?

"Hurry it up Trickster. You will not keep the Allfather waiting," Sif spat angrily.

"No, we can't have that," Loki muttered in annoyance, not even deigning to look back at the Asgardian woman. It was no secret that there was no love lost between he and Sif. They seemed to have been at odds since they were children and both liked that arrangement just fine.

Loki moved toward his wardrobe nearly flinching at the green and gold formal uniform the servants he set out for him. They were a nicer and more polished version of what he had worn in Midgard. They screamed to the world that he was Loki Odinson and that he was proud of it. The only problem was that he wasn't. There was no pride for Asgard left in him and he was certainly not Odin's son.

Loki's face grew determined as he ignored the stand where the armor had been arranged and headed for his closet. It he was going to face Odin and his court of royal monkeys, he do it on his terms. For once in his life Loki would not back down to the Allfather. He would face this farce on his terms as an equal rather than a pitiful child begging for his father's attention. And if he was standing up on his own he could think of only one uniform he would want to wear.

It took a while to find it, bundled up in a chest near the back of the closet where the maids would not disturb it, but it was there. Loki smiled genuinely for what felt like the first time in ages as he opened the chest and looked at the red and black armor that had been a gift from Madara before the other man went mad over failing to be named the leader of Konoha. This was the uniform of a man. Of a leader. Of a Hokage. If Loki was to face his death or worse, this is how he would do it.

It didn't take long at all for Loki to dress himself in the armor of Senju Hashirama, although he idly wished he had the Hokage's hat and robes, a gag gift from Mito during Konohagakure's first year that somehow later caught on as fashionable with the other leaders of the Great Five, to complete the ensemble. Still, Loki felt more like himself than he had in years. He was ready to face Odin now.

The looks of wide-eyed shock on the faces of his "guards" made Loki want to laugh. You would think they had never seen him dressed properly before.

"Loki, you were to be dressed in your formal armor. Did the servants forget to set it out?" Thor asked as he tried to regain his wits.

"What do you mean, Thor. This is my armor," Loki responded with smile.

"Loki, this is no time for your games. Father is angry enough already. You do not want-" Thor began only to have his adopted brother cut him off with a raised hand.

"You are right about that much, Thor. I want for nothing from the Allfather at this moment. Not his armor. Not his titles. And certainly not his name. I may accept this farce of a trial but I am through playing his games. I will wear an armor I am proud to wear to face him," Loki explained. "Now I do believe the Lady Sif was concerned about the wait as I dressed? Let us be off." he added with proud stride toward the door.

"The King will not like this," Hogun muttered as Loki passed him.

"And yet somehow, I cannot bring myself to care," Loki breezily replied.

*****

Loki felt a sense of ease even as he marched trough the Halls of Asgard to stand at the base of the steps to Odin's throne. He ignored the stares and murmurs of the courtiers assembled to bear witness to his "trial" with practiced ease. He hardly cared what those sycophants thought of him when he wanted their attention. He could care less what they thought of him now.

Loki did feel a bit of a giddy thrill as he noted the look of frustrated anger in Odin's good eye, along with the worried confusion on Frigga's face. It was clear neither knew what to make of him or his attire. Well if they thought this was off-putting, wait until he really got going.

"Loki Odinson, you are charged with crimes against the Realm Eternal, Jotunheim, and most recently, Midgard. You have lied, stolen, and murdered in your quest to sate your ambitions. Do you have anything to say in your defense before I, Odin Allfather, pass judgement upon you?"

"Oh, I have a few things to say Odin-King," Loki darkly responded with narrowed eyes.

"Then speak boy, and be heard by all of Asgard," Odin responded with a scowl, not liking the tone or expression presented by his youngest son.

"Very well. Let all Asgard hear me as I say that I, Loki, do hereby renounce my place in the line of succession-" Loki began.

"Loki what are you doing?" Thor asked as Frigga's hand with to her face in mounting horror.

"- I renounce the name Odinson. I renounce all of Asgard and all who would claim me as kin within its halls. I am not your son, nor am I Thor's brother. As of this day I am dead to you all. Let all Asgard bear witness to this and accept it as my formal oath. I am hereby Senju Loki Hashirama of Konohagakure and I wash my hands of your all," Loki finished proudly as a shocked silence rang through the court.

