TFF Original Space Adventure RPG

#1
I'm considering trying to write some original scifi, whether for a book, RPG or something else I'm not sure. Either way, I've got some ideas for a mostly-original scifi universe based on real science that is still epic and awesome. So this thread is for discussion and interest-measuring.

The basic premise: Space adventuring across unknown worlds in the 26th century. This ship trails after bigger explorer class vessels who are mapping and charting unknown star systems, alien civilizations and lost Earth colonies established centuries ago before FTL travel became possible. The crew would find danger, excitement, and weirdness at every turn.

A lost human colony established by religious fanatics threatens a local alien race's survival.

A lost colony established by an ally of humanity in a recent war believes humans are it's enemies, and responds accordingly.

An unknown alien race is attacking and wiping out any species it believes might be a threat or competition, and the crew of the Earth ship must discover who it is and stop them.

And many others. The sky is most definitely NOT the limit.

GRAHAM EDWARD LAMBERT

Age: 42, looks closer to 29

Birthplace: Liverpool, UK

Description: approximately 5' 10", wiry, muscular build; Dark Brown, wavy hair in a military cut and cleanshaven; Dark Blue eyes. Has a noticable scar on his left cheek (a jagged 'Y' shape at the corner of his mouth), and a fainter one along his hairline. The bottom of his nose is bent slighty to the left.

Personality: Despite his fearsome appearence, Lambert is a kind, gentle person, with academic leanings. But do not mistake this for passivity; mess with his friends, or anyone under his care, and you'll regret it.

History: Lambert's family has an illustrious history. For a thousand years, ever since the Spanish Armada was was defeated by Sir Francis Drake, Lamberts have served their country, and latterly their homeworld in the military, and the halls of academia. Graham is the product of this long tradition of warriors and scholars, with the born instincts and reflexes of a pilot, and the agile mind and wit of the sort of teacher you prayed to get at school.

Passing nearly at the top of his class at the Academy, qualified as a Ships' Helmsman, Shinigami pilot, and Mustang flyer, he served quietly on a number of ships, slowly working up the ranks, until the outbreak of the Neelaa war. About 8 months in, he was taken from the pilot's roster of USNS Agamemnon, and assigned to a crash course on the Command Track. Afterwards, he was assigned as XO to a destroyer, USNS Broadsword, in one of the Coalition's backwater postings to work up before being sent to the front, specifically Groombridge 1618 and Admiral Ramajee's taskforce.

It was there that Graham first met Lt. Constance Giiresbee, and an immortal parnership had it's first seeds sown.

Name:
Daniel (Danny) Dretz

Age: 19

Birthplace:
Aurora, Colorado

Physical Description:
Short cropped brown hair, brown eyes, 5'7'' lithe build, cleanshaven. A few small scars mark his hands, fingers and arms, the largest being a long line across his right forearm.

Personality:
At 19, Danny is still what one might call a 'wide-eyed youth'. Always eager to help, fun-loving, and somewhat lacking in the experience department, Danny is nonetheless willing to buckle down and concentrate on any task that comes his way. He generally likes to get along with everyone, but can be kind of reserved, especially around new people (especially new species) and still posesses a passionate pride that get him into trouble.

Prefered Jobs aboard the ship (in order of preferance high-low):
Security, Gunner, Navigator.

Question!

Is the crew of the ship strictly human only or can there be stuff like androids, cyborgs, aliens, genetically-engineered bio-roids, etc?

What are the specs of the ship in question?

That's all the questions I have for now.

Okay, in response to your first question:

Humanity is part of a coalition of worlds, but the majority of those species operate their own ships because their physiologies are too different from eachother to really work together. A flourosilicone-based lifeform from a lava planet can't exactly bunk with an ammonia breather from an ice planet.

Humans genetically engineered a few species to achieve true sentience, such as dolphins, chimpanzees, octopi and penguins. As for sentient androids, there are a few, but they have to be built and they remain a minority. They are on some crews but it's cheaper to just use humans or remote-controlled robots. There are some cyborgs as well, but they too are kind of a minority. One race has created synthetic humanoids to act as their eyes and ears among the universe.

