Ranma ½ Ranma Live Action Drama

I'm not seeing hints of attractive female nudity. Of course, that doesn't mean there won't be any, but its getting less likely.

Also, they appear to have skimped on the SFX budget, horribly. If Shan Pu appears, I wonder if her cat form will be a stuffed toy.

D-Addicts has a torrent available for <a href='http://www.d-addicts.com/forum/viewtopic_102110.htm' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>Ranma 1/2 Preview SP</a>. It looks almost like a complete reboot.

Everyone... everyone involved needs to be liquidated in a barrel of acid while alive.
Coming from you, I should be worried.

You're far too optimistic for your own good. The safest course was to believe from the start that this could only end in abominable failure. Every succeeding tidbit has borne that out one hundred percent.

Just to point out, after thinking about this for all of 5 seconds, it looks EXACTLY like a recreation of the show would be sans the super power stuff.

Not saying that means it's good, but the characters in action look spot on (except for who I figure has to be Principal Kuno). Hell, even the brief glimpse of martial arts we saw wasn't utter failure.

Female Ranma looks NOTHING like the original. The martial arts are terrible even without the superhuman levels.

Actually I pretty much completely disagree with all your points.

Well, female Ranma might not, but that's the only major exception. There's only one major difference that I see, which is that she's got a fairly small chest compared to her manga counterpart.

As for the very short bit of action we do see in the posted clip, it's a brief shot of a sparring session between what appears to be Genma and Ranma, and then a moment of the morning brawl at the school. Neither looks more atrocious than I would expect from any other low-budget action film.

You're mistaking my comments for "it looks good" when I was just pointing out, it looks like a fairly faithful recreation of the style and character designs, and is not so utterly godawful that it will forever leave a black stain on the franchise. Hell, 20 years after the original, it's likely that most people will have no interest even in Japan.

Besides, Ranma was all about the comedy. If they can manage a decent job with that, then it will be at least a mildly successful reboot.

AFAICT, this is supposed to be a drama.

Ranma 1/2 is basically Twilight.

Except for vampires who sparkle in the sun you have super powered martial artists who change gender/species with a splash of cold water. Everything else, the teenage "romance" drama and the strange mating practices, is all there.

They should have used the kung fu hustle stick for the action scenes.

I just finished watching the show, to the degree that I was able to follow something which is not yet subtitled or dubbed. It looks like the title ought to be "Ranma vs the Gay Army".

I have to admit, it was a little unexpected to see Genma and Soun throwing Moka Takabishas around. And they did preserve Akane's lack of domestic talents.

If it is better than this...

Then it's a win.

I couldn't watch more than a couple of minutes of that. A group of high school kids in drama class could have produced something better than that French film. So, yeah, it's no real miracle that the Japanese show was better.

Actually, from what I could work out of what was going on, it didn't seem as bad as I was expecting (the Japanese film, not that French one). Akane was a major character - no surprise, she was in the manga as well. But Ranma was just as major a character. Most of the characters didn't seem to deviate too badly from canon - so far as I could tell. I think Kuno, and maybe Nabiki, may have been changed the most. But I admit it's a little hard to tell without understanding most of the dialog.

I almost got carried away and started writing a bit about what happened in the show, but I don't want to put any spoilers here.

In that French piece of crap? It sure looked like it to me.

By the way, here's a youtube link for the Japanese live action show.

Until a translation comes out, I'm going to start shipping Nabiki/Genma-Panda.

Poor girl's sanity must've snapped and she reverted to childhood.

I watched it from end to end.

Five Stars. It was campy at points, and the special effects (or lack thereof) were absurd at times. But...

It was genuinely funny, and faithful to the source material while at the same time doing its own thing so well that I was engaged throughout.

And Scruffy the Janitor would say, seconded. I had a feeling there'd be some differences, but overall this is about what I hoped for.

It's nice to see that Hollywood is not the only place for low-creativity reboots to cash in with lipservice to fans from 20 years ago. Woohoo.

I found a set of English subtitles at

<a href='http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZOAYEVSY' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZOAYEVSY</a>

The link for this was at

<a href='http://www.asiancinematic.com/Japanese-Dramas/Ranma-12.html' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://www.asiancinematic.com/Japanese-Dramas/Ranma-12.html</a>

Which also has links for downloading the show. However, that download has built-in Japanese subtitles at the bottom which interferes with easily reading English subtitles displayed at the bottom. Also, although it may have been my software, I had problems with the video and sound getting out of sync. In the end, what worked best for me was to watch the download from Youtube with these subtitles, starting the subtitles with a delay of 4.5 to 5 seconds.

Although I was expecting the show to be pretty awful, in the end I don't think they did too bad a job. It was farcical with some dramatic bits, pretty much like the manga. They did make some definite changes from the original, such as having the engagement intended for Akane all along, even before Ranma arrived, and having Ranma agree to the engagement (or so he at least pretended) in exchange for information about a possible cure for the curse. But the deviations never made me feel like I wasn't watching a show about Ranma.

Gotta agree with MZephyr. It was pretty much the best possible way to do a live action version of Ranma 1/2. The characters were pretty close to what they ought to have been like, the changes to the narrative made internal sense, and the whole thing was pretty damn funny.

Having said that, I can see some people nitpicking a few points here and there, letting that completely spoil the experience. Which is a shame, because it's not really bad at all.
