Aarik: I'd just like to point out that your threat probably won't work too well since we're fairly isolated. Pretty much every PC would be able to pull something similar, since replaing someone would be difficult out on the fringe.

Examples:

-Yeah, the reactor is starting to go critical, and will cripple the ship. Sure, I can fix it, but I'm not getting paid, so...

-I could start analyzing the enemy wreckage so we don't suffer major losses if we meet them again, but I'm not getting paid, so...

- I can navigate us out of the nebula and even aoid the black hole, but since I'm not getting paid, I'm really not in the mood, so...

I'm not saying it won't be effective, especially against the recruits, but if you push other major characters around, they'll push back, and the consequences could be more immediate than not getting your paycheck.

Edit:
@Shibo
Positions I can think of:
Unique Posts:
Captain
Vice-Captain
Diplomat (Might overlap with Captain/Vice-Captain)

Non-Unique Posts:
Medical
Science
Engineering
Security
Marines
Armored Division- Air (Fighter Pilots)
Armored Division- Ground (Mecha Pilots)
Waste Management/Cleaning
Food Services
Navigation
Beaurocracy (or however you spell it)

There are probably at least a few more, but you have a decent election available.

@Aarik: I pretty much agree with zerohour on this one. Keep in mind we're all out on the frontier and we all have to work together.

As for the official job list, I'll write it down here now.

Here are all the official positions for the shipboard side of things, though on a small ship like ours people will double up on different jobs if required:

-Captain
-First Officer (aka XO)
-Navigator
-Head Pilot
-Communications Officer (Also handles linguistics)
-Sensor Officer (Can also serve as Electronic Warfare Officer or can be the Science officer)
-Fire Control Officer (Can also be the XO)
-Security Officer
-Chief Medical Officer (Doctor)
-Chief Engineer
-Quartermaster (AKA Logistical Operations Officer, or "Ops" for short. Also serves as the Purser)
-Cook

This doesn't mean they're all filled by officers, mind you. And there are a lot of other jobs to be filled, too.

-Engineers
Do maintenance on the ship and the engines. Basically anything that gets broken that has to do with the power, the environmental systems, the sensors, the weapons and other systems that their operators cannot fix themselves, the engineers fix and maintain. Depending on what they specialize in, are nicknamed accordingly. "Rocketmen" mainly handle the engines, for instance.
-Pilots
Pilot the ship, shuttles and assault gunships.
-Communication and Sensor Operators and Technicians
Operate the communications and sensor systems. Linguistics specialists also get assigned to this section for figuring out alien languages. Also known as "Eyes and Ears".
-Science Specialists
The head of the department is usually versed in a specific field of study depending on the ship's mission. Astrophysicists for studying stellar phenomena, xenobiologists for planetary surveys, that sort of thing. On most small ships the Science Officer doubles as the Sensor Officer and thus is usually an astrophysicist. Other scientists in other fields are carried, from archaeologists to marine biologists, depending on the ship's mission. The ship's CMO works part-time in the science section, generally on biology and other fields of that nature.
-Medics and Nurses
What it says on the tin.
-Security officers
Usually switch between manning the armory and tending to the missiles and weapons and maintaining shipboard security. Can include dedicated counter-boarding specialists but those kinds of jobs are generally given to Espatiers on ships.
-Navigator Apprentices
Again, what it says on the tin.
-Cooks, Stewards, Cargohandlers, Clerks
Generally under the authority of the Quartermaster, they see to making the food, stocking supplies, handling requests, filing paperwork, and other things of that nature.
-Ship's Cat
Is trained to find and kill alien bugs and bring them to the captain so the crew can get an idea of what kinds of stowaways they've got after every landing.

Everybody works to keep the ship clean and in good condition to keep morale up. And during the voyage, many enlisted study up on other fields or apprentice under a department head to learn how to become a specialist in a particular field, or just to gain more experience.

Now, for our "Space Marines", or as they're called in the 26th century, Espatiers.

They follow the same basic rank structure as today's Marines, and a few are present on every ship. They participate in shipboard security, counter-boarding and boarding operations, raids, planetary surveys and other missions of that nature. Depending on the ship, the chief of the Espatiers can be head of the security and fire control departments. Some ships also have Espatier pilots for gunships and shuttles.