At the end of Loki's pronouncement, Odin shot to his feet as his fist tightened around Gungnir and he grit his teeth in anger. "You dare! You dare insult this family with your poisoned words in front of your people?" Odin demanded.

"You are not my family, Odin Allfather. I am not Asgardian as we all well know. And somehow I don't think the people of Jotunheim would care if you felt insulted by my words. Nor would any other people that would claim me as their own. Either way, you can take your name, your titles, and your hypocrisy and shove them. I'm through with them and I am through with you," Loki shot back unbent by Odin's fury.

Odin visibly restrained himself from striking at Loki with Gungnir's power as his stilled before moving back to his throne. "So be it. Your oath is heard. Loki Odinson is no more. Guards, take this nameless prisoner away to rot. He is not worthy of a formal trial before the whole of the royal court. Instead he will be judged by a simple tribunal as any other common criminal would be," Odin said with a scowl before sitting once more on the throne of Asgard.

"Father, you can't-" Thor began, only to be cut off with a feral growl, much as Loki had been when he tried to plead Thor's case just before Thor had been banished.

"Loki Hashirama Senju has made his choice, Thor. The matter is closed," Odin said with an air of finality.

For many years to come, many would agree that the most disturbing thing about the whole affair was not Odin's rage or the silent tears that fell from Queen Frigga's eyes. No, it was the peaceful and happy smile, one that for once bore no malice toward anyone, as Loki let the Einherjar herd him back to his cell. In fact, if one listened closely, they would swear they heard the Trickster whistling a jaunty tune on his way back once he had existed the throne room proper. (I'm thinking Naruto OST 1 Main Theme myself.)

Great characterization... loving Loki being himself and yet being more.
Nice slap in the face of the Asgardians.

Loki used the Eastern tradition he learned in Konoha. Odin used the Western one used in Asgard. Seemed pretty consistent to me.

It seemed bizarre to me. As far as Odin knew Loki decided that Loki wasn't his first name anymore in an effort to spite his father even more.

You're assuming Odin knew nothing about the Elemental Countries and their traditions. Keep in mind that he would have had Heimdall observing everything about the region while keeping an eye on Loki for a few decades before he sent Thor to force him to come home. Odin is well aware of how mortals do things there. That doesn't mean he'll lower himself to doing the same.

The touch of saying Loki first in Loki Hashirama Senju is a nice touch. A bit of passive aggressive 'this comes before your silly fantasies' that I could see Odin doing.

In many ways the people of Asgard would say that Thor's time on Midgard had been good for him. It had calmed his temper somewhat and had better prepared him to rule in the future. Then there were times like now, where that calm seemed so unnatural that even Thor's closest friends worried for his state of mind. Instead of raging, throwing over tables and roaring in anger Thor simply stared out the window and watched the eternal beauty of Asgard, lost in thought with Queen Frigga by his side.

His companions, however, were more vocal if not more contemplative as they stayed carefully out of earshot.

"It doesn't make any sense. What is there to gain for the little snake in making that announcement? It is madness," Sif insisted as she paced like a caged lioness.

"We've often said that none know Loki's mind save Loki himself. Maybe he has some plan with this?" Volstagg suggested.

"Not much of a plan. Removing the protection of his royal name and ensuring he will face a commoner's trial. With his list of crimes there's only one sentence they will give. Especially is the Allfather refuses to get involved," Fandral countered.

"Perhaps he simply desires death," Hogun offered grimly.

"What? That's insane," Sif insisted.

"Is it?" Volstagg asked. "Nobody outside of Thor, his family, and we who are closest to them know that Loki let go of Gungnir that day. And who here would ever expect Loki of all people to lead a frontal assault on any realm, even one as weak as Midgard? There was no subtlety to that attack at all once it began. That is nothing like the Trickster we know."

"That still makes no sense. Why all this effort just to end his life? There are a thousand ways he could have taken that would require a fraction of the effort," Sif scoffed.

"Loki did always like to cause a stir. This certainly qualifies," Fandral offered with a shrug.

"And hurts Thor and the Queen all the more. Miserable pest. I hope they choose the most painful execution method possible for him. It would serve him right," Sif sneered.