As for the ship herself, we'd work that out ourselves. She wouldn't be a frontline explorer, mind you. She'd be a small cruiser, or destroyer converted for some survey work. Following in the footsteps of the bigger explorers, and finding the stuff they missed.

However, her weapons would be strictly reality based. Lasers, missiles, fusion drives, stuff like that.

Character Bio:

Name:
Aarik, 'Gaghi' Rathell

Age: 21

Birthplace: ??? America

Physical Description: Gahghi's, as he prefers to be called, physical appearance is technically unknown, he wear's a full body suit of Powered armor constantly, he claims that it assists him in his duty's as the ship's Purser and never remove's it, the increased strength it gives him make's most people wary of angering him, although most of the strength granted by the suit goes into allowing Gahgi to move in it, since he isn't even average in physical ability he wear's the armor to make up for his own physical weakness, although his strength HAS been slowly going up from the small workout he's been getting from his work, it's lessened by the suit itself.

Personality: Gaghi is very introverted, usually keeping to himself, he also has frequent headache's and fevers, this is a result of sinus problem's, and the reason his suit's helmet has a filter installed, to prevent the spread of cold or fever in the confines of the ship, this is also why his suit has an expensive sonic canceler on it's chest, to mute the world so he can work when his head ache's, it is also useful for getting people to shut up, his helmet's earpieces are connected to it and allow him to hear if he turns them on while the canceler is active, usually he leaves it on while working, this result's in incident's he considers funny where new crew mates think they have gone deaf when they enter the area of the ship he's in.

When not muting the world he likes listening to music, his earpieces double as headphone's, also enjoys reading. Gaghi also dislike's using his mouth to speak, and has a device installed in his suit, most of it in the suit's throat and mouth region, that allows him to transmit his thought's directly into sound.

Ship duty's:

Ships Purser/Quartermaster (The person in charge of all supplies food/parts/money/weaponry/ammunition and storage, also technically the boss of the ships cooks. prefers Purser as it's shorter and quicker to say and remember. Along with the Navigator, is the second 'highest' position on the ship in order of importance.) Is a good gunner, also helps by ferrying things around the ship for people occasionally.

Quote: "The Captain leads us 'there' the Navigator points where 'there' is and the Purser make's sure we have what we need to get 'there'." is a quote he uses to explain the importance of having a good Purser.

Gaghi is (Supposedly) from Hebrew, it (Apparently) means Roaring Beast, He uses it because he says his name isn't impressive enough.

I got Gaghi from Evangelion, the giant shark Angel.

Character Bio

Name: ADD-1337 "Adel/Adders"

Age: 2

Birthplace: A robotics lab in Australia

Race: Sentient multipurpose android

Physical Description:

ADD-1337's physical form is a levitating metal sphere of mechanical nature that is approximately half a metre in diameter. His metal plating are made of a light yet extremely strong alloy to protect his intricate electronic parts. Though use of a holographic projector, ADD-1337 is able to maintain a somewhat human persona via a hologram.
His usual hologram is one of many stock images he has in storage and often switches between them according to his mood.

In addition to his real body, ADD-1337 has a large mech shell which he can integrate into for combat and exploration.

This is what it looks like:

Personality: ADD-1337, due to a glitch in his programming (or a personal enjoyment of messing around with people's minds) has two distinct personality. Adel and Adders

His usual personality, Adel is generally good-nature and quite helpful. This personality eagerly follows orders to the best of his abilities. When not on duty, Adel can be often found doing experiments or harmless pranks to test what he is capable of. Often claims to have a sense of justice and won't stand for any morally wrong actions. Adel refers to all organics as, "Chief".

However, when under stressful condition or feeling moody, his other personality comes out.

This other personality, called Adders has a cruel streak and often does cruel pranks on anything that he deems to most likely cause a humorous reaction. He seems to enjoy observing death and destruction and occasionally causing it as well. Adders is also far more assertive then Adel, often acting on impulses and ignoring orders that are deemed unnecessary. Adders has a definite sense of pride, and considers himself superior to all organics and all droids. Adders refers to all organics as "Meat-bags".

Bio: ADD-1337 was created as a prototype, for a line of multifunction, self-sufficient droids designed to be able to work in virtually any condition. However, shortly after his creation, the project was scrapped due to lack of funding. One of the scientists of the project however made ADD-1337 self-aware before telling him to live his life as he pleased.