Say, are we being paid salaries on a periodic basis for going on this interstellar-space expedition or is it something else?

Also ADD-1337 can assume the duties of most roles if the need arises, to limited degree of success. But for now, I'll just have him stick with the science crew for awhile.

Yeah, we get paid. While the sheer abundance of resources available to our civilization have made it, for all intents and purposes, post-scarcity, money is still used.

What's the currency called and what the heck are we using it for?

Also just added bio to ADD-1337's character profile.

Credits and it's used out of tradition, to maintain some structure to society, and to keep track of who buys what. They aren't going to just let you walk out with a neutron bomb, after all, unless you're qualified to use one responsibly.

Hmm, I`m in charge of how the money gets distributed... I should make a system...

hmm... 80% at the end the month, with the first 20% divided up and given at the start of each week along with any stipends they would get from their jobs, that way they have a decently static income.

And I didn't mean to cut their pay completely, more like, Guy A gets 500C per month, if I cut his pay 10C, Guy A is now payed 490C a month, unless he gets a raise or a promotion, and raises would be more then just 10C.

I wouldn't cut it by much, that would, as you said, endanger the ship, but if you screw up you lose some pocket change, if you keep screwing up you lose more.

Plus, I need something to threaten people with to insure they listen to me.

Interesting. I don't know how much I might be able to contribute, but it looks fun enough to hop on in...

Character bio:

Name: Yuuka Murasaki

Age: 29

Birthplace: St. Marcelli's Research Arcology and University, Mars

Physical Description: Standing at just under six feet, Yuuka is quite tall and slender, especially for an Oriental woman. While her proportions are not perfect or overly excessive, she is well-endowed and has a curvaceous, hourglass figure. Her black hair is styled in a hime cut, tied together in a loose bun.

Is nearsighted, so Yuuka wears a simple pair of black-framed glasses. Typically seen in a knee-length skirt, black pantyhose, grey turtleneck, and a lab coat. Might also be seen with a portable tablet-like device when on-duty.

Personality: Yuuka is cynical and blunt, occasionally sarcastic, and a bit of a deadpan snarker. She is subtly arrogant, hinting disdain or displeasure at what she might consider 'lesser' minds, although never openly displaying it. She is, however, cool and aloof most of the time, very slow to anger, and has roughly the same urgency and gait as a sleepwalker. Aside from her usually dry sense of humor, Yuuka rarely shows emotion and almost never smiles, aside from subtle smirks or a slightly derisive chuckle.

Yuuka is also an occasional smoker and enjoys drinking either alone with her thoughts or with anybody willing to join her.

Background:

Yuuka Murasaki was born on Mars at St. Marcelli's Research Arcology and University, fifteen minutes after her fraternal twin brother. St. Marcelli's is an extremely wealthy, prestigious, and highly regarded university and research facility - among the best in the Coalition - and includes a fully functioning arcology for students, faculty, and researchers. Among St. Marcelli's team of scientists and intellectuals were Yuuka's parents, her father being the Dean of Medicine and head researcher on a variety of projects and experiments, and her mother being the Head of the Department of Xenobiology.

Growing up in a pampered and highly intellectual environment, it seemed only natural that Yuuka would develop an interest in the same fields her parents worked in. Unlike her twin brother, however, Yuuka displayed an impressive and startling aptitude for the sciences, scoring at the top of her classes for much of her school life and scoring exceptionally high on aptitude tests and evaluations.

Yuuka's exceptional skill and intelligence culminated with earning her MD at the age of 17 - among the youngest to do so at St. Marcelli's, and a Master's Degree in Xenobiology four years later. For a brief span of time, Yuuka would work alongside her parents and other members of St. Marcelli's on a wide range of research projects in both medicine and xenobiology.

Her projects, however, were controversial in some aspects. While relatively minor in the grand scheme of things, Yuuka has no qualms about live experimentation on both human and non-human test subjects - anything from simple observations to even as far as experimenting new drugs or procedures. She cares more for her actual work and for results than the involved individuals. Part of the reason for this stems from her personality - after a lifetime of achievements and honours, she feels she is more than justified to do things like this for the sake of science.

