SpaceBattles Server Problems

I think anyone going there noticed by now that the server has issues and that the lags seem to last longer as time go. Anyone know precisely what the hell is going on and if anything is being planned to do something about it?

I say it's the same thing that happened to the old Spacebattles server. The threads are becoming too long, and they need to cut the length of the threads. Maybe down to 100-200 pages or so.

Frankly, I'm surprised that Invisionfree has next to none of those problems, despite this very board having quite a few threads with hundreds of pages. It's a lot more reliable than Spacebattles ever was.

The community is shit compared to SB, though.

This forum has one thing working in its favor though, at least frm a bandwidth issue...

True... the threads have gotten longer, but as they've gotten longer and time has gone by, we have far less members on at any given time...

All one need to do is look at the number of users on the forum at any given time, and compare that to 2 and 4 years ago...

You will see it is way, way down...

I heard something about the owner starting to part host the server with someone else, and they have something draining bandwidth too now.

iofficespace: who broke the forums?
Wakka: Probably Kier
Wakka: Server's not even responding to ping
Xon: iofficespace, can't even *ping* spacebattles
Xon: either suprise upgrade with no warning, or the machine it was on failed
Xon: so I expect posibly a few days of downtime

Could be the database again. Last time it did eat all space on the hard-drive IIRC.

It's up again, though still laggy as hell. Such is the price one must pay for popularity.

(goes over to the Suggestions thread)

[edit]
Belay that. It's stopped again. I'm stuck loading on the page explaining what happened.

... what does the DMCA have to do with it? Dammit, now you've got me even more curious! Live and load it already, dammit!

Ok, here seems to be what happened. SB was hit by a DMCA request due to a "Picture". Here's one of SB's admins on it.

No, it wasnt a server problem, Somehow we managed to trip a DMCA alert for some photos in the Pacific Rim thread, I have no idea how or why but they took us down until we promosed to take down the offending content, unfortnetly i have NO idea what the offending content IS so ive just removed the threaad for the time being
I think it was just WB being over-eager but can everyone please be careful before linking to leaked photos or videos just incasae

Cheers

It's still laggy as fuck though. :s It's in its death throes again. No wonder the server going kaput was everybody's first assumption.

And there goes a SMod going full retard. So scared now they deleted a post where I was just saying that kind of thing makes me want to get a bootleg instead of seeing the movie. Coming down hard my ass. Such a comment has nothing to do with DMCA.

If the site goes down and stops responding to pings it is probably another DMCA takedown request knocking the server offline till the offending post is removed.

The admins would have mentioned it, if for no other reason than to keep people from reposting it.

It's the post rate. A single heavily active thread in BROB can spam ~6-700 posts per day all within a very small window. Throw in Likes and other junk, this is slamming a massive load all at once into the forum.

Spacebattles is running with 4GB of ram and on harddrives from 2008 or so. This is quite crippling as there is a design flaw where Xenforo doesn't scale with long threads well and eats a lot of memory as a result.