ADD-1337 wandered around for about half a year after taking the equal rights test and ended up working for a Private Investigator. For the next six months, ADD-1337 worked along side a man named Maddison Gray, handling mostly the paperwork, information compilation, profiling and other odd-jobs. ADD-1337 picked up a bunch of things during his time as an assistant to the PI such as a whole bunch of gadgets, a couple of weapons, a sense of justice (somehow, since Gray's sense of justice was quite messed up), and his nickname, Adel.

Adel was quite content with his life until Gray messed up, bad. Gray took a job which got him involved with the wrong kind of people and in the end of it all, Gray was dead and Adel working for a crime syndicate.

For about three months, Adel was forced to do a lot of dirty work, from hacking to assassination. For the first month Adel tolerated it hoping for a chance to escape and bring down the syndicate. However after being made to kill an innocent little girl, Adel couldn't take it any more and promptly locked his personality away, and from the depths of his programming, came Adders.

Adders was the ideal droid for the syndicate's purposes and took delight in the jobs that the Syndicate gave him. At least until the syndicate tried to install an obedience chip. No one is sure what happened but one thing was for certain, every member of the syndicate were dead and Adders vanished without a trace.

Six months later, a droid with the ID number ADD-1337 joined the military. After three months of training, upgrades and therapy, ADD-1337 AKA Adel/Adders applied for a position on a ship heading out for the Coalition exploration expedition and was accepted.

Preferred Ship's Duties: assistant mechanic, assistant medic, combatant, scout, computer technician, entertainment system(?)

Actual Duties: Repairs on the exterior of the ship, search and recover in dangerous environments, security droid, torture device.

Is this kind of character fine?

Name: Zeros Adrallamech

Age: 25

Birthplace: Ascension (Planetary Coordinates:N1877.-2113.-117)
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 179
Hair: Black
Eyes: Green

Bio: Being born on a low gravity colony, Zeros is tall and fairly thin. While he did undergo physical training for higher gravity, he is far below the average in terms of strength and endurance. While he favors intellectual engagements, he is fairly fast and agile for short bursts, allowing him to surprise people in physical contests if they aren't prepared.

Personality: While a fairly friendly person, Zeros often keeps some emotional distance, since he has witnessed his fair share of the accidents and disasters that can happen in an isolated location. That being said, he spends a significant percent of his time reviewing materials and performing maintenence checks. In his free time, Zeros splits his time between sparring with other crewmembers and leisure reading. Zeros is intensely fascinated with philosophy and to a lesser degree, religion, finding attempts to explain and understand the unknowable endlessly entertaining.

Notes: Zeros has crafted a pair of monomolecular daggers, to offset his lack of physical strength. While they are capable of cutting through nearly anything with minimal effort, they have a habit of cutting through anything with minimal effort. Because of this, Zeros normally leaves them in Electromagnetic sheathes to prevent them from damaging things. He prefers to use these rather than projectile weaponry, as higher calibur weapons have occasionally caused him to break a bone or two.

Post: Engineering, Chief Engineer
Zeros has studied nearly every field on engineering and technology, though he has yet to master any of them. His broad range of knowledge makes him suited to manage the engineering department, as he most likely knows at least something about whatever problems crop up. Zeros' specialties lie with Engine Drives and Experimental weaponry.

Note: Didn't feel like naming the colony, so I decided to create a Notation for colony locations. Feel free to tweak it around.
Breakdown
The Letter: Currently will be either an N or O. N= New(Founded After FTL Travel) O= Old(Founded Before FTL Travel/Earth)
First Number: X Coordinates in tens of Light years
Second Number: Y Coordinates in tens of Light years
Third Number: Z Coordinates in tens of Light Years

I'll probably add more later. Just wanted to express my interest in playing around with this.

Not bad... Though we aren't getting a lot of female characters.