While some of her projects earned her a slap-on-the-wrist by her parents and the Board-of-Directors, they were at best extremely minor incidents. And despite that, Yuuka's research and expertise would attract the attention of the Local Group Coalition, in need of skilled individuals for a series of expeditions into the galaxy with their new Otherspace drives. Viewing it as an invaluable opportunity for research, Yuuka accepted an offer to work as a Chief Medical Officer on one of the starships.

Additional Remarks:

Yuuka is an intellectual, not a combatant. A lifetime of studying and learning, all within a high class academic community, has left her with little to no combat training.

Beyond medicine and research, Yuuka is also - quite surprisingly - a good cook. While she was trying to enter her desired fields of study, her intellectually unimpressive brother learned to cook, and had gotten extremely good at it. Yuuka picked up a few things from him over the years and could very create a wonderful meal with few ingredients applied with scientific precision and accuracy.

So, this is my character. I, too, noticed a lack of female characters so I figured 'what the hell?' So, is this okay? I wanted to go for an intellectual character, but I don't know if I went overboard on her having her MD by 17, etc.

If I may ask, though, how exactly is this RPG going to play out? It is going to be a post-by-post, fanfic sort of thing or what?

@Rooster: I'm pretty sure that AJT said that Espatiers also take up security posts.

@Legacy: Your character is awesome, dude. I can already see the character interactions already. Kekekekeke!

Another question

What are the protocols for exploring a planet with under-developed tech level? Do we explore incognito? Do we send a probe down first then decided whether to undertake direct exploration?

And what about magic? Does it exist? Is it like symbology from the Star Ocean games or do you have your own system?

#36
@Rooster: Shipboard security are basically MPs/space warfare specialists. They're more generalized than Espatiers, trained to work as gunners, maintenance techs on weapons, and in basic law enforcement, boarding and counter-boarding operations. Their physical training is not as intense as Espatiers but they are able to do more shipboard tasks. They have specialists, of course, but they cross-train intensely. Their official title is Security Personnel, though they are often referred to as SPs "Spacer Police", WepSecs [Weapons/Security], Space Cops, Gunners or (derisively) Fighting Engineers.

The Espatiers are drawn from the special operations forces, elite regular army, militia and marine services of Earth and the colonies. They are the best of the best of the best, and trained as intensely as Navy SEALS and Russian Spetnaz. They do boarding and counter-boarding but are fully intended to be used in planetary combat, from covert ops to open warfare. They operate gunships, tanks, shuttles, and mecha. They use both laser weapons and kinetic energy weapons (26th century version of Metal Storm guns, basically) and are further trained to operate in virtually any environment. However, as said, Espatiers are meant to fight men, mecha, etc. They don't fight starships or maintain starships. They are known as Espadas, Ground Pounders, Hammerheads, Landers, and Space Marines.

Espatiers and Security naturally have a rivalry, like any other military services. However, when you need a heavy laser or rail cannon repaired, you generally want a WepSec on it. If you need guys to drop in on an occupied building, you generally want Espatiers. Who you send in depends on the commanding officer.

@Legacy: Nice bio, dude. Sounds hot and deadly. A very fun combination. And it'll be handled Round Robin style.

@shibosho: The Coalition's general policy that all members have agreed to is to wait until a planet is at least at a 20th Century Earth level of technology for first contact. By then they would have radios, mathematics, nuclear physics, and would probably be looking for life on other worlds. Even then it's handled carefully, covertly contacting the governments of those worlds first rather than just saying "Howdy" to everybody on the planet. While we made first contact with the Aghasi just fine, some other first contacts went badly. Aliens thinking we were gods, some ships and colonies taking advantage of less-advanced civilizations, whole worlds thrown into panic and then nuclear war, things like that.

