Sailor Moon Pet Peeves

In the anime and manga canon the Dark Kingdom was buried under the Earth/ice of the North Pole.

I know.

I also know the dub screwed up a number of items.

For example. Makoto's(i.e. Lita's) mother is quite alive in dub.

You know... as bad as the anime canon continuity is considered by some... It oculd have been worse.

The early promotional materials for Sailor Moon unveiling and distribution in the U.S. were dreadful. I have a old promo video in MPG format with a narrator. Makes comparisons to Power Rangers and Carman Sandiago.

- Girls would love the transformation of Sailor Moon.

- Boys would love the non-stop action.

- Moon's original U.S. name was supposed to be Victoria.

- Mercury's original name was to be Blue.

- Jupiter was to be Sara.

- Mars was to be Dana.

- Venus was to be Carie (or Carey, spelling is phonetic, was not shown).

- Tuxedo Mask was to be 'The masked tuxedo'.

- Beryl originally was to have alien allies from another dimension.

EDIT: I bolded that last, since it is relevant here to the above posts.

It gets much worse than that. I believe that originally one of them was supposed to be confined to a wheelchair and it was supposed to be a mixture of live action and animation. It would have been very, very bad.

However we shouldn't decide that Sailor Moon dubbed was good simply because it wasn't this multi-train wreck. That's a bit like thinking that the first Resident Evil was good because it wasn't the second movie.

I think Abyssal is complaining that people who seemingly use the japanese anime continuity add contradictory parts from the dub.

One of the problems for Sailor Moon is the same one for Ranma, Inuyasha, Evangelion and other staples of fanfiction. I'm fairly sure that a lot of the recent fanfic authors haven't actually ever seen the shows or the manga, so they know about as much as someone who only knows about Gold Digger from Anime Addventure.
Common mistakes such as assuming that Mamoru cheats on Usagi or that Setsuna's under a spell (generally by people who don't even know what a geis is).

Yep. I find it heavily irritating how so many people mix in the Dub alongside anime and manga. The anime and manga are at least somewhat compatible with each other but the Dub's so-called canon is a entirely different case.

Petpeeve: People saying the Silver Milleniunm lasted for a thousand years. The kingdom is titled the Silver Millenium.

Main Entry: milÀlenÀniÀum?
Pronunciation: \m?-?le-nþ-?m\
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural -nia \-nþ-?\ or milÀlenÀniums
Etymology: New Latin, from Latin mille thousand + New Latin -ennium (as in biennium)
Date: circa 1638
1 a: the thousand years mentioned in Revelation 20 during which holiness is to prevail and Christ is to reign on earth b: a period of great happiness or human perfection 2 a: a period of 1000 years ; especially : one reckoned from the beginning of the Christian era <at the start of the third millennium> b: a 1000th anniversary or its celebration
Notice the bold.

Pet-peeve of the day: The repeated usage of Youma post the Dark Kingdom Arc. Once Metallia is dead, so where any Youma that might have managed to survive up to that point.

in other words DiC lived up to its name. and for Cloverfield, well there's a reason why a movie with the same named sucked, the name is cursed.

Petpeeve: Sailor Earth.

Mamoru is earth's living avatar just like Usagi is the moon's avatar. He is earth's equivalent of a senshi. Their is no missing sister he has running around or anything like that. Even in the future Helios or Chibi-Usa will probably inherit it (Though more likely Helios considering his connection to Mamoru) and in the case of Chibi-Usa she takes the name of her Mother not her father.

Petpeeve: Calling Kakyuu, Sailor Kinmoku. She is Sailor Kakyuu.

Fic writers A. probably don't know the names of the other kinds and B. want something that sounds Japanese (albeit which it is)

Youma, Droids, Daimons, Phages, Lemures. Why is it so hard for them to look these things up. Even though Post!Canon they should be fighting something new and not remnants of weak old villains.

Another Petpeeve: The Maboroshi no Ginzuishou translates into the Illusionary/Phantom Silver Crystal not the Silver Imperial Crystal. The latter is dubbing.

Setsuna in her introduction was forced to follow three laws and only three laws.

"Pluto," Queen Selenity says. "You watch the space-time door. You are the soldier who controls time and space. There are three things you must not do. First, you may not cross time. Second, you can never leave the door you must protect. And third..."á

"Pluto."

"Yes, Queen Selenity."

"The third thing you must not do: You mustn't stop time. You and the garnet rod you carry are endowed with the power to move time. But no matter what happens, you must never stop time. If you ever violate that law..."

If you ever violate that law... You will give up your life.""
Notice how Setsuna broke all these laws in the name of protecting others in both canons. She is quite willing to martyr herself in the name of protecting others. She broke the third law in the name of saving the universe from unraveling due to a paradox.

If there was a law saying Setsuna has to get rid of people for disturbing the time line she would never be coldblooded enough to do it. She'd break that law too. She was the Outer senshi the least willing to sacrifice Hotaru and the most willing to believe in Usagi after all in both versions. She was also the most straight forward to the inners.

How exactly do you "disturb a timeline" anyway? Even if we go with the idea that they cause bad events to happen nobody seems to notice the possibility that Setsuna could just slip the mom a morning after pill or cause the dad to miss the train he would have caught to meet her in the first place. It's like the entire fanfic world is convinced that she's so unimaginitive that she has to try to kill people after they're already a threat.

It's really lazy writing especially considering Setsuna always appeared to be the nicest compared to Haruka and Michiru.

I always found that strange. Most of the traits given to Setsuna apply to Michiru more than her. She's the one with the Mirror that could see anything, the one that was calm and distant. She and Haruka were the ones who went against Usagi twice and tried to manipulate Galaxia.

I somehow never experienced Manipulative!Setsuna until I came here.

To be fair to the dub Setsuna was still the nicest of the three. This is just awful characterization.

I haven't, but I'm one short step away from being a Pluto-fanboy. Out of all the senshi she's my fav.

Two of those people are girls; which is the real boy. :D

On a related note, why is Haruka in that picture. Mamoru and Seiya I can understand - they were Usagi main love interest and unnoticed backup love interest respectively - but I thought Haruka's relationship with Michiru was established, in a roundabout sort of way, early on.

I think I remember some sort-of-flirting (but that might have been fandom/bad translation) but that's it.

All three kissed Usagi mangaverse. Not to mention Seiya was designed by Naoko as a fusion of Haruka and Mamoru. The anime also followed this characterization which is why Haruka and Seiya didn't get along. They were too similar. Though Seiya was more emotional because he was younger.

The Starlights are the fangirls version of Haku. We prefer them male.

Petpeeve: Chaos existing in the anime timeline. He was never mentioned by name in the anime and after Galaxia was freed from his control it was released into the hearts of every human being along with the Light of hope.

Petpeeve: Hotaru being shy after S. After awakening as Sailor Saturn/being reborn as a baby she was pretty outgoing and confident in herself in both versions though much more in the manga where she was surrounded by a bunch of friends as she walked home with Setsuna.