Anyway, the basic political setup:

The year is 2543. It's been fourteen years since the Local Group Coalition, including Earth, fought in a war with the Neelaa, a humanoid alien species with a very large, very advanced empire. They had sought to forcibly integrate the species of the Local Group into their sphere of influence, but we fought back. We were losing the war badly and were on the verge of defeat by the end of the second year, when a joint Coalition research project on Earth discovered Otherspace-An alternate universe which granted us far faster FTL speeds than the spacewarp drives the rest of the known galaxy used. This technology swiftly turned the war in our favor, though by the end of it the best we could manage was a draw. The victory was only won when the Tur-Han, another superpower, intervened, impressed with the tenacity of this small alliance of worlds against an enemy so much bigger and more advanced than them.

In the wake of the conflict, the Coalition has kept Otherspace drive technology to themselves, but released it, slowly, to the civilian markets of their worlds. The Turee and a few other powers have become interested in this new drive, and in the worlds of the Coalition, leading to a cautious but mostly cordial relationship to grow between Earth, it's allies and the rest of the known galaxy.

Five years ago, a single, unmanned, unknown starship tore through Coalition defenses and was only stopped by the heroic actions of the Earth Starship Bahamut, the first Otherspace equipped vessel. In the wake of this unknown threat, and the hundreds of lost colonies the Coalition has established over the centuries via slowboat vessels, the militaries of the Coalition have sent their ships out with Otherspace drives to explore the galaxy, looking for lost colonies, new allies... And new enemies.

THE COALITION HOME SYSTEMS AND SPECIES NAMES

(Human star system names used for simplicity)

Sol: Humans (Dolphins, Chimpanzees, Penguins, Octopi)
Gliese 876: "Aghasti"
Delta Pavonis: Birrin
61 Virginis: "Hoppers"
Tau Ceti: Jii'ka
47 Ursae Majoris: Altos, Grendels
Groombridge 1618: Linkara

(I'll have specs up for the alien species, but if you have an idea for one, run it by me. Remember, there is only one, maybe two confirmed humanoid species other than humans around, so unless it's really creative, don't make the aliens look like Mr. Spock, okay?)

EDIT: Zerohour: Good post, though each system would have it's own individual name given to it by the colonists, and the name of the system as it was cataloged on Earth. Though an alien race can use their own system and have their own names.

Just so you know, we've had FTL travel for about a century, but it wasn't much better than our slowboats. Otherspace drive technology has been around for 12 years.

How are things like Cybernetics viewed? Psionics?

Is there things like Teleporters or Shuttles are used? Is the Ship going to Land on the planets?

Communication ranges, some area's that cannot be reached? Is HQ a call away?

Cybernetics are generally reserved for treating injuries, as cloning back, say, an entire arm takes several months to do otherwise the cells will start to break down due to a form of progeria. Using them for soldiers ala Ghost in the Shell is generally not recommended because the maintenance issues can screw with a ship's logistical plans. It's generally regarded as cheaper to train troops to coordinate via visual input (being able to process several video feeds on a screen at once) than to give them neural implants. It is an option and it has it's utility, but again, cost (not to mention weight) is the deciding factor. If you can give a normal human strength-enhancing suits and body armor that allows them to match a cyber-enhanced human for a quarter of the price involved in surgically altering a human and it's a lot lighter, then you know which the military will go for.

As for Psionics, they don't exist in humans... But there are a few examples of psychics among some refugee races that immigrated to Earth. Oddly enough, the majority are humanoid enough to pass for human without too much trouble. It's a conundrum.

Otherspace offers the possibility of tranporters (the current theory is to send a person into Otherspace while using an energy shield and sending them down to pop out on a planetary surface), but the technology is very experimental and if it is mounted on a starship, is only for testing purposes. Shuttles are the main way up or down off a planet, but most smaller ships can land on planets.

Communications in real-time can take place if you're within the Coalition Otherspace Network (CON), but outside of this messages are sent much more slowly. HQ is most definitely not just a call away. And there are spots that calls will not reach.

Forgive the double-post, but I have to run to school soon. I'm revising the rules a little-While this will take place on an Earth ship, there are some aliens who would work just fine on an Earth ship. In addition, if enough people sign up another world's ship can be added to serve as a partner to the Earth ship.