Now, in cases where First Contact has already been made, it's a moot point to hide ourselves. The Hoppers, for instance, were at a Stone Age level of technology when the Neelaa invaded them, and when we liberated them we began to trade them more advanced technology in exchange for resources. We try to protect less-advanced worlds from being exploited, and any world with sentient life under threat by natural or unnatural forces, we do everything in our power to save them. All captains out exploring are trained in First Contact Protocols.

As for magic? There are psychic powers, and some groups on Earth and the colonies practice technomagic. As for true magic? Well... You never know.

;)

And now, two profiles. One on one of our possible antagonists, another on a notable ship in the Coalition. Ships, mecha, colonies and alien races as well as characters can all be submitted.

Character bio:

Name: Captain April Genoway

Age: 42

Birthplace: Indiana, United States of America, North American continent, Earth

Physical Description: Small, severe looking woman with auburn hair and brown eyes. Hair is usually in a bun high atop her head, dress is usually a black United Space Nations of Sol Navy (USNSN) duty uniform. Off duty, a variety of wear appropriate for her station, though usually subdued and business-like.

Background: A Spacer brat, her father and grandfather were members of the USNSN, and per established family tradition entered the service. She majored in astrophysics and cosmology and upon completion of ROTC training and the gaining of her Master's in a record two years, was assigned to the USNSN Sciences Division. Her first starship posting was aboard the USNS Frederick Douglas, a vessel tasked with studying J0108-1431, the nearest pulsar to the Local Group Coalition. At a distance of 108 lightyears, the Frederick Douglas would be out of contact for over five years.

During this deep space expedition, Genoway was promoted to chief science officer after a catastrophic accident during a gravitational lensing experiment backfired. Genoway personally supervised all aspects of the continuing survey, ensuring one of the most complete and detailed scientific surveys of the space traveled by the Frederick Douglas, as well as a comprehensive survey of J0108-1431. Genoway's performance was documented as "highly professional given the circumstances, but shows signs of obsessive-compulsive behavior and potential megalomania." Nevertheless, USNSN Command was impressed with Genoway's take-charge attitude and determination, and she was put through Command School upon the Douglas's return. The Neelaa War began while she was still going through War College, and due to losses suffered among commanders Genoway was quickly given a field commission as executive officer aboard USNS Socrates. This cruiser, like all Coalition starships, was nearly hopelessly outmatched by Neelaa starships, and during an engagement with a Neelaa battleship the captain was killed. Genoway assumed command and, while it cost her the lives of fifty of her crew, was able to lure the battleship into a trap and destroy it with nuclear weapons.

Similar tactics were employed with success by Coalition units, but the Socrates kept up a record of beating the odds, though with severe casualties each time. There were allegations of Genoway pushing her crew far too hard, of her taking too many risks, even an allegation of her torturing a Neelaa prisoner for information and executing her XO when he questioned her orders. An official investigation cleared her of these charges, though given the desperate situation of the war effort rumors persisted of a coverup. Nor did it stop then-Commander Genoway from gaining, among other monikers, "Captain Myway" or "Space Em Til They Freeze" Genoway as nicknames.

The Socrates was among the first Earth ships refitted with an Otherspace drive and shielding system, and was used to good effect by now-Captain Genoway. She developed a record of solo operations and the use of highly risky plans and strange utilization of advanced physics. She was also described as "very self-centered, very egotistical and difficult to get along with: Has a bit of a god-complex". However, the ship achieved it's objectives and Genoway was touted as a war hero.

After the war's conclusion though, Genoway's personal and professional problems became much harder to justify. Her egotism and micromanaging and god-like view of herself almost came to a head tragically when Genoway almost waited too long to save a primitive civilization from a comet strike due to regulations and personal problems with her crew. She went on a voyage with her father and fiance in an experimental ship, which crashed on an ice moon in the Tau Ceti system. She was the only survivor and spent a year after the accident recovering. Returning from her leave of absence, she took command of a few cruisers, her nature tempered slightly but still with traces of her former egotism and micromanaging.

Eventually, Genoway was given a new assignment: Command of the purpose-built exploratory cruiser, USNS Pioneer. She was assigned another survey mission of J0108-1431. Rumors that she was saddled with a lot of people other ships and bases wanted to get rid of are unconfirmed. Nevertheless, Genoway sets out on March 2nd, 2540. The Pioneer vanished shortly after it's launch and has not been heard from since.