Hogun chose to keep his own counsel rather than contribute to the conversation any more at that point. After all, he was the only one among Sif and the Warrior's three that understood the pain of loss. Hogun had all of his family and people wiped out before he met Fandral and Volstagg. He also realized that Loki had now lost everything three different times. First with Angrboda's death and the imprisonment of his children. Then with his failed marriage to Sigyn. And finally being forced to give up his family with the mortal woman he had settled with a few decades ago. Add losing the throne to all of that and yes, Loki could covet an end to his pain. Pity nobody saw that until it was too late. Then again, the Liesmith always had been a master at hiding what was on his mind.

*****

It was in the evening, just after the jailer brought Loki his dinner, when he found himself with a visitor.

"Your Majesty," Loki intoned with a bow of his head at the sight of Frigga being allowed to enter his cell.

"Loki," Frigga stiffly replied as she tried to hold back the tears she felt at the back of her eyes.

"To what do I owe the honor of your company, Queen Frigga?" Loki asked formally, his posture stiff and stilted.

"Do not. Do not dare to speak to me as if I am some stranger to you. You are my son, Loki," Frigga hoarsely demanded.

Loki felt whatever pity he held for the Queen's pain evaporate as he coolly responded, "Hardly. There is no kinship between us, Asgardian. That is something you know all too well."

"Is that why you do this? Why you embrace this madness? Do you forget that Thor is no more the product of my loins than you are? This he is the child of Odin and Gaia? That does not make me any less his mother, or yours. I raised you. I loved you. Both of you," Frigga insisted.

"Such loving sentiment," Loki spat. "And tell me, mother, if you care so much for family, how are your grandchildren?"

"What?" Frigga asked, put off balance by the question. "Vali and Farfi are well. I still correspond with the Lady Sigyn about their welfare. Or I did before that terrible mess with the Bifrost, at any rate."

"Ah, and what about your other grandchildren? When did you last so much as look upon Fenrir in his imprisonment? Or ask Heimdall to tell you of Jormungandr? When did you last ask your dear husband how little Hela fared after he negotiated some issue with her about the rights between Valhalla and Nifelheim? I suppose you see Sleipnir often enough watching your husband ride him like a mindless beast," Loki demanded with a scowl.

"Loki," Frigga tried to interrupt in a soothing voice.

"Or if you could not bring yourself to accept my more... exotic kin, what about the rest of my family? I can understand my daughter by Mito being ignored given that she passed on long ago. But have you ever even looked upon your great-granddaughter? Tsunade should be everything you look for in family with her golden hair and strong build. Tell me, did you mourn when little Nawaki was killed a a child in the Second Great Shibobi War? But no, you only care when they fit your mold of what is acceptable, just like Odin. And a mortal member of your family simply won't do, will it?" Loki continued on icily.

"Loki, my son, you do not-" Frigga began.

"I am no more your son than I am Odin's, your Majesty. And I made my views on that very clear earlier today. And if you have nothing more to offer than the same empty platitudes I get from that lumbering oaf you call your child then I would prefer you take them to him and bid you good day," Loki sneered ignoring the tears falling from Frigga's eyes as easily as his own had been ignored over the years.

He was tired. Tired of the games and emotional manipulation. Tired of never measuring up. Tired of double standards and conditions to receive a scrap of affection. He had meant it when he said he washed his hands of all of Asgard. If Odin's wife had a problem with that, it was just too bad for her.

"If that is your wish, then so be it. But know this, Loki. You will be my son in my heart no matter what you have come to believe in your own. No barbed words or spiteful actions will destroy that," Frigga vowed before motioning to the guard on the other side of the door to let her out.

Loki pointedly ignored both Frigga's impassioned declaration and the disgusted muttering of the remaining guards after she left that Loki did not deserve her. Frigga was not his family and they were not his people. They could all rot in the depths of Helheim for all he cared.

*****

It was late into the Asgardian night when a presence in the room awoke Loki from his slumber. He swore if it was Sigyn popping up out of the proverbial woodwork to try to force him to recant he would scream. His plan of action proved unnecessary, however, when he saw who it was that was inside his cell.

"Hello, Father," Hela, Goddess of the Dishonored Dead spoke as she stood in the shadown of the farthest corner of the cell.

"Daughter," Loki responded with a sad smile.

"You seem to be making it a habit to engage in hobbies that will lead you to my realm sooner rather than later," Hela speculated with a detached calm.