If you'd like to contribute your own alien species, or build a profile for one of the existing ones (even if it's based on an existing alien), you are free to do so. I have the first story arc in mind but it's flexible enough for some significant detail changes, like alien crewmembers or first contacts to be made. The Coalition's policy on less-advanced cultures is to generally wait until they're at an early 21st century Earth level of technology (radio telescopes and the like) before making first contact. But, unlike later Star Trek, if a sentient species is in danger of extinction, Coalition ships are to use any ethical means at their disposal necessary to save them. Or, if they've already made contact with aliens, it's kind of pointless to hide our existence from them no matter their tech level.

Anyway, here's a profile of our first alien species:

Name: Birrin
Homeworld: !Hi'ir! (Delta Pavonis 4)
Status: Coalition Founding Member
History: The Birrin have been in space for only three Earth centuries. Due to fierce competition with a near-sentient species on their homeworld (known as Pseudoraptors to humans), much of their early attempts at civilization building were torn apart by the 'raptors, who were much stronger and faster than the Birrin but only slightly dumber. Nevertheless, the Birrin persevered and were able to reach an industrial revolution by Earth's 20th century AD.

However, due to the conditions they evolved in, it was not long before the Birrin began to engage in warfare with eachother, finally culminating in the development and use of nuclear weapons in two world wars. The devastation wrought by these weapons allowed one nation to essentially rule over the planet by the 22nd century, the same one that made nuclear weapons. However, much like humans, the Birrin knew the dangers associated with nuclear warfare, so, in order to try and resolve differences without the threat of extinction, all weapons bigger than a machine gun were placed under joint-government supervision, and international disputes were settled with an organized system of dueling, which was further diversified into sporting events not dissimilar to Earth's Olympics.

First contact with the Birrin was made in 2380-Due to an oddity with the Birrin sun's electromagnetic field, conventional radio communications were not being read properly, so while the presence of life was known in the Delta Pavonis system, intelligent life wasn't known until then. By the same token, the Birrin were aware that Sol had a very good chance of harboring life but had been unable to get any radio communications from us. A cordial relationship developed after FTL communications were discovered, and joint colonization efforts were undertaken on a number of nearby worlds. The Birrin were the first to join the proposed Coalition in 2450, for trade and defense against pirates, and became firmly entrenched in it during the Neelaa War. They were among the races who contributed the most to the Otherspace Drive project and were the first to organize official races using the technology.

Physiology: The Birrin evolved from quadrilaterally symmetrical creatures which resembled polychaete worms. Over the course of evolution they became secondarily bilaterally symmetrical. The upper and lower limbs devolved, and the lateral appendages became strong legs for the move to land. Two of the four eyes took over primary vision, and while the third eye vanished completely, the 4th evolved a long stalk and migrated toward the top of the head to give good all around vision.

Internal organs also adapted, with two of the four stomachs becoming lungs.

Birrin limbs contain many sensory organs, including vibration and taste sensors. The second pair of limbs changed radically and is now held above the body, the vibration sensor adapted for hearing, and the taste sensors elongating and becoming a sensitive antennae used to detect scent, and to communicate via semaphore.

The first set of limbs became arms, carrying delicate hands to handle food, use tools and groom others, while carrying a long curved claw to stab and grip prey or rivals. This claw is present also on the rearmost limbs, and can slash enemies from the rear, while on the foremost pair of walking limbs it became a sensitive vibration detector, and when held to the ground can sense movement through the soil.

The Birrin brain is long and extends a third of the way down the neck, protected by internal bony cages. The neck itself is not as flexible as many earth creatures, and does not need to be as the stalked eyes can move independently.

The long legs and broad foot pads suited the swampy habitat they evolved in, spreading weight to stop them sinking into mud.

The Birrin are oxygen breathing, carbon-based lifeforms like humans and evolved on a planet with a similar climate and gravitational pull, hence the two species regularly engage in joint colonization efforts and officer exchange programs.

Basic Birrin body form.

Close-up of a Birrin head.

An infamous picture of Birrin genocide taken during their last world war.

A Birrin baby and human child are examined by scientists while they play, to study interactions between the two species.

A psuedoraptor-The main Birrin language names it a Brii-ar!! which is also a vulgar profanity.

(Birrin concept and pictures borrowed from Abiogenisis from Deviantart.com. The alien was just too well developed for me to change anything. My own original alien species will be up next)

True, but space voyages are much longer and much more stressful. Besides, they have much better birth control in the future and relationships are not frowned upon unless they're between an enlisted spacer and an officer. ;)

Okay, couple more questions.