Additional Remarks:

Yes, she is based on Captain Kathryn Janeway from Star Trek: Voyager. Though I've included some aspects of Admiral Helena Cain in her background to help explain some of her behavior. As for where Pioneer is? Well, you'll just have to wait and see.

Now, on the USNS Sojourner:

Name: USNS Sojourner
Unit Number: SDGO-8568
Class: Avenger
Naval Designation: Upgraded Multi-role destroyer
Dimensions:
-Length: 180 meters
-Width: 96 meters
-Height: 25 meters (including tail fins)
Displacement (In one gee): 400,000 tonnes
Compliment:
-69 crew
-14 Espatiers
-Total Capacity: 300
Engines:
-Four Cochrane-Hyuuga FNE-900 Directed Fusion Drives, Two Fore and Aft
-Gremlins Mark 45 Anti-Gravity Drive
-Utopia Planitia Type V Otherspace Faster-than-Light Drive
Weapons:
-Two Raytheon-Proteus 150 TW laser cannons in robotic turrets
-One 155mm rail gun in belly turret x 500 rounds
-Four 340mm missile tubes x 60 missiles
Defenses:
-12cm polyceramic hull plating
-Otherspace Defensive Shield
Support Units:
-Two TSV-48 Shinigami multi-role gunships
-Two SLV-60 Mustang multi-role shuttles
Endurance:
-9 months

History:

A small, multi-role destroyer and survey class vessel, the Avenger-class starships were built to run forever with a barely competent engineer. Not an easy task for an interstellar vessel designed to handle everything from escort duties and light evacuations, to covert operations and planetary survey missions. However, the designers delivered and the first Avenger-class destroyer entered service in 2510.

Their four-engined design and wings allowed them fantastic maneuverability in and out of an atmosphere, and feeding off two reactors gave the destroyer a high degree of survivability. She was also well armed, able to engage targets on the ground or in space. Nearly 800 would be built between 2510 and 2530, and more than half of them would be destroyed during the Neelaa War. While certainly able starships, they could not stand up to superior Neelaa vessels except in large numbers.

Sojourner herself was the fifth Avenger-class destroyer, and served with distinction until her mysterious disappearance in 2520. She reappeared twenty years later, with only a single survivor aboard and no hint as to what happened to her. Still, not an organization to waste starships, USNSN Command had Sojourner refitted with an Otherspace drive and put back to work. Most of her sisters had either been retired or upgraded, and were put to work patrolling the interior of the Coalition or doing surveys on the frontier. Sojourner was sent on one such mission... And the crew immediately brought her back, speaking of strange things happening. Over the following years, she gained a reputation as a "cursed" ship. It became an assignment for the small number of Spacers and Espatiers either brave or crazy enough to take her out (mostly crazy). She is currently under the command of freshly minted Captain Nuori, who may or may not have pissed off the wrong people to get this ship with her collection of misfits, insane geniuses, and outcasts.

The design of the Sojourner is based on the layout of the Lying Bastard from Ringworld. However, Sojourner is a slightly bigger ship, lacks a transparent hull and is a bit more clunky. The layout is still basically the same.

A Shinigami gunship. Equipped with anti-ship missiles it can pose a worthy threat to enemy capital ships, but is, strictly speaking, not an actual fighter. It's main duties are to support ground forces and support it's homeship in various ways. All ships carry at least a few Shinigami, though there are no dedicated carriers. Closest to a carrier would be spaceborne assault transports which carry several Shinigami and Mustangs, among other craft, for planetary assaults.

Hmmm, possible antagonist sounds like quite the character.
The starship sounds pretty cool as well.
So the ship we're going to be on is the Sojourner?

Also are there going to be Virtual Reality room on board the ships?

No, Sojourner is going to be a "guest star", essentially. Our ship will be another vessel that I'm working on.

The ship doesn't have holodecks, though it does have a rec room with video games and nearly every cabin has a computer interface. You can use VR neural interfaces if you like.