"Perhaps I am trying to learn from the mistakes that were made with my own upbringing," Loki returned with a self-deprecating grin.

"And if I do not want you in my Realm?" Hela asked.

"I don't think my executioners will much care when they get finished with my second trial," Loki wryly commented.

"I was not aware the Shodai Hokage had committed any crimes against Asgard or the rest of the Nine Realms. It was my understanding that it was Loki Odinson that led the Chitauri," Hela commented in a deadpan.

"Ah, if only the rest of Asgard were as wise as you, my daughter. Although, I fear they would use this opportunity to rid themselves of the stain of my Jotun heritage even if I were not at fault," Loki surmised.

"Perhaps there will be another way. After all if the unnatural one could call the fragment of yourself you left behind with my stepmother back from my realm, perhaps it could happen again," Hela speculated with narrowed eyes.

"That is an interesting proposition. One I would not expect given the strained relationship between us. Tell me, why would you want to help me now?" Loki asked.

"Because helping you hurts the Allfather. And because you spoke out for me. For all of us. And you are... my father," Hela replied, still carefully emotionless in tone and action."

"Hela-" Loki said as he approached her, only to have her recoil further into the shadows.

"No closer, Silvertongue. I help you because it is in my interest. Do not take it for more than that. We are both above such sentiment," Hela warned.

"You have never needed to hide yourself from me, Hela. You know that," Loki insisted as he stepped back to his cot.

If there was a whispered "thank you" meant to be too low for him to hear Loki was kind enough to ignore it as he sat at the edge of his cot to regard his daughter, the light in the room only barely showing half of her face with her flowing back hair and eyes as green as his own. Or at least as green as his Asgardian form's.

"You do realize that this entire dungeon, as well as the metal cuffs around my wrists are warded to deny me access to my magick, don't you?" Loki inquired.

"The Allfather and his minions can only ward what they know. And expect, Hokage-sama," Hela replied as she started to face from sight. "Although I imagine it will be easier to deal with some things should you take a bit of a walk, father."

Loki's face seemed to light with a mixture of mischief and mayhem as he responded, "Quite. Perhaps I will take a stroll sometime soon. I have always had an affinity for forests."

He would swear he saw a smirk that mirrored his own as Hela faded completely from sight. Once she was gone he laid down once again. If he was right my might be feeling a familiar tug soon. And if he did, well he would need to get a bit of a workout before going to check in on his family.

I feel a little bad for Frigga, but I can't honestly say she doesn't deserve it...

Well Frigga and Thor are probably the only two in Asgard that have ever given a damn about Loki beyond his title. I suppose the same could be said of Sigyn, but in this little reality she has divorced him and fled to Vanaheim with her sons because she could not take his personality quirks. Also, It's not that Loki blames Frigga herself, per se, although his gripe about his children is a legitimate one. It's more that he said he was severing all ties with Asgard and he meant it. Giving Frigga a hold over him gives Odin a way to manipulate him and he's done with that.

I can understand that, but still. If she can't accept her son, and his children, then she really has nobody to blame but herself.

Although, given that Loki's own children apparently don't like him much...

Hela has issues on top of her issues. The primary one being her half-rotted side that leaves her DEEPLY self-conscious. In the comics she wears an enchanted cloak to hide her zombie-half and look totally Asgardian. Here, she doesn't have that luxury. She was also ripped from Loki at a young age and placed on the throne of Nifelheim, which is her blessing and her curse. The dead don't care about her appearance but they aren't exactly the best company. She blames Loki for not trying harder to save her from her fate while at the same time acknowledging that there was little he could do about it. She does love her father after a fashion, but don't expect her to be overly emotional about that fact.

Well, not unless Naruto somehow gets to her. Ninja Jesus there has some scary abilities to improve people for the better. And in many ways, Hela is like a much more disturbed version of Neji before the Chuunin exams.

Would be interesting to see, actually. Loki/Naruto bonding, and Naruto promising to help bring Loki and his kids back together.

Well given that Tsunade has all but adopted Naruto what with giving him the Shodai's (Loki's) necklace you could argue that Naruto and Loki are at least as much family as Loki and Tobirama were.

Exactly! And can you really see Naruto not trying to help his family?