What is mankind's opinion on sentient machines?

Is there galaxy wide internet connection?

Have mankind developed the technological equivalent of magic bags?

They're tough to build (usually by lonely genius college professors) but granted equal rights if they can pass cognitive tests. If they commit crimes they're arrested and put on trial. We have plenty of room and we've given sentience AND equal rights to dolphins, chimpanzees, penguins and octopi (a few colonies even have sentient elephants who work as farmers in exchange for beer), and the majority of sentient AIs are perfectly happy with their lives. If they aren't, they generally update themselves or get transferred to places where they will be happy.

Humanity is still the same in some ways, but in this, we've at least learned enough to not create sentient life and then treat it like it's below us. It never ends well.

Not galaxy wide, but within the 22 star systems that make up the Coalition, FTL communications are basically instantaneous. It started as the Coalition Otherspace Communications Network but since Otherspace tech was released to the general public, private communications companies have run with it. In short yes, there is a form of the Internet among the Coalition worlds and integrated colonies, and it will continue to grow as more colonies are found and reintegrated with the Coalition thanks to Otherspace transceivers. Though the further you get from the Coalition network, the more time delay there is.

No, though they are working on it. The human ship we'd focus on would get unmanned Otherspace probes with unusual technologies to test from back home. So the ship could have all sorts of Mad Scientist inspired gear.

Name: Hector Fallax

Age: 26

Birthplace: Salem, Oregon, USA, Earth

Height: 6 Foot, 7 Inches

Weight: 134 Pounds

Hair: Dark Red

Eyes: Blue with tiny red flecks, making it look a little purple.

General Appearance Notes: Tall and skinny, he keeps clean but is very disorganized and sloppy in appearance. His hair is a mess. He has a few days worth of stubble, as he only remembers to shave every few days. His clothes are always rumpled, and are a bit too large so they hang loosely from his frame. His body itself is covered in tiny scars.

Bio: Entry 19126: Subject - Hector Fallax

Subject Hector Fallax has had a long standing history throughout his formative years of both a genius level intellect and a lack of empathy bordering on sociopathy. His seemingly effortless mastery of all non physical elements of schooling, and utter failure at physical ones resulted in being ostracized by his classmates, at least for a time.

(Footnote - This refers to events located in his sealed juvenile record. Check that file for more detail, as they include: Leaving the severed head of a classmate's pet on their doorstep, rigging a classmate's portable gaming system to deliver a very painful and damaging shock when activated, and slipping a homemade incendiary device into a disliked teacher's car.)

This lifestyle persisted for many years, until news spread that no one truly dared to try anything against him, leaving him isolated from most human contact. Apparently, without distractions, he threw himself into his learning, and began attending college at the age of 15. He seemed to calm down, and his past looked to be behind him.

Until the kidnapping incident. All that is known is that, forced to work with a partner, he soon fell into his old ways and left a trap for her that burned her hand very badly. The woman's boyfriend then confronted him, and began an altercation. While outmatched physically, he revealed that he had cobbled together a few gadgets for self defense, and used them well. After it was over, the last time he was seen was reported as having "The creepiest [censored] stare I'd ever seen," as reported by the EMS, as he watched them taking the nearly mortally wounded man to a medical center.

He vanished at this point, and remained gone for 16 days. No ransom note was delivered, no calls were made, nothing. Then, he was seen walking to his dorm room with a pleasant smile, and chatting cheerfully and randomly with stunned passersby.

He himself remembers nothing of the 16 days he was gone, and has a very foggy memory of his whole life before that point. Medical testing reveals that he had very invasive surgery performed on him, especially on his brain. The doctors report said that his body was altered chemically, resulting in a slightly more durable physical form, though still only average by human standards.
He is noted for having a higher tolerance for most toxins, as well as being able to resist small amounts of electric shock, as well as finding larger ones less damaging. His hand-eye coordination is exceptional, and his vision is beyond human, able to perceive more details, at greater distances.

