This is nothing new, but the lag times of late have been ~7 to 10pm EST.

Spacebattles is ALWAYS down. The only times it's not is from 8:00-10:00 PST.

Maybe for you, but I've consistently been able to view any time between 6 AM to 7 PM [EST] (3 AM to 4 PM [PST]) and I'm usually trying to sleep at 10 PM [EST] (7 PM [PST]).

Ahem. That first time you listed? It's exactly what 10:00 would be in PST.

Um... no it's not. Unless they changed PST from something other than 3 hours behind EST.

Ah. Sorry, for some reason I got it reversed, thinking it three hours AHEAD of EST. My mistake. Still, I'm talking about the hours I'm awake. Maybe it is up during those hours, but I'm asleep.

Sigh. Again?

...yep, again. Does SpaceBattles own their own servers, or is the site hosted by a third party? Because if it's the former, I can't see why they don't upgrade and expand the servers, and if it's the latter... actually, I'm not sure what they could do. But there must be something they can do to fix this.

According to a thread on SB, they're sharing a server with another site, and when that site gets hit heavily SB lags.

It seems like it's been completely down for a few hours now tho :(

Yeah, something hit their servers like a truck. I don't suppose their's anyone around who knows what the hell happened?

Not quite correct.

There is a site sharing a server with Spacebattles, but that's peanuts.

The server strain comes from housing a bigass forum with zounds of posters in a server setup that people who know more about this kind of thing than I do have described as "laughable".

And yes, this doesn't seem to be lag.

They are down, Jim.

Whether down-for-good or down-for-the-time-being remains to be seen.

It is either a DMCA takedown again, or hardware failure.

I'm hoping it is a DMCA takedown again, as that is the easiest to recover from.

In other news I've gotten banned. If anyone could be so kind as to forward me an e mail address that wont go to a bots trash file. I'd like to at least discuss this event with someone in management over there who might actually be objective about this

I'm not sure if there is anyone in charge there who might be objective about it (especially as I've no idea what you did, or what someone decided you had done), but maybe someone has Reaperman's addy, or is willing to PM him there, and possibly get you in touch with him.

He, along with several other people, went on a bit of an off topic rant against the moderators. He and Kalaong got banned for off topic posting.

I might be a bit biased, as it was my topic they were going off in, but I have no sympathy.

OK, so they got banned for ranting about the mods. The fact that it was off-topic is irrelevant, save that if it were on-topic, you'd probably have been banned, too, for whatever excuse they could replace 'creating a thread for people to rant about the mods in' with.

I can say this, because I've seen people go way, waaaayy off topic, and not get banned, but honestly pointing out how shitty and unreasonable some of the mods there are is certainly likely to be verboten.

Not really surprised that Kaal got himself banned, he seems to have a habit of really going off. No idea about Rabe.

And currently the site appears to be sorta down. Not that the lag is so bad it can't be reached (or at least it doesn't seem like that).

No, you go to the site and you get this message.

"SB is turned off?? Say it ain't so! If only I had something, ANYTHING else to do but SB is my life!" is how I picture your reaction right now.

How accurate was I? Be honest on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being "not at all" and 10 being "totally accurate." Just go ahead and post your resp.... oh, yeah, forgot about the whole SB being turned off thing.

Not sure if it's been hacked or what.

I'm guessing hacked. Which sucks because it had been lag-free for the majority of the day.

Nope, this is scheduled maintenance. Something regarding fucked up forum account permissions that screwed around with available user options (such as the ability to delete posts).

More specifically, a botched account(s) import from the vBulletin days that resulted in one fucking mess that required a clean sweep/reset of said permissions (and the forced downtime to do so).

That being said, it's one more band-aid on the whole server lag mess (the server is just too damned old, hardware-wise, and couldn't keep up with the meteoric growth of new registered users, and thus sheer post count that needs to be regularly indexed and backed up).

Lastly, the only guy with the full/complete means to resolve this, Kier Darby himself, has no free time whatsoever to get involved, in spite of SB's admin team's efforts to contact him.

I can't help but feel a tad very bitter about it all, even though Kier is pretty much lead developer of all XenForo development (and thus fucking busy is one damned understatement).

EDIT: Back up again... for now. Spoke too soon. Third time's the charm?

OTOH, today's lag was considerably reduced compared to the last few weeks months; guess a lot of people finally got around to disabling e-mail alerts (one more feature that contributed to the lag).

Hmmm... that site might benefit from switching to RSS feeds rather than email alerts... that way it need not constantly be sending out a bazillion email alerts but merely update xml index tags for threads... but I do not know enough about the system to say for sure...

It does not affect me personally either way, as I've never bothered becoming a member, despite being a bigger Sci-Fi fan than an anime one. Been tempted to a 1/2 dozen times over the last 15 years though.