Well, an Earth colony settled in 2142 would have been isolated for four centuries. Who knows how it might have turned out? ^_^

As for mecha, this is the image I keep coming up with for how the mecha might be:

Anyone have any other ideas?

Also, enjoy an image of an early Birrin spaceship. Yes, they do fly around in flying saucers:

((With kind Permission of AJT))

The Protaganists' Ship:

Name: USNS Seraphim
Unit Number: SDGO- 9760
Class: Merlin
Naval Designation: Flotilla Leader/ Heavy Destroyer
Dimensions:
-Length: 200 meters
-Width: 98 meters
-Height: 29 meters (including tail fins)
Displacement (In one gee): 410,000 tonnes
Compliment:
-72 crew
-24 Espatiers
-Total Capacity: 400
Engines:
-2x Cochrane-Hyuuga FNE-900 Directed Fusion Drives
-Gremlins Mark 45 Anti-Gravity Drive
-Utopia Planitia Type Vb Otherspace Faster-than-Light Drive
Weapons:
-Two Raytheon-Proteus 180 TW laser cannons in robotic turrets
-One 155mm rail gun in belly turret x 500 rounds
-Eight 340mm missile tubes x 80 missiles
Defenses:
-12cm polyceramic hull plating
-Otherspace Defensive Shield
Support Units:
-Two TSV-48 Shinigami multi-role gunships
-Two SLV-60 Mustang multi-role shuttles
Endurance:
-9 months

HISTORY:
The Merlin-class destroyers came off the assembly line shortly before the Neelaa War. They were fast and well armed but still no match for Neelaa starships. They are also quickly refit to carry Otherspace drives. They're bulkier but slightly more streamlined than Avenger-class destroyers. They were built to be able to go down deeper into a gas giant's atmosphere than the Avengers as well as take more punishment.

So, this ship is one of the first Merlin-class destroyers off the assembly line. Bigger hangar bay and cargo bay than the Avenger class. Improvements in power systems mean she can carry more people and more supplies without sacrificing performance.
Also, she doesn't need fusion drives in front and back. The Avenger has that feature because anti-grav systems weren't good enough to get the need maneuverability.

In the words of one of her Plankowners, "She's not the youngest Belle at the Ball, but she can still turn heads."

Questions.

How do sentient droids work?
What are their brains made out of?
Are the three laws in effect for non-sentient droids?
Are there droids made to look like humans or whatever species?
Who's the biggest war hero from the Neelaa War?
And finally of the 72 crew members and 24 espatiers, how many are you hoping will be played by us forum-goers?

Sentient droids work... Very well. Seriously guys, all you need to know about them is that they are very rare, when they're found they're given basic rights, and that yes, there are androids in human form that are sentient. But, as said, they are rather difficult to build and most people don't bother with it.

The other Coalition members and the Neelaa and Tur-Han all make their own androids, with the exception of the Hoppers (because they're still not advanced enough) and the Aghasi (because they have no need of them).

Biggest war hero? Well, heroes, collectively, would probably belong to the crew of the Bahamut-They were operating the first Otherspace drive we had and had to fight all by themselves while undergoing a shakedown cruise. Under the command of Captain Luis Irrizarry, theyalso managed, about six years later, to defeat the "Juggernaut" probe ship that no other Coalition starship was able to defeat. The Bahamut is essentially the Coalition's answer to the Enterprise-Though fortunately a lot less stuck up.

Heroes abounded in that war though, so feel free to make your own. I'll be working on details on the Neelaa and the Tur-Han later.

Cool, might be tough to keep track of things when the number of NPCs goes up though.

Now for some more questions,

How advance have the medical science become? Do we have Bacta tanks? Easily made synthetic spare organs? Clones? A cure for the common cold?

Are there video games?

Can you still read manga for free on the internet?

Are there anything still in use from the 21st century or are they now in museums and stuff?

Oh and what about religion, is it still there?

Man you have a lot of questions... Yes, medical science is really advanced. No we don't have Bacta tanks-We have stuff that actually works. Cloning of new organs and things like that.

Yes. Yes. Yes. And yes.

How and why did mankind give sentience to chimpanzees, octopuses, elephants and penguins?