The truly baffling part of the surgery involves his brain. Simply put, every doctor that has taken a look at the data has no idea what to make of the seemingly random surgery that took place. All agree that despite all that, he remains as intelligent and capable as ever, the only effect it seems to have has was on his personality.
On that note, he had become exceedingly eccentric, though he is found by all to be happy and cheerful, though his sense of humor can be quite disturbing at times (Perhaps a remnant of his own personality?).

After completing his studies, he suddenly applied and was accepted for a position of science officer on a starship.

Personality: Manic, hyperactive, and very weird. He flits between many ideas, thoughts, and emotions, seemingly without pattern, in mere moments. He remains cheerful at almost all times. However, during times of great stress, he sometimes exhibits a vicious and cruel nature, followed by a blindingly painful headache. Afterward, he has only a vague recollection of the events that occurred during his change in personality.

Well, that's very extensive, Xaosite... I am picking up a bit of a trend here. ;)

Anyway, here's our next alien species.

Name: "Aghasi"
Homeworld: Gliese 876 e
Status: Coalition Founding Member
History: The "Aghasi" have recorded history going back 5,000 years, and despite the harsh environment of their planet, developed art, literature, mathematics and some very deep philosophical thinking. However, on a world with an average temperature variation between 240 C to 380 C, technology beyond the obsidian stage is virtually impossible. They were humanity's first contact with alien life in 2160, and since then have remained staunch allies and friends. These giant but gentle lifeforms, however, have found it difficult to adapt to life outside their world. While they have successfully made colonies on 55 Cancri and a few other lava worlds, these are the only places they could go without costly and expensive lifesupport systems. During the Neelaa War, the Aghasti contributed what few ships they had, but more importantly a very large number of troops equipped with the latest in life support systems and battlesuits. Indeed, Aghasti served in every planet-based action of war, many a Coalition soldier owing their lives to their huge, infinitely loyal friends.

The current Aghasi government is essentially a republic of tribes and villages, with a matriarch and a patriarch chosen by representatives of all the communities across their planet. Slow, careful deliberation is the order of the day, with new technologies from the outside being considered for mass distribution, and then, if approved, given out. Knowledge does not have the same restriction though, and every Aghasi village has at least one connection to the Coalition Otherspace Network.

Physiology: Standing an average 4 to 5 meters tall, the Aghasi are flourocarbon based bipeds. Despite the high gravity of their world, they grew to such heights thanks to the carbon-fiber nature of their physiology. Circulatory, skeletal, respiratory and other biological systems are entwined by the same fibers, giving the Aghasi a knotted, coiled, wiry appearance. Their heads contain their brains, eyes and thermal imaging senses, which are even better than an Earth snake's. Their tentacles, the number of which varies from individual to individual, contain sensory organs dealing with "smell" and "taste" as well as touch, and, much like an elephant's trunk, help with respiration along with nostrils contained on the shoulders. At least two tentacles serve as part of their reproduction, so it's little wonder the Aghasi value them so much. They do have arms and hands but these are best used to hold and grasp things, while the tentacles are reserved for delicate work.

As flourocarbon lifeforms, they breathe both carbon monoxide and methane for respiration, though thanks to the flourocarbon "plants" on their world they also get some oxygen. Like humans, for the most part they are what they eat and omnivorous, though they need a proportionately higher amount of phosphorus, sulphur and iron in their meals. Needless to say, humans would die if they ate any Aghasi cuisine, making cultural exchange on that end difficult.

They have two genders, females carrying the young in a sack on her back for ten months. The young develop in eggs which remain attached to the mother for the duration-Upon birth they break out, to be caught by their mother. Average lifespan is up to two Earth centuries, with females living longer than males.

Evolving from herd animals similar in conception to Earth elephants, the Aghasi are in general a peaceful, cautious race who, due to the limits of their technology, focused on development of the mind. Their language is extremely complex, using sight, sound, temperature variation and body language and chemistry all in various amounts appropriate to dialect and context. They have adopted "Aghasi" (Hindi for "Fire Elephant") as their name to be used among other species, as their real name is far too complex for anyone to translate into something like English.

On lower gravity worlds, Aghasi are much stronger and a fair bit faster than most other sentients, serving as able battering rams in spacesuits that may as well be battlearmor.

EDIT: Just so everyone knows, YES there will be mecha in this thing. Ground based combat models, true, but mecha nevertheless. Think the tech level of Metal Gears or Full Metal Panic.

Birrin and Aghasi are both pretty cool.

And YES! Mecha for the win!

And now for some more questions.

What are the weapons like in this era? Laser-based? Live ammunition? etc.

Are there people with psychic abilities?

Is there invisibility cloak type technology ?

And should I show my droid character's bio and current capabilities?

Coalition Starships have lasers, rail guns, missiles with a variety of warheads, and their fusion drives (though these are essentially point-blank range weapons, like fusion-powered flamethrowers). They're working on Evangelion-style positron cannons, but lasers aren't going anywhere, they're far too useful.

On the ground, they have laser handguns, laser rifles, and laser cannons, along with Space: Above and Beyond-style flying smart bombs, "sticky" grenades like in Halo, visual camouflage that renders vehicles and troops invisible, strength-augmenting suits and mecha, and plenty of drones. Even so, just as weapons have evolved, so too has body armor. And sensor jamming technology often makes battles go close quarters.

There are some people with psychic abilities. notably a few refugees from an unknown humanoid race that crashed onto Earth a few decades ago. They were all babies at the time and nobody knew about their psychic abilities until they were in their teens. Finding their homeworld and/or purpose might be a good plot.

No, there Ain't No Stealth in Space ?. At most you can surprise ships by jumping out of Otherspace near them, but the closer you get, the faster the light bouncing off your ship travels and so the window of opportunity is very, very small. There are rumors that an alien species may have found a way to use Otherspace itself for cloaking technology, but this is basically "Flat Earth" level fringe.

(Though they might be right. You never know.)

Go ahead, if you'd like.

Huh, for some strange reason, I immediately thought of Sekirei and DearS. And that does sound like a good side plot.

And now some more questions

What is Television like in the 26th century and can we access it on board the ship?

Are there space pirates, mercenaries, salvagers and the likes?

Is the ship going to be self-sufficient or will we need to stop every now and then to resupply?

And finally how are criminals, rogue AIs, and the likes handled?

Television is different in that it actually shows full frontal nudity as sentient robots and aliens have made most human stigmas regarding nudity evaporate. Other than ten million channels from every Coalition world, not much has changed. Our ship can't tap into it on the frontier though-Not in real time, anyway. We can get periodic updates when we get close to a transceiver in Otherspace.

Space pirates, space mercenaries, space salvagers, space ninjas, space zombies... You name it, it's out there somewhere.

They go to jail. Usually on desolate places. Rogue AIs get placed into boxes that are isolated from external transmission or communication, and are put on wheels they can use to zip around a prison.

The ship will need to resupply on a number of things regularly, but can operate for an extended period of time on her own.

That last one will be my Job.

(Quotes from my char during Ship Orientation, EVERY SINGLE PERSON on the ship who is not a stow away has heard all of this, the higher members of the ship have heard it several times, since they have to be there to.)

"I am this ship's Purser. Any requests for item's to be bought or delivered to the ship must be past and cleared by me, I have to keep track of every single thing brought on and off this ship, as such I am the ONLY person in charge of such things, we have gone over it literally thousands of times, there is NO POSSIBLE WAY for someone to get anything without me seeing it first, attempting to do it anyway will result in the captain being informed so he can select a punishment, plus I get to cut your pay, being in charge of ALL the ships money means I can do that. Any and all uses of the ship's budget need to be be cleared and passed by me, even the captain at least has to tell me if he's using it.

In response to comment on me docking pay.

"Of the Ship's staff, only I and the Captain have rite to control your pay grade, the Captain because he's the Captain and me because I control the ship's finances, using only word's the Captain can overrule my decision on this matter, but I can Overrule the Captain on this matter by backing my pay adjustment with some extra paperwork and a decent reason for the pay deduction, fortunately for you I hate doing paperwork, but fortunately for me, the Captain trust's my judgment on this, and never overturns my pay deduction's, so if you piss me off you can kiss your paycheck goodbye."

The comment's on the captain, can either be the truth or me lying to scare the newbies, it's the choice of whoever becomes captain.

Another question!

What are the various posts/duties on the ship that will eventually be filled?

Sorry for asking all these questions.
